...I still think it is bad ass....I fucking heard this commercial on the radio the other day (I think it was for some stupid cell phone service) and Chris Cornell had lended his voice to the commercial to advertise his new album too and at the end of it this stupid women's voice comes on talking about how much of a hottie Chris Cornell is ....I nearly vomited, how was that guy in Soundgarden??? I thought he was this pissed rocker actually concerned about making good music, what happened to you Chris?.....
That album was their high-water mark that's for sure. Screw the grunge tag: Badmotorfinger was a great great great badmotherfucking hard rock record. Boy oh boy do I not like Audioslave and the Cornell solo stuff is just as boring. Still, I'd love it if Soundgarden made a comeback which has been rumoured for a little while now.

I like Louder Than Love, Badmotorfinger & Superunknown equally for different reasons. & with regards to Chris's solo album's, have you heard Euphoria Morning?
There's a B&W photo of Jerry Garcia (Egypt '78) in the latest issue of UNCUT.
I swear I thought it was Kim Thayil @ first glance ;D
This still tops out anything else in "grunge" for me. Soundgarden was and will always be perfect for me. badmotorfinger is one that I throw on when I need to get the juices flowing. Superunknown is one that I like to throw on when my mind is somewhere ..... else.

Same for me.
Soundgarden were so underrated compared to everyone else at the time. I always say to myself: How many Nirvana and Pearl Jam rip-offs do you get? (even though they can't pull it off) But you never get a Soundgarden one cause no one could touch them.
I watched that fashion thing that Chris was on the other week with Timberland... I wanted to puke. :'(
First off, thanks for posting this random ass music, Tracy. It makes me happy.
Secondly, Chris Cornell has had the best voice in modern rock in the last 20 years. HOW CAN YOU HIT THOSE NOTES?!?!!?
Quote...I still think it is bad ass...
me too
it's just that, when I first heard it, man, it was like, wow. A
little bit like (and I'm not really comparing, b/c there's only 1 monster of heavy metal) when I heard Paranoid or War Pigs for the first time. Sonic rush of thuunder with a groove.

I too thought EM was a decent solo record. I would imagine most SG fans might have not liked it bc its not rock, but I thought it was solid.
I think BMF and SU are pretty equivalent. They each are very good and bring something to the table

Honestly, I think:
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Alice in Chains
Stone Temple Pilots
each had their own sound...I dont think any of them ripped off one another
You want to know the most UNDERRATED band from then, look here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWZoESAq72Q
Not only were they the most underrated band in early 'grunge', but they quite possibly were the most talented
I only found out about them in the last yr or 2, and am amazed they didnt get more recognition. Theyre FUCKIN GREAT, and their sound is a perfect combination of grunge/alternative and classic rock

Honestly, last summer whenever I was just searching around to make a 90's mix, I stumbled on Screaming Trees. Lanegan impresses me though and at some point Ill try to get his solo stuff
I was only 12 when Dust/All I Know came out, and 8 when Sweet Oblivion/Nearly Lost You was released, so I cant say Ive dug too deep
Its funny bc when I heard it last year, I def remember hearing All I Know back then, but these days I just cant believe they didnt get the exposure/play the other bands did
Screaming Trees were more talented than the rest of them pretty much

On Hype! there is the funniest quote by Van Connor where he says something along the lines of "There are tons of bands out there but the trees are a ton of band." ;D Have you seen it?

As a clean-looking and clean-living (beer and wine not included) Deadhead, I'll have to check that Uncut cover out.
Nope, I haven't heard that Cornell album. I did see a recent exclusive concert that Chris put on for one of the music TV stations I work for. His solo material was pretty good live, but it couldn't compare to the odd Soundgarden tune he played, at least sonically speaking.
I've loved everything Chris Cornell from the beginning. (Except maybe that new solo record. I'm with you on that one db. ;))
But Bad MF'n! Motor Finger (SATAN OSCILLATE MY METALLIC SONATAS) and Louder Than Love still get the rotation at least once every couple of months. I can't say that about a lot of my old stuff. What CD's from the grunge era do you guys still pull out on a regular basis?

I've posted this before, but the best show I ever saw was the Trees in Tallahassee at the Moon after Sweet Oblivion. Not even a contest. The Connor brother were both channeling their inner Pete Townshend and Lannegan was just planted font and center for 2 hours of happy pain.
I was cool towards the Gutter Twins release and initially thought the songs would be better if Dulli just sang them - My mind has been changing.
And for the millionth time, if you're Seattle inclined you must start listenting to the Afghan Whigs. As, the first non-Seattle band signed to Sub Pop they floated in these circles and their catalog surpasses all of the Seattle titans in my opinion.
i love SG and chris cornell--the BEST voice of that scene---i had such a crush on him
i don't put stone temple pilots in that category at all (yuck) the most uncreative put together act since the sex pistols.
QuoteWhat CD's from the grunge era do you guys still pull out on a regular basis?
Strictly speaking bands/albums labeled as "grundge" BMF, Louder Then Love, and Superunknown. I haven't listed to Nevermind in quite some time. Next closest to SG would be Dirt from AIC. Not sure how that is grunge but it always got labled as that. Such a blistering album.
I think I'll throw BMF on right now.
Mmmmm, the sounds of my childhood.... Another great one that was not yet mentioned was The Melvins. :P

Ahh yes, Dirt still gets the dust knocked off on occasion as well. Singles soundtrack is also a favorite of the time. It brings back some crazy memories when I put that one on.

Dirt never needs dusted off, it is forever in my rotation... I did not like L7 or Babes in Toyland.... I do still love the Breeders though! :)
Pixies surfer rosa and doolittle almost everyday
For me, the only album from the grunge era that survived was Nirvana Unplugged.
unless you count afghan whigs.

Not sure if I would include Afghan Whigs, Breeders, or Pixies as part of Grunge. I love all 3, they are not "grunge" even though Nirvana stole their basic frame work....at least to me. But that's the vodka talking at this point.

But what is grunge? Or what was grunge? Not sure if anyone knows where the term even came from. Is every band on the Singles soundtrack grunge? The Trees and Smashing Pumpkins are both on there - I would hardly pigeonhole either in this catagory.
I resented Nirvana and Nevermind because my favorite places were overrun with strange new people almost overnight. My strange little group of friends suddenly had hundreds of well-washed people dressed like lumberjacks stage diving like Eddie Vedder.
But looking back, that album killed the commercial viability of bad music for at least 5 years and ushered in what I consider the best era of music of my almost 40 year-old life. And if I listen again it is obvious that that piece of work is an artistic masterpiece.
I'm glad I saw Nirvana before KC did himself in. My friend and I drove to New Orleans under the guise of seeing the Breeders (they opened), we stayed for Nirvana and they were impressive (Dave Grohl hit his drums like he was trying to kill them). Lastly, the Afghan Whigs are a soul band specializing in rythmic noise. They changed "My World is Empty" by the Supremes from a forlurn song about love into a song about dark obsession. If they're grunge, then count me in.

;D
To answer your question, honestly I have no clue. I hate the sub genrification of music. I really do not care if it's grunge, grindcore, hardcore, punk, power pop, Oi, alternative, retro, dream pop, shoegaze, Britpop, speed metal, doom metal, black metal, alt country, folk, folk core.....as long as it's good it's good.
isn't Neil Young the godfather of grunge? well, he said it best:
It's not allright to say goodbye
Badmotorfinger was a great album and the last one I really like from them. I saw them open for several bands like Danzig and Voivod and they would put on a hell of a show, which was what swayed from what I originally thought of them; more cock rock. I like how they were used in that movie Pacific Heights. But, I still think the best so-called grunge bands were Mudhoney, and the Melvins. Tad is cool too. I remember when Subpop sent me my Touch Me I'm Sick 7'' I had to play it for all of my friends before we could go party. They hated it, yet soon they were all Nirvana fans and wanted to borrow all of my meat puppets and husker du albums.
The pixies beat them all and are not grunge . But the greatest pop band to have ever existed. And I say POP like i mean it.

Im 24, and I would have to agree that the first half of the 90's is def the best period of music Ive been alive for
I kind of caught on a couple years late, well, because I was like 8 when Nevermind dropped, but I was listening to most of those bands by '96
Plus, although DB, True, and a couple others probably only really understand what Im saying, ~91-96 is considered the "Golden Era" of Hip Hop and for good reason
And your def spot on with the commercial aspect. Once Cobain's star started to dim by 97 or so, about all these bands were done except PJ and nu-metal, boy bands, and the Spears' came to the forefront. In the Hip Hop community by this time, 2Pac, Biggie, and Big L were all dead, Wu Tang Clan were releasing solo albums, and most of those guys like KRS-One and other from the 80's were long gone. Who took the torch? Master P, Cash Money Millionaire crew (namely Juvenile), and others.
Spot-On my man
Im not sure 'popular' music will ever get back to that level

This song is ironic (I think it's irony) on so many levels. I guess I love you as well. And donkeys.

Wow, thanks for that. I was so pleasantly surprised by how good they sounded on that reunion tour. The only other time I saw my Gods was in Tallahassee after Bossanova. For reasons still unclear to me, about 50 minutes into the show Black/Frank/Charles stormed off the stage in some sort of tizzy never to return. My mind went there last night when all of this Jim got hurt stuff started breaking and some were saying he stormed off the stage. Get well soon brother.
If you haven't allready, watch Loud Quiet Loud - a great behind-the-scenes look at the reunion tour. Thanks Brian.
much love for both Sap and Jar of Flies. still in regular rotation after all these years...
and of course, all things Pearl Jam.
