Not sure if anyone on here has been to this Fest but if you are looking for a really well run, fairly inexpensive festival with good music at a really beautiful location you should consider this one. Its a medium sized fest. No show is ever too crowded where you can't get right up front and they never have two bands playing at the same time. MMJ played this a few years ago and i've seen a ton of great acts. Can't wait for this year.
Mountain Jam V
www.mountainjam.com
Our opening story on Wakarusa has put us in a festival state of mind today, so we figured we'd share the latest about another annual event. Mountain Jam will return to Hunter Mountain in upstate New York for a fifth year on May 29-31. Once again Radio Woodstock and Warren Haynes will present the fest, with the line-up announcement set for the week of January 19. To this end, the festival notes, "This year we're going to continue to diversify our lineup; we'll have a little something for everyone! We love introducing hot new artists into the festival scene, and we know you dig it too! We're going to bring in a third stage for the late night crowd in the campgrounds, with scheduled entertainment to keep it going well into the night..." Early bird tickets are set to go on sale Monday, February 2.
I want to do some straight hippie fests this year. Either something like this or 10klf.
Thanks for posting, bold!

You get that at this one but you also get diversity. Warren had Sharon Jones and the Dapkinds, Drive By Truckers, Jackie Greene, Mofro...along with the Mule, Ratdog and some other jammy bands lastd year. Its a great mix.
Oh man. You know I'd be into it if DBT showed up.
they played at like 2pm on sunday last year right before Levon Helm and Ratdog....great day of music. Love DBT.
im probably gonna hit up wakarusa this year its right down the road from me in the beautiful ozark mountains sounds like a good place to let my mind do some wandering

I may just see you there. We are kicking it around.

kick it in the balls man! hopefully we can chill more than our abbreviated meeting at the show
although im hoping some better names will be announced
I'm not really big into the jam scene, music's ok, the scene kind of annoys me, Hunter mountain is beautiful though.

The fest is pretty diverse...not just jambands.

I'm sure it is, and I can handle SOME jambands, but if it's 10,000 hippies wandering around Hunter for a weekend, I'd rather not be there. I'm not trying to put it down, I'm sure it's a good time, but...probably not for me.
The boys set from a few years ago was really good. I rememeber seeing pics and thinking looked like a nice place.

I understand your point but I think its 10,000 music fans. My friends and I are FAR from hippies though and we go. I think any fest you go to you're going to get a little of that element unless its Lollapoluza or something.
mjk73 I've been to a ton of fests and see a lot of music, its one of the best settings to see live music i've ever experienced. Beautiful up on the mountain and really cool enviornment. Low security and great people.
I've been planning on going to this festival for awhile now, has the official lineup for this year been released yet?
i am thinking about this festival, too---it's between this and bonnaroo--i like the thought of a smaller, more scenic festival w/less phish fans (lol).
ghosts-are you going to bonnaroo?

Most likely. Not getting VIP this year though. I'm looking forward to seeing phish actually.
jeez...buncha Phish haters on this board, makes me wanna cry :'(
Whats the big deal with going to a show/festy with a bunch of drug-seeking, fun-loving hippies??
are they really ruining your experience??
it seems a lot better to me than the fratboys and phonetalkers who seem to be at every MMJ show these days, no?

I know there's some Phish fans here. I'm really excited for the Post-Gazette show! This will be my second Phish show.
You see the show at Star Lake in 2003 True??
Ive seen them over 40 times, and that show was def 1 of the top few Ive seen, if not the best

They kind of just annoy me really. Last Bonnaroo, this kid just walks into my friends screen tent and starts trying to sell us shit, he himself was wasted on something...he looked like he was fucked up on heroin actually but who knows. Anyways, two undercover cops come over, take him away (Which sucks, I kind of felt bad for him), then they start questioning us, finally they leave us alone, when one of that kids dirty hippie friends comes over to us and says " We gotta do something, man...we gotta go beat the shit out of those cops...man." ;D OK, dude, lets go fuck up some cops. Get the fuck out of my face, I'm trying to listen to music and chill with my friends and drink. Granted, thats an extreme, and there are some cool hippie folk out there, for the most part they just get on my nerves. Oh, and I'm not a Phish hater at all.
Wasnt directing that at you Ghosts.....moreso pennylane, sassbox, alady, and a few other haters (mostly wimmins too, hmm... ;))
Not sure how you correlate some random hippie at Bonnaroo with a Phish phan though. Maybe he/she was, but if so, Bonnaroo is the last place you wanna make a generalization from what I hear. And def never had anyone come up to me or my friends and ask for help to beat up a cop ;D
From my experience, the most fun pre, during, and post show is a Phish concert. Im only 24, but Ive seen my fair share of a bunch of bands, and talking strictly 1 bands show at wherever, Phish is as good as it gets.
Ive seen a couple better actual concerts than Phish (MMJ Iowa City :P ), but a lot of my best concert experiences are Phish shows
For the most part, you either love em or hate em, but all Im asking is dont generalize Bonnaroo scoundrels with phans who actually would want to see a show

No, I hear ya. I'm not really talking about Phish fans in general. I've been to my fair share of Jam shows and fests (Mostly when I was a little younger). Moreso the lifers that live at shows, sell drugs, veggie burritos, ect. to make it to the next show. THats a hard life and one that I personally would never want, so I guess I commend them for surviving through it, if thats how they want to live. I bought in to it when I first started going to like, Further Fest when I was 15, But it ended up being so phony to me. All the "Peace and Love" was bullshit, people selling fake mushrooms, and begging for money cause "their brother just got busted"...I heard that a million times. People do what they have to to get by when they don't have any money. THen you see the ones with little kids, babies sometimes, touring with some band. Get a fucking life, cuase it's not just yours anymore, like your baby wants to be out in 95 degree weather watching Ratdog every fucking day for 3 months. Or you go to a biscuits show and 3/4 of the crowd is fucked up on meth, to the point where the band themselves had to tell them to cool out. It's fucking annoying. I know I'm ranting, but I'm trying to explain what it is exactly that bothers me about the scene. I'm all for people going to see a band because they dig them, hanging with friends and having a good time, with or without drugs. Do what makes you happy. Just don't ask me for money. ;)
Yeah...'lifers' and their go alongs can be interesting for a minute, but mostly just seem like kids who somehow havent realized they cant follow some band that (since phish broke up) sucks anyway.
I never actually heard people proclaiming peace & love or getting kumbaya going, but its not the 70s anymore. Thats just a shot and a dream.
And if anyones following Ratdog for 3 months, the jokes on them ;D
maybe because all the phish fans i know were trustafarian, birkenstock-wearing psuedo hippies who think phish is the next grateful dead; i am suspect because i don't understand the fascination w/the music. any movement w/no central focus on the music is just a party. (this is MY OPINION). i'm also not saying rich suburb kids from CT can't like a band--but when all the ones i know fit a profile (Unlike deadheads or jacket fans) it makes me suspect-- i like some of phish's music but probably about 10 songs out of 10 albums--(i don't count the live albums) i was bombarded w/them in college and i just don't understand traveling 3 states to see 'fluffhead' performed live? i'm not saying all phish fans are like this--this has been my experience. i realize there are some true fans who love the music and enjoy the shows--just as the deadheads used to--it's just something i don't get but i can appreciate the fact that others do--i also really don't understand the way the earth rotates on its axis but that doesn't make it less true or great--just my opinion
however, i admit that i've never been to a show (and never had a reason to as i'm not drawn to their music) but i will be curious to see them at bonnaroo.
I'm with Penny on this one. Never really cared for their music. My experience with the fans, and it's fairly limited since I could care less for their music, is about the same also. If that's your thing, then hey go for it. Whatever trips your trigger, I'll just go watch what interests me and leave it be.
W-w-w-wait! How'd I get labeled a hater? I'm just not a fan of their music...tried it, not my cup of tea. That said, if they show up at Bonnaroo and I have nothing else going on, I'll give them another shot. Also, ALady is a HUGE Phish fan.
But...as far as your "mostly women" comment, I'll just quote the band that started it all: THAT'S RIGHT, THE WOMEN ARE SMARTER! ;)
:)

I'd also like to add that I'm not a Phish hater, but in answer to your questions-- Yes, they are ruining my experience. The last MMJ show I went to two people passed out within ten feet of me. One vomited about two feet from me, almost splashing me. A fourth came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder and tried to speak but couldn't because he was so messed up (probably acid). He had two friends following him around laughing at his bad trip. Some friends.
I use to love the crowds at MMJ shows. Great vibe. But once the drug crowd started attending in big numbers, they've become much less enjoyable. I'll take the phone talkers anyday over being around a bunch of immature druggies.
And if you don't like hearing this, I hope others start speaking up and let others know that they don't appreciate being around the drugs. I know I've never spoke out much about such things, but, since you asked . . .

-Since they havent played Fluffhead in nearly a decade it seems, I would certainly travel 3 states for one.

You wouldnt have people paying 400-500$$ for tickets to Hampton if it wasnt about the music
....and last I checked, Bonnaroo isnt a guarantee although they did leave those dates conspicuously open when they announced 10 shwos last week

I remember in that Jazzfest thread both of you were saying you were happy Phish and their fans wouldnt be there, so thats how you got grouped in.
I also just found it funny most of the people who Ive seen express their dislike for Phish happened to be the ladies of the board (and MJ saw Twilight and enjoyed it, so maybe he counts too ;))
And I probably agree with you women are smarter, or at least more responsible. However, men can pee standing up and are better drivers ;D

They are playing Bonnaroo. Count on it.
Touche! Yeah, I wouldn't want Phish at JazzFest...the Fairgrounds are really not that large and I'm already concerned about how large of a crowd DMB will bring in this year (I was there the last time they played and it was the one and only day in 20 years that I left early because there were so many people crowding that one stage that it actually felt dangerous).
Insofar as drugs and alcohol...live and let live. But when your living starts infringing on my living, it ain't cool.
And apparently women can also stand while peeing...one did it right next to me at MMJ's Louisville show! :)

In my experience at shows, drunks are the most annoying people. Typically unless I was in a cramped somewhat small indoor venue though, Ive never had a problem with anyone else at any show.
Second, I just posed a lighthearted question. I wasnt condoning drugs or anything, so Im not sure why you jumped on your high horse and call me out like im Timothy Leary passing out doses in dozens to hipsters at MMJ shows. Im not the guy who almost puked on you, sorry.
People even get tore up at Kenny Chesney shows for christ sake. Your points have nothing to do with Phish, their fans, or their shows.

i'll check out their show at bonnaroo--it will probably be a fun show but nothing more. when the music doesn't stand on its own, it loses credibility. i really dug a few songs from farmhouse and billy breathes but i think so many songrwriters blow trey out of the water--it's the same widespread panic--the shows i've been to are awesome, then i put on an album...and i'm like...is there a song in there?? lol...
in any case, maybe bonnaroo will change my mind....doubt it though.
When it comes to lyrics, certainly Trey and Tom Marshall are no Bob Dylan, but they still express a lot more in their music than many bands do with words.
If they play Bonnaroo, I might actually have to make my 1st trip to it to see them. Im sure theyll rock out, have a few people sit in, and play some rare tunes or covers.
And if you like the shows but not the albums, just go for live albums. You can get any show you want through various torrent sites, etc (and obviously could bonnaroo if they play it), but they also have I dont even know how many of those Live Phish official releases
thanks capt, the day i start downloading phish shows will be a desperate time for me as far as music (lol). i have many bad flashbacks to dorm room bouncin round the room sessions. --don't feel bad, it's kind of like me trying to turn people on to the verve or trying to sell the greatness of Wings or Steely Dan..if you don't connect, then you don't connect. i'll check them out at bonnaroo and let you know. you should DEF head down to bonnaroo if you've never been they are playing! nothing like it.
LOL. Hey, Wings was the first album I ever bought! I think I was 12 and my parents took me ice skating and then I was allowed to pick out two albums at the record store. The other one was Captain and Tennille. Gah.

This is true. I used to follow them a bit back in the day, and I've already requested my tickets for the upcoming Alpine Valley shows. :D (If I've expressed any displeasure at seeing them at other fests, it's just because I already have plans to see them and wouldn't mind seeing some other bands this summer, too ;D )
I've studied music all my life, and for what it's worth, I think Phish are tremendously talented. You kind of have to be in order to be able to improvise in a long format as they do. The way that Phish can take a simple melody and deconstruct it, reconstruct it, deconstruct it again in a completely different way, and build to a soaring climax...man, it just doesn't get much better than that. I have a couple Phish boots that
still give me chills, years later, after I've listened to them probably thousands of times.
If you're looking for perfect three-minute pop song structure, you probably won't dig Phish. But that doesn't mean that what they do isn't good.

For anyone who thinks the Dead crowd and Phish crowd are the same don't believe it. I witnessed this first hand when Trey and Mike opened for Phil on a tour a few summers ago. My friend and I sat in the parking lot and just played a game to see if we could pick the people who where there to see Trey and the ones to see Phil. I know this is generalizing but its pretty night and day. I know there are a lot of people who just love the music for both and thats great. I've seen Phish a few times and thought they were ok but the crowd just completely turned me off. Its funny I've read so many great things about the MMJ NYE show and the only negative stuff (like on the jambase review comments) are from Phish fans who have to make sure you know that no band is as great as Phish that in no way could MMJ be like Phish but what they don't realized most of the time is that MMJ are not trying to be like Phish but somehow it always comes back to that comparison.
As far as comparing the Dead and Phish, I wasnt really saying that based on the crowd/scene.
Moreso theyre just the pre-eminent jam band and have been that for the last decade+, and fans of the band travel to see them just like the Dead back in the day.
I understand what youre saying, but I think part of that is also most of the crowd that would call themselves Dead fans more than Phish are a little older, so thats part of the reason why shows might not be as crazy. I like the Dead too, but Id take a Phish show any day of the week over them.
I know what youre saying about the MMJ trashing over at jambase, but last I checked, its not just Phish fans. Its mostly just people who pretty much solely listen to jam bands it seems and since MMJ doesnt have 15 minute jams, they arent deserving to be 1 of the most highly regarded bands over at that site for these stupid reasons.
See, every hardcore Deadhead I know tells me the same thing, that the Phish crowd is totally different from the Dead crowd, but I just don't see it. I never saw the Dead back in the day, but I've seen Ratdog and Phil Lesh recently, and those crowds struck me about the same as the Phish crowds back in the day. Maybe a little older, but aren't we all a little older now?
It'll be interesting to compare the Phish crowds and the Dead crowds this summer. I think there will be a lot of new (and super young) fans at both.
Ha! It's funny how outspoken people get about Phish...from both sides. I love 'em, and am very excited for the tour this summer, though I probably won't make it to a show.
I think we need our own thread...I'll go resurrect one, or start a new one for us!

I honestly think its soooo different. Capt's points about the age might be right but I know a lot of younger Deadheads who just get into the music and thats it. They heard American Beauty and start getting into Jerry and the whole history of the band. With Phish I don't see that as much. I think you will see it this summer that Phish shows become more "the thing to do". You are going to see all those kids that go to disco biscuits and Lotus shows and i'm not putting that down but people really into the Dead rarely care about those bands. Personally I'd take the Dead over Phish any day of the week, and not just for crowd/scene...I just think the music is that much better, lyrics better..its more blues/rock n' roll based with the inprovising mixed in and thats what I love. I got really bored at Phish shows I went to watching Trey play 6 million notes and I'm a trey fan...I love when he plays with Phil's bands.
You make a good point, Bold - the music really is quite different. Phish is a lot more jazzy than the Dead ever were. I guess that's another reason why I don't really understand why people always compare the two.
Maybe just because of the traveling fanbase; if that's the case, no wonder MMJ is starting to draw Phish/Dead comparisons!

Phish also brings the funk a lot more than the Dead these days

I don't think anyone should really compare the two. Phil's bands are amazing and always changing and thats why I love them. I've seen Trey, Mike Gordon, Warren, Jackie Greene, Larry Campbell and a bunch others play with Phil and Phil really takes new appoaches to the songs. I was never into Ratdog that much. I actually liked some of Trey solo bands better than Phish.
QuoteI also just found it funny most of the people who Ive seen express their dislike for Phish happened to be the ladies of the board (and MJ saw Twilight and enjoyed it, so maybe he counts too ;))
This thread has it all, hippies, smoke and drink stuff, hatin on Phish, proof that women are smarter then men, and the above. I love the internets.

Trey's 1st band that he had after what I think was his 1st solo album around 2001 or so was pretty good, but youd be the 1st person Ive heard say they liked Trey Band more than Phish
I saw 1 of Trey's more recent bands in 2005 I think it was, in Columbus. Absolutely terrible. After that show, I swore to never see a Trey show again unless it was with Phish

Actually I know a lot of people who like Trey's solo bands better than Phish. Its just a different thing. I saw his first tour with TAB I think and I thought it was better than any Phish show i've seen but like I said i'm not a big Phish fan...but there are people out there like this..more than you think.

were those pre-sale? i know one person who got a ticket.
Yeah, presale. The general onsale is on the 24th.
Looks like the server crashed. Probably not the best idea to do all the presales at the same time. ::)
I've yet to hear of anyone (except Penny above) that got a tix. the site completely crashed. I think the reg sale is actually 1/23.
Is it? I thought the presale ended on the 23rd, and the regular onsale was on the 24th?
Eeek, I better not mess this one up.
MOUNTAIN JAM! I've been planning on going since I realized I can't afford Bonnaroo this year. Now I'm itchin' to see the lineup.

Franti & Spearhead - his/their new album annoys me
Ray LaMontagne - will bring the ladies
Coheed & Cambria - WTF is this now emo-fest? o-ver-ra-ted
Derek Trucks Band - cool
The Hold Steady - awesome
Richie Havens - neato
Jackie Green - not familiar
Girl Talk - not familiar
Tea Leaf Green - Thank You Stef Scamardo for making me perfectly happy never hearing another song from this band ever again. Why not rename Sirius 17 the Warren Haynes and TLG channel, or really, TLG with occasional songs featuring Warren
Porter Batiste Stolz - expected a lot, somewhat underwhelmed, would still like to see live as opposed to studio
Railroad Earth - awesome awesome awesome too bad we can't get some From Good Homes
Brett Dennen - don't know
Lee Boys - don't know
U-Melt - awesome
The MacPodz - don't know
Sounds like a solid lineup with enough worth checking out. Must see how funds shape up
The Brew
Meh.

Oops...left off Gov't Mule... ;D
I saw Jackie Green for the first time last weekend. Reminded me of a bluesier Bob Dylan. Apparently, he's a youngster (looked 20'ish) who has been playing out with the likes of Phil Lesh. He was on Jam Cruise and some friends thought he was great. I wasn't as impressed, but I was more concerned at that point with finding food. :)
I enjoy Brett Dennen. Saw him at High Sierra 4 or 5 years ago -- great voice, sings feel good songs.
Lee Boys -- if you heard Robert Randolph before he got signed and miss that sound, checkout the Lee Boys. They still do it right!
PBS -- love a lot of what Porter and Stolz do separately outside of this band. Batiste is a distraction. His fans call his drumming "poly-rhythmic", but to my ears what he does is play lots of different rhythms throughout the song -- not different rhythms at the same time.
This lineup doesn't grab me, but there's still a lot of time for them to fill it up with good stuff.
Ehh
To be honest, I think the band I'd wanna see most is Coheed (never seen them). I've never seen Brett Dennen live but his albums make me think he's not a great live performer although his new album has some more upbeat stuff.
Kinda fed up with Franti (I get your message).
Richie Havens = Cool
Never listened to any Railroad Earth - will check out
There should be a few decent addition, but as of now it looks solid for a regional fest. I caught The Lee Boys and PBS last year and they both sounded great. If anyone goes to MJ I suggest checking them out.

If you want to get a good feel for RRE check out Elko, it's an official concert release.
I once sold guitar strings to Todd Scheaffer (singer from RRE). He was going on and on about how he has to fly all the way to CA to do a show with Phil Lesh like it was a chore, and I'm thinking "oh. It really sucks to be you, having to go out to CA to hang out with Phil Lesh. Let me go back to selling you these guitar strings, and then look forward to having to sell them to the next pimple faced asshat trying to play Smoke on the Water in the corner for the next 45 minutes".
Allmans are playing too. I'm there.
QuoteAllmans are playing too. I'm there.
I hope the Allmans tour this summer, they usually come to Pittsburgh. Phish and Allman Brothers this summer would be great. :)

The Allmans coming to Pittsburgh during the summer is like senior citizens buying lottery tickets.....tickets are cheap and easy and when you buy them theyre HOT
Some additions to the line up:
Umphrey's McGee, The Grateful Dead's Bill Kreutzmann featuring Otiel Burbridge and Scott Murawski, Gomez, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and The Gene Ween Band
Sooooo great to see KDTU playing this event!

The timing of this event (and Crawfish Fest in NJ) is not good for me ...actually, it's great for me, stinks for the job. I am hopeful that if I can make it at the last minute someone will have space for me in their cottage. I'm not much of a camper. :-[
