"Imagine that Bruce Springsteen grew up in Minneapolis instead of New Jersey. Imagine he listened to '70s rockers like Thin Lizzy. Imagine he read the drug-fuelled ravings of William S. Burroughs. Instead of The Boss, he would have grown up to be Craig Finn. Instead of The E Street Band, he would have formed The Hold Steady."
They've got two albums under their belt (Almost Killed Me and Seperation Sunday) with Boys and Girls in America due October 3. I heard it tonight, and it is an absolute masterpiece.
So, anyone else a fan?
www.myspace.com/theholdsteady
fuck yeah! one of my current favourite bands. i'm really looking forward to the new one, just found it last night, but i only have 2 songs so far. good to see some other fans, i don't think many around here know them.

what do you think of the new one?
Personally, I'm more in love with this band than I've ever been.
Made me think of The Bottle Rockets & Rocket From The Crypt (maybe that was just the suits?)
Love the tracks on myspace, cheers for the heads up :)
"Hoodrat Friend" has entered my vocabulary on the regular because of separation sunday.
Oh, and is there a such thing as Penetration Park?
I noticed Pitchfork gave "girls and boys" a 9.4.
I want to get the album, but does anyone else have an opinion on it? I don't really trust Pitchfork's judgement these days.
QuoteI want to get the album, but does anyone else have an opinion on it? I don't really trust Pitchfork's judgement these days.
Honestly, I love everything about it, and if you like Almost Killed Me or Seperation Sunday I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.
It's got less of an 'album feel' than SS, most likely because it's not so much of a story record. That being said, it's still the Hold Steady - great riffs, killer piano (much more than the other albums) and extremely clever lyrics.
i think the newest one is their most varied to date, but i'm still not sure what i think of it, and i've given it 4 or 5 listens. i really dig some of the songs, but i don't think the lyrics are as strong as any of craig's other work. this is probably going to be my least favourite hold steady record, but considering they're one of my favourite bands, they're still ahead of most everyone else out there.
i read that penetration park is an actual place, but that's just the name craig has given it.
I just can't wrap my head around whether I like Boys and Girls or Seperation Sunday better. I think I have my mind made up, and then I remember some tiny detail and my opinion is null. Tie goes to the runner I guess, so that makes it SS.
Less than a month until I see them!
FYI you can stream Boys and Girls in America here:

You can download 3 outtakes from Boys and Girls here...http://webvomit.gotdetroit.com/
I'll be sure to let you all know when I find "For Boston."
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO REMEMBER WHERE I HEARD THIS! It's my facorite teachers best friend's band! From Minnesota... YEAH...
Unfortunately, I heard that this is all ficton
i think i'm seeing these guys this weekend. i should listen more before i go to the show. ;)
I've never been this excited for a concert - Monday can't come soon enough.
Boys and Girls is KILLING me right now. I think every song on there is a gem.
I have to go see them live. And I'd HAVE to be drunk.
an EXCELLENT show here in toronto last night. SO fun. holy crap. i haven't seen people that excited since my morning jacket shows.
awesome.
they're one of the best bands around right now.
i had a pretty lukewarm reaction to the new album the first few listens, but now i fucking love it. i still don't think it's as good as SEPARATION SUNDAY, but it's a fanfuckingtastic album, nonetheless.
In less than 12 hours I'll be seeing my favourite band - as of now. I can't bloody wait. Last night of the tour, should be great.

What can I say - I'm a regular Dr. Dre... ;)
NOW, about the show......
Greastest show of my life. I have never had so much fun, nor had so much alcohol poured on me. I've also never seen a band drink so much onstage and play with so much heart. It was everything I could've wished for - a feriocious, drunken mess of rock and roll, with a few ballads thrown in for good measure. Craig's stories are just gravy on the potatoes.
And the encore, well being one of the 50 or so that got pulled onstage after was so much fun. I was about 3 feet from Bobby wailing on his drums that were having beer poured all over them. I was also about an inch away from Craig when he collapsed onto the bass drum, only to get up and walk off stage like he just conquered a country.
What a night.

however, glad you enjoyed it. :)

Yep, I was there, but I'm not from Mass. I'm from Western Canada, but I was just in New York so I decided to make the jaunt to Boston.
As for Craig, it's really a love him or hate him thing. That goes for him onstage as well. I found his little chats really entertaining, but can totally see others wouldn't.
Just a heads up. Not sure if this is a repeat or not but The Hold Steady is performing on Jimmy Kimmel tonight.

Quote
Nice! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. So did they have people crowd the stage during the last song?
They sure did! It was a very involved show... I had looked over some setlists and noticed they didn't switch it up much so I was a little disappointed going into it, boy did that change. It was a very intimate show and the dialog between the band and the audience was very personal. I'd highly recommend that everyone go see them.
Wonderful.
One more question: Did they play 'Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night'? It's my favourite song of theirs and they didn't play it when I seen them.

I'm pretty sure they didn't. I like that song as well and saw they had been playing the song in the encore. That is one part of the show they do seem to switch up though.
Just a heads up to all you vinyl fans and collectors out there. Boys and girls in America is being pressed to vinyl and getting released on the 16th. Limited edition blue and pink vinyl is avialable over at the website and is limited to 400 pressings of each color... I couldn't decide so I bought both, I'll give the pink one to the wife.
Not trying to be a saleman here, just a heads up...
http://www.bluecollardistro.com/theholdsteady/categories.php?cPath=237
This is just about my favorite band at the moment. I've been listening to "Almost Killed Me" and "Boys And Girls In America" almost constantly for about a month now (unfortunately neglecting Separation Sunday).
A show pairing them with MMJ would be a bizarre but beautiful...
Get and listen to Seperation Sunday now... I may be biased but that's the first I listened to and I neglect the other two.
It is such a story album from start to finish, you'll love it!
Ooh only 400 of each color! I snapped up the blue last night, and I just ordered the pink tonight. They will compliment my Milkcrate Mosh 7" wonderfully.
Another heads up: They're on Letterman tonight.
And SS is my favourite. If they can ever top that, I don't even want to know how good they'd be.
Oooo, almost forgot, setting tivo now, so late in the week, I won't ba able to stay up that late...
Thanks!
Yeah baby! Now that's how you throw shit down on national television.

Sirius Left of Center Sessions that I recorded a week or so ago. Good acoustic Chips Ahoy, Cattle and the Creeping things and Hoodrat.

Wonderful news:
"Some Hold Steady movie news! "Girls Like Status" will be on the soundtrack for the upcoming "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" soundtrack. We're doing a Dylan cover for the upcoming Todd Haynes biopic "I'm Not There", with a star-studded cast."
MMJ and THS together on a Dylan tribute...yes please.
Today's a great day for a HS fan:
Here's the brand new video for "Stuck Between Stations". Straightforward performance video with a hilariously brilliant ending.

Wonderful! Now you
must get Seperation Sunday. It's one of my absolute favourite albums of this decade.
Thanks Red, I've just ordered it - I'll let you know how I get on. :)
I also took the opportunity to buy Bobby Bare Jr's The Longest Meow. Never heard him before, so that'll be something else to look forward to, hopefully.
THIS ALBUM IS FREAKING AWSEOME
Im usually not one for huge, all caps statements, but "Boys and Girls in America" waarants it. I dig the whole kinda Bruce Springsteen meets Tom Sawyer/ The E Street Band meets Thin Lizzy vibe. If you havent gotten it yet, give it a listen.

Red, I got an email from earxtacy yesterday that my seperation sunday LP had come in. It's awesome and I haven't even been home to play it yet, it just looks awesome!

Great news Kory! I haven't heard anything in a while.
The boys just did a version of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame". You can download it at www.myspace.com/theholdsteady
Separation Sunday arrived yesterday. Wow. It is very, very good indeed. Thanks for the recommendation, Red.
hallelujah was a hoodrat, and now you finally know that.
This has always been my absolute favourite HS verse, kills me every time:
i saw her at the party pit.
she was shaky but still trying to shake it.
half naked and three quarters wasted. she was completely alone.
i saw him at the riverbank.
he was breaking bread and giving thanks.
with crosses made of pipes and planks.
leaned up against the nitrous tanks.
he said take a hit. hold your breath and i'll dunk your head.
then when you wake up again, you'll be high as hell and born again

Stuck Between Stations just played on Radio 2. I nearly fell off my chair - the Saturday morning show has about 4 million listeners in the UK...

I'm going to put it on now...

The acoustic Live @ Fingerprints EP hasn't left my 5-disc changer since it arrived two weeks ago. So very great.
Saw them on Jools Holland, and they rocked hard. It's a difficult format, too, with however many bands are playing (5-6) arranged in a semicircle in a TV studio. The boys done good.
Just ordered Almost killed Me hope its as good as Boys and Girls...

So I'm ready.

QuoteSo I'm ready.

Me too...these guys
seriously owe you some commission Red ;)
Haha, noted db! Glad ya dig SS Ghosts!
I'd start with either Almost Killed Me or Boys and Girls in America. AKM if you're down with Craig's voice and you're ready to hear him raving like a madman, BaGiA if you need the training wheels before you take The Hold Steady bike for a spin. More singing/less 'speak-singing' on the later.
That being said Separation Sunday is an absolute must, but personally, I wouldn't start with it. Myself, I started from the beginning and here I am preaching their gospel three years later.
GO FORTH AND SPREAD THE SEED! 8-)
Anyone going to see them at the Southgate House tomorrow? I'm extremely excited.
QuoteAnyone going to see them at the Southgate House tomorrow? I'm extremely excited.

Oh shit, you're in for a treat! It's pretty much a pre-requisite to call in sick the day after a HS show.
Don't be suprised if Galen throws out cigarettes, beers or money.
Setlist:
Stuck Between Stations
Same Kooks
Chips Ahoy!
You Can Make Him Like You
Party Pit
Hornets! Hornets!
Massive Nights
Arms and Hearts
Multitude of Casualties
Stevie Nix
Southtown Girls
Your Little Hoodrat Friend
What A Resurrection Really Feels Like
ENCORE
First Night
Killer Parties
I was just completely blown away.
Arms and Hearts AND Resurrection; I'm extremely jealous. Glad you enjoyed it!!!
I just found this sweet video of 'Killer Parties' from the show I was at back in October of last year. Last show of the night, last night of the tour, what a drunken mess. Just perfect.

Rinsing last song. Very nice.
BTW, that crowd was proper drunk!
A FEW NEW DATES
8.4.07 Chicago, IL Lollapalooza
8.5.07 Covington, KY Madison Theater
8.6.07 Toronto, ON Opera House
8.7.07 Montreal, PQ La Sala Rosa
8.9.07 Brooklyn, NY Prospect Park Band Shell
I'm so thinking about hitting up the Toronto and Montreal shows if I can get a cheap flight and a few days off work.
Thanks red. I'm going to go to the Toronto show and so are some of my friends.
I just purchased tickets for the Toronto and Montreal shows. ;D I'm postponing heading abroad until sometime early next year (was going to be September) in exchange for two nights of what's sure to be Hold Steady greatness.

do you go there often?
I've never been. I'll probably end up getting myself lost due to the French factor. I was in Toronto this past winter, but I only spend like 4 hours there.
i was going to say, do you know french? or can you get around on just english? sorry stupid questions
Quotei was going to say, do you know french? or can you get around on just english? sorry stupid questions
I used to know some French, but not nearly enough to get around on (nor do I remember any of it). I was told I'll be able to get around for the most part, so hopefully that's true. I'm sure I'll run into some sit-com worthy moments.
you should have gone to lollapalooza. the hold steady and mmj are going to be there. plus you don't need to learn a second language , and i'm going...hopefully.

Trust me red, Canadians and even you hicks in Saskatchewan ;) are conditioned to at least, be comfortable around French. You'll be able to understand most of the signs and some of the language. Make sure you attempt a few French greetings - people are a lot more receptive if you give French an effort (I found that the case in France too). Also, Montreal is bilingual anyway (at least most of the French are) and half the city is English-first (for you foreigners, that's 1 million plus Anglophones).
I doubt I'll run into you at The Opera House in Toronto, but the venue is pretty decent at times. It's the same venue MMJ played in 2003 - their recording is on archive.org and is one of the band's best sounding bootlegs. I was at that show and it ranks in my Top 10 ever.
This one's probably for only for completists (and db ;) ) - THS mash-up with the three-6 Mafia here:

It's nice to see the very underrated Minneapolis music scene once again produce greatness. It's also nice to see the homage to the Replacements and Husker Du in other interviews. This was the first real "scene" that I was ever conscious of. Husker Du saved my life and they don't get enough love these days.
21 days!!! (new sig!)
The boys have somehow managed to demo 14 songs as of now while on their never-ending travels.
You'll be pleased (ecstatic?!!) to learn that I have Boys & Girls on order Red. Should ship @ the end of this month :)

Lifter Puller? I shall check them out for the name alone! haha
Seeing as it's Red & Rats now you'll both also be pleased to learn that I have The Boxer in the same order, couldn't find that f**ker anywhere in the stores!
lifter puller was craig's/tad's pre-hold steady band. they're more indie in sound compared to the classic rock-springsteen-esque sound of the hold steady. craig's stories are still top notch, though.
Just got back from the Latitude festival at the weekend. THS were one of the highlights without a shadow of a doubt - despite playing at 5.30pm. I was down the front, with my THS t-shirt, singing like a drunken idiot. It was a short set, but unbelievably intense. Uncut magazine summed it up pretty well:
The Hold Steady ended their latest tour with a magnificent set on a hot summer afternoon at the Uncut-sponsored Latitude festival in Suffolk.
After two solid months on the road, Craig Finn and his tireless road warriors proud their high-intensity, euphoric brand of rock'n'roll to Latitude. The tour has included an exclusive show at Uncut's 10th Birthday party, the Glastonbury Festival and, yesterday, GuilFest.
Far from showing signs of fatigue, The Hold Steady were, if anything, more committed and energised than usual. Keyboardist Franz Nicolai raised his striking sartorial standards by wearing a dinner suit.
The Hold Steady played:
1 Stuck Between Stations
2 Chips Ahoy
3 You Can Make Him Like You
4 Massive Nights
5 Party Pit
6 Hot Soft Light
7 Your Little Hoodrat Friend
8 Stevie Nix
9 Southtown Girls/ Killer Parties

Weird.
I'm on a mission to hear "Banging Camp", "Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night" and "How a Resurrection Really Feels" - I'm confident I'll get at least 2 of 3 since I've got 2 chances. I figure a round of drinks at the first show will secure me a request or two for the second. ;D

the Irish seemed wired last night!
have fun, red. i know you will. i'm sadly still waiting for my first hold steady live experience. i missed the southgate house show a few months ago. :'(
Just ordered tickets to see them in London on 30 August. Can't get enough of them at the moment - and can't wait to see them do a full live set. 30 August is a Thursday. Anyone think I should take the Friday off work?
i think the hold steady themselves pretty much recommend concert-goers take off work the next day. ;) ;) ;D
Spot on, Rats. I suppose there's the chance of a drink or two being taken on the night. ;)
BTW - you've got my favourite LFTR PLLR line right there under your avatar.
I've got a week off for 2 shows, not sure if that's going to be enough. :P

In fact, I think it's time to spin it right now...
Ha ha, well if the Hold Steady man says so... :) Will def be buying that asap. I think I scared my friend yesterday telling her about The Hold Steady. I may have been a little over excited 8-) It's just so much fun finding new bands to listen to that are as good as these guys!

Excellent! You won't be disappointed at all. :)
It's my absolute favourite album of the past 5 years, and even after listening to it 7+ times a week for 2 years it still hits me just as hard as it did that first night (ha!).
My friends know better than to get me going on THS, cause I just don't quit (as you can tell from this thread...).
19/20 days until I kneel at their altar once again. ;)
5 august in covington. hmmmm, that's only about 2 1/2 hours from me. i'll set the status to probable, hopeful, etc. ;)
Ear Xtacy here in town has about 3-4 copies of Separation Sunday on vinyl if they're still hard to get.

You can tell when someone loves a band when they describe seeing a show as 'kneeling at their alter' ;)
I went on their website the other day to see if they had any UK dates, and they had literally done their last one the day before! Gutted. Anyway, I'll be ready next time they come here :)
A couple of my friends are travelling at the moment but get back next month, and I think they will love The Hold Steady. So I'm looking forward to forcing them to check them out :)

They're back in the UK and playing in Cardiff on 25/8 and London on 30/8. I'll be at the Camden night. Seetickets still has availability.
Hey thanks MarkW! Just booked a pair of tix for Camden :) Now to convert one of my friends into a Hold Steady fan and make them come... mwa ha ha...
See you there, Caz. It's going to be great.
THS have pretty much become my favorite band these days. ...and The National.

You best be taking the next day off work. ;D
Nice to see you back Ghosts!
That's a sign of a great show indeed ;)

I've only had the pleasure of seeing one HS show (so far, just over 2 weeks till that changes) and it was a drunken disaster of rock and roll and debauchery. I mean that in the absolute best way possible. I've never seen a band consume so much alcohol on stage - when they started to lack in precision, they made that up ten-fold in heart. It was magical.
Long story short, if you're going to drink at a HS show (which you should), you won't be moving to fast the day after. ;D
Hey Meg - Jon Rae & The River are opening (according to The Opera House's site)!!!

You're of a rare breed - a HS fan who's not a borderline alcoholic, I respect that immensely! :D
The band also pulls the weight and drinks enough for all those sober in the crowd. ;D
Now that's what you call dedication to the fans ;) Have just ordered Separation Sunday btw, should be here in a few days... :)

That sounds like the kind've plan I might have to put into action once I get home. 8-) Pretty sure this is the hottest day I can ever remember...
Also, I apologize for my insane amount of Hold Steady related posts as of late, I'm just so so so excited to see them again.
The Bonnaroo recording sounds great.
wow they kicked ass at Bonnaroo, for sure in my top 3 sets.
i've got to see them again!

(sorry folks, just very excited is all...)
Best. Tash. Ever.
Been checking out "Almost Killed Me" and "Seperation Sunday" lately.
The lyrics are solid gold :D
"the 80s almost killed me let's not recall them quite so fondly."
welcome to the club, Chills!
when you get a chance, you should get FIESTAS & FIASCOS by lifter puller. it's my favourite of craig's work.
"we were hoping for an action adventure, or something loud that we could feel through all the feminax"
Have you checked out "Take me out to the ball game" on their myspace page? An essential for Twins fans, I'd think...
Anyone seeing them today with Ted Leo in Cincy?
Played Boys & Girls for the first time today (only heard the odd song here & there up until now). I expected to like it & maybe have it grow on me but I f**king loved it!
Where's Red when you need him?
Probably seeing that band he likes so much, what are they called again? ;)
OH MY!!! ;D
I just don't know where to start, so I'll leave it until tomorrow night when I'm not so exhausted.
So VERY much debauchery ensued, plenty will be omitted for the sake of the guilty (and innocent), but you should all have an enjoyable read.
8-) :)
Also, for those who thought I mentioned these 5 men a lot before last night...you're not going to be happy. I'm going to say 95% of my posts for a few weeks will be related to the last two nights directly. You've been warned. :)
welcome back man!! oh, i'm ready to hear the stories of the adventures. 8-)

Franz looks as fresh as a daisy. Really looking forward to hearing all about it K.
Just heard a great live version of You Can Make Him Like You on Sirius Left Of Center (if you don't have the sat radio you're cheating yourself). Not sure when it was recorded and can't seem to find it out there, but it was on the Left of Sessions show where cool acts come in and do a few songs live - so there are more out there. I do know that they are replaying some of the show on 8/29 at 9 p.m. and 9/1 at 11 a.m. along with Teegan and Sara (?) and selections from The National's session.
Live National and Hold Steady in the same place, at the same time. I love the shiny things floating in space beeming joy to the universe.

holy fuck.
my guess is that hanging with the hs in the wee hours of the a.m. in montreal means serious partay. rock!
NEVER did I imagine such an amazing 2 nights in my life coming at the hands of the kindness, sincerity and generosity of even my absolute favourite band. The two nights I just experienced many miles from home will have a profound effect on me for years to come I'm sure......
Toronto was a really great show, lots of energy, nice sized crowd. To me the sound wasn't very good (as I was warned), but I had an absolute blast. My favourite song ("Banging Camp") was played as well as 3 non-album tracks which was a very nice treat. I'll post up the exact set list when I clean out my bags and find the one the nice stage-hand gave me. Also met with a very nice woman and her boyfriend from THS' board, ending up catching a ride to Montreal with her. (I really do spend time not on the internet, I swear!)
The time after the Toronto show was spend at a bar with three members of The Hold Steady and three of The Constantines in attendance. For those keeping track at home, that's a sizable portion from two of my three favourite bands under the same roof as me. Numerous conversations were exchanged with them all. Met some wonderful people from Toronto, and other places too. That night should have somewhat prepared me for what was to come in Montreal, but I don't think I could've ever fathomed the kindness of the band (one member in particular).
Three or so months ago I exchanged emails back and forth with Tad (guitarist) about going about getting a going-away present for someone special to me. They were busy on tour and that kinda fizzled out. Before the show (as 36 Chambers was blasting from the loudspeakers!!!) Tad tapped me on the back and handed me their days tour-itinerary signed and personalized for her as well as all his laminates from the past month or so on the road. T-shirts, the set list and a drumstick were later acquired. "Don't loose that shit" he told me as he asked me what other songs I wanted to hear as he was making up the set list for the night. Never has anything so simple as a piece of paper or laminated passes meant so much. The absolute kindness that that man displayed I cannot measure for all I'm worth, although he seemed very taken back that I brought him a DVD (Fubar).
AND THE SHOW!!! Wow, they were truly on fire. Myself and the rest of the first one or two rows (nearly all out of towners) were absolutely crazy and kept the nodding French-hipsters at bay. "Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night" was played as Tad promised and two songs into the encore Tad said something into the mic then looked at me in the front row and we proceeded to high-five just before he struck the delicious opening riff to "How A Resurrection Really Feels" (the last of the three I dreamed of hearing). "Killer Parties" was, as usual, the perfect finale. The often ad-libbed lyrics of "...and we...are The Hold Steady" closing out the best concert experience of my life.
To tie it up quickly, ending up spending some face-time, high fives and hugs with Galen, Bobby, Tad and Franz at a local bar until the wee hours after the show. Finally got to ask Franz if the harmonica intro to "Girls Like Status" was a homage to "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkin Head" and he was very impressed, said only a few have caught that.
The absolute joy that was exchanged at those two shows (and beyond) between the band and myself was pure unmeasurable, and I don't know if I'll ever experience something like that again. I was thanked for loving a band so much to fly and see them, but that felt wrong...it was the other way around; I had to thank them for making such a trip so much more than worth it.
:)
I'm sorry for the very long-winded nature of this post, believe me I left out a ton, and am still trying to wrap my head around what happened. Now you can expect even more HS gushing from me...
i really need to get my hands on some of their stuff...
did i tell you that my most favorite teacher went to high school with whoever the head singer is? they went out for dinner when they came to boston and was telling me all about it.
pretty cool
So pleased for you Red! Not only an excellent band but f**king great people too by the sound of things.
Thanks for posting :)

hooray! glad you could meet your heroes, red! :)
people are nice.
Your story gave me chills red! What a treat for you! Thanks for sharing.
Nice one Red! Sounds like you had a beyond-your-wildest-dreams type experience there!
I got Separation Sunday and have listened to it LOADS :) Absolutely love it. I didn't realise it was a kind of concept album when I got it... But my slow mind gradually worked it out. I went from "this is a great bunch of songs", to "ya know, I thinkidink a lot of these songs are about the same people", to "right, well I'm slow. Clearly it's a concept album". Duh :)
Anyways, love it. Got a long train journey tomo so I went and picked up Almost Killed Me today and stuck it on my mp3 player ready to rock my way up from Cambridge to Edinburgh tomo!
Enjoy your memories from the shows! :)
Good for you Red!!! Enjoyed reading that. :)
Time to get Seperation Sunday.

During "Hoodrat" you can witness Galen fill a crowd members cup full of Jamieson's. That was the girl I caught a ride with. I was right beside her, you can definitely see my hands many times haha.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before (a lot of posts to go back & read) but Craig writes a regular half page article in UK's UNCUT magazine. This month he talks about their UK festival experiences & what he has learned about cricket.
There's a rumour that The Boss is playing MN on November 2nd. If that's a for sure, guess who might be catching a plane to see THS on the 1st and hoping a bus back home on the 3rd...

Dude, if that Boss date is a go, this is seriously happening. I can get a very reasonable flight and a long bus ride back home would be more than okay since it'll be the weekend.

My tickets for next Thursday's show in London arrived yesterday.
Good news: I'm seeing THS in less than a week.
Bad news: I forgot to book Friday off work, and someone's scheduled a meeting for me that I can't now get out of.
Tripps, don't count me out JUST yet!!! That Boss date is a definite. I'll let you know by the weeks end.

Monday 22 October: D-9.
I suggest limbering up with a few cold ones: Coors Light will do nicely. After three cans, switch to a darker beer (this will keep your liver on its toes). Ideally, you should try a fine Belgian such as Leffe.
Finally, I recommend a Jameson nightcap - nothing stupid, just a wee dram. It will help you to channel the HS vibe...
Your soundtrack for the night should be a combination of Cattle and the Creeping Things together with The River. Light and dark. Light and dark.
Next instalment tomorrow.

That link was taken down for some reason, but it's up again here:

This looks SO good! Is there a release date K?
They are playing 2 other new songs called Joke about Jamacia and Lord, I'm discouraged. I think there are youtube videos of them from somewhere.
I bought the Lollapalooza 2006 show from Itunes yesterday with a giftcard that I got for Xmas. I can't wait to get a minute to sit down and listen to all of it.
Woot!
There was a Hold Steady reference on Sportscenter (of all places) last night. John Buchigras (I'm sure I just butchered his name) is the responsible anchor. I was nodding off so I missed the whole thing, but he said something like "Basketball player A is to Basketball team A as Craig Finn is to the Hold Steady." You know the Hold Steady?" to which Scott Van Pelt replied, "I know the Hold Steady." Now that's famous.

He did that with the Jacket last year around tournament time. I think it was Kevin Pittsnogle is to West Viriginia what Jim James is to My Morning Jacket. Dude's obviously got some taste in music.

Maybe he'll start taking requests. Here's mine: James Gist is to Maryland what Greg Dulli is to the Afghan Whigs and the Twilight Singers after Maryland knocks off Dook tonight.

yeah i've heard him do one with Win Butler of Arcade Fire once, totally caught me off guard. i can picture so many sports fans having no clue what he's talking about.

Psyched is an understatement.
Holy fuckin' shit!!!!! Patterson AND Mascis are on it. I may shit myself.
You know what this means? DBT and THS MUST DO SOME FUCKING SHOWS TOGETHER THIS YEAR! PLEASE! (in the Southeast!)
This is just unfair: http://www.uncut.co.uk/blog/index.php?blog=6&title=the_hold_steady_stay_positive&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
Sounds great K. Just what I need. Two great albums to wait for! ;D ;)

HORNS!!!
Yeah, I like it. Lots.
What a great track! I've said it before & I'll say it again, what an amazing year for new music!!!
Is it fucking July yet?
I *MUST* see these guys this year.
I agree Corey. I hope they come to St Louis. That will help make up for no Jacket.
What a great song!

2. Yes, you're right, they are wrong.
Unified scene, man. ;)
The whole album is up on MySpace: www.myspace.com/theholdsteady
I was trying to hold off on listening to the leak, but I'm totally going to cave in tonight and stream this baby.

I think you'll be happy with it. I know I am.
Just finished my second time through. It's a definite keeper. I'm pretty sure I like it better than BaGia, but it's got nothing on SS or AKM, not that much really does.
It's like trying to rate the Jacket albums. I just really can't as they are all really reall damn good.
This is amazing! One for the Cutters is quite masterpieceful...yes.
QuoteThis is amazing! One for the Cutters is quite masterpieceful...yes.

I'm on Lord, I'm discouraged, and I think it's fantastic so far.
That solo on "Lord, I'm Discouraged" = :D :D :D
"Magazines" and "Slapped Actress" are my two favourites so far. Love the harpsichord on "One for the Cutters" and the talk box on "Joke About Jamaica".
I really love this album.
Hey everyone. Just a heads up for those of you who don't know. This album is supposed to be available on iTunes on Tuesday. Yep. This Tuesday, June 17th.

I'm very excited for this, I've got a copy of the demos and they're excellent. A nice little departure from tickling the ivory in THS.

Seeing them on their re-arranged date on Wednesday 19 December in London. I promise to have a drink (or two) on your behalf, K.
I'm sure you're already on it, but Franz has a website with his solo stuff thereon:

Hey DB, will you be in the UK that early? Couldn't remember the exact dates? That would be a show for you. Maybe run into Mark in the loo again?

My brother was at that show. He confirms good times.
Aw, cool. Closing with Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love" is never a bad idea! ;)

Wow. You have now fully confirmed that I am loser for not telling my wife to keep quiet while I drove 12 hours north to attend this show with my bro.
I listened to them for the first time last week. For one reason or another, I hadn't paid attention to all the talk on here, but I read a review that I really liked so I downloaded Stay Positive. That was the only thing I listened to the entire day. I bet I listened to it a dozen times. I feel like I've been missing out.

Thanks for that. I generally feel that the saxaphone has as much to do with good music as the flute (explains my aversion to Bruce and Jethro Tull) - but this somehow works for me. Have they ever done a bad song?
QuoteHave they ever done a bad song?
Their sorta cover of the Minutemen's "History Lesson Part 2" is honest, but doesn't do anything for me. Oh, and I still loathe "Same Kooks". Other than that, I'd say no.
Yeah True, I can't wait for that package. Especially the DVD -- really hoping it's for the documentary that had a trailer online over a year ago (it vanished in days).
I'm more pumped for the documentary than anything. I saw that trailer a couple of times before it got pulled from Youtube.

Why the long face? DMB shows are awesome.
I just wish they were opening for them at the scranton show, which is all the way in fucking September. But in a way a september show up on the mountain will be pretty cool. I know no one cares. I do though.
I hope I don't meet anymore douchebags at the next show..

What shows? I'll gladly brave another night of people I don't like at the Ford Ampitheater (and a night at the Seminole Casino next door) for a little HS.
I was looking at the HS web site and I didn't any Dave Matthews supporting dates - the Counting Crows ones were there. The DMB list someone else opening on August here. Help me please.
THey are opening for 6 or so shows in the northeast starting at spac and ending in Burgettstown in early June.

A hold steady show at a dry venue should be interesting. Not saying they won't kick ass, but that is just strange.

Thanks. I just figured out how to put Dave Matthews Band and Hold Steady into Google and I got the dates. I'm very stupid.
I do think it will be interesting - Dave plays big houses. I'm not sure that his crowd will quite get Lord, I'm Discouraged. "Why's the creepy weirdo with glasses so sad?"
Dry Venue??????? Wow. I guess I could drink hard enough for my buzz to last an hour and then leave when Dave comes on. Or take a handfull of drugs.
I saw Dave last summer in Tampa and didn't hate it. Realy cool lightening storm during the show and did I mention the casino?

No, the dry venue is just for a Hold Steady show, not one of the DMB shows.
I think at the end of lost they turn the wheel again and end up in a parallel universe and Hurly takes everyone to a dry hold steady show. (He has mentioned them on the show before). ;)

I know, I need to find a good bar close by and drink a lot before the show.
Opening bands rarely fair well, no matter who they are paired with. If THS can convert a few aging frat-boys and hammered underage girls over to their side, then all the power to them.
QuoteAlso, you should stay for DMB, they might impress you.
I'm not the Dave hater that many people are around here. I did see him last year at my wife's urging and I had a really good time. I thought they put on a good show and that dude can hit a drum with the best of 'em. The crowd was not my favorite part - all the guys I used to fight with and all of the girls who used to ignore me in high school were there acting like I used to act in high school.
And there was an awsome, only-in-Florida thunder storm that delayed the show for over an hour and continued through the show - it was truly spectacular. I had the feeling that Dave wanted no part of the weather and most of his legions seemed let-down by the show. We then gambled at the casino for the rest of the night - always a plus.

I am. I've been enjoying RAGS whilst waiting for Teeth Dreams. I'll be catching them in the UK during May; it's been too long since I was at a THS gig.
My 10" vinyl of RAGS arrived yesterday, some ten months after the download became available. Apparently there were delays in production!
I cant wait to hear this whole album. Faith in the Future was one of my favorites from a year or two back.
He should've played that when I saw him in Chicago a few months back! Wonder how that song would translate in a live setting...
