There, I finally started it. Now off to play 18 at Druid Hill Park. 8-)
Nice! I haven't played in awhile. I might have to go play a round tonight or this weekend if it doesn't snow. We have a pretty tough course here in Dubuque, IA from what I hear (I've only played 3 different courses, and ours was by far the hardest). I've never played with the "proper" equipment really...I don't use all the different discs, putters, etc. I just use one driver disc for the whole course. I throw "underhand" for long shots and switch to the traditional frisbee-throwing motion for short shots. I once came within about a foot of holing (in one of course) an insanely long and winding hole of about 350-400 feet, and I once played a round at -11 for 18 holes, but I think those were flukes. Normally I play right around par, unless I'm playing a lot, then I might play around -2 or so. How is the course you play on? Is it wide open or really woodsy? That's the only problem with our course...there are some thick woods and one huge valley that eats discs like crazy. I think this sport should be in the Olympics...I'd watch it. I bet there are some insanely good players out there.
you know, that's one thing I always thought I would enjoy but just never got around to trying. Maybe this spring.
I love it! Don't do it nearly often enough however. I don't get nearly as pissed as when I play real golf.
I haven't played for several years, but I used to have a set of discs and played pretty often. Mostly played at Aquatic Park in Berkeley and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco...I'm not even sure if I have discs anymore, and not sure where to play here in Sacramento. It is great fun though!
Quoteyou know, that's one thing I always thought I would enjoy but just never got around to trying. Maybe this spring.
Same here and apparently we've got some good courses here in louisville.
I enjoy playing it alone most.
When there's nobody around and I can spend as much time as I want, just standing around, looking at the surroundings, take a shot every now and then, that's great.
Sometimes I play it with my father or my friends too, that's fun too, but I kinda don't really wanna talk when playing
Havent played near as much the last 1-2 years, but Ive been playing for about 9 years. I was actually pretty into from 2002-2004 and played in some amateur tournaments, ending up winning 1 and coming in 3rd in another. Now that Im living back in Pittsburgh for at least this coming summer, Im hoping to get out to my old courses a good bit. I used to live less than 5 minutes from what is supposed to be one of the best courses in the country (or was 5 years ago when I some a few pro tournaments played there). I only live about 15-20 minutes from it now, but thats a big difference from 3 minutes ;D. Wish I played a couple of the courses in the Quad Cities when I lived out there Hawkeye, I love playing new courses.
And for the people who said theyre interested, I highly recommend trying it out. Not only is it fun and you can play as fast or slow as you want, but the best thing about it is its free (outside of getting discs). I think you also need to get at least 1 driver, mid-range, and putter discs - its essential for learning the game. You dont have to get geeked out like me and have 20 discs, but you should get those 3, though the nice thing about getting more discs is finding which ones best fit style/arm strength and figuring out which disc is best to use for certain throws based on how much turn it has, etc. Its really like having a set of clubs where each 1 is best for certain throws.
Ive tried plenty of discs and theres a lot I like, and a lot I dont which is why it helps to try other peoples or get more yourself. Ive seen even WalMart these days carrying nice Innova and Discraft discs. I think the best and most versatile discs Ive used are the Discraft XL (driver), Discraft MRV, and Innova Aviar (putter) and recommend getting those if youve never tried it or are a beginner. Its also good to get the Discraft's in Z Plastic and the Innova's in Champion plastic (each company's toughest material so your discs dont get dinged or bent). This site has sales on stuff on the time if youre interested:

Also, if youre starting out stick with it because its actually harder than it looks. I was terrible at first and almost quit, but I stuck with it and it got that much more fun as I got better. My signature move is now doing the spin-o-rama for my long drives, gives me the most distance 8-)
BTW, if you have the funds, the Boss is an amazing disc.

Hey Hawkeye. I actually started playing in my undergraduate days in Champaign. It was weird because we had a nice 18 hole course in our arboretum just outside my dorm freshman year but tore it down to build a Japanese Culture House. :-/ Tough for me but I guess it was great for me that the University did that, tea ceremonies...etc.
So they built a new pitch and putt 9 holer that I ended up honing my skills before moving.
My home course now is Druid Hill Park which sits right in Baltimore City serving as a classic divide of neighborhoods. It also houses the Baltimore Zoo.
It's a straightforward 18 hole course that plays relatively open but trees are in play in strategic positions on every hole. There are also 9 X holes in the deep woods that are rather lengthy and difficult.
Being in the city, it is pretty full year around and a great community has been built around it. I probably play 2 rounds per week in all seasons though after work rounds are tough until there is longer sunlight.
Other great courses nearby are Rockburn Park in Elkridge, Seneca Creek in the west suburbs of DC, Patapsco State Park and Codorus State Park just south of Hanover in PA. Codorus actually has a full 54 holes plus a mini disc course and has an amazing variety of holes, some with water in play.
And if anyone gets a chance to play Walnut Creek near Charlottesville, VA, the 17th hole is the most picturesque, daunting tee I've ever played. Probably plays 400 feet from the top of a hill with the pin at least 50-70 below in elevation sitting to the back left. A huge lake guards the right side that is always in play because of the elevation change and any gust of wind that high up. If you rip it and get the disc going towards the hole, a little pond and mini waterfall protect the pin on the left side with woods behind it. Awesome :D :D :D
It would be great to hear from all the players home courses :)

Wow, you guys should really play. It's such a relaxing game (can be very competitive), free (bring pets), and the people are all so laid back and kind. It's like playing real golf but just the opposite ;D
Plus it doesn't have the steep learning curve that real golf has, the signficant others can play competently right away and of course it's a great excuse to go out and hike.
Only went once, but LOVED it. It's easy to feel good at it! Can't find my own discs though...used that is.
We used to play every week in Missoula, MT at the Blue Hills. One of my all time favorite sports. I need to start up again. We called it Folf...I SAID FOLF ANYONE?

Man, when I was still in highschool we smoked sooo much green at the disc golf course. It was like mandatory at the bench at the first tee and the bench before the 9th hole. Kids from our school who didnt even end up throwing would go there and get blazed ;D

They are a perfect match...some smokin' and shootin'
Home course (for now) is Trophy Lakes. Rather long, with loads of water, but relatively flat and open. I'll see if I can find a pic of myself playing there. I want to play for bag tags at some point, but I'd feel kind of low stealing them away to Ohio with me.
South Carolina has excellent disc golf. I know a guy up near Columbia who actually opened up his own course named Stoney Hill on his property, and it spares no one. It has holes perched on the side of a hill, holes littered with OB, a hole in the middle of a cow pasture, and an eighteenth hole that sits on a little hill at least 50 feet above a self-dug quarry. Seriously, you could hurt and maybe kill yourself if you fell.
I also went to see the USDGC at Winthrop Gold last year. It was one hell of a tournament, with a great final round matchup between Climo, Doss (the winner), and a 16 year old named Paul Macbeth (yes, this kid was in the final group). It's quite the game; ESPN should pick up on it.
I've always wanted to design my own course...for public use.
QuoteI've always wanted to design my own course...for public use.
Me and my friends had a long running story about making our own course that we thought up once when we were having a smoke break on the course, and it would randomly be brought up after that.
Our course would be a disc golf resort with 3 courses on the top of Mt Everest in a dome. Each course would have a different theme which I cant remember anymore. Everybody would be given their own Segway upon arrival, along with a quarter ounce of their finest hydroponic of their choice. We would have bands come and play 3 night stands, and there would also be a zoo.
And I was too stoned during these years to remember anymore 8-)

I gotta disagree with you on this one Headdy. The highest quality plastics are the most durable but also require greater snap and power to properly handle. For most beginners, a basic plastic would be better than an Innova Champion disc. As each player's game evolves, they should then begin to experiment with some of the higher quality plastics which typically have less glide.

I never thought about that actually. I dont even think the Z Plastic or Champion plastics came out until I had been playing a year or two. I think for the most part, I used whatever each's "medium" plastic was.
If you get a driver like an XL and mid range like an MRV though, they both have moderate turn at best on them, so I think what you are saying is minimized (and doesnt mean you would need to buy the other discs since I think theyre much better). I think what youre saying would have a greater impact on discs that have low turnover ratings/a lot of turn.
I think the Z Putter might actually be a better beginner's putter than an Aviar in that sense because its the straightest flying putter Ive ever thrown. Though I still use an Aviar on certain putts, I prefer a Z Putter myself even now. They roll less too.

Disc golf is like playing golf with frisbees (specialized frisbees called disks). Ultimate frisbee is closer to soccer or football where your on a team, with one disc passing it up the field to the endzone. Check out wikipedia for more info.

That's awesome. I've never played in SC. I went to the championships in Allentown, PA about 4 years ago but didn't really get to watch much of the competition. I've never heard of Paul Macbeth.
I was wondering if this Disc Golf Monthly TV show that I get under Comcast's On Demand Service under Other Sports is a regional thing or if most people got it on their cable.
It's definitely fun to play for bag tags. My friend had made a bunch of laminated photos of jerseys, but we just switched to minis instead. My buddy ordered 15 minis and had painted 1-15 on them. They are actually nice and it makes more sense as you can used them during your round to mark 8-)
Since this is a dying thread, thought I'd share a story from this past Sunday.
I birdie 16 to go back to +2, 3 strokes clear of a friend of mine. I figure at worst I'll par 17 and 18 and I'm good. Well, I did. However, my buddy decided that he would birdie 17 than proceed to ace 18, a 300 footer with the pin hidden behind some trees on the left.
Cha-Ching :D :D :D
Luckily I won the tie break to earn the tag which I will lose promptly, but wow, I never thought I'd see -3 over 2 holes to tie.
:o :o :o :o
Well, not for you, but NICE!!! I think we can both agree that even if it means you personally lose, sick shots - especially a hole in one - are worth that ticket.
Only 1 of my friends actually has an ace, and I wasnt playing with him when he got it. I've never seen an ace first hand. I've hit the cage a handfull of times and have had shots look like theyre basket bound, but im still looking for my first ace.
Dont worry, this wont be a dying thread. Once I start playing, Im sure Ill post plenty of less interesting and more frustrating stories than this concerning my disc game ;D

Yeah, I've never aced a hole either. I've slammed chains about 5x but none stuck. I've hit about a 150 foot 2nd shot, that's about it. One day.....one day....one day....
one day...
So now I've aced a hole. #6 on Druid Hill, took a Cobra, turned it over left to right backhand on a downhill 250 footer.
Cha Cha Cha Chingggg!!!!

Nah, righty. Just got a couple discs in the bag that bite hard the other way
Off to Paw Paw West Virginia in 4 hours to play the Woodshed and Whipping Post. Supposed to be 92 degrees up in the hills of WVA.
Should be fun!!!

NYC has a ton of ultimate fris leagues all over--one of the best workouts ever other than soccer. I've done fris golf but it's just so boring, you don't even sweat ! :P
Finally made it out last weekend...still got it 8-) I have a feeling to take it to the next level though I'll need to start using more than one disc! Plus our course has these huge disc-eating valleys of death and if a frisbee goes in there you're not going to find it easily...so playing with one disc means you have to quit part way through the round sometimes. PennyLane you must be playing some flat course because on our course, you definitely work up a sweat climbing the hills...plus it's pretty humid here in Iowa in the summers so yeah, I sweat a lot...it's kinda sad for awhile disc golf was my only form of exercise..but I was usually drinking beer while playing...does that count as exercise then? I'll say yes. Still searching for that first hole in one. Out of curiousity does anyone else only play with one disc?

Great to hear you made it out man! It definitely helps to have more discs but I think it's important to master one or two new discs at a time. I think in the end, I really only use about 4 discs in my bag consistently.
I just played Paw Paw in West Virginia today and it kicked my ass! It was my first time and wow what a course!
Also don't forget, Ms. Penny runs marathons. I mean really, who does that? Just run for 26.2 miles. Crazy
Is Paw Paw supposed to be a real nice/tough course or somemthing? Just wondering since you drove 4 hours to play there ;D
Hawkeye - you definitely should get at least 1 putter, 1 mid range, and 1 driver. It's so much harder to play with only one disc because you cant putt with accuracy really with say a driver, and if youre making your first throw with a mid range or especially a putter, you not getting as much distance as you could/should and making the game tougher than it already is.
Supposed to be nice tomorrow. I think I might have to go down to the old home course and see what I can do
Mr. Headdy,
My post said I am leaving for Paw Paw in 4 hours. The trip is actually a little more than 2 hours.
It is a private park with an honor system greens fee with 36 CHALLENGING holes. It is by far the most difficult course I have ever played. Uphills, downhills, L2R, R2L, water, heavy woods. It is absolutely unrelenting. We played every hole as a par 4 and I still finished at 13 over par over the 36 holes. Of course 2 hours of sleep, some booze and 90+degree heat for 6 hours wore us down some too.
I highly recommend it if you are looking for a challenge and it sure isn't that far a ride from Pitt. It's near Berkley Springs but way off on a gravel road in the beautiful mountains and hills. It is so secluded that we played on a Sunday and only a handful of other people were there. The owner of the land is always there I hear and he popped out immediately from his farmhouse to offer a map.
I believe we played an 850 foot hole and a 800 foot tightly wooded hole among the craziness.
Sounds sweet. I know Ive definitely driven thru Berkley Springs on road trips south, but Im not sure how long of a drive it is. Im thinking like an hour and a half.
Also sounds like I should definitely practice for a month or 2 before going there ;D
honor system greens fee? :-? so, there's like a box at the entrance that youre supposed put 5$ in or something?

Damn dude, youre on fire! 2 aces in what, 3 months?!
I havent even thrown yet this year. I could go today, but Im sure its packed and I hate not being able to play at my own pace. I need to get out there so I can get ahead of you in aces though. Im already behind 2 ;D
I'll be playing this afternoon for the 2nd time this year...I'm looking for my first ace too! Been damn close 3 or 4 times, once on a 400 plus foot snaking monster of a hole, not sure how I did that, but whatever. I have a hole in one in golf but not disc golf...kinda strange, I think it would be quite a bit easier to hit one in disc golf.

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. I can say that my game has improved a lot over the last 2 years. That said, I had no aces for 12 years of playing than 2 in less than 3 months is ridiculous. ;D

How did it go Hawkeye? What course is that you play on. Just curious so I can look it up.
You too Headdy, what's your home course?
Got rained out last night unfortunately. I'm not even sure what the name of the course is, or if it even has one. It's located right next to Wahlert High School in Dubuque, IA. I'm kind of curious now as to whether it has a name...I've never noticed a sign with a name or anything...I think it's considered part of a park....there are 2 baseball diamonds right next to it...anyway can't wait to play again, none of my friends who still live in town like to play tho...well, one does but he's always working

That be it...I did a search right after I posted but was at work and had to, well, work...I hate when that happens...it's not a bad course I don't think, but then again I've only played 3 courses...lots of trees and valleys to eat up discs is my only complaint

Dude, that site's pretty cool Ruckus! Here's my hometown course where I first started playing: http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=96
Three favorites:
Bidwell Park, Chico (I heard they closed this one down though): http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=40
Lagoon Valley, Vacaville: http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=93
Golden Gate Park, SF: http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=2610
And I always heard this one is insane, but never made it down there to play it: http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=79
I don't even have any discs anymore, but there's a few courses nearby that look pretty cool on the site you linked. I may have to get back to it!
QuoteQuoteI'll be playing this afternoon for the 2nd time this year...I'm looking for my first ace too! Been damn close 3 or 4 times, once on a 400 plus foot snaking monster of a hole, not sure how I did that, but whatever. I have a hole in one in golf but not disc golf...kinda strange, I think it would be quite a bit easier to hit one in disc golf.
How did it go Hawkeye? What course is that you play on. Just curious so I can look it up.
You too Headdy, what's your home course?
The course I play the most is Knob Hill. I used to only live about 3 minutes from it, it was awesome. I love the course. I think it has the perfect mix of trees and open holes with every fairway giving you a pretty good lane to throw long. even mix of uphill, downhill, and level holes. concrete tee pads. 3 different pin positions for each hole. those can effect the distance obviously, but I think from the white tees the distance is fair. I havent played enough courses to really compare it, but its definitely my favorite that Ive ever played.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=124&mode=rev
The pictures on here dont really do justice to the course, especially since a few of those pics are taken from the professional/blue tees. I dont think you can see a pin in any of the pics either. It's even hard to tell the elevation changes. It gives you an idea though.

Great to see you on this thread BB! I hope that you do get back out there. I know you got your hands full but I just love the community that is built around each course, something Mr. Yim Yames seems to stress all too often these days.
My friends just had a mixed doubles day so hey, maybe the Mrs. can run out there too.
Also, the site that Headdy linked to is great for more detailed, personal descriptions from players.

Finally got to throw today, went about as good as I expected since I havent played in over a year, or about a year.
Of course, every hole but one was in C position (longest position). Some holes on this course you really have no shot at par when theyre in this position, but to even have a chance, you need to have a long drive that sets up a good approach shot, and then a great 2nd shot to give yourself a putt you can typically sink.
I ended up shooting a +5 over 15 holes going with each hole as a Par 3, but it was an ugly +5 and I took a few mulligans on drives. My drives/release were all over the place, and I couldnt get my discs to turn back after they would turn over. My 2nd shots probably saved me, and my putting was better than I expected.
It felt great to get back out there, but damn do I need some practice. Disc Golf aint like riding a bike. I was much better when I was 17-18 than I am now because I was playing 3-4 times a week. I dont think Im getting any aces until they move the holes into at least B position either ;D

Yeah, that site's pretty sweet! This one was the best reviewed course that I've played:
Stafford Lake Park, Novato: http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=774
I only played it once, and it was pretty tough...I lost a disc or two in some gnarly brush.
I'm thinkin' more and more about going out and buying some discs this weekend... ::)

The interweb is your greatest friend for purchasing discs. You got any buddies that still throw?
Dudes, I'm playing some disc golf today. Second time ever. The last time (2 years ago) things didn't work out so well. Some homeless people were playing, and they were legendary. Throws as far as the eye can see. I was disgusted by this. I told myself I was done with disc golf, until today! Wish me luck! Fucking homeless people!

Belated Good Luck! Hope it went well Walts. [smiley=beer.gif]
What course did you play?
Walt, I think your confusing homeless people with hippies.
Im back on the horse and had to play again today. Much better and more consistent, though I dont know why my release is late every once in awhile (trying to throw it too far/hard?). My distance isnt really there either since I havent been able to get my drivers to come back once they turnover. My +5 yesterday was pretty much bullshit because I took a mulligan on at least 1 shot every hole probably ;D
I was +1 through 8 today with only 1 mulligan though, including a par on a hole Im almost positive I have never shot a 3 when the hole is in C position. Ended up +4 after 11 then it got too dark. Didnt really fall apart, just some tough fucking holes. an uphill 300+ foot hole that goes against the natural curve of my shot. Shit do I hate that hole.
Its fun trying to get back in the groove though. There no chance in hell i'll ever be able to shoot less than probably +3 with the hole positions all at their max now, but damn will it be fun when they are all moved and mostly in A and B position.
I guess I did alright for the 2nd time. Played 45 holes. Lots of fun, and I think I'm hooked. No homeless people bombing them. Yes, they were homeless people. They were the same people that would play free pool and drink water at a bar I would go to. The same person who could bomb'em, could also dominate in pool. What a waste of talent. What could have been? There has to be a Behind the Music story about him. How did a man with such talent, have such a falling from grace? He could drink water faster than anyone too! He was that good!
45 holes?! did you play a course 2 and a half times or does it have 45 holes? :o
disc golf is easier than most sports to become proficient at, and you can learn it just as easy at an older age as opposed to say something like baseball, but it still takes time. If you play a few times a week, Id say youll start to notice significant improvements in a month or so.
IMO its crucial that you have at least 1 driver, mid range, and putter. The more you play, the more you will probably want more discs and that will help even more, but you really need at least 1 of each. I consistently throw 3 different drivers, 2 different mid ranges, and 3 different putters. I KNOW my scores would be worse if I didnt have access to each of them, because there are so many different shot lengths, elevations, and angles in disc golf and each 1 is needed for different shots.
How much it is for the 3 discs? The place we went to was a pretty small 9 hole. Just played it 5 times. I could tell I got better towards the last 9 holes. Not going for moonshots helped. Good exercise. Nice to get out in the sun. I needed to bronze myself after a long Minnesota winter ;)
Ive always used this website. The prices are good and the selection is excellent. I recommend getting the best plastic (Discraft Z plastic, Innova Champion or Star plastic because youll never need to replace them since they dont get dinged, fly better, and are only a few bucks more). Looks like they go for $13. Once you buy discs and are on their email list, they have even better deals:
http://www.everythingdiscgolf.com/
What disc/discs do you already have?
...after looking around this site for a minute, does anyone have a Destroyer?
http://www.everythingdiscgolf.com/Destroyer-STAR-p-12179.html
Sounds like it might be just what I need to get my shots to come back after the turnover.

How do you like this one from Paw Paw. I believe it was over 500 feet straight then right then up again with now relief in site. I was happy shooting a 6 on it. If you can't throw a good forehand roller, you are fucked.
Yeah, I hate holes like that. I need at least some kind of dogleg or else Im out of the fairway after 1 shot ;D
What's in the bag fellas?
These are my regular discs. I carry more and may use some randomly but these are my every hole go to discs. Am slowly upgrading but it takes so much time as I have to beat them up 1st before I have confidence in them to used from my bag.
5 Innovas and 2 Discrafts
Got 4 more coming in the mail and adding a new Discraft disc that I never heard of. I'm slowly switching over to STAR Innova plastic but it's so expensive
Drivers:
Champion Orc
Pro Destroyer
Star Roadrunner
Pro Wraith
Midrange:
Z Glide
Roc
Putter:
Hard Magnet
Awake and only 4 hours to go until tee time and breakfast whiskey! Ahh I love Sundays of Disc golf and 12 hours of football.
If you've never heard of this, it's a neat card game to play while playing with buddies. It levels the playing field because only the losers of a hole get to draw new cards and every card is meant to screw another player so the leader keeps getting hounded. For example, driving with your putter, throwing with your off hand, throwing hammer, removing a disc from a player's bag for the rest of the round, etc.

I tried playing with that once, but I was so bad at the time that it just pissed me off when my far more talented friends managed to park it with a putter around my created mando. ;D

;D Yeah, it can be a frustrating game but loads of fun that brings out the devil in everyone. We typically play on Sundays where we usually have at least an eightsome playing doubles so it gets pretty wacky. If your playing a pitch and putt, the drive with a putter card is pretty useless. I do enjoy the move the tee pad card. I'm not sure I've every played a create your mando card before. Hmmm...

It wasn't as cold as expected. I played at the intermediate level and took it down. Didn't shoot well, but we played the X-holes and survived those without putting up a big number. That saved me.
Awesome time. Not only did we raise almost 1000 for homeless shelters in B'more, I left with a new Star Orc and Star Mako! 8-)
Those advanced and pro masters were at a whole nother level.
Yup, we're crazy! Breaking in a fresh snow course. Was exhausting just hiking through 9 holes. Add to that looking for discs that enter the snow but then slide 4-6 feet underneath the snow and shoveling tee pads. Ugh.....

QuoteHome course (for now) is Trophy Lakes.
Sweet! I was researching disc golf courses to play out in Charleston while I'm down there to catch the Jacket when I remembered that you had posted your home course here. From everything I pulled up, this was the best course to play close to or in Charleston. The only detractors I've heard of this course are that some of the dirt tee pads are a little iffy. Looking forward to it and hoping for good weather cuz we only have one day to play there. :)
I was flipping through channels one night, and on the public access channel they were showing a disc golf tournament. It was funny. Some guy missed a putt and got upset. Then some 19 year old announcer guy was saying how he wears his emotions on his sleeve and how much heart he has.
Playing in those conditions, Ruckus you have the passion and the heart. You can coach that, player! 8-)

Got to play Trophy Lakes the day after the show Dark! I really enjoyed the course even with watercraft buzzing around. The pro shop was awesome and the course was very well groomed and marked. It was definitely a change of pace for be because of the amount of water in play and the absolute lack of elevation change. It really didn't play that long at all but we did play from the short tees so many of the holes were almost pitch and putts. It was the 1st course I played with a buried hole. ;D Was that 13? Anyways, great course. :)
I've been playing alot this summer. But on Tuesday I threw my back out playing. It's not good. Yesterday I thought going to a buddy's house to have a beer or two and smoke one would help my back pain, but I was wrong. I was in pain the whole time and just uncomfortable. I was standing, because I couldn't sit down, and I eventually collapsed/fainted because of the pain. I'm sure I scared my friend. Not really sure if I'll be playing for awhile. I'm worried about the Ween concert on Saturday. But today my back is about 40%. On Saturday if I can put my socks on I'm going. All I can do is lay in bed and watch the George Lopez marathon on Nick At Nite. Good thing I don't have to worry about laughing hurting my back.

You should've, that would've been awesome! And he carded you? So what you look like the 17 year old George Lopez?
My back still isn't the same. I can move a lot better. But everything on my right side has some sort of pain. Right side of my lower back, my right butt cheek, and my right calf. But the pain level has gone down, but the problem is simply just sitting in a chair. But on the positive side it got me to start walking and running again. I can stand upright and everything is just fine. Weird. It sucks to, because I really was getting into disc golf this year. I finally started going on a regular basis and was getting the hang of it.
You've been hitting the course? I've been watching disc golf on tv. I'm trying to be a student of the game during my stint on the DL.
Hope your back gets better Walts. What TV channel has disc golf? I think I'd like to watch that. I bet there are some crazy good players. I'm a total amateur who only uses one disc, but if I saw some good players it might inspire me to improve.

Thanks everyone for the concern by the way.
There's some good clips on Youtube. But the TV show is on some local public access channel around here. So you can image how sweet the play by play guy was. That was almost the best part. The last time I watched they showed the Great Lakes Championship or something like that. It was in Michigan, and the courses were really nice. Oh yeah they're good. It seems about 9 outta 10 pros drive with a backhand. I don't. I drive sidearm style! I'm also a total amateur too. I use two discs! 8-)
I drive sidearm too! For me, it's just easier. It takes less effort to throw it far that way. A flick of the arm, wrist, and finger, with a slight twist of the torso and a step or two forward, and you can really fling it! One of my buddies drives backhand, and he can throw it a little farther than me, but he puts SOOO much more effort into each drive. Not usually worth it IMO. But If I wanna get really good, I should probably practice both ways.
I can only imagine the play buy play guy. Ha! Gotta love local TV. I miss it. I don't get any local stations right now. Just DirecTV crap.
I drive by doing a 360 and throw it backhand. Spin-o-rama, baby!

That's Hawkeye and I saying too much work, but maybe we need to step our game up? You going pro?

I actually havent even played yet this year :-[
QuoteQuoteQuoteI've been playing alot this summer.
How's your back brother? On a side note, I got carded for smokes last week. Counter dude says, "You look like George Lopez man." I nearly slapped him across the counter. You just don't say that man.
;D
Dude, I play at least once a week year around give or take.
As for driving, I had a torn rotator cuff for the last couple of years that prevented me from Flicking but it's all good now. Flick and backhand as required by the hole. Of course I can't throw it like Headdy can but who really can?
I like to get down on some FROLF every now and again!!
Started playin in college, where there's a really nice course just outside of Blacksburg, VA
...came back to the northeast and I haven't found anything that compares.
There's a nice course off the Taconic in Westchester County, NY and another in Mt. Kisco...but that's all I've gotten to.
Anyone from/play/know of any courses in the northeast area they love? I'd be happy to get down on some new courses.

I really like the course I play around here the most, Knob Hill....http://www.dgcoursereview.com/reviews.php?id=124&mode=rev
Offers the best variety of difficulty, length, elevation changes, and just general hole structure of any course Ive ever played. Some holes have more narrow fairways, but overall its very fair.
tis my favorite course near my house:

Nice courses guys!
My buddy that works at the brewery, they are celebrating their 150th anniversary, and they planted 150 trees in their home town of New Ulm MN and then planted 150 trees in Mankato. They planted the ones in Mankato around the disc golf course and they made sure the trees planted were cleared by the board.
The Board = one guy. ;D

Expect a friend request in a week or so...
I haven't gotten a friend request Walts. ;)
So yeah...feelin' rather rough around the edges from the Truckers show, me and some buddies managed to grind out eighteen holes in 102 degree weather with the index in the who knows where range. It was stupid but I guess we all are. Nothing a little gatorade, lemonade, Early Times and Tecate couldn't overcome. I did lose my #1 tag however

Not stupid. Hot weather helps you sweat out the booze. Less work for the liver

Yeah, I don't think you'll ever get one. I'm not a people person. I don't really wanna catch up with old friends and old girlfriends. I feel safe on Myspace and only use it for band updates.
I just found out about this tag system. How does it all work? You just get challenged and you have to accept?
Sleet or heat, Ruckus is throwing them thangs! 8-)

I strangely have no problem staying in touch with exes. Yeah, I'm weird like that. Well the tag system can vary as each state has one if you are member of their association or whatever. We don't care about that. Instead, we have a crew of about 12 of us that play regularly with each other, at least weekly. My buddy ordered a bunch of mini discs and he painted them 1 through 12. They serve as our markers as well. So if 7 of us are playing, we play a round and then rank how we did and then trade tags. For instance, if all twelve of us play and I win, I take the one. But, if on a random weekday morning, I play heads up against the dude holding the 12 tag and he beats me, I go straight to bottom tag while he shoots to the top. It serves as motivation to hold as low a tag as possible.
I hope that made sense.
That makes sense. Cool way to have competitive fun with buddies.
I'm going out tomorrow to play for the first time. My back still isn't back to normal, but I've been playing bolf lately and my back does fine so hopefully everything goes all right.
Also if you or everyone could, give me some disc golf lingo. You know all the baseball lingo. Homerun = going yard, yack etc. But I need some good old fashion disc golf lingo that will make me look cool!
Alright duder. You can look this all up. Here are some basics.
X Step - The three step routing to generate the most power and consistency on a backhand drive.
Tomahawk, Hammer - Throw it overhand like a baseball. Good to get over trees.
Hyzer - the natural flight of a disc. You throw a backhand righty, it's gonna go right to left. Dip down lower and throw more underhand, a big hyzer.
Anhyzer - exactly the opposite. You come over the top of the disc. If you're throwing backhand, the release point of the disc will be above parallel to the ground. Depending on the speed and glide rating of your disc, this will allow the disc to continue to ride left to right from a right hander or start right than "S" back to the left. Ideal for getting great distance or navigating staggered trees.
"S" Curve - explained
Flick - forehand throw using mostly all arm with a big wrist snap.
Turbo - Typically a putt with the disc parallel to the ground but at around eye level with your fingers around and underneath the disc. Throw while spinning. Good to putt over a bush or to show off.
Some important things to know. Know the discs Speed Rating and Glide Rating and see what works for you. The technology is so crazy now that there are discs for every kind of shot.
Don't get discouraged by a new disc that hyzers to much. The more you use it and wear it in, the more it'll straighten out. Similarly, if you are driving it pretty straight already, a worn disc will start to turn over and dive down.
That's a start. Thanks for wasting my time.
Thank you...I think? I guess the thought of looking up disc golf lingo never came to me. And now that you said it, I did. And you're right there's a lot of lingo sites.
Thanks for the advice, bro. I didn't know you could break in a disc. That's kinda cool.

;D No problem man. Ha, now you say shit like, "Yo, u wanna put a little annie (anhyzer) on that." Breaking in a disc is real important at the very least in understanding what to expect from your disc.
16the hole at Druid Hill, yesterday, 11/28/2010, 12:10 pm.
3rd ace of my life and first skip ace. They had move the basket to a position on the right with a huge tree on the right. Usually I'll rip a Roc straight but this time I took a little off and flicked my Destroyer. It went dead straight then turned right a bit at the end, skipped off the ground and straight into the chains. My weekend was complete. 8-) :o :) ;D :D

You know last year I would have thought you were joking. But I still can't believe how fucked up my back was from disc golf. I seriously could barely get out of bed to go to the bathroom or whatever for a month. Good thing I was collecting unemployment, but also I didn't have health insurance. :-/
Ahh it's spring and I know some of you are trudging out to chuck a few holes. I've been able to hit a couple of courses the last couple of weeks and the games is coming together. I think the torn rotator cuff issue that was nagging me for years is finally all good as I've been flicking further than ever with no pain. The best news is that our home course, the one I'm moving right next to is adding an entirely new 18 holes in addition to the 27 it already has. :)
Hope someone gets an ace this season.

;D I saw that movie once, a long time ago, so I wasn't sure if it was what I thought it was.
It's been nice because I don't get great distance off of my back hand so being able to flick pain free has enabled me to hang with some of the longer drivers on the long holes.
hey guys... my brother has been going on and on about disc golf for a while and we both played the ps3 move disc golf game all winter.. he went last weekend for the first time and played at a course over in SoCal and had alot of fun...
i want to get a round in this weekend and my question is.. is this a good activity for a first date? i know the rules and all but i need to buy a couple drivers (i know there are more discs to have but i'm told that is really all you need for your first time)
P.S. the chick i'm taking out on a date has mentioned she likes putt-putt golf

What's a date? People still do that?
I think it's a good place to go but I'm biased. Hopefully it's not too challenging a course where it gets frustrating. Also, if you are gonna get just a couple of drivers and your date is going to use one, I'd get a lighter fairway driver with low speed and high glide ratings. Otherwise it could make for a not fun throwing experience for her unless she's like super athlete girl. Having a putter doesn't hurt either.
Have fun Tyler! What's the closest course to you?
Very delayed post here, but got my first Ace on 5-25-11. Hole # 13 in Marietta, OH. Par 3, 195 ft, slightly uphill. I flicked one out to the right a little bit, it came back left, and just as it started doing its double curve back to the right, it hit the chains! Boo-yah!
The funny thing is, we were just about to quit the hole before that. This course is really wide-open and pretty easy on holes 1-13. Then you head into 3 impossible holes in the woods, then 2 more after you exit the woods. Anyway, on hole 12, a really easy hole, I threw kind of a shitty drive that didn't go too far and kind of dove down and to the left. The grass was pretty long and it still had clippings all over from the last mow job. I couldn't find the disk. We walked back and forth down each wind-row of mowed grass for probably 20-25 mins...just could not see the disk. Then, right when we were about to quit, I found it. Finished the hole with a par, walked over to the next hole and promptly Aced it. 8)
Unfortunately the tops of each basket weren't there...the plastic parts above the chains that list the hole number and sometimes point to the next hole...so I couldn't write my name on the basket...that's what we used to do back in the Dubuque, IA, course, anyway.
Here's to hoping for some more Aces this year from y'all!
BADASS! Congrats Dan! Glad you guys stayed on. Can't beat that feeling!
Thats awesome man. Im still in search of my first, last time out i skimmed the chains and then four holes later skipped one and hit the basket. Itll happen one of these days.

You'd have to wait for a few weeks in all liklihood, but I could definitely send some discs your way...I probably have 30ish discs (though some have probably been lost between move after move), but either way I have more than I carry whenever I play.
