I'm on board with this!   I need more Gillian.  I only have Hell Among the Yearlings right now.

I saw her with the Dave Rawlings Machine, which is basically the same act only Dave takes the lead vocal part and Gillian the harmony.  Good, good shit.

"Time (The Revelator)" goes on a desert island list for me. Top 5 all-time as far as I'm concerned.

Two great covers by the Machine:

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Country Girl (Young)

I have a DVD of them playing the Bridge School and Young comes out and sings the last verse of Country Girl.  It's awesome, maybe  should start a youtube account.

amazing amazing amazing duo.  they just take my breath away.

last summer got to see them as david rawlings machine the night before hardly strictly bluegrass. sooo much fun!  d--thanks for the clip!

i do wish they would tour.  i'm fiending for a show.  am quietly hoping for a david rawlings appearance at the old crow show next month here in l.a.  he must be in town mixing a record or something b/c he's been showing up at local venue largo to sit in with jon brion quite a bit lately.

it's been 5 years since soul journey came out.  five!

(full disclosure:  am a complete and utter fangirl for these two.   :D )

I didn't realize that you were such a fan, Yvon.  Would you like a copy of that Bridge School show or do you already have it?

 :D  i don't have it!  i would love a copy!  should we do a b&p?

i was at last week's bridge school.  every year they show a movie featuring performers from over the years.  i gave a cheer at the gillian & david clip.   ;D

i may have a recording of that david rawlings show if you'd like one.  i'll look around...

Don't be silly.  I seem to remember owing you for one badass sticker.  I still haven't gotten it, but when I do I'll grab your address and send you that DVD.  It's a good audience recording and the performance with Neil is just magical.  When I saw DRM Dave talked about that performance and how much it meant to him to play with Neil that day so when I saw it on someone's trade list I snagged it.

Ben Sollee played a great version of "Everything is Free" last night.

Yvon: I got the stickers in the mail yesterday and I'll try to get your package in the mail this week.  Thanks so much!

True that! I am enamored by these 2 fine musicians. I have seen them twice and they blew my mind each time. I can't even believe that Soul Journey was 5 years ago. I haven't seen the Machine though, not sure if they have come to Michigan in that incarnation. If I did miss them, then shame on me!!

aMD, thanks for the 2 covers. I hadn't seen those.

dylan, the show was on my stoop when i got home tonight!  cannot wait to hear it!  thanks so much!

it inspired me to listen to "revival."  man oh man, this record is stunning.  "one more dollar" and "annabelle" are just gorgeous heartbreakers.

Her and Dave used to live around the corner from us in Nashville. We never spoke, but she did give Sparky a big smile when we were walking him by their house 1 day.

I saw her and Dave perform with Ryan Adams at the train wreck he had at the Ryman about 5 years ago. They were all playing Joey by Bob Dylan for an encore (to a half empty sold out show), RA on drums, and he stopped playing in the middle of the song (Dave and Gillian kept it going) and went looking around stage for his wine bottle.

Her and Dave also sat behind us at The Belcourt here when they re-released The Last Waltz.

that's all I got

I would love to see them play with Ryan again now that he is semi normal..they make great music together...I love Heartbreaker.

They are also on the Robyn Hitchcock documentary that recently came out where he plays with them and Peter buck and the actually go play Maxwell's in Hoboken.  Peter played there in like 83' with REM.

i had a bit o' david & gillian luck this week!

last night at the old crow ms. show here in l.a. david played about 5 songs with them, then he and gillian came out and played with the band for the encore!

awe.  some.

tonight david showed up and played with jon brion at largo.    :D

MY DRY SPELL IS OVER!

i credit this thread for getting the mojo going!   [smiley=beer.gif]

now, if they would just put out another record...

dylan--have you heard "throw me a rope?"  it's not on any records, but i have a live version of it.  if it's on my laptop, i'll post a link..

So the Gillian Welch discussion is this:
She is the child of a pair of urban writers...heard a record, went to college and now writes all these down-home bluegrass songs.

does that cheapen the experience for you when you listen, knowing she didn't grow up learning these songs in a rocking chair in an Appalachian holler?

or can you put that aside and just groove with the music?

I think that makes her MORE genuine in a way.  For her to seek out this music that she was barely even exposed to, it must have really touched her and she found her "true calling".   Whereas most people just fall into listening to the same stuff the people around them like, be it Bill Monroe or Brittney Spears.  So it doesn't cheapen the exp for me at all.

Yep, one of my faves. But honestly, the whole album is just sublime.  Been waiting a long long time for this one. Very rare that an album youve built up so much turns out to meet and then exceed your expections.

Theres talk of a January tour here which would be awesome. They last toured here in '04.  Some of the most stunning shows Ive seen. Dave's guitar playing live is jaw dropping in places. And the harmonies... oh boy...  I remember hearing The Way It Will Be (Throw Me A Rope back then) during those shows and thinking how amazing a song it was. Who'd have thought it would take 8 years to make it to record?

Man, I love this album.

I've really enjoyed reading this thread and knowing there are other Gil/Dave fans on here.

I agree that the new album is amazing and everything I hoped it would be.  I've grown to appreciate Soul Journey over the years, but didn't care for it much at first.  It's great to be blown away by a record of theirs again right off the bat.

Can't wait to see them again in August.
