Brian Eno talks about how he came to make Ambient 1 (Music for Airports)

What an amazing and inspirational person.
i love all of eno's stuff (actually i'd say i much prefer the "rock" albums he did), but MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS is by far my least favourite. i wouldn't say i dislike it, but i like all his other material much better. it will, however, always hold a special place in my heart because it's what my wife and i listened while she was in labor with our son.
I hold Ambient music for Airports in high regard for a couple of reasons. First is that I use Track 1 when leading groups in meditation or guided imagery. Second, Track 4 made me think (when I firt heard it 5 or 6 years ago) of hurtling through space at a million miles an hour, just me, probably dead, and to recently hear Eno explain that he made these songs in reference and acknowledgment of the possibility of dying and being suspended in space means he reached that place in me that he was hoping to.
Funnily enough a good friend lent me a big pile of Eno CDs just a couple of days ago:
Drawn From Life, Music For Films III, Apollo Atmosphere & Soundtracks, My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, Another Green World, Music For Airports & On Land.
With which should i start? Any of those i should avoid?

I'd go with the last 3 in that order. On Land is sort of scary :o
I shall give them a spin, thanks :)
(not) surprisingly, On Land is my favourite of the ambient albums.
my overall favourite is TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY)

good Lord! There are times in my life when there is nothing I need to hear more.
in other eno likings, the robert fripp solo on 'Baby's on Fire' is one of my favourite things ever. maybe even fripp's best solo ever.

been listening to ON LAND
a lot lately (per your suggestion) and it's slowly drawing me into the place where it's all I want to hear; he hits something something really deep and unconscious.
thanks
Alright folks, I've decided it's time for me to discover Mr. Eno. What's a good ambient, and non-ambient album to start with?

good man, red! you'll never be the same. non-ambient wise, you can't go wrong with any of them. the four albums (HERE COME THE WARM JETS, TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN (BY STRATEGY), ANOTHER GREEN WORLD, BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE) are probably 4 of the most rock solid albums ever released by any artist. period. like i said before, my personal favourite is TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN. his ambient stuff is often more acclaimed than the other, so take your pick. he's seriously in a top tier league in history with mozart, beethoven, etc. you can't go wrong with any of his stuff.
Ambient - Apollo Atmospheres and Soundtracks
Rock - Here Come The Warm Jets and the next 4 after that.

Here Come the Warm Jets
and
The Plateaux of Mirror (with Harold Budd)
even though Rats is right, you can't go wrong with any.
QuoteOn Land is sort of scary :o
I'm with Tracy on this one, this album can be positively unnerving at the right/wrong time...
It's excellent headphones music but don't buy this & except to have it chill you out as it plays quietly in the background.
I had to turn it off last night as it wasn't conducive to the mood I was trying to set :-/ :-[ :'(

I can't listen to it in the dark unless I have a flashlight next to me...

my guess is that you're real in touch with your pre-evolutionary reptile like self.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I ended up ordering Music For Airports, Another Green World and Here Come the Warm Jets.
Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror with currently my fav of all the Brian Eno CDs that I bought recently. Can anyone recommend some Harold Budd? Tracy?
I only have this & his OST for Mysterious Skin. I love them both & need some more.

I'm not down with Harold Budd knowledge...

Thanks anyway, I shall have to do some research :)
Hey DB! Check out The Pearl. Very purty.
tk
Thanks TK - consider it bought! :)
I picked up Music for Airports on Tuesday and am becoming obsessed. The first track is just astounding.
I absolutely love the quote inside the jacket; something like "ambient music must be as ignorable as it is interesting".
Can't wait until those other two albums of his that I ordered arrive.

you are seriously in for one of the best treats of your life. i'm jealous.
Ambient 1 has become a fixture in my CD player, and I've now got the hunger for more. Is Ambient 2 the next logical step (in the ambient direction)?
This is what my Eno collection consists of: Ambient 1, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Before and After Science, and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. I ordered Here Come the Warm Jets and Another Green World a long time ago, but they never came. :-/
"1/1" is my homework jam.

Just listened to this on YouTube for the first time ever and had my mind expanded. :o
Built to Spill pulled out this great Eno cover last tour

good ol ratsprayer; wonder how Dave's doing.

I still hate myself for not going to see them when they came here a year or two ago. They played that cover, too.
Have you any ambient advice for me (re: my post before the one about the brilliance of "Baby's on Fire")? If not, I'll conclude you're slipping into Capt. Headdy territory, and urge you to step up your game.
I miss Rats, too. Here's hoping he's doing great.

I finally embraced On Land (I actually e-mailed Dave to let him know about a year ago) and I totally dig it.
Thursday Afternoons is amazing; 1 song, 1 hour.
Old school early Frippatronics; Eno/Fripp's Evening Star. The last track An Index of Metals is "high terror electronics".
Apollo Atmospheres is pretty great, too; Eno was hired to create music for a film documenting the Apollo moon missions. So, it's, of course, spacy.
If you're into the ambient, a couple of new finds for me have been>
Boast & Rothe - Quiet Latitudes (the song Svalbard is a 38 minute treat on a very intentional acoustic giutar melody).
Then there's Stars of the Lid and Ken Borghi

Very cool. And thanks for the words. Apollo Atmospheres sounds like where my head is at these days. On the other hand, maybe I'm ready to embrace my "pre-evolutionary reptile-like self?"
I'm spinning Taking Tiger Mountain right now. Has a typewriter ever been incorporated into song better than in "China My China?" The beginning of Grinderman's "No Pussy Blues," maybe, but it's a close race.

yeah, Eno has got so much going on in those early albums that it sort of overwhelms me a bit.
Also, Wrong Way Up with John Cale is a must (a pop/rock record)
QuoteAlso, Wrong Way Up with John Cale is a must (a pop/rock record)
Wow, I had no idea they worked together. Love John Cale.
I can't believe how prolific Brian Eno is. Especially the variety of his catalog.
This song (and Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure) was my first introduction to his genious:
