What artists/songs/albums remind you of particular people/periods/events in you life?
Tell us who, where, what & why...tell us your stories.
Brad - Shame
This album reminds me of the first house I lived in when I moved out of my parents. I shared with 2 other guys & had some great, great times. Listening to these tracks reminds me of trying (& failing miserably!) to learn to play the guitar, drinking too much cider & lighting fires we shouldn't have in the back garden.
Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley
This album always reminds me of the 2nd shared house I lived in. One of the other guys in the house was an ex-football hooligan who had spent a few years in prison for being involved in the Hisborough disaster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster
We had a disagreement one night, he threatened me, I feared for my life, climbed out of my window & sneaked back to my parents house under the cover of darkness.
Soundgarden - Superunknown / Mark Lanegan - Whiskey For The Holy Ghost / Any of the first 3 Danzig albums
These 3 remind my third shared house. That house was quite simply the most dirty, disgustingly unhygienic house I have ever lived in. Man, what a dump... & what a great time! (the 3 other guys worked at HMV, let's just say I made good use of their staff discounts!)
Jeff Beck - Hi Ho Silver Lining
Reminds me of my Dad, I'll be seeing him in about 3 weeks.
Michael Jackson-Thriller/Tina Turner-Private Dancer - First albums I ever owned. My parents bought them on vinyl for me when I was 5. I made up some killer dance routines. That started my musical obsessions.
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper - When I was 8 I discovered the Beatles. I fell in love with them. I used to have a tiny portable tape player I would carry around with me. I made mix tapes I recorded off the radio on my dad's stereo. I think I irritated my folks.
REM - Life's Rich Pageant - When I was 12 I found out about REM. I decided I loved them and saved all my money and bought all of their tapes. I listened to Life's Rich Pageant so many times I wore it out and had to buy another one. My favorite songs were Swan Swan Hummingbird and Superman. Oh, my poor mom. She had a tape player in her car and would beg me to play anything else.
Age 14-15 - I got a job. So I had a disposable income. I bought Nirvana, Soundgarden-superunknown, tool, ALL, Bad Religion, Fugazi, NOFX, Green Day - Kerplunk had just come out. Ya. I was in heaven. All these bands remind me of making mix tapes and riding my skateboard to McDonald's (where i worked). Also remind me of playing pool in this dude's parent's basement. Rest of high school I loved punk.
Phish - Hoist - I was 18 and was like....WHAT THE F@*$ is this. I hated it. I didn't get why all the college kids were diggin' the Grateful Dead, Phish, and Rusted Root. By my junior year I liked it, but I hated it at first. I was like...uh can we listen to something a little more heavy? Plus, I had a roommate who only listened to Phish when I was 19. I still hate Fee.
Grateful Dead - reminds me of an old roommate. She killed them for me for many years. I still can't listen to Tennessee Jed. It makes me cringe. She played it constantly.
However, Touch of Grey has become our road trip song and we play it and the start and finish of every road trip.
There are too many in between, so....
Finally now....10 years later....Kings of Leon (aha shake), the Black Keys(rubber factory), MMJ (it still moves) all remind me of driving to Bonnaroo.
In middle school I listened to The Sex Pistols and The Dead Kennedy's on my tape player walkman while I rode around suburbia. We built a pretty rad quarter pipe. I remember some pretty sweet jumps off that thing. "Dude, you just got like three feet of air, holy shit." It never looked quite as sweet as it did in our heads when we played it back on the Beta Max. That remindes me of that scene in Napolian Dynomite. Spot On!!
In high school I played Nevermind and Ten so much that my mom probably knew the words to all the songs. I remember buying a guitar and a fender amp around this time I could play this one Helmet song really well.
I remember there was this one year that I listened to "Shellac - At Action Park" like every single night at volumes that no one knew existed. That record is pretty much all I remember about that year (I'm not even sure what year it was), I think I was going to college but I can't be sure about that.

How cool are you?!! Excellent post Beth, I really enjoyed reading that :)
Stevie Wonder - He's Misstra Know It AllMalaysia: 3 years ago, my first back-packing holiday in a while. I had just landed in KL with an Australian friend (who had drunk more that his fair share of free alcohol on the plane & then tried his best to pick up every one of the air hostesses)
We were in a taxi driving towards the city with the Petronas towers in sight when this came on the radio. I remember smiling from ear to ear & feeling completely alive for the first time in years.

Haha, nice stories.
They are really sitcom material. Something like "friends," but with a hooligan :D
I'll try to think of some of my own later.
They should include The Offspring's classic "Smash" record ;D
Jim Croce - any of his work:
Reminds me of my father. My dad spun a lot of good LPs when I was young. Jim stands out the most when I think of those times, along with Cat Stevens and of course Johnny Mathis when it was that time of year. Good memories.
Billy Joel - Piano Man:
Last day of school, freshmen year of college. Obviously there was a party. We all got sloppy drunk and all of a sudden everyone was standing in a circle swaying back and forth, drinks in the air, singing piano man as loud as we could. Good times with good friends, I'll never forget that.
QuoteThey should include The Offspring's classic "Smash" record ;D
Looking forward to hearing some stories Chills!
That album reminds me of drinking with my then fiance & best friends at my favourite bar at the time (the Purple Turtle) where that & Green Day's Dookie used to own the jukebox.
They used to have an excellent selection of world beers & it was there that I first drank Kirin...a sign of things to come? :o

I bet you did get some sweet air! And recorded on beta max! awesome. i love watching people's videos when they were kids! So cool.

I love this sentence! Your old roommate sounds scary!

drinking with my then finance
Finance :-?
Is that a slip or do you mean she actually financed your expensive drinking habit back then ;)
Anyway, Smash and Dookie, the only albums that mattered.
Smash was the first record I ever bought. It was PUNK, man :D
After that all hell broke loose. Nirvana's In Utero was pretty big, but not as big as the mighty Channel Zero. Belgium's own answer to Pantera. Heavy riffage. After a party at my parents' home, we inevitably ended up racing each other through the garden in stolen (although i preferred 'borrowed') shopping carts. Bad luck if you felt like taking the passenger seat, we had some damn irresponsible drivers :D
The vibe now reminds me a little of the Pumpkins '1979' video,
if you can think away the swimming pool at least.
Soundtrack:
Channel Zero - Unsafe
or
Primus - Jerry Was A Race Car Driver :)

Very funny indeed ;D
Beck's Odelay and Butthole Surfer's Electriclarryland remind me of robo-tripping when i was 19.
Michael Jackson~Thriller
First album I ever owned. I was 3 and it was fucking awesome. I still remember playing that record.
The Smashing Pumpkins~Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness
14. Teenage angst. Changing. Girls. Thinking I knew everything. This is the album that got me through all of that.
311~Grassroots/Music/311
16 years old. Parties and more girls. Drugs. Summer of love. 8-)
Dave Matthews Band~Before these Crowded Streets
I was obsessed. I still love them and have seen them many times.
Bright Eyes~Fevers and Mirrors/Lifted...
I was 19 when I first heard Bright Eyes and I was blown away. Reminds me of my first apartment.
when i was sixteen, i had a major surgery and missed 3 months of school. all i did was watch mtv, and whenever i hear coldplay's "yellow," i think about being ripped on painkillers and watching tv in my bedroom while waiting for people to come by after school.
vhs or beta's night on fire makes me think of the one time i got to go to sxsw. we saw them at stubb's bbq at this astralwerks showcase. anyway, my best friend and i were under the influence(s) and we ran into our broadcasting professor/faculty sponsor at the show. we thought we were going to get reamed for being irresponsible, but she was really drunk. all was well.
whenever i hear five o clock world by the vouges i remember just starting my job at the station for which i currently work. i used to have a 3.5 hour shift on saturdays only and i would monitor this syndicated program called american gold. they played some good music on that show. too bad we don't run it anymore.
also, kings of leon's youth and young manhood= my party phase

They were on Craig Ferguson (can anybody understand anything that guy says?) last night -
ummm...no! i think it was maxim, that gave craig ferguson the "why the fuck is this show still on" award
QuoteMicheal Jackson~Thriller
First album I ever owned. I was 3 and it was fucking awesome. I still remember playing that record.
That rules! Hearing Thriller reminds me of eating this new thing McDonald's had just put out called Chicken McNuggets and watching that wicked video for the song Thriller!
Heart of Gold - being in the back of my parent's VW bug in 1972-73 and hearing this song. I was blown away at 6 or 7 years of age. I still remember looking out the window and loving the sound of that guitar!
Yellow Ledbetter - I recall being in my car and going on appointments and hearing this song on the radio. This was before I had any device that would play the songs that I wanted to hear such as a cd player, etc. I would literally pull over to the side of the road to hear this song play out before I'd arrive at my destination.
Man, I'm getting old!! :)
I actually just bought the special edition of Thriller a couple months ago...

;D
He's holding a tiger! I love it!
So many music memories! I guess these are more "phases" than memories, but...
1) Country phase - reminds me of elementary school. I thought country music was all there was. Garth Brooks, Brooks 'n Dunn, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, and (eek) Billy Ray Cyrus. Line dancing and mullets at the local bar.
2) Everything changed in fifth grade. Bought my first "non-country" cassettes, Boyz II Men and Kris Kross. Quickly moved on to Green Day's Dookie and Presidents of the USA. I sure thought I was cool for not listening to country anymore.
3) High school grunge and classic rock phase. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, STP, Soundgarden, Zeppelin, Floyd. Still love this stuff.
4) College led to discovering the Jacket, which made me realize that there were really good bands out there that most people had never heard of and to not just accept whatever bands were shoved down our throats on the radio. Thank God for the MMJ!
First tape bought: Something from the brilliant Weird Al collection...not sure which one, though I do remember a Polka Medley that included "Papa Don't Preach"...
First CD bought: That'd be Cypress Hill, Black Sunday (YEEEEEAAAHHH!!). At the time, I had no idea what a bong was, or how you'd make hits from it (didn't know you actually took hits from it), but the music felt a little dangerous, so that was cool...
First concert (on my own): Face to Face, Tilt, probably about 3 or 4 other punk bands at the Guild Theatre in Sacramento. That show still ranks up there as one of the best times I've had with live music.
The albums that I associate with the few years of college where I was most loaded: Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers, Beta Band - Hot Shots Part II, Old 97s - Too Far to Care, and of course, Primal Scream - Screamadelica. I'd come home from school, maybe a class or two early because it was just too nice of a Spring day to spend inside a classroom, pick up some beer on the way. Pitch some horseshoes, bbq, foosball, always have music playing, herb blazing. AAAAHHH...
The MMJ albums that I associate with particular times:
It Still Moves - A camping trip to Shasta County with my future wife, then girlfriend. We fished together, climbed Castle Craggs, made a slow drive up on the north side of Mt. Shasta. There were other albums that were played, but this one defined the trip. We went to one of the Okonokos shows about a month later, and I proposed a few weeks after that.
The Tennessee Fire - My wife and I went to the Fillmore show on Dec. 30th this last year (I know, a day too soon), and escaped the Bay Area on NYE for the coast, and a little quiet. I had actually lost this disc for a couple years and found it the morning of the 31st. I'll always associate this one with HWY 1, fog, and Butano redwoods. It's now my favorite of theirs.
Oh, I love memory lane!
The first album I ever bought was "Chicago X" for my brother's birthday in 1976.
I was only 8 years old or so, and after I gave it to him I asked him each and every day, for months, whether or not he was tired of it and could I have it back. I loved the song "If You Leave Me Now"; plus I like chocolate. Never did get it from him.
The next album I bought was also a gift for a friend's birthday (her name is Mia). I wanted this one back as well but kept quiet about it:
The first album I bought for myself that truly changed my musical interests was The Jam's All Mod Con's. I'll never forget the day I moved in to my apartment in Santa Monica and I was BLASTING the thing and we were drinking dirty vodka martini's with tons of olives stuffed with garlic and celebrating our cool spot on the planet. My new neighbor walked by, heard the tunes, saw the martini's flowing and said to himself (I learned later) that he new we'd be fast friends. Still are. He's a cool dude who still throws fantastic Halloween party's up the Hollywood Hills.
I also vividly recall the first CD I ever bought, The English Beat's "Special Beat Service". I can remember distinctly how I would put both the tape and the cd on listen to the difference in the sound quality between the two. The opening piano of "I Confess" rang so loud and clear, it was remarkable to me... ahh, I'd like a martini.

Bands that evoke memories of my teenage years include Silverchair, No Doubt, Rancid, NOFX, A Tribe Called Quest....Oh Tribe, still a favorite of mine. We used to blast their CDs all of the time, especially while I used to go on "cruises" with two of my best friends during my sophmore and junior year. We usually ended up causing a ruckus somewhere or hitting up a skating spot. i never skated so i was just the "skate ho" i guess.
Young adult years up until now (i would say 18-23) were filled with 311, Jurassic 5, RX Bandits, Zebrahead...A lot of crazier, up beat bands...Pretty much a lot of the more popular stuff. i really didn't start digging into some of the more underground or even just less popular stuff until this year. i've always been one to love any and every type of music...i mean, i've loved bands like pulp, the chainsaw kittens, belle and sebastian, jon spencer blues explosion since i was in high school. i just never really dug myself, it was always someone else showing me a band. i've finally learned that i am going to be the greatest finder of bands that i like....sounds stupid, like i should have learned it earlier, but i'm just stubborn i guess.
current favs: mmj, the new pornographers, the radio dept., beulah, the sea and cake, wilco, etc etc
i'm excited to see where my musical life will be heading. i hope to fall even more in love with music with each coming year. that's how it's been going so far!

A couple of days ago I found a brilliant,
brilliant cover of Don't Stop Till You Get Enough sung in Indian (Punjabi?) :D

Such a great topic...
don't know how I missed this on the first go 'round. I got plenty, here's one:
Anything from The Doors reminds me of my last 2 years of high school. Here's a few of many
Riders on the Storm reminds me of riding around in the country (skipping school) and getting high. We realized that Jim Morrison had a "whispering track" behind all the lyrics he was singning and we had to pull over to the side of the road b/c we were so blown away.
Anything off Soft Parade reminds me of my summer before Sr. year when I spent just about every day at the river at the sandbar and rope swing.
When the Music's Over reminds me of being on the beach in Florida with my best friend K-Bob (when we painted The Doors on the back door of his 1969 Kingswood Estate station wagon with a stick, a pair of my tighty whiteys and some paint stolen from a construction site) and we found this guy frm California who had medical marijuana (pre-rolled joints, like 40 of them) for cancer and we went back to the house and my brother in law the jazz pianist was tooling around on the piano and we got him to listen to (and play) When the Music's Over and in the middle of it he looks at us and says, "Butterflies scream?" and we laughed so hard we had to run out of the house.
Spanish Caravan reminds me of driving in the snow my sr year, pulling someone behind my car on a rope, sitting on a waiter tray, and when the "blowing wind" effect came up on the
song I kept thinking that my tires were spinning.
I got more...

Not sure how I ever missed this one.
As much as I love music, and as emotional it can make me, I really only have 1 "memory" to tell.
uhhhh, there was a time in the 90's (ok, since 1994 on really) where if this is playing, something is gonna get dry humped. My son was conceived to this album hence his first name. It's a name that in Celtic possibly meaning "strongly flooding" which is appropriate for the boy. So this album holds several special places in my heart.

wow i love this thread!
these albums were my life as a kid--my parents used to play them on the record player for me and i'd dance around the dining room table to movin right along and sooner or later:

I kind of wish I could post on here and let everyone know that I lost my virginity to W.A.S.P.'s "Fuck Like A Beast" but I don't believe I am
quite that badass...
:-/
Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape- Reminds me of high school. My sister would play it every morning to wake me up.
Fleetwood Mac/The Eagles Greatest Hits- Makes me think of my Dad and how he plays these two albums every summer or whenever we have a bbq.
I don't think I've lived long enough to have that many song/album memories.
QuoteI kind of wish I could post on here and let everyone know that I lost my virginity to W.A.S.P.'s "Fuck Like A Beast" but I don't believe I am quite that badass...
;D ;D ;D
Stevie Ray Vaughan- Wall of Denial
Neil Young- No More
Both songs about getting clean and sober, both came out in 1989 when I went to rehab and got clean and sober. Heavy hitters there.
QuoteNot sure how I ever missed this one.

Downward Spiral- I had never heard of NIN until 8th grade. I had been going to this little country school out in the middle of no where. When a guy from the big city moved there. We became friends and he introduced me to NIN. Totally opened my mind to a different style of music.
Smashing Pumpkins MCIS Tour Prob my fav all time concert. I think a lost some of my hearing at this show. I remember standing outside the arena before show while they were performing the sound check.
Radiohead in Atlanta 2003. Amazing set in mid October. Not quite raining outside but rather cool mist. This is last road trip we all took before my best friend was killed in a car accident.
Quote

Hey, I was at that show. :)
Listening to Teenage Fanclub reminds me of a RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) school I worked at for a few months during my training.
It was a boarding school out in the middle of nowhere & I used to go for long walks in the surrounding countryside. The soundtrack was a teenage fanclub mix that a Scottish friend had made for me (he put an excellent picture of a drunk Rod Stewart on the cover!)
Everything Flows was my fav song & I used to run it back (these were Sony Walkman days!) & play it again & again.
The children at the school were truly inspiring! One of the teachers/carers must have taught them to say "That'll put a whole in it!" everytime they bumped into something because they all said it. But there was one boy who really meant it, he was as hard as nails, such a strong spirit! He used to make me laugh so hard. Most of the children were content to play by themselves but this boy would always ask me what the others were doing...
"What's Tim doing?"
"He's playing with the cars"
"Is he?! Hey Tim, I want to play with that car!" ;D
The hardest part was helping them get ready for the weekend when their parents would come to pick them up. Some of the parents were always late or didn't seem to give a shit when their saw their child for the first time in 4 or 5 days. Going home for the weekend was optional, some of the children never got picked up at all.

That's awesome Andrew. Thanks to you and Mark, I'm a Fannie.
Cheers MJ :)
Yeah I've been playing the heck out of the fannies recently, can't get enough of them. I don't have their last 3 albums (Howdy! Words Of Wisdom & Man Made) need to pick those up...
Yeah, Is This Music? is such a beautiful song from bandwagonesque
I need to expand on Bandwagonesque. Nick Hornby tells me Songs from Northern Britain is "the next best comfort food you can buy [second to Rubber Soul]".
Not sure how the exchange rate is for you but this is great value (Songs From & Grand Prix)

This might be a case of too much information, but in middle school I vividly remember my first hmmmm, "dream of non-typical dryness" being set to the completely clothed bathing suit girl getting paint thrown all over her from Duran Duran's video from "Rio". I can't hear that song and not snicker now...

Good one, nice way to put it.
Burial - Untrue
This albums reminds me of being at the airport waiting for my flight to Hawaii last year on either the 22nd or 23rd of December. Christmas isn't so big in Japan & a lot of people work through it right up until the 27th, 28th or even 29th. The airport then becomes silly jam-packed with everyone flying off for a couple of days over New Year, a much bigger holiday.
So the airport is always strangely quiet when I fly a few days before Christmas but this time it was deserted...eerily so, like something out of a disaster movie. It was raining hard outside, which only added to the atmosphere.
I wandered out to the furthest gate without passing another soul, this album playing in my noise cancel headphones - which is usually perfect for shutting out the noise of airports, only this time there wasn't any.
I remember sitting down at the very end of the airport, looking back at all the empty gates & grinning from ear-to-ear!
20 days & I'm flying home!!! :D
