Whoa!!!! These guys ARE BADASS. Thanks Riny!
"The Rat" is blowing my mind over and over again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxdAYTR0Fic&feature=related ;)they will be at Langerdo this year
That would have been one badass show Black Lips and Deerhunter.

I want to see a show at THIS venue......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdE8oGZyc1A&feature=related
This is a coment someone left about one of their shows......
"They brought their own light show and a smoke machine. The smoke machine was a particularly good idea."
I like the way these guys opperate.
I just heard "The Rat" on our local college radio station. I've got a feeling these guys are going to blow up big time.
P.S.
Riny,
"Tortured-Artist Saint" does remind me of 24hr. Frontdesk. Good Call :)
Ha! These guys are epic...my boys out of Augusta, GA. A few of the guys got their start in a band called 'Redbelly'... Hardy(vocals), Walker(guitar) and Scarboro(drums). They were putting out more of a classic southern rock sound with 'Redbelly', but I'm pleased at what they've been doing with this project. This is the one to take off, so keep them eyes peeled.
It's so nice to see truly humble artists who put their noses to the grindstone for so many years, begin to get the recognition that they deserve.
D E A D C O N F E D E R A T E...
I'll get to see them in Athens for their record release party in september. quite excited.
QuoteI'll get to see them in Athens for their record release party in september. quite excited.
Do you have that date Tom?
i heard about this band because people said they were the american 'verve'....not sure if that's true but i really like them and i'm annoyed i missed their show here.
I know these guys got great reviews opening for DBT. I usually like just about anyone who opens for DBT, i'll have to check these guys out.
Dead Confederate will bring new meaning to notion that the "the South's gonna do it again." Shit, the South never actually stopped doing it. It just became uncool to actually like what they've been doing, and now DC are gonna change that. Imagine a brooding intense mix of guitar rock that wails like Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane," MMJ at their most fiercest with a little Sonic Youth and The Verve thrown in for good measure. Damn, makes me want to smoke pot or start drinking that cough syrup I was hooked on for so many years.
Here is the review from SPIN Magazine. Seems pretty accurate to me. I like this band. Also, they mention My Morning Jacket in the review!
http://www.spin.com/reviews/dead-confederate-wrecking-ball-artists-organization
FYI. They're playing a MMJ afterparty in Milwaukee, WI at Mo's on Oct. 3rd at midnight.
It's interesting having two main songwriters with different styles. I like everything I've heard so far, Memorial Day Night gets me every time.
The new WRECKORD is out now! Get it while it's HOT!

They're coming to Lansing in December with Manchester Orchestra. Manchester puts on a sweet show so I'll definitely be hitting that up. Plus they're playing in a bar that holds like 200 people.
They're playing the 40 watt here in Athens tomorrow night. You bet your ass I'll be up front and enjoying me some rock show.

unfortunately I'm not there tonight. didn't get any sleep last night and worked on shitty concrete floor in shitty shoes all day. i'm wiped out. I will be catching them when they hit town in December, though. They'll be nice and road-worn by then, too.

Aw, sorry to hear that. Hopefully the rest did you some good though.
Just been listening on Myspace. :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
EDIT: Ordered the album.
Me too.
Have just ordered the EP for a very reasonable price.
Hope they come to London / UK soon.
They're going to be on Conan Oct. 10th! I ordered the new CD this week, hoping it arrives before Monday nights show.

I'm definitely going but I'm unsure on the time of the show. Dead Confederate's myspace says they play from 7:45 - 8:45 and RFT says the show starts at 8:30.? Anyway I'll be there half an hour or so before the show .. whenever that is.

Bluebird's site says doors at 8. I plan to call them tomorrow to verify.
Sweet! I'm in. I may not get there until about 9. E-mail coming your way Mike.
This morning on the way to work I was thinking that Goner/It is a Rose might be one of the best back to back Rock and Roll combos ever! I was a bit skeptical at first but I love this album.
Bad ass!
There was a $20 in the wallet this AM. Apparently that conterfeit press was up and running overnight!
These guys are playing the Mercury Lounge in NYC on 10/9, with 3 other bands on the bill. Funny thing is these guys are the third band and the headliner is "Catfish Haven"? Anyone heard of them?
Yeah, Catfish Haven opened for MMJ in Chicago '06. I thought they were good but not great.
QuoteYeah, Catfish Haven opened for MMJ in Chicago '06. I thought they were good but not great.
Ah OK, interesting. The whole bill is:
Catfish Haven 10:30
Dead Confederate 9:30
Kuroma 8:30
Mean Creek 7:30
Thu 10/9
The show is just 10 bucks... might have to check it out.
For $10 I'd be all over that.
I wasn't overly impressed with Catfish.
QuoteI wasn't overly impressed with Catfish.
Me neither, what was the name of the first band last night? Do you remember?
Catfish aren't bad. They've got a nice barroom sound, otherwise a bit average.
But really. CONAN??? Do you realize how big these guys have made it? This could be their OBH moment!
QuoteQuoteI wasn't overly impressed with Catfish.

You mean the ones that looked like they just came from the St Louis Stock Exchange
QuoteQuoteI wasn't overly impressed with Catfish.

It was Jon Hardy & the Public.
I wish DC's set was longer but considering the lack of crowd I'm just glad they played. If I'd have thought of it I would have shot Beatle Bob a message to show up.
Hopefully they will come back and have a proper audience although I wouldn't blame them if they didn't :-[ I do think Conan will open up alot of doors for them... that is I think Europe will love them.

Yep. Another US band that no one in the US knows. Kinda sad.
Glad you made it home okay BTW.

Catfish Haven are one of my favorite bands. The singer, George Hunter has a very soulful voice, a blend of Gregg Allman, Ray Lamontagne, Joe Cocker, Richard Manuel, with a little Ronnie Van Zant...just a little. They rock pretty well and their last cd, Tell Me is awesome start to finish. I've seen them twice this year and haven't been disappointed. Once, with George on acoustic with a couple of doo-wop singers and another time with George on electric the whole time. Miguel is the bass player and he's a very wirey fella who brings a lot of energy to the stage. I promise you'll love them...I promise.
I would give anything to go see Catfish Haven and Dead Confederate at a MMJ Aftershow Party...well almost anything.
***bump***
Conan O'Brien tonight...tune in and report back. Thanks for your support.
On the information box from our able provider, all the it says is, "Dead Confederates perform". Nothing about any other guests, just the band.

Yeah, they're just that good... ;) Let's see if Conan gets as excited about them as he did about MMJ on the OBH appearance. He was pumped.

I've never seen Conan that excited about any other performance.
The singer looks like Edward Furlong and I have a telecaster that looks just like that, weird.
The other guitar player fell down at the end of the song, the keyboard player laughed and turned to see if he was ok, then Conan made a joke about it. Not sure what song it was. Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed.
Fuck Yeah!!! I'm so proud of those guys...they've come a long way since the 'Redbelly' days. Tearin' up 'The Rat' on Conan...nice!
***So, Walker took a spill over one of the monitors at the end of the performance. Good thing the stage is floor level. Careful up there guys...that goes for all of ya!
Two alarms and I still slept through Conan :( Guess it'll be up tomorrow on the Nbc site.

I will be GONE! You will never KNOW! ;D
I missed Conan. Dammit, I need to start tying strings around my finger again like in first grade.

Ha Ha, watch out for the monitors, I think most people just stand still for their Conan performance, I was laughing with you not at you.
P.S.
I need to find that Vinyl stat. I just assumed there would only be CD's this go around. It was nice to see I was wrong.
Listening to "The Rat" on vinyl right now! Picked it up at the MMJ aftershow in Milwaukee and talked to the singer for a bit. Unfortunately I only caught 2 songs at the aftershow and my friends weren't digging them. Not surprising though after just seeing an MMJ show...tough act to follow!
The more I listen to the new album the more I need to see this band live...wow these guys are good.

I can't stop listening it, one of my favorite releases of the year so far. You should try it again perhaps with incense and low-lighting and maybe a beanbag chair :)
Something about them reminds me of the first four Sabbath albums, I thought I might be crazy for thinking that until I read where the guy's initially "bonded" partly because they're are all Sabbath fans.

NO NO NO....no Verve comparisons. These guys are not Britpop, they are from Athens, Ga and they ROCK! I like this from the jambase article.
If you go to the band's MySpace page they list their influences solely as "On The Beach, Meddle, Bleach." These influence sections are generally a bunch of crap. How do you sum up a band with a few words? Well, you don't, but by listing these three seminal albums Dead Confederate does a nice job opening a window into their world. The bile-spitting brilliance of Neil Young's roots-rocker On The Beach, the expansive, haunting psychedelia of Pink Floyd's Meddle, and the scary similarity between Morris' pain-seared screams and Cobain's on Bleach all work together to form a nice composite of what they're going for. But this, of course, is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Inside their crushing iron wall of noise are hints of Radiohead, Sonic Youth, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Dinosaur Jr., Dead Meadow and more.
you probably haven't even heard early verve---"the News Underneath" sounds like early verve--go listen to "A Northern Soul" The verve were not really considered britpop until Urban Hymns..classic britpop at that time was oasis/blur/stone roses, etc--also many of those brit pop bands weren't just influenced by the kinks and the beatles, they were influenced by dinosaur jr. and sonic youth-- the verve were never your typical brit pop band, they were compared to pink floyd when they came out-not total shoe gaze and not brit pop/as for a northern soul, it's incredible--the guy from the boo radleys loved 'a northern soul' so much, he got it tattooed on him.
when i first heard dead confederate, reviewers were calling them the american verve--then they got compared to MMJ in rolling stone and-----it's kind of ridiculous to say they sound like parts of radiohead, MMJ, NY, sonic youth---etc....i mean you've just named off every major genre out there. i don't even hear how KOL sound like MMJ at all.
dead confederate is one of those bands where you can hear whatever your influences are--maybe that's what makes this album weak for me...it's like a character foil in a book--doesn't really stand on its own but it just reminds of something else---
that said, i love 'the rat'

you just love talking about the Verve....lol.
I think Dead Confederate can be compared to other bands but bands today always get compared. I think they completely stand up on their own. I think they write great songs and its really not the guys fault if his voice sounds like other people. It is just good Southern Rock to me.
and I also had to add...NOBODY should be compared to Neil Young's On The Beach.
FTR, i don't hear it in the voice--it's in the guitar
okay, guilty--no more hijacking threads to talk about the verve lol

"Dead Confederate — singer/guitarist Hardy Morris, bassist Brantley Senn, guitarist Walker Howle, keyboardist John Watkins, and drummer Jason Scarboro — first bonded over Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath ("stoner shit," as Morris puts it) when they attended high school together in Augusta, Georgia. After keeping a band loosely together throughout college, the five-piece got serious when they were faced with the prospect of finding careers outside of music. After the small-town crew moved to Atlanta, "We were all kind of huddled together in this little house in the big city," Morris recalls, "Things took a turn and Brantley and I started writing serious personal stuff. We weren't just playing anymore, we were really writing and searching." Dead Confederate was born."

excellent review! This album is in my top 5 for the year.
Oh what has happened here where new Dead Confederate isn't even whispered about. I've given In the Marrow three solid listens and me thinks it's great! The allmusic review was spot on in saying they just don't give a damn about commercial viability and there seems to be lot here that I'm peeling away.
All reviewers should just call them Southern psychedelic grunge from now on. ;D

Saw these guys with about 15 or 20 other people at the Red Palace in DC a few years back. They were totally not into it as the crowd wasn't either so it was basically like a practice session for the band. That said I loved their first ep that's why we went to the show. Will have to check out there new stuff.
