Thanks so much!!! I've never seen that performance before and it just blew me away (even though the song has had nearly all of its pulp sucked out of it). My favourite SNL performance is probably Elvis Costello. When he switched up songs and brought it. I've heard great stuff about Captain Beefheart's appearance, but I've not seen it.

EC's moment was great wasn't it.

Didn't the beastie boys do that too, start playing a song and go into Radio Radio, like EC did?

Yep, that was for a 25th anniversary SNL something or other. Costello actually joined them.

I was looking on You tube for the Stones from 77 or 78 and the Kinks from the early 80's. Both are great, Mick and the boys are pretty wasted by the time they play the second song and the Davies brothers give each other dirty looks the whole performance. They pop up on You tube from time to time.
That was excellent - love the T-shirt! ;)
My favourite SNL clip is Stevie Ray Vaughan playing Change It.
You know, if I could do one solo and stomp around like Neil I'd die satisfied.
I can't find the footage on youtube (it used to be there, but it seems to be gone), but the best performance I've ever seen on SNL was Patti Smith doing "Gloria" back in 1976. Horses was a new album then and this young and angry Patti tore the fucking roof off the house. Here's a picture from the show:

I just edited in the video for i am the slime but i couldn't find peaches en regalia anywhere. great performance with jean luc ponty on electric fiddle. They also played another piece where Frank conducted the SNL band (the Blues Brothers for the most part) and Belushi came out as the samari and did an improv scat. You can find that one on the web.
I've been collecting the seasons of SNL and the musical performances definitely make it worth it.

I had a little chuckle when I read the part about Jean Luc Ponty playing "electric fiddle".

I have a little chuckle every time the camera cuts to him in all white polyester clothes with a demin vest and a straw hat holding a transparent electric violin. Dude can play though, so I quickly forget about that.
in 85 or 86, The Replacements played and they were obviously hammered (Bob Stinson is laughing the entire song) and Paul Westerberg dropped the F bomb. It pops up on youTube from time to time.
I saw Neil play this song a few years back during the Greendale tour and it was slow and HEAVY. I'll never forget the tone of that guitar.

Thanks Tracy, I had no idea they ever played SNL. Here it is: http://beta.dailymotion.com/user/mmr421/video/x6yi30_what-a-mess_music
I would have loved to have seen a 'Mats gig. From what I gather they were either drunken messes or incredible. Or both.
