THE BLACK CROWES TO RELEASE 'WARPAINT'

FIRST STUDIO ALBUM OF ALL NEW MATERIAL IN SEVEN YEARS

DUE OUT MARCH 4 ON THEIR OWN SILVER ARROW RECORDS LABEL,

DISTRIBUTED BY MEGAFORCE/SONY RED BMG

BAND TO PERFORM 'WARPAINT' IN ITS ENTIRETY ON LIMITED

"ONE NIGHT ONLY" SWING

From the beginning, THE BLACK CROWES have done things their own way. And it's good to know that some things don't change.

WARPAINT—the band's first album of all-new studio material in seven years, due out March 4 worldwide—will be independently released on the band's own newly formed Silver Arrow Records and distributed through Megaforce/Sony Red BMG. It's their first studio release since the acclaimed LIONS album in 2001 (on V2).

Produced and mixed by Paul Stacey at Allaire Studios, Woodstock, NY, the album features 11 songs, all of which were written by CHRIS and RICH ROBINSON, except "God's Got It" by the Reverend Charlie Jackson. The album builds compellingly on the band's trademark adventurous brew of rock, blues, country, soul and gospel.

WARPAINT marks the recording debut of two new band members—guitarist Luther Dickinson and keyboardist Adam MacDougall--who join CHRIS and RICH and drummer Steve Gorman and bassist Sven Pipien. Dickinson, of North Mississippi Allstars, officially steps in to replace producer/guitarist Paul Stacey, whose position with the band was always intended to be temporary. THE BLACK CROWES are deeply appreciative that Stacey committed his genuine talent and time to the band and their performances for most of 2007.

The album's complete track listing is: "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution," "Walk Believer Walk," "O, Josephine," "Evergreen," "We Who See The Deep," "Locust Street," "Movin' On Down The Line," "Wounded Bird," "God's Got It," "There's Gold In Them Hills," and "Whoa Mule."

CHRIS says the album's title signifies "the revolution that could take place in all our souls."

Meanwhile, for the first time in their 18-year career, THE BLACK CROWES will perform an album of theirs in its entirety. On a special run of "One Night Only" shows beginning on March 4, fans will experience WARPAINT performed in its entirety, after which the band will play songs from their catalog and selected surprises. Dates TBA.

THE BLACK CROWES will begin their world tour March 24 by headlining the Byron Bay Festival in Australia. They'll continue their down under trek—their first since 1991—through April 5 before playing special engagements in Tokyo, Amsterdam and London, and concluding with shows in Hamburg and Cologne, Germany (dates TBA).

THE BLACK CROWES have sold over 20 million albums and are known as one of rock's best live acts. They have been called "The Most Rock n' Roll Rock 'n' Roll Band In the World" and a "thoroughbred American rock 'n' freakin' roll band"; their panoramic live shows feature alternating set lists and signature incendiary musical explorations. Catch up with the band at www.blackcrowes.com

Thanks Chief!  Great News.  Warpaint!  I wonder if Luther will tour with them.  That is a strong addition.

One thing I don't get.  What does the "one night only" thing mean.   "On a special run of "One Night Only" shows beginning on March 4"  Huh?

Ya know, I'm surprised there are not more people on this board that are Crowes fans.  Is it just me and the Chief?  What is everyone's opinion on them?  Be honest.

Of course, if you are not a fan, you are not going to be reading this thread are you? Duh, nevermind.

I LOVE the Crowes!!!  I've seen them twice, both times we were like 5th row.  They are one of my favorite bands to see live.  Their music is just great balls-out rock 'n roll.  Good party/drinking music for sure.  Amazingly the only album I've listened to is Tall, and I'm not sure if you would consider that an album?  Don't know much about it, but I've heard it called a "lost album" or "lost recordings" or something.  Of couse I know all the hits too.  I'm sure there are more Crowes fans here!

I'm a casual fan but haven't heard any of their newer work that I thought was great.  On the other hand I am a big Luther fan so maybe he'll  persuade me.  I do own the Live at The Fillmore and "The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down" is very badass.

OK Hermo, you can kick my ass for this one next show we are at together. I had tickets to see them at Riverport when they came last year with Robert Randolph. They were freebies to sit in the Corporate box/spot. I didn't want to fuck around with the nightmare traffic around Riverport so I gave the tickets up....I heard from the person that I gave the tickets to that I missed a pretty good show. :-/ :'(

I saw them a couple of times on the Southern Harmony tour @ Brixton Academy in London. They were absolutely amazing!
I saw them again @ the Royal Albert hall a couple of years later when Amorica came out & they just weren't as good.
I liked Three Snakes but lost interest after Marc left.
Anybody have his 2nd solo album? Keep meaning to buy that...

OK, sweet, so there is some love!

I was also definately sorry to see Marc go.  They were not the same without him.  However, since their "return" a few years ago, I think Rich is raised his game to a whole new level.  I have seen them probably twenty times, and they are definately getting better with age.  The last show a month ago was just spectacular.  And now Luther!  I can't wait to hear it.

Check out this track from the Brother's of a Feather CD/DVD combo available here for only $13.49! ;)

http://www.amazon.com/Brothers-Feather-Live-at-Roxy/dp/B000TV1SUQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1196529360&sr=8-1

This is a cover called "Driving Wheel"  I thought it sounded like a Gram Parsons song when I first heard it, but it was originally done by someone named David Wiffen.

http://www.savefile.com/files/1235194

There's also a cover of Missourian (I've just learned) Gene Clark's Polly.  The same song that Plant/Krauss covered on their recent compilation.  Both versions are spectacular.

(Oh, and then there's 12 and a half minute acoustic version of a little song you may have heard called Thorn In My Pride.) :o

*** This is not a "One Night Only" performance.

and here is the press release:

For the first time in their 18-year career, THE BLACK CROWES will
perform an album of theirs in its entirety. On a special run of "One
Night Only" shows beginning March 2 and wrapping March 20, fans will
experience "Warpaint" — the group's first album of all new studio
material in seven years, due out March 4 — in its entirety onstage,
after which the band will perform songs from their catalog and selected
surprises.

A listing of these seven one-time-only tour dates is
below, with the on-sale info. In the midst of this trek, the band will
headline Stubbs March 15 at SXSW in Austin.

THE BLACK CROWES
launch their overseas tour March 24 when they headline the East Coast
Blues & Roots Festival in Australia. They'll continue their Down
Under trek — their first since 1991 — through April 5, and conclude
with exclusive performances in London, UK at Brixton Academy April 9
and The Amsterdam Music Hall April 11. A major market multiple night
U.S. tour will begin in May, with cities and venues to be announced in
the near future.

"Warpaint" marks the recording debut of two new
band members — second guitarist Luther Dickerson, formerly of NORTH
MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS, and keyboardist Adam MacDougall — who join Chris
and Rich and drummer Steve Gorman and bassist Sven Pipien. The album —
which is being independently released on the band's own newly-formed
Silver Arrow Records, distributed through Megaforce/Sony Red BMG —
builds compellingly on the band's trademark adventurous brew of rock,
blues, country, soul and gospel.

Produced and mixed by Paul
Stacey at Allaire Studios, Woodstock, NY, the album features 11 songs,
all of which were written by Chris and Rich Robinson, except "God's Got
It" by the Reverend Charlie Jackson. "Goodbye Daughters of the
Revolution" is set as the album's first single and video; the song will
arrive at radio on Monday, January 7.

Own all their albums (Amorica is one of the greatest things I have ever heard to this day).
Own 4 of their official releases and countless SBD boots.

Yeah safe to say they are one of my favorite bands ever.  I'll be all over this new album and all over the Fillmore NY show!

And what can be better than having Luther in the fold?!?!  I can't wait!!!! ;D

From allmusic: http://blog.allmusic.com/2008/2/29/the-black-crowes-warpaint/

Looking back, it seems inevitable that the Black Crowes would suffer a rocky middle age. Young bands yearning to be old tend to stumble when they years start to pile up, once hunger and ambition starts to fade into the ceaseless grind of the road, and the Crowes were no exception. After they mapped out the furthest reaches of their world on 1994's Amorica, they slowly spun their tires, turning out records both respectable and tired, before internal tensions slowly tore the brothers Robinson apart, leading to a split in 2002, not long after the release of their sixth album Lions. A few years of solo wanderings lead the band to a reunion in 2005 but they had to go through a few more lineup changes - including the addition of North Mississippi Allstar Luther Dickinson as the replacement for guitarist Mark Ford — before they buckled down to record their seventh album, 2008's Warpaint. All that turmoil and trouble is felt on Warpaint, as are the years the band spent paying dues on the jam-band circuit after Amorica. Warpaint shows that decade of hard struggle gave the band soul and chops, turning them into the band they've always wanted to be.
The Black Crowes haven't changed their basic sound - ever since Shake Your Moneymaker the band has always drawn deeply from the Stones and Faces, tempering that British swagger with southern-fried blues borrowed from the Allmans, then slowly threading hippie mysticism throughout - but the feel has, as the group has turned from reckless ruffians to seasoned veterans, with all their feeling lived-in and genuine. There's depth here, highlighted by an instrumental suppleness that slightly recalls Little Feat - particularly on the slow-rolling "Oh Josephine" with its gently cascading choruses - an evolution that could only be earned during those years on the road, building the band through nightly jams and a slow cycle of membership turnovers. This is a suppleness that has grit, thanks especially to Dickinson's glass slide runs that give this music some welcome grease. The Crowes also pull off a couple of sly moves here, weaving some swirling psychedelia through the chorus of "Movin' on Down the Line," turning the Rev Charlie Jackson's "God's Got It" into a heavy heavy backwoods stop, then spinning the closing "Oh Mule" into a roiling blues raga that. These are the turns and tricks of veterans, who can slide these flourishes into their signature sound without calling attention to their changeup, but these numbers are enough of a departure to garner attention - what may not get as much praise is how the Crowes write compellingly within their standard sound, as they do so here, beginning with the opening gambit of the down-n-dirty "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution" and the crawling "Walk Believer Walk." From there, Warpaint continues to gain momentum, as this album not only is their strongest set of songs since Amorica, it has a depth and presence that is rare for a digital age creation and, best of all, the album has a true narrative thrust, making it feel like a true classic rock album. What the Black Crowes have done here is what true journeymen do: they don't renounce their past, they build upon it, finding hidden depths within it, shaping tradition after their own image to make it sound fresh. They're old-fashioned, but in the best sense: they're in it for the long haul, which the superb Warpaint proves beyond a shadow of a doubt.

"Locust Street" may be my favorite on the album so far. At first listen, I was kind of not feeling Warpaint until this song, then follow it up with "Movin' on down the Line" and 'Wounded Bird" I was back into loving the Crowes. Hope to listen more today and get a real feel for it.

How about the bass line on track two!   DAMN!  That's some heavy blues!

Gold in them Hills is also an early front runner for me.

from what i've heard, in Japan imports from the US are actually cheaper so they put bonuses to get them to buy the Japanese versions.

Nice, thanks for the heads up.  Unfortunately I don't have HD yet.  However my tv shot craps yesterday so I will soon!  Hopefully they re-run it in the future.  Let me know how it is, would ya?

QuoteHey, db, did you get this yet?   Is there an extra track on the Japanese version?  How come Japan gets all the bonus songs?  Seriously, what's the strategy there?  Anyone?
Don't have it yet but it's on the list.

Japanese CDs have an extra inlay card/sheet. 9 times out of 10 these have a short biography of some kind/recording info + lyrics (even if the original US/UK version doesn't) hence the higher cost & I guess that's why the Japanese format has an extra track or two, to compensate. It's usually just a remix or live version of one of the existing tracks but sometimes you get lucky & strike gold with a couple of exclusive tracks  :)

db, thanks!  I think you will like the new album.  I'm really starting to fall in love with it.

Brian, right after I posted a reply to you last night, I got on charter.net and had them add the HD service.   I wasn't expecting the HD channels to work until I got my new tv but they did so I recorded the Crowes unplugged!  The channel was only SD (shitty definition) but it was excellent.  Daughter's of the Revolution was my least favorite new song, but the unplugged version was spectacular!  They also did Locust Street, Walk Believer Walk, Sting Me, Wiser Time, Soul Singin', and a few others I can't think of right now.  Hopefully this turns up somewhere for the masses eventually.

GREAT to hear a new album coming out soon, I just got a copy of the Japan version of Warpaint with the extra track.  Hope the boys come down and play in NYC again soon, they were fantastic in October!!

Checked ebay and no tickets are for sale for these shows so at least real fans are going!
