My 500 GB external harddrive just went kaput.

I am now starting my music collection from scratch.

That happened to me twice in one year.  Now I use an online data backup service in addition to hard drives.

that happened to me with pictures and music. I paid abuttloadnourmous amount of $$ to get it all back.
