Ok so a few of my buddies and I have finally decided to make the trek to Manchester for Bonnaroo this year. With all the rumors of Phish and Bruce flying around, we decided that this would be the prime year to do it. I'm not the biggest Phish Phan in the world, but I'm a massive Boss fan and I think seeing him at Roo would be unbelievable. I know a lot of folks here on the boards have gone before, so is there any important tips/suggestions/advice I should know before buying tickets?
Anyways, I have a feeling the lineup this year will pretty amazing, I feel there's a good chance I may get to see the Boss, the National, Wilco, and maybe even MMJ in one place!
Anyways, if anyone else is familiar with "roo clues" prior to the lineup announcement here's the first one for 2009:
Peter Pan had a good roast before he was beat to a pulp
And the ocean spray that kept you at bay
Invites you to take a big gulp
I have no idea...... :-/
First of all, even if MMJ played, if they didn't get late night it'd be a deal breaker for me. I'm glad I sold my tix to the last too Bonnaroos but I keep holding out hope they'll get better. It's become another version of college spring break for hipsters and indie kids.
And they need to back away from the aging rocker headliners. I'm OK with the Boss, but the choice of the Police and Metallica were just abhorrent. The Police especially.
If they paired the Boss with some more respectable headliners, sort of like they did with Petty in '06, it might be worthwhile. Radiohead fit. Oysterhead was the real headliner, but everyone there knew that haha.
Google reveals speculation on Peter, Bjorn and YAWWWWWWWWWN from that. But maybe that Peter Pan reference is a Peanut Butter Pudding Surprise.
Do you think MMJ is headline worthy for the 'Roo yet? I'd still take them as a latenight staple instead.
Thinking on that clue, could it be Pixies? They're from a "Bay" area, and well Peter Pan had Tinkerbell
My guess would be the Cranberries... No clue why they would play Bonnaroo tho. I miss that magical place..
Gin and juice (Snoop?) hmmmm....
ocean spray that kept you at bay=coming from across the pond? (oasis?, blur?)
fun stuff!
i swear to god, though, if THE KILLERS headline, i might have to reconsider. i hate that band THAT much.

I'd say Blur. That would be a MUCH BETTER choice over Killers.....anyday.
The Killers could NOT be headline worthy.
I don't see it. I enjoy a few songs, but come on.
Blur? Maybe. I wonder if Mogwai would show up in support of the Hawk is Howling though. Fun stuff.
If it were the killers, I'd consider the festival dead. haha pun is now intended, though it wasn't when I typed it just a few seconds ago.
Also, the clue I found differed slightly:
Peter Pan had a good roast before he was beat to a pulp, and the ocean spray from a westward bay invites you to take a big gulp.
I mean just from the ocean spray I'd like to say ZEPPELIN but the chances are better that the Stones would headline first, meaning there's no chance.
Really, Superfly, you need to just let any ol run of the mill jam band headline. Hell, have UM do it. They'd at least do it right.
If Phish ends up playing Bonnaroo and I would go to the Roo, then theres a good chance MMJ wont be there at all because me and shows are unlucky that way
And agreed, theyre an awesome latenight band
I could live with a 10PM set start though, just as long as its dark
I don't dislike Bruce but to me it just shows where the Roo' has been going. I mean the Police? Its great if you like these type of bands but I wouldn't really want to go to a festival where these bands are headlining. Who is next the Eagles? Kenny Chesney? where does it stop?

I'm with you regarding The Killers. I'd like to add in Franz Ferdinand too.

I'd love to see Bruce there.
i agree that the festival's changed--but it's also good to have a stage for every kind of music; it's cool to be able to see snoop dog (or kanye) and also see levon and radiohead.....etc
the killers aren't even a real band---
superfly tends to pump stuff up and then not deliver (widespread panic last year???) i'm not getting my hopes up but BLUR would be stellar.

I think Kayne's Roo' career probably ended last year.
It's cool to see a lot of different genres and artists at Roo but when they put such lame bands in the headline spots.... Well let's just say I sold my tickets to last years Roo and didn't pre-order them this year.. And I don't regret it..
Well, to be honest maybe a little because I had heard from a friend they were selling day passes at the gate last year... Can anyone confirm??? I would have gone to Tennessee for one night of MMJ no doubt.

Same situation here, also considered going from NJ to TN just for MMJ.
If its worth it, I'll buy them off craigslist since everyone nickel and dimed us last year for the tix.
I like the diversity, I just don't like the "quality" of the acts. To me, not all the acts there warrant being seen live. Not all genres of music lend themselves to being sweaty and dirty on a farm in the middle of the summer.
I've gone to the last 4 Bonnaroo's and a lot of the time I'll use the headliner time slot to go back to the campsite and cook up some food and drink some beers. There is about 100 other acts besides the headliners and like some have been pointing out, a lot of the headliners I can easily pass on. I go to Bonnaroo because of the great quantity of music I want to see and hear. If 3 time slots are unappealing, that's fine.
That being said, I would love to see the Boss again. I've seen him 3 times and no one puts as much energy into a show. He makes sure to give everything he's got at every show. A lot of time you get 3 hours of greatness.
The key is if you get that nice campsite. Then you can just chill at your tent and listen to the headliners.
Do you think this clue could be a reference to Snoop Dogg? He's from the Western Bay, gulps gin and juice, and is often roasted

you're making things out to be more important than they are. if there's good music out there, go find it and enjoy it. shouldn't it be that simple? seems to me that you're tormenting yourself for no good reason.

i wish it were that simple, but when you're dropping $200 on tix plus 5 day vacation that requires a 14 hour road trip, it damn well better be worth it. i'm just a lowly student, and often it takes a lot of maneuvering to get time off from a summer position.
As for the Blur comments, there is no way in hell Blur is going to play in the US before they play their big reuinon show in England.....they are just too British.....it would be like if Phish got back together and played England before the US.....it just wont happen, I would love to eat my own words, but it just wont happen

i agree..bonnaroo has become all about the late night shows and the smaller stages; so much good music, it's not all necessarily from 8-11pm. ;-)
Having a ton of music and a ton of bands is great but also think about how many bands you miss. There are only so many hours in the day. Obviously you go for the bands you really want to see and that is more than enough to get your money's worth especially at a big fest like the Roo but one of the things I always hear from my friends who have gone is they missed such and such band, or didn't get a chance to check this band out because they were playing on a stage far from our camp site or another band we liked was playing at the same time. My friends missed Neil Young one year because they got lazy at their site and didn't make it over. Now I realize that was their fault but I know from festival experience it does get tiring going back and forth from stages to camp site and back. It would kill me if two bands I really liked were playing at the same time. I remember Lollapuloza a few years ago had MMJ and the Raconteurs playing at the same time. I think there are positives and negatives to having a ton of bands and a ton of stages.
i missed the flaming lips in '06 because i finally crashed hard after something of 30 hours of non-stop action.
i consider the trip to 'roo to be worth it if MMJ has latenight slotting. they could have fucking hanson headline with Jan Terri doing the pre-headline act and I wouldn't care.
The way I typically evaluate it is that I consider the average ticket price to an average concert $30. If I can add up enough bands that I would normally pay $30 if they came to my area, and that amount exceeds the ticket price, then I'll buy a 'roo ticket.
Im with bold99 in that especially with Bonnaroo, every year I see the lineup times for each day, there is at least 1 instance and usually 2 each day that have conflicts with bands I want to see. I cant stand that and is probably part of the reason why I havent gone yet.
And el chode, according to my sister Hanson is pretty good these days. You might wanna check them out :D

You heard wrong. Bonnaroo doesn't sell day passes at all, just 3 day passes, and those could be purchased @ the local radio station in town. Don't know the call letters, but they have been doing that the last couple years from what I have seen.
Also, it is a big chance, but there are alwys people trying to sell their tickets at the festival for alot cheaper than the face value, but its not something I would recommend.

I'd be so down with Bruce as a headliner. I lucked into some crazy good seats to see him last year, and he still puts on a helluva show.

Who knows the Killers might have decided to fellate the entire music industry like Jack Johnson did last summer and get themselves as a headliner on every festival possible

they epitomize everything i hate about music--! do they even play instruments? when they first came out, all these UK festivals wanted them to headline and they couldn't because they didn't have enough songs...you'd think they could play the whole album and do some covers? no, they couldn't do it because they didn't know any other songs...they are awful. i HATE them. if someone says they like they, they automatically lose credibility w/me. EVEN if they have all the verve's b-side collection;
so far i've heard ben harper, bruce, phish, grace potter, derek trucks, allman bros, the dead.

I think they play instruments, don't they? For me, the problem is that their music has no soul; it is strangely sexless. I dunno. I recently spent about 4 hours in a car with a friend who had the new record on repeat. Miraculously, we are still friends.
I suspect we'll have a leak of the full Roo lineup this week.
i never believe the leaks. however, based on current activity in the industry generally, plus that hint, I'll wager on:
Phish (headline)
Bruce (headline)
Snoop Dogg (headline)
The Dead
Something Claypool related (ok, that's a copout/given)
Ben Harper
Franti & Spearhead
The Crowes
UM (latenight)
The Strokes
She & Him
Animal Collective
Dr. Dog
Allmans to atone for previous sins
I think Grace Potter is a given
oh, and the Killers and Nicole Atkins f/Jim James
I could def make the trip if that 8% of the artists end up announced, and that 8% is extrapolated [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
I dont understand Snoop as a headliner though...I mean, I wouldnt mind hearing him tear through the whole Doggystyle album, but headliner?
I don't think he'd get top-tier billing at Roo, not by a longshot.
Derek Trucks has hinted that Dickey may play with the Allmans again in the near future. By the sounds of it, it won't be a permanent thing, but wouldn't Bonnaroo be the perfect event for this reunion to happen other than a Beacon show or two?

Love the Black Angels and Black Mountain. I think a Black Angels late night show at the Roo would be fairly badass.
i've only heard the black angels album with bloodhounds on my trail and sniper at the gates of hell and what not, but bloodhounds on my trail is one of the most badass songs in my library.
I'd like to see Conor Oberst there again. The Bright Eyes set at Roo was fantastic. Jim came out too. 8-)

was it in 2006 jim came out w/Bright Eyes and the guy from Super Furry Animals and Gillian Welsh? I was dissappointed in that show but it was awesome at the end. i didn't appreciate it at the time but what a show. (or was that 2005)
Yes and I was kicking myself for missing half that show. I forget why, but I just caught the end of it.
And the SFA guy's name is Gruff. How can you forget that? Gruff Rhys or something.

Is a Faith No More Coachella reunion likely to spill over into the 'roo?
Didn't that rumor get squashed by someone yesterday?
QuoteDidn't that rumor get squashed by someone yesterday?
I have no idea. I can't read that twitter page or the hints page because they make no sense. It's a lot of letters, and then it says "all hints are solved" when in fact only two are and they're just speculations on Peter Bjorn and John, which I really don't think is a big enough band to warrant a clue to begin with.
I would love a Faith No More reunion, if it meant an increased likelihood of a Crudo performance...
Quotei thought some of you had the hookup to the initial lineup already??

i think the official lineup comes out Feb 2nd--but everyone is almost certain about Phish (and i heard from my source definitely Bruce--confirmed by his PR rep to someone) I think the lineup's gonna be standard--something for everyone :-)
February 3rd, isn't it? I've heard from an industry friend in Nashville that Bruce, Phish and (guh) Zac Brown Band are all confirmed.
In good news, one of the Roo clues points to DBT with Booker T, and it's supported (however slightly) by this email from Patterson Hood of DBT (italics mine):
"We will be playing some dates with Booker, including our first ever New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival appearance on Friday April 24th."

Yup. ;)
Yeah, Booker T has a new record out in April called Potato Hole, and DBT are his backing band on it. Neil Young's on it too.
Zac Brown Band...yeah. I think they are a mainstream country act. Nothing to get too excited about.
I really really really want to see Bruce there.
Here is your Bonnaroo update:
-Bonnaroo offically said they will announce the lineup this Tuesday (Feb 3rd)
-In the past day Bonnaroo has added Phish, Beastie Boys, Springsteen, TV on the Rado, Mars Volta, Bon Iver, Animal Collective, David Byrne, and NIN as their friends on Myspace among others. They also added NKOTB, Lionel Richie, Nickelback, Hanson as their friend as well...probably just to screw with us since they know they were being watched ;)

2005: That
was great
I'll be up, Jerzee! Can't wait to see what they have in store.
I'll be up too. We'll probably get it earlier anyways.
The Tennessean says it'll be up on their site at midnight, but Ghosts is probably right...we'll see it a bit earlier (I hope).

My Bad......Paul McCartney, Phish, The Dead
I'd be skeptical about McCartney...he's already headlining Coachella.

Cool...Wilco is a nice surprise that I didnt see floating around before
No MMJ though :-/
What the fuck is Coheed and Cambria doing in all these lineups? Do they think that they've been quiet long enough that people will just forget that they're just another emo band with 7 minute songs? Christ.
I wasn't wow'd at this list, but I think the reason was obvious. It could have been worse though too. Much worse. Plus, David Byrne tix are usually the price that your 'roo pass is gonna be so why not?
Also, Mike Farris is a former Cheetah Wheelie, I gotta respect that.
And lastly, there doesn't seem to be a musical "theme" which is good, because that means its more varied. I thought '08 was decidedly metal and '07 was as indie as possible
Ho. Lee. Fuck.
Count me the hell in.
See you there. So stoked!
Whatever you do try to go see Toubab Krewe. I know the guys in the band and they are all great musicians. They are totally plugged into their music and YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! The energy level of their shows just builds and builds and builds...
This is THE best lineup roo ever put together, and this is just the inital. The list above doesn't have band of horses, who are on the official lineup. I'm there. I was anyways.

Coheed is a good band. Good guys too.
I also think you have the wrong idea about bonnaroo in general. 08's theme was metal? There were like, 2 metal bands there.
I'm in. Can't wait. All I Can Say
DOWN IS PLAYING BONNAROO?!?!?!?! UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!!!!
QuoteI also think you have the wrong idea about bonnaroo in general. 08's theme was metal? There were like, 2 metal bands there.
They had a focus on heavier music than normal, that's all I mean by that.
I've seen Coheed more than my fair share. They started out as a rip-off of At the Drive-In and wound up a rip-off of Mars Volta.
i'm not too impressed (no ryan adams or black keys or jason isbell or levon) but it still looks pretty good. i'm willing to forgo the Phish sets and go back to the camp and drink while waiting for NIN and beastie boys!
i LOVE LOVE LOVE that Wilco will be there. i've never seen em. I also have never seen alejandro escovedo or lucinda williams.
who is ben harper's new band?
See you all there (probably)
what are people's camping choices? are the lot of you doing VIP or regular?

I'm not doing VIP again this year. It was worth it last year, but I'm not sure if it is this year.

Skip Phish?! Shame on you.
Harper's new band is that same band I PM'd you those youtube clips of a month or so ago. If I make it down there, Ill definitely be checking them out.
I wouldnt mind another superjam like 2007's with Harper, Questlove, and John Paul Jones either. That was awesome.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Keys added. The other acts you named, not so sure. I'm pretty stoked for this lineup; at first glance, I was a bit disappointed that there weren't any big surprises, but then I realized that there are a ton of bands I LOVE on that list. Yay!
I'm hoping for a late night Wilco set. Prepare to be amazed. This is a band at the absolute top of their game. Sass and I will be on the rail!
I haven't seen Alejandro Escovedo since he played my college cafeteria; SO psyched to see him. And Lucinda, I've never managed to see her, even had tickets several times but something always got in the way.
I heard Ben Harper found his new band when an Austin cabbie played him a tape, is that true?
This is my first Roo; planning to go VIP. Yay, see y'all there!

I do regular camping, but thats only because I am usually the one that helps set up camp inforoo for the meet up on friday. Last year felt like I was going through the motions when I was there and ther crowd seemed as though they were doing the same. I know the atmosphere this year will be different. Can't wait!
man so stoked. Tried to get bruce tickets up here in philly and couldnt, so im happy ill be able to see him down at roo.
Really excited to see nin and beastie boys again. Hopefully some more great bands will be added (KOL please) but looks good.

I was thinking about the ready parked trailer, but good god, $3200?
I know, right? I thought $3200 might not be toooo much more than VIP, especially if you split it among 6 people, but that doesn't include your tickets, does it?
QuoteI know, right? I thought $3200 might not be toooo much more than VIP, especially if you split it among 6 people, but that doesn't include your tickets, does it?
If youre splitting it with people like that, I dont see why you wouldnt go that route...Itd be basically the same price
I could watch a four hour set of the following wilco songs played randomly over and over
at least that's what she/you said
impossible germany
spiders
i'm the man who loves you
via chicago
especially at least that's what she/you said. that song is one of the greatest songs to hear live; it's basically what happens when you line-in to a broken heart.
and impossible germany's outro melts face in the same way that lay low does - you have all these individual parts dovetailing together, falling apart, and the dovetailing together again until you either die or orgasm

Tweedy, Stirratt and/or Sansone need to come sing a late night set at my tent. One...or all three. I ain't picky. ;D

yes and also tweedy's version of hesitating beauty---i've always loved this band but in the past year have REALLY loved them; never seen them live..
Alady/Sass--i will try to be on the rails w/you for that one if i go :-)
If this was the real list, I would be there in a heartbeat.. I'm not so sure now.

Right, but then you're crammed into an RV with 5 other people. When you start dividing it up enough to approach the VIP price, it starts sounding a lot less comfortable.
