I saw it last Monday as part of CIMMfest.  It's pretty great - not really a documentary like I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, but more of a straight up concert film.  The performances are absolutely stellar.  Nels shines, in particular.

Nice!  I was there the next night.  Tweedy made fun of me (and my doll), so I'm glad only the first night made the DVD.  ;D

I read that as "Nels Shoes" which at the Philly shoe looked like clown shoes from the rafters.

Downloading it right now and waiting for the mail to come in.

Come on MMJ, one up them!

...bump...

Just got it in the mail yesterday, watching it while reading some homework now and it is awesome. First song I put on was "At Least That's What You Said", which is the song I judge all Wilco performances by (except now Impossible Germany is quickly becoming that song, followed by Via Chicago).

And it was nothing less than goosebumpy. My only wish is that they just recorded one show straight through for the DVD. I'll put it this way: it's no Okonokos, but it is worth having.

Also, after watching "I'm the Man Who Loves You" it becomes painfully obvious that Jim James needs to one-up Tweedy's sequined suit, which is obviously an attempt to one-up the cape, even if the cape came after the suit.

After watching the actual "dvd" and not the bonus features first, this is actually a really cool and unexpected production. It's part documentary, part concert, but it really just feels like a treat for the fans more than "quick, we need a concert DVD!". It's full of interviews, insight, backstory, and off-stage tour footage with the performances as a soundtrack.

That's great to hear.  This will be the first time seeing them for everyone in my party, so we're very excited.  Do you remember how long they played.  Also, did you catch the opener either night?  We're all debating whether to take it in or have another drink at the local watering hole and just be happy with Wilco.
The Cincinnati show in June might be the only other one I'll make it to.

Oh, cool!  You're in for a treat...I think they're at the top of their game these days, really playing together like parts in a well oiled machine.
They went on around 8:30 each night and finished up around 10:45 or 11, with a few short breaks between encores.

Here's the setlist from Tuesday:

Wilco, Pabst Theatre, Milwaukee WI, 4/14/09

Wilco the Song
Hummingbird
At Least That's What You Said
Muzzle of Bees
You Are My Face
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Pot Kettle Black
Ashes of American Flags
One By One
I'll Fight
Via Chicago
Impossible Germany
Jesus, Etc.
Handshake Drugs
A Shot in the Arm

Encore 1:
Late Greats
Heavy Metal Drummer
Theologians
Walken
I'm the Man Who Loves You

Encore 2:
California Stars
Hate It Here
Box Full of Letters
Kingpin

A Hawk and A Hacksaw are opening in Athens, right?  I really didn't care for them, but they might be worth checking out if you're so inclined.  Kind of old-timey/Eastern European music that might conjure images of folk-dancing peasants.

Awesome, can't wait.   Nice setlist.  Yeah, it's Hawk and a Hacksaw (I love your description!) as the opener.  I think we all decided last night that between rushing around picking up babysitters, making sure all the kids are fed, etc. we're just going to skip the opener and try to find enough time for a few brews before heading to the show.

You know what I love about Wilco? I've seen them at tiny venues and in multi-thousand seat theaters, and regardless of how big the venue is, you never feel lost in the crowd or that the show is any less intimate.

They always sound great and believe it or not, I can name more than 4 songs that are must listens or should listens.  Personally, I don't think I need to hear Impossible Germany anymore.  Now Kidsmoke they can play all night long, just one song.

So long as you hear Steam Engine live on NYE@MSG, you'll experience one of the pinnacles of modern music. ;)

I haven't received the DVD yet, but I listened to the soundtrack yesterday and they sound so good.  Wish I'd seen the first night at 9:30 Club instead of the second, and that I hadn't made a last minute decision to dump my New Orleans' ticket!  :'(

Pennylane, we have a big contingent of hardcore Wilco fans coming to Bonnaroo.  Come join us for their set!  :)

Well of course there are more songs! Personally, anytime I get anything off the Mermaid Ave collections I consider it the best Wilco show ever (Hoodoo Voodoo was especially rockin)

But I just had to pick like the top of the top. I love Impossible Germany only because of it's live version. I grew tired of it on the album, but then I heard it live and it sparked this fury in me of borderline obsession. I love the end of it for the same reason I love Lay Low - you have all these various parts bouncing off each other, then dovetailing together only to fall apart again until the very end where they all intertwine and wind up coming together in a wave of goosebumps.

At Least That's What You Said could be played live on repeat for me and I'd never get tired of that breakdown.

And Kidsmoke of course is awesome, especially when it's extended to like 15 mins.

But DO NOT bullshit about the lack of Steam Engine on NYE.

I have a special place in my heart for Wilco.  I met my (future) husband in part because of them.

I had some Wilco, Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo CDs on my desk at work and my husband was a courier at the time and was picking up some files (pick up station was right by my desk) - and the CDs caught his eye.  He wanted to know who sat at the desk because whoever it was had good taste in music (back in 97 Wilco was no where near as popular as they are now).

The rest is history... ;D

I got a ticket, so it's looking like it might be in the cards.  Hope to see you there!  No family there, but some friends in OKC and some driving up from Dallas for the show.

Cain's looks so cool.  I've never been there, would love to see a show there someday.  Never heard anything but great things about the place.  You're so lucky to have been at that show!

We were at the Pabst around 5:30 to pick up Sassbox's ticket, and saw a big line of people there but nothing had happened yet.  A friend of mine stuck around and said that the photographer showed up eventually and picked a few people out of the line.  Those people got to put on the band's Nudie suits:

Then they mixed those people back into the line with the rest of the people in their winter coats.  I guess there was also a big orange and white birthday cake?   ;D

I heard the band also had a photo shoot in the alley of a well-known German restaurant nearby; they were wearing party hats and there was a camel.  I don't think I could make this stuff up, but here's a pic that was posted over on the Wilco forums   ;D

Did you make it to the show, Hawkeye?  What did you think?

I did make it to the show!  I thought it was all-around one of the best shows I've ever seen...but then again I tend to say that after a lot of shows!  I thought Tweedy's voice sounded fantastic.  The sound in general was great.  I didn't know that Tweedy played a lot of the guitar stuff...I thought it was ALL Nels.  The only thing that sucked is I was uber-hungover and i was sitting in the upper balcony, which was pretty steep...I was getting dizzy, feeling sick, and had to make frequent bathroom trips.  And there was only one toilet upstairs...I don't mean one restroom...I mean one toilet.  That's it.  I had to go downstairs usually.  So besides being sick as a dog it was a great show!  And I cannot believe that photo shoot story...hilarious.  A camel?  REally?  And I've always wanted to wear a Nudie suit!!!  I almost bought one once, even though it was $1000.  Luckily my better judgment took hold...I think?

AAAAAAMMMMMEEEEEEENNNNNNN!!!!!!!!  Cain's is the coolest venue in Oklahoma and an MMJ show there would be amazing!

Meant to ask you Crispy if you saw M. Ward there last month?  Are you going to the Wilco show in June?  I'm pretty sure Atdawn said she and her husband would be there.

I missed the M. Ward show dammit, poor planning.   :-/

I am going to the Wilco show, so we'll have a meet up somewhere down there for anybody else who's going around here - JJ's Alley is just across the street, might be a good spot.
