No offense to you faithfuls, but I really, really dislike this guy and his music.  Alright, I'll take my licks now...

Really are not going to get much argument from me. I was never a fan.....I tried to be many times and the Boss just never spoke to me.

i saw him at gmen stadium in july. he came on 2.5 hours late (apparently cause of an accident on the highway). the delay caused me to run out of tailgating beer and thus i was not happy. beer at the stadium was $8 (not his fault). his show was energetic, but every song literally sounds the same. did those songs sound different just now? no. the show went for 3 hours, i had to drive home for 4 hours leaving at 1. the 4 hours did not include stadium traffic. the crowd around us sat the whole time and yawned. it was a completely lame experience. the only highlight was when one of the guitarists did a flip while he played a solo. he did a flip. a fuckign flip. other than that, i was super not happy. i had more fun watching him just now during halftime, with a delish beer in my hand, than i did when i saw him live. i dont know what that means. im still pissed about that pick. and yay, now i get to listen to john madden.

Remember that time I posted about making eye contact with the Boss?  I felt like f*cking Courtney Cox.  Anyways, his first six or eight albums are all excellent.  And 'The Seeger Sessions' is a gem as well.

He doesn't suck and in the words of a man wiser than me: "Fuck all y'all!"  ;)

Fair enough, you may not like him or his music but I don't think anyone can deny his contribution to music.

I like all sorts of funk/soul etc but can't get into Prince & don't like some of the things I've read about his ego. That said, I appreciate his contribution to music & wouldn't dream of starting a "Tell Me Prince Sucks" thread...not unless I wanted to look like an idiot.

Ouch.  Did I just deny the Boss of his contributions to music by my keystrokes?  I just don't dig it.  No need to start in with the idiot talk...

Ghosts, did you get this much heat for your DMB thread?
C'mon...Springsteen Sucks!  :-/

Had you started the thread with something like 'I don't like Springsteen' or 'I can't get into Springsteen' then you would have opened the floor for a valid and possibly interesting debate but Springsteen Sucks? That's just juvenile IMO.

Nevermind, let's try again. Have you heard anything from Nebraska or Ghost Of Tom Joad?

And you need to go back & look at Ghosts' DMB thread again, he was trying to show people that they don't suck.

Yeah I don't have much against the Boss besides his political agenda... But that halftime show sucked... 4 guitars?? Come on Bruce... And was the church group necessary for 30 seconds of singing?? I don't know....

My personal favorite was the opening when he "posed" with his guitar then handed it off without playing a lick.

I am neutral (Switzerland or is that Sweden?) on the subject of The Boss, however, I did not enjoy having to wait 45+ minutes both times I saw him live (different tours) - and both times he did not bother to give us house music through the arena sound system.  Just uncomfortable silence whilst waiting.....

Born in raised in Jersey, I prefer Bruce only in spite of the Jovi since Sinatra is irrelevant and claimed by New York. Sure, we have the Misfits and Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors and Tom Verlaine and Yo La Tengo and NICOLE ATKINS and Silver Jews, but no one cares about that.

I see why people like him, I like a lot of his songs, but I think locally the appreciation is "because he's from Jersey" more than "OMG he makes good music"

So he didn't use his half-time slot to "protest against the bloodshed in the Middle East"?

http://www.imdb.com/news/ns0000002/?date=2009-01-31

Outspoken comedienne Roseanne Barr is urging Bruce Springsteen to use his upcoming appearance at the Super Bowl to protest against the bloodshed in the Middle East. The Jewish actress has publicly condemned Israel's role in the recent attacks on the Palestinian-held Gaza strip.

And Barr wants the rocker to do the same by making a political protest when he performs at the big game, between Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers, on Sunday.

She writes on her website, "The Boss oughta demand during his half-time appearance this Sunday that Obama stop bombing Pakistan . . . and stop funding the Israeli war machine! Tell Obama to . . . make Israel stop bombing Gaza!!!!"

At first I thought this youtube was of this song,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NltljcANCFs&feature=related,

probably my favorite Bruce song ever (the intro to that youtube was this song).  The problem a lot of people have with Bruce, in my opinion, is that they've heard mostly his popular stuff.  I mean some of it is great like Born to Run and Thunder Road, but a lot of people know Bruce for stuff like Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days, and Caddilac Ranch.  If you have listened to The Wild, The Innocent, and the E-Street Shuffle, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, or Nebraska and still dislike him, well then you just dislike him.  But if you haven't listened to these albums then you haven't heard the best of the Boss.

i am torn about the boss. i like a couple early albums but since moving to jersey, i've come to dislike him more BECAUSE it gets forced down your throat. he can do no wrong around here and chode is right, the other jersey acts get ignored. weird.

last night's show was cheesy, sorry but it was. but it's the superbowl, not NYE at MSG, whatta ya want? LOL

Springsteen's music is part of the soundtrack of my life.

KY, who cares? I mean, it's OK if his music doesn't appeal to you; ALL music doesn't appeal to everyone.

Should I roll out my brother in law (again), the jazz pianist, who now has released 10 CDs, who thinks my Morning Jacket sux? Do you want him to write you a letter explaining to you how novice they are with their cord progressions? Do you want me to get him to tell you how small your mind is when it comes to grasping music and how he can play any MMJ song after about 2 listens?

Or, do you want to become enlightened to the fact that not all music speaks to everyone on the same level and perhaps you should just respect other people's tastes and differences?

think about it

Saw Bruce in 84 or 85 at the Meadowlands, then more recently at JazzFest about eight months after Hurricane Katrina.  At the latter, he performed with the Seeger Sessions band and it was amazing.  His acapella version of "When The Saints Go Marching In" had everyone at the Acura Stage in tears.

I'm no more than a casual fan, but I'm pleased he's so heavily rumored for Bonnaroo.  I thought last night's Superbowl performane was a bit cheesy, but hey...it's Superbowl halftime.  You may not care for his music, but to say he sucks is ridiculous.

My phrasing for the title of the thread was merely modeled after a previous thread... It was not meant to inflict pain.  Besides, I do give him points for grinding on his mic stand last night.  But then again, wardrobe malfunction was taken.

I realize that the man has made a huge contribution to music; it's just not my flavor.  No big deal...  I am new to the forum, but surely not everyone out there is always so serious...

BTW, why aren't all of the faithfuls taking advantage of the 'Tell Me Springsteen Rules...' thread?

This is funny, 'cause I was talking to my dad last night, and apparently my dad has a crazy-deep-seated dislike of Bruce because he thought he was a Dylan ripoff when he first came out (my dad's a Dylan fanatic)  ;D  Personally, I don't see the comparison.

I like Bruce awright, saw him a year or two ago, and enjoyed it immensely though I'm not particularly familiar with his catalogue (radio hits and Nebraska aside).  He does put on a hell of a show!  And I don't think it's overstating it to say that Nebraska is a modern masterpiece.

Springsteen always brings back fond memories of hearing Greetings From Asbury Park on my parents' 8-track stereo system.   About 10 years ago, I rediscovered him and ordered all of his albums from Columbia House,  ;D.   The ones I listen to most are Asbury Park, Born to Run, Born in the USA and Nebraska.   I just put on The River because I can't remember the last time I listened to it.

Even if some of his songs are kinda cheesy, you gotta love his energy.  But yeah, that Super Bowl show was pretty silly.  Can't hate him for it though.

I'm originally from Jackson, NJ which is right next to Freehold. Liking Bruce was just natural, everyone's parents or older siblings were into him so you just picked it up. Every time I've seen him it's been a great show, never sitting down for a song. He is one of the few artists I will still go see in a Stadium.  BTR, Greetings and Darkness have always been my favs, with Nebraska and The River.

I just kind of remembered I think I actually saw a Springsteen show around 2000 or so, but totally forgot about it. I remember it being fairly entertaining, but not much else, and I wasnt drunk because I was 16 and with my pops.

I think the energy of shows and NJ/NY fanaticism is a big reason why he's 'the Boss'. That and probably most music in the late 70's/80's mostly sucked. He definitely had that going for him

Talking Heads are honestly the only band whose prime/started from 76-85 I listen to fairly often.

I figured Joy Division would be a given, as would The Police, The Cure, The Smiths, and maybe another band or 2.

Outiside of that, not so sure there was too much good music in that period. And certainly, none of them had a throwback sound like Springsteen.

I also think Fear of Music is. Id probably say '77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food are better too, but that probably gets to favoritism.

Marquee Moon is awesome, but I personally don't think it's better than Remain in Light. That album is just too perfect. ANd to think it came out in 1980!?!

I agree Remain In Light is definitely better than MM.

I also think Fear of Music is. Id probably say '77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food are better too, but that probably gets to favoritism.

Yeah, Fear of Music and RiL are my two favorite heads albums. RiL wins in that situation though. Thats one of my favorite albums ever.

I think the energy of shows and NJ/NY fanaticism is a big reason why he's 'the Boss'. That and probably most music in the late 70's/80's mostly sucked. He definitely had that going for him

heady, I don't know if you've ever heard of The Clash or The Replacements or Husker Du or The Pixies or The Police or REM or Pylon or Flat Duo Jets or Stevie Ray Vaughan or Metallica or Black Flag or X or The Pretenders or New Order or Violent Femes or Camper Van Beethoven or The Cult (to name a few), but I suggest you check them out.

You should stop writing silly little statements like the one above and expand your musical horizons.

Hey Tracy, what are good X and Pretenders albums to get start with?  Man I love that Pylon record ('Gyrate').

I think X would be either Los Angeles or Under the Big Black Sun

Pretenders would be either of the first 2 (even though Learning to Crawl is a classic pop music album, I love)

I own many SRV and Metallica albums, and I own albums from The Police, Clash, and Pixies. The rest I either only like a few songs of, dont like, or just arent my style.

And I listen to enough music to know I dont need to expand the music I listen to since I listen to most anything besides country, classical, and basically the music of that period - punk and new wave. I dont care for it.

Quotei saw him at gmen stadium in july. he came on 2.5 hours late (apparently cause of an accident on the highway). the delay caused me to run out of tailgating beer and thus i was not happy. beer at the stadium was $8 (not his fault). his show was energetic, but every song literally sounds the same. did those songs sound different just now? no. the show went for 3 hours, i had to drive home for 4 hours leaving at 1. the 4 hours did not include stadium traffic. the crowd around us sat the whole time and yawned. it was a completely lame experience. the only highlight was when one of the guitarists did a flip while he played a solo. he did a flip. a fuckign flip. other than that, i was super not happy. i had more fun watching him just now during halftime, with a delish beer in my hand, than i did when i saw him live. i dont know what that means. im still pissed about that pick. and yay, now i get to listen to john madden.

Id guess the guitarist was Nils Lofgran who did the flip.  He's one of the best guitarist i've ever heard. His work with Neil Young was amazing.

I saw Bruce in 97 or 98 when he did a reunion tour with The E Street Band.  He does most of his new stuff when he tours which is understandable but a lot of people were dissapointed and wanted most older stuff.  I was happy either way it was one of my first concerts.

Great music, but I wouldnt pay to see him again.

I'm very disappointed in Bruce making his deal with the Devil: Wal-Mart. I'm glad he feels bad about it now, but he never should have made the deal in the first place. I know the Boss believes he lacked foresight by forgetting the "questionable" workplace practices of Wal-Mart management towards its employees, but Bruce is smart enough to know that this is just the tip of the Wal-mart evil iceberg. I hope he gets out of the deal, and I mean soon.

He just released a slapped together Walmart exclusive greatest hits album.  I hate Walmart and its peers.

Any respect I had for The Boss is totally gone after knowing he prerecorded the super bowl show music. What kind of rock star does this?

He and Ashlee Simpson are 1 in teh same.

I was pissed when I first found that out, but strangely enough, this put things in perspective for me: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148938-e-street-band-didnt-play-live-at-the-super-bowl-omg

He has a point with the setting up in 5 minutes, and Im not a roadie, but since theyre rolling everything out there on a float, cant they take care of all that on the float during the 90 minutes of gameplay preceding halftime?

WalMart is the devil.  WalMart is Bruce's Boss.
