Title: Ray Lamontagne
Post by: rob on Sep 04, 2006, 12:56 AM
Til The Sun Turns Black

Recorded at the same studio as Z (Allaire)

Got it Saturday. Music doesn't get much better than this.......amazing. Be Here Now blows my mind..........talk about atmosphere, damn. Been reading some mediocre online reviews (Rolling Stone, 2 and a half stars).......I don't get it  ???.........kudos to Ray and Ethan for not doing an exact copy of the debut CD. Superb artist.

I'm only just getting into this artist but what a find!
I love Trouble. I haven't listened to Till The Sun Turns Black yet, I've got that to look forward to (need to space out my new CDs a bit)
I read a good review on AMG, I think it was 4/5.

I played Til The Sun Turns Black for the first time last night (it somehow magically made it's way to the top of my unlistened-to pile!)
Amazing album! I ended up playing it three times in a row.
The opening track is simply breathtaking...

I just think if we keep our hearts together

Maybe we can make this last a lifetime

Are there really still men out there who think like that??????????

Last nights show at the Vic was AWESOME!  The crowd was really respectful and cool.  In the quiet moments there were lots of shout-outs:  "WE LOVE YOU, RAY!"  And we do.  No doubt.  This man is shy, humble, and oh so sweet.  He started singing "Can I Stay" (so sweet!) and I guess he screwed up (didn't sound like it to me) so he's like a little kid, says he's sorry, but he'll just start over again.  I really can't describe it in words here, but it was a special moment because you could just FEEL the vibe from the whole crowd and we were all like, "it's okay, man, we're just blessed to be here in this place listening to your incredible voice and your beautiful music"  He's not used to the spotlight AT ALL.  Anyway, I'm rambling, here's the set list:
EMPTY
BARFLY
GONE AWAY FROM ME
HOLD YOU IN MY ARMS
SHELTER
3 MORE DAYS
JOLENE
NARROW ESCAPE
(You don't know what it's like to love somebody...is that the name of this song??  The only one that's not his)
TROUBLE
TIL THE SUN TURNS BLACK
CAN I STAY
FOREVER MY FRIEND (I got up and danced to this one!  I just couldn't stand (ha!) sitting down anymore!  It was FANTASTIC!)
ALL THE WILD HORSES

Anyhoo, I really thought he would play ALL his songs and maybe a few more covers, but whatever.  I mostly missed HOW COME and YOU CAN BRING ME FLOWERS.  I was so bummed not to hear those two, but if the show's not sold out tonight, who knows?!  Maybe I'll boogie down and check it out!  The only problem was going out after the show to Wise Fools Pub to see one of my favorite local Chicago bands, Hello Dave, then pool til 3:00 am......ugh.

Govt Mule was really good.  Warren Haynes is the man.  He still sounds so good and he's a guitar master for sure. Last nights set was fantastic.  Way over two hours and had a lot of reggae vibe to it.

Donavon Frankenreiter opened up and was really good.  Him and his whole band came out for the entire encore.  OK, I don't need to hijack Ray's thread........

Yep, it was the Odeon where the Boss played a fine gig (well, not in his opinion) back in '75.

I like THSTB, the production is a lot more spare than Trouble, it seems to suit the lyrics so much better. On weds he played with a band (3 piece) so it wasn't all stripped done like I've seen him before.

After watching this clip dozens of times, I've came to the conclusion that Ray Lamontagne along with The White Buffalo are the greatest singer/songwriters to emerge in the past few years.  I just don't think anyone can compare to these two incredible musicians.  I just can't wait to see what the future holds for these individuals with soooo much potential.

I just can't ever get enough of either of these men, and I NEED to see them live.  It'd be a truly religious experience for me I'm sure of it.

I was just reading the February 2007 issue of Uncut magazine and there's a pretty good article on Ray.  There's a section called "Who's On Ray's iPod" and this is what it says under Van Morrison:

"He's on another planet.  It's unbelievable what he does.  I appreciate his records very much.  What I love about Veedon Fleece and Astral Weeks is that feeling of wholeness - the orchestration, the instrumentation, the feel - it carries you through from beginning to end.  My Morning Jacket also do it very well."

I knew he was a fan of MMJ, but I really enjoy reading stuff like that.

Looks like I've got a new most anticipated album of 2008...

RAY LAMONTAGNE TO RELEASE THIRD ALBUM,
'GOSSIP IN THE GRAIN' ON SEPTEMBER 9TH

Lauded singer/songwriter, Ray LaMontagne is set to release his much-anticipated third album, Gossip In The Grain, on September 9th on RCA Records. Recorded with returning producer, Ethan Johns in Box, England, and touching upon a range of styles and musical settings- spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry - Gossip In The Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date.

Whereas LaMontagne's two previous albums, 'Trouble' and 'Till The Sun Turns Black', were largely solo affairs, with Johns serving as multi-tasking instrumentalist, Gossip In The Grain sees him joined by members of his touring band, bassist Jennifer Condos and guitarist Eric Heywood (with Johns largely handling drum duties). Along with his band members, LaMontagne is also joined on two tracks - "A Falling Through" and "I Still Care For You" - by singer/songwriter Leona Naess.

As LaMontagne explains "It was time to open up a little bit more, not be quite so reserved in my choice of songs that I wanted to record. I'm really very critical of myself and it's sort of a process of opening up. I felt like I was in the right space to show that side of myself." Recently called by Vanity Fair "a fresh reminder that the genuine artist is not yet an extinct species," Gossip In The Grain reconfirms Ray LaMontagne as an artist and a craftsman without limits, a songwriter who is able to work his melodic gifts and distinctive lyricism through any of the myriad musical traditions that catches his fancy.

Tracklisting:
1. Let It Be Me
2. Hey Me, Hey Mama
3. Sarah
4. I Still Care For You
5. Winter Birds
6. Meg White
7. Achin' All The Time
8. Henry Nearly Killed Me (It's A Shame)
9. A Falling Through
10. Gossip In The Grain

Saw Ray last night in Indianapolis, kicking off his new tour.  He played a lot of new stuff.  It sounds really good.  Full band for most of it...a couple crowd of solo songs.  The first time I saw him at Bonnaroo 2005 and I was surprised (I don't know why) at how awesome his voice still is.  He's so strong in the vox.

If you get a chance, go see him.  He's amazing.  Take a girl...obviously.  Or go by yourself and wait (if you know what I mean  ;)).  The new cd is going to be better than the last one but not quite as good as the first one.  But it will be awesome nonetheless.  Meg White is a fun song.

FYI-Ethan Johns is playing drums for him!

Well, it's not like I don't love Sun too, it's just that I thought it was too busy and there were a couple of songs that didn't do it for me.  For example, Empty is one of my favorite songs of all time...EVER, but I like the version he played at Bonnaroo better than the Sun version.  Every song did it for me on Trouble.  I was in a different place in my life with each album, so I'm sure that has its own influence.  Maybe that will change one day.  Let's get this straight...Ray is a bamf.

Alright db, I'm only going to listen to one song tonight, which should it be?  Here's hoping the album comes into work tomorrow.

Haha thought you might end up listening to more than one. Winter Birds is another one that really hit me...there's not a bad track on the album.

I'm loving this album...a lot better than the last one.  I like the Horns on the first song.

I can't imagine any serious music fan not being instantly impressed by I Still Care For You (unless they don't have a heart, of course!)

What an incredible, incredibly beautiful song  :'( :'( :'(

I like all the tracks on the album, I personally don't find that the mood/tempo flows so well...but that's not even a complaint.

+ inspired by that dude who started the It Still Moves re:edited thread, I know that I can just re:edit the album for my own listening pleasure if I really want to  ;)

I'm with you dB.  I think Til the Sun Turns Black is the perfect example of a flowing mood/tempo and that's probably why it's one of my favourites from this decade.

Download this before it disappears: http://fuelfriendsblog.com/listenup/Ray%20Boulder/Heaven%20Is%20A%20Honky%20Tonk.mp3

"Heaven is a Honky Tonk" (Live on Austin City Limits).  I fell for it hard a while back and haven't been able to find it for months.  It was written as a tribute to Johnny Cash and Townes Van Zandt.
