An article in Mojo Magazine indicates that the White Stripes 6th studio album will be called "Icky Thump". Here is an excerpt from the magazine:
"The album will be called Icky Thump, a title drawn from a Lancastrian colloquialism beloved of White's Mancunian wife Karen Elson ("I changed it to "Icky" because that's how it sounds when I say it, and I love the weird imagery it suggests," he explains). White describes the album as "really heavy. There's a couple of one-take numbers in there, people who love our first album will dig those songs. But there's also some of the most complicated stuff we've ever done. Of course, complicated for the White Stripes means three instruments playing at once."
The article goes on to state a couple of song titles, "Turning Into You" and "Icky Thump" - which would be their 1st ever title track.
Let the buzz begin!!!
Can't wait for this one. I've been on such a White Stripes kick the last month or so. They bring the ROCK!
oh that is classic!!!!!!
does this ring bells for anyone else? db??

;D ;D
No idea what that is Ali, do tell! Looks like The Goodies?!!
Jack White sure is a hard working man!
How about you change the subject title of this one BH before we get 7 'new White Stripes album' threads in the coming weeks ;)
I'm certainly intrigued. Loving the album title.

Ah, the ancient art of Ecky Thump!
Woah! Who's that sporting the 6...no wait 8 pack in your new pic Mark?
I'm pretty sure I'd have abs like that if I didn't like the other kind of six-pack so much ;)
i bet half this album will be excellent, and the other half will be terrible, unless it's like GET BEHIND ME SATAN which was all terrible.
:-/
attack me if you wish. i really do like the stripes overall, but i have an extreme love / hate relationships with their songs. either i think they're fucking tops, or just the opposite. i'm not sure if there's any other band / artist out there whose material is so polarising with me??

I can see how then can do that. I have several friends that just hate them, yet love bands that are similiar. I hated Get Behind Me. Probably hated it so much because I loved the first 4 so much. Such a sharp contrast from striped down guitar brillance.
Out of curiosity, examples of songs that you hate and what about them that you hate. just curious
i pretty much dislike all the twee songs. i'll take the rockers any day.

It's Tony Jaa, db. Thai film star who starred in Ong Bak and The Warrior King (both got a wide general release - Ong Bak is well worth a look if you like martial arts films), well known for not using wires or CGI in his stunts. He is unbelievable to watch.
Obviously my own mid section is modelled on Tony's. My stomach is just more well-developed in size terms and less so in muscle terms.
Just in case the relevance police are watching, and to keep the thread on-message, I agree with Ratsprayer. The White Stripes are best when they're flat-out rocking. I fear for any album with such a contrived title...
QuoteI fear for any album with such a contrived title...
Do you think Karen Elson has done a 'Yoko'?
http://www.grg23-alterlaa.ac.at/portrait/kunsthaus/hi_res/Abb-7.jpg (NSFW)
My eyes! That picture should have a public health warning - soooo ginger.
I hope she hasn't done a Yoko on Jack. That would be a real shame. I have to admit, though, that now I've started listening to the Black Keys (thanks to this board) I tend to get my raw guitar/drums fix from them rather than the Stripes nowadays.
I personally find The Keys to be patchier than The Stripes.
Big Come Up was OK, Thickfreakness was excellent, Rubber Factory has a couple of great tracks but the rest is very average IMO, still can't get into Magic Potion.
Granted, Get Behind Me Satan was very patchy but De Stijl, White Blood Cells & Elephant are all excellent.
It's an easy comparison to compare The White Stripes with The Black Keys. I think The Black Keys still remain rooted in the blues whereas Jack and Meg have evolved past Detroit garage rock without abandoning a blues and country folk influence. A better comparison with The Keys are The Soledad Brothers - if comparing drum/guitar blues duos is the essence of this argument. Anyway, none of the above bands invented the stripped-down drum/guitar approach. The old blues guys experimented with that set-up in the 30's and 40's. Check out some of Muddy Waters' Chess stuff for proof (amongst others).
As for Get Behind Me Satan, there's no doubt this album polarized fans. I think it had some decent highs and was at worst, overly ambitious. I think Jack needed to produce an album like Satan since the band at the time was at a crossroads. Most great bands have that one album where things get shuffled creatively. I like the deprecating folk of As Ugly As I Seem, the fun bluegrass of Little Ghost and the spooky blues of Red Rain. But the lead single was by far their weakest as their lead-off singles go - hearing critics describe Blue Orchid as a cross between disco beats and garage rock made my skin crawl, as does the song. However, one of The White Stripes' heaviest songs is on Satan, the Zeppelin-fueled Instinct Blues. That song proved to me once again that the most resonating and powerful type of music The White Stripes produce is heavy blues.
QuoteA better comparison with The Keys are The Soledad Brothers - if comparing drum/guitar blues duos is the essence of this argument.
Any love for the Flat Duo Jets?
A good friend of mine introduced me to them a few years ago.

I have never heard of them. I'll check them out. Any love for The Immortal Lee County Killers? They are punishing, but surprisingly musical.
Heard the name but not the music, I'll check them out.
Look out for Dexter Romweber's (Flat Duo Jets) bluegrass cover of The Seeker:

I forewarn you, the "real" Killers are hardcore blues - meaning, hardcore punk meets delta blues. Punishing is putting it lightly.

"Three weeks. The longest The White Stripes have ever taken on an album. And, after a short-ish wait, three tracks from the band's new set, Icky Thump, were previewed on March 2 in London at a showcase hosted by the band's label, XL.
Held at the Revue Bar in Soho, the tracks provided the centrepiece to a lunchtime music industry gathering designed to highlight XL's forthcoming releases for 2007. Preceded by Dizzee Rascal's impressive new video for Sirens, two tracks by MIA and home video footage of Devandra Banhart working on his new album, a film of Jack and Meg White was shown, featuring the couple recording their sixth album at Nashville's Blackbird Studio.
The walloping title track provided a pounding introduction to an album that marks the band's return to their previous guitar heavy sound, the anthemic You Don't Know What Is Love marked itself out as a patented piece of Jack White pop noir, while the grandiose final track of the three, Conquest, featured a remarkable guitar and trumpet duel."
Oh, interesting.
NEW DIZZEE RASCAL - I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Haha, I happen to like Dizzee Rascal!

& Jack White to play...ELVIS PRESLEY?!! :o >:( ;D ;)

"John C. Reilly is walking pretty hard these days as Dewey Cox in "Walk Hard," a parody based on the "poor boy with musical talent does good then gets into drugs and goes downhill and then redeems himself and does good again" storyline.
We got an email today with some news on casting of the film. Seems Jack White of the White Stripes is making an appearance as Elvis Presley. Will Ferrell and Jack Black are also rumored to have bit parts. Here ya go --
Jack White of the White Stripes has just filmed (or will shortly film) a cameo in Jake Kasdan's music-industry comedy "Walk Hard" starring John C. Reilly. White is playing Elvis Presley.
My source is 100% certain about the White cameo, but he also thought that Reilly's Oscar-night cronies Jack Black and Will Ferrell are also playing bit parts in the movie, probably as real-world musician figures as well.
I don't think this has been reported anywhere yet...
Hey if Kurt Russell can play Elvis, so can Jack White. White and his Stripes counterpart Meg, reunite this summer after a few years hiatus at the Bonnaroo Music and Art Festival."
My favorite part about the White Stripes is that they don't feel pressured by the public. They get a mega-hit with Seven Nation Army, and then they come out and release Get Behind Me Satan. About as thouroughly unexpected as you can get. This album looks to be no different.
I found this but it is short:

Meg White is so smoldering hot, it's unreal. When they played at Headliner's ages ago (2000?), she was selling the merch. I was two feet away from her and she was smoking a cigarette, sitting at the table, and I was mesmerized. Smoking never looked sexier.

:-? What's wrong with it? Bagpipe solo is :D
I love how heavy it is. Would love to see it live.
I've completely changed my tune on this song. After about 10 listens I'm in love. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
Hmm...seems to me that he's going out of his way to make things 'weird & wacky'
I could do without the widdly-bleeby keyboards & the la la la's completely ruin the song for me :-/
Like I said, still early days...
I like the raw heavy instrumentation, yet it seems a little too clean of a production to make those sounds blend well together. Too many "holes" in the sound. I don't know how to explain what I'm saying, but I just think this song would sound sooooo much better live. It kind of reminds me of The Nurse. I didn't love the "odd" sounds at first but after seeing Jack do it all live, I have loved it ever since.
I love love love this single. I never cared for Blue Orchid as a lead single from Satan, but this new song is exciting and balls to the wall rock and roll.
This song kicks ass! I love it. The guitar is just wonderful!!!
Just got my tickets!!! ;D

"Their strangest record yet. Cue Celtic Rock, poetry & bagpipes...this is an uncompromising and, at times, plain awkward album"
I can say that judging from the songs they played at the Nashville show from this new album, it should be awesome. I love the White Stripes but I didn't like the last album, this one is going to be grittier I think. I can't wait!
this album is unbelievable. start to finish, every track is solid. best album of 07 thus far.

:( don't let it ruin The White Stripes for you ... they have always had strange and different types of merch. Their hardcore fans really eat it up and their stuff is highly collectible. I can tell you that this is probably going to be a FANTASTIC album. Don't be put off by something that silly.
Impressions after my first spin:

seems pretty foward-thinking to throw your album on a thumb drive. Christ, i have thousands of cd's sitting around, doing nothing because they're all loaded onto this computer. Sometimes, i truly can't believe that cd's are still around. but then i remember that people like my mom are the ones keeping cd's alive.
by the way, this album has some gaelic influence happening.
They're on Conan tonight.
They were great on Conan! :)
I got my album in the mail last night with a cool picture 45, I'll post a pic of it later. I listened to the CD while making supper and it's pretty awesome. Bone Broke, Catch Hell Blues and Little Cream Soda rocked my socks off.
(my dog doesn't seem to like Meg's cymbal smashing though, he kept barking when that was all you could hear ;D )
I'm so in love with this album already. "You Don't Know What Love Is...", "Rag and Bone", "Catch Hell Blues" and "Effect and Cause" are my favourites after about five spins.
They sure did rock on Conan; that guitar Jack used on "Effect and Cause" was beautiful.
Less than two weeks! 8-)
I'm 'bout to pick this hot little biscuit up! Very much looking forward to hearing it--I plan on buying completely blind with no previews!!!! Saucy!
Well if you don't want to hear it before you get home or back in the car or whatever, put your ear plugs in when you go into the record store. I went into ear xtacy today and they were playing the whole album. I preordered mine through insound to get a free 7 inch picture disc and it arrived last night so I'd already heard it but otherwise that would have been my first listen.
Buying right this very second off of Itunes as I do not have a good record story in my little town, and I do not feel like funkin around at Best Buy or some other mega store. Also, if you buy through Itunes you get a bonus track. (Baby Brother). Going to work out in 1/2 hour and this will be blastin.
[smiley=thumbup.gif] [smiley=thumbup.gif]
I give it two thumbs up. Might be my album of the year. I'm not crazy about the song Icky Thump but the riff is really good. I could do without the la la la la la la's. It did sound a lot better live on conan last night.
It's a great album. Challenging, unpredictable and hard rocking, with enough heavy doses of North Mississippi Delta blues to keep Robert Johnson's ghost happy. l loved the title track the first time I heard it, but other songs on Icky are better, like "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues", "Rag and Bone" and "Bone Broke".
In a recent interview, Jack said that he grew up watching Canadian TV (probably the CBC affiliate in Windsor) knowing he had Canadian roots - his dad would tell him that their family was from Nova Scotia. Jack became fascinated by famous distant Canadian cousins performing on the CBC like Buddy McMaster and his more famous daugher Natalie. He's also said to be related to fiddle wiz Ashley MacIsaac and wants to meet him when the Stripes play Glace Bay, Nova Scotia later this summer - expect a guest jam on "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn". It's every bit a "Down East" tune as it is an Irish dirge. And you know what, Jack does look a bit like Natalie: http://www.nataliemacmaster.com/
The White Stripes Canadian tour is one of the most ambitious tours ever. If you know your geography including population densities and demographics, then you know this is incredible. The Stripes will literally be performing in some northern outposts in Canada's arctic (places no big act would ever play), like Iqaluit in Nunavut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nunavut, and even Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. This ain't like playing Anchorage Alaska. It's far more remote and isolated. The idea to play every Canadian province and territory is amazing.
Listen to it around 50 times and then form an opinion. So far it sounds really good
It's a'ight. Call me nuts, but I swore I heard some early Zeppelin-ish sounds for a second.
QuoteIt's a'ight. Call me nuts, but I swore I heard some early Zeppelin-ish sounds for a second.

I think this is their best album yet! Their previous ones were pretty hit or miss. I listened to this one straight through, and never had to skip a song! Icky Thump, Bone Broke, and Rag & Bone are definite favs. And how adorable is Meg White?? Her beautiful smile on the cover just makes me grin everytime :)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps hearing Led Zeppelin I or II in some of these songs. Little Cream Soda and Catch Hell Blues are my favs, so far.
I've always associated the white stripes with LZ, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I believe Jack gets a little inspiration from Deep Purple too.
QuoteLittle Cream Soda and Catch Hell Blues are my favs, so far.
word.
Amazing album! I love it. I think I have to get all their stuff.
I'm a die hard White Stripes fan but I will say that if you really like the rocking/dirty/garage-y sounding stuff, get the first three albums. They've all been re-released and shouldn't be hard to find. I thought Elephant was just okay and didn't really care much for Get Behind Me Satan save for a few songs. Also, thier B-sides are excellent, I might be able to hook you up with some digital copies if you are unable to find them otherwise.
Oh well, oh well, oh well.
I think their most satisfying three albums are Elephant, De Stijl and Icky Thump. I like all the albums a great deal. I love the first album, but it doesn't make for an easy listen. I think White Blood Cells is a little overrated, but contains the most anthems. Satan is ambitious and was a necessary experiment: I think Instinct Blues is one of their heaviest songs yet.
BTW, is anyone outside of Canada reading the Canadian tour reports from the Canadian press? Amazing stories have already surfaced.
;D ;D ;D
http://www.stereogum.com/archives/video/video-from-the-white-stripes-onenote-show-in-canad.html
The Canadian tour was incredible and the surprise performances - like in a park in the Yukon, on a Winnipeg city bus, in a mill in a hamlet north of London Ontario, in a classroom in Toronto, on a small fising boat floating in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island, in a bowling alley etc... - were unbelievable and extremely clever. Their concert in Toronto was fucking great and the footage from their 10th anniversary show two days ago from Glace Bay (Cape Breton Island), Nova Scotia was amazing. This is one of the most memorable and important tours by a single band to hit Canada in a generation.

I'm not a White Stripes fan, but I've always admired Jack's guitar playing skills.
Cool they played a Soledad tune. I'm kind of on the fence when it comes to the Stripes. I love'em, but Jack kind of pisses me off a bit. I hate that he said he moved to Nashville to make better music. Basically he threw Detroit under the bus. After all the stuff he said, I'm not sure if Detroit would welcome him back.

Jack's embrace of Nashville is a phase more than anything, although I think he's gradually distancing himself from garage rock. I love Detroit rock, but I don't take his past comments to be insulting. He's taking on a Nashville personna, which is fine by me.
To me, The White Stripes are one of the most important and best rock bands to come around in 15 years. 5 great albums and one listenable experimental release (Get Behind Me Satan) is pretty impressive, plus The Raconteurs kick ass and so does Van Lear Rose.
Are they coming out with an album in 09??

I guess we'll find out of Friday, especially if they do a new song. Jack's said that he isn't done with The Stripes.

QuoteQuoteQuoteAre they coming out with an album in 09??
I guess we'll find out of Friday, especially if they do a new song. Jack's said that he isn't done with The Stripes.
I hope they tour again. Getting to see The Raconteurs was great, but I never saw the Stripes and really need to do that.
I've seen The Stripes three times and Raconteurs once. I prefer The White Stripes in concert (and as a band). Their intensity and raw power is tough to beat, plus the setlist is different every night and Jack has 40-50 great songs to choose from.
QuoteJack's embrace of Nashville is a phase more than anything, although I think he's gradually distancing himself from garage rock. I love Detroit rock, but I don't take his past comments to be insulting. He's taking on a Nashville personna, which is fine by me.
Since you put it that way, I'm on the road to acceptance. But some of his comment were little assy.

I don't think he always wants to be taken literally, but if he does, the guy is from a different, better era.

I saw them twice. 1st time was in a tiny venue, they played an incredible but really short set (Jack suddenly put down his guitar & said something like sorry, I've been really sick & walked off) the lights came up & my friend & I stared at each other in complete disbelief.
2nd time I saw them was in a bigger venue. They were good but didn't play with the same intensity...at least we got a full set that time though ;)
I saw the last three White Stripes tours. The best one was the ambitious and amazing Icky Thump cross-Canada tour (the one where they played in every province and territory and did surprise gigs in a city bus, boat, high school etc... ). The show was no-nonesense, ball-to-the-wall blues rock at a sold out 16,000 seat Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. The stage was simply lit, with no props. Just the drums and guitar, a far cry from the elaborate Get Behind Me Satan tour (which was excellent, but bigger).
QuoteSpeaking of Jack White and Nashville, have you seen the new Raconteurs video of "Old Enough" with Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe? It's awesome. Brendon Benson and Ashley sound great together.
