a friend of mine gave me 30 free songs on E-Music (I scored a Stars of the Lid album!) and I want to download another album and I want it to be of an artist I do not have and something released after 2005. Some of the ones I am batting around are, Umphrey's Magee, the Constaintines, the Decemberists, the Hold Steady (to name a few).
So, the challenge is for you to convince me what album I need to download and why. I'll give you till Friday evening (March 6) at midnight-CST. The winner gets nothing other than the satisfaction of having turned someone on to some great music. Good luck...
Well, I've heard Umphrey's Magee and The Hold Steady and I don't like either. Knowing you, I'm not convinced you'd like the Decemberists, even though I love them. Here are my favorite albums ever (not counting MMJ or The Ds). If you don't have any of these, let me know which and I'll try to figure out the best of them.
Abattoir Blues by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Hail to the Thief by Radiohead
Benefit by Jethro Tull
In a Priest Driven Ambulance by The Flaming Lips
Lola Vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround by The Kinks
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One by Yo La Tengo
If I Should Fall From Grace With God by The Pogues
Vauxhall and I by Morrissey
Urban Hymns by The Verve
If you don't have any of those, they're all essential in my opinion.

thanks for the quick response xmas, you get the spirit award. I have most of the artists you mentioned and what I will stress in my initial post is something new, post 2005.
thanks!
Sorry, I didn't notice that part, despite you putting it in bold. I was too excited. I just like to tell everybody I can about those albums, along with Z and Her Majesty by The Decemberists.
Year of the Crow by State Radio is a really great album released in '07. They're very liberal though, so I don't know how you feel about that. I highly recommend it. It's very diverse and well written. Though their new album coming this fall is going to destroy YotC. It's going to be absurdly awesome.
I'd go with The Hold Steady over the rest (by a landslide - not including some of xmas' suggestions). Great guitar band with nods to The Boss, Elvis Costello and The Kinks.
I'm not a fan of Umphrey's - they are a 2nd or 3rd tier jam band.
And I think you may already know what I think of The Decemberists.

1. Kudos to you for mentioning the VERVE
2. However Urban Hymns came out in 1997 BUT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT< IT IS THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME
3. if #2 applies to you, Tracy. SHAME on you for not having that album. :-)

Listen, I know you want post-2005, but can you settle for this album from 2004?

Here are important songs:

If you insist on post-05, then get the Bee's 3rd release, Octopus. It's just not the ultimate summer album like Free the Bees.
If you want Umphreys, Safety in Numbers is probably best to get a feel for the band. Mantis is an awesome album, but it's somewhat of a different feel.
I think the Hold Steady's Boys in Girls of America is one of the top 10 albums of this decade. It's the album that convinced me to like them after not liking their two prior releases.
However, now that I like them, I like their first album the most out of all of them. Really Raw, damn energetic, and Most People are DJs is a great drinking song.
Tracy, my vote is for "Boys and Girls in America" by the Hold Steady.
Why? Because I can see you jumping around in your living room waving your shirt in circles above your head after the first time that you give it a spin.

Since you're trying to kick Caffeine, I would recommend the band Boris and their album Pink.
No coffee? No Problem. This crazy ass japanese stoner metal will get you going in the morning. Guaranteed.

Tracy - you'll love the Hold Steady and you can't go wrong with either Boys and Girls or Stay Positive. See here:

There's always the greatest post 2005 work of music ever: Powder Burns by the Twilight Singers (Greg Dulli). You may relate to the themes:

Listen to Most People are DJs
USSSSSSSSSSS Sexuality
go for umphrey's safety in numbers. it's a bit more chill than some of their other stuff, and it's a road-trip favorite of mine.
added bonus: huey lewis (sans the news) on harmonica.

I just remembered they came out with an album a month ago or so, do you have it??
Based on the clips I just listened to, it sounds awesome :o
this is the last track on it and its rocking my face

James McMurtry's Just Us Kids. Good ole American rock n' roll with some country mixed in with a liberal bent. Little Steve Earle, Tom Petty, Lou Reed and Bruce mixed in.
What a discography but I dig the new album a lot

Wow, how did you ever discern that I meant Umphrey's McGee when I merely wrote Umphrey's Magee?
You must be psychic or really, really, really, REALLY smart!

I couldn't get into them either, but my uncle told me to get Boys and Girls in America and it's really good! I like Stay Positive now too after listening to Boys and Girls. Check it out!

QuoteThe Whigs- Mission Control.....college kids just flat out tearing it up
Both their albums are worth it if you ask me. And they make for great spring time thaw-out music
Hey Tracy...
I'd agree with all the other folks recommending The Hold Steady's last two albums. I'd also highly recommend the last two albums by TV On The Radio (Return To Cookie Mountain, Dead Science), and the newest ones by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Dig!! Lazarus Dig!!!) and Alejandro Escovedo (Real Animal). I'm pretty sure these were all released after 2005.
I encourage any fan of My Morning Jacket to (if they haven't already) get into Alejandro Escovedo. I feel the same way about his music that I do about MMJ's - I depend on it and appreciate it like an old friend. It's personal, and lovely, and rockin'...he's the man.

thanks. I caught him a couple of years ago on ACL and I loved it but I did not know who it was, and I totally forgot about him until you mentioned him.
would you reccomend A Man Under the Influence or The Boxing Mirror ?

The Whigs give you everything they've got all the time and it's always good. I've yet to meet anyone who didn't love Mission Control. THat's my vote

Hmmm, that is a tough one - they're both wonderful. The Boxing Mirror is probably (at least by the critics) viewed as a more 'important' album...he made it after a few years of life threatening illness. My personal preference between the two, on most days, would be A Man Under the Influence...worth it just for two beautiful songs in the middle of the album, Don't Need You and Follow You Down. I started listening to him around the release of this album, so it probaly impresses me a little more because of that. Gravity and Thirteen Years are also both outstanding albums of his...and I'm sure his others are great, but I haven't heard 'em all...
But you'd be really happy with either of the two you mentioned. :)

yes, I have it, you are correct, it is awesome
I have listened to Alligator like 2 or 3 times since I got it, I just didn't get really hooked on it yet. I enjoy Boxer quite a lot though. Any recommendations on songs from Alligator?

I love every song on the album. My favorites are Karen, Secret Meeting, Baby, We'll Be Fine, Mr. November.
I agree with Tracy they kick serious ass live. I love the version of Baby, We'll be Fine. It blows me away when they get to the chorus.

Decision time (early) >
1st choice was Alejandro Escovedo, but it's not on e-music
2nd was "Boys and Girls in America" by the Hold Steady, but it's not on e-music (they do have Stay Positive)
So, I got Powder Burns by the Twilight Singers (I actually got it on Wednesday, but didn't want to say. Thanks Soup for being in touch with it, and thanks Brian for confirming my choice last night). I really love it, too. It's got a Bob Mould (Sugar era) heaviness and even some Elvis Costello on the vocal delivery and some other stuff I can't put my finer on, his own, I guess. I usually don't go for such a "serious tone" these days, but its working for me. Plus, my wife is digging it too, which is a plus.
thank you all, this may be the most imprtant decision I have ever made in my life (well, at least this week).

if you want em.
no thanks, I'd feel better paying for his proper releases.

Agreed 100%
I was disappointed in Boxer because, well, it's not Alligator. It has since grown on me. Have you heard the song they have on "Dark was the night?" It's a little more upbeat then their latest stuff (boxer, the Virgina EP).
They are coming to Philly soon, I have to get my tix.

Ahhhh, great choice. Every few years, Greg Dulli just explodes with greatness. It's just inspired writing considering the circumstances and the Hurricane Katrina songs are so much better than anything else that sorry event inspired.
It has been largely regarded as his farewell to demons album - I've always thought it was more of a love letter. Bonnie Brae is supposed to be about Mark Lannegan.
If you want to go deeper into Dulli land, make sure you have Gentlemen and 1965 from the Afghan Whigs and Blackberry Belle from the Twilight Singers. I love them all.

Thanks soup, here you go, one of my favorite Steve Blake moments:

Those Duke/Maryland games from that era are as good as any college ball ever played. Duke won it all in 2001 after a historic collapse by Maryland in the Final 4 and we took it the next year. Seems long ago.
Thanks for that.
