Forgive me if there was already a thread on this somewhere, I searched but could not find one, and I was just too curious and wanted to see if people agreed with me on this...
I kept hearing all the hype about this band and their album and saw it on like EVERY critics top ten of albums for the year. So I finally bought it and gave it a couple of spins.
I have to say the music is beautiful and the the vocals as well... just an excellent sounding record... but...
GOOD LORD THEY SOUND JUST LIKE MY MORNING JACKET!!!!! I mean half the songs on their album I could picture being on At Dawn?!?!? I don't know....
it's a beautiful record but yes, i agree.
Quoteit's a beautiful record but yes, i agree.
Ha OK good I am glad to hear that... lol. It was driving me nuts! I mean don't get me wrong I think it is a beautiful record. However when I went back and read like 10 different magazine's critic's top 10 albums of 2008, this was in the top 5 (some even at #1), while "Evil Urges" was maybe in 2 top 10? Wrong... wrong... wrong...
I picked up Uncut magazine this month and in the letters some guy thanks them for turning him onto Fleet Foxes but says when he first heard them he thought they were ripping off one of his favorite bands, MMJ.
I personally can't get into them. I agree the vocals sound like Jim though.
What do you think sounds similar? I don't hear it at all.
I know it's a good talking point but c'mon peeps, stop reading top ten lists. I take that back, stop taking them seriously. If Fleet Foxes sounds like MMJ, Al Borlan looks like Bob Villa :-?

On the EP Sun Giant, listen to Innocent Son.
When I 1st heard it I thought I was listening to a new Solo Jim James song. Regardless, I think it's great someone has a voice similar to Jims that appeals to me. Everbody sounds like somebody. If it's good.... turn it the FUCK UP.
Okay, good call. I'm still not sure Robin's bitin' Jim's style exactly, I think they just happen to have similar voices. I think they're pretty easily distinguished from one another, and I like what both of them are doing with what they've got :)
Agree there ain't nothin' new under the sun :)
Robin may have a similar natural timbre, but he, by no means, uses this to rip off Jim's vocal style. Robin's intricacies are so much more baroque, preferring to step around a bit more tonally for emphasis. And listen to the album the whole way through. He's got a similar voice, which can't be helped, but he doesn't use it the same at all. This is his band and his music and they sound like the Fleet Foxes and not My Morning Jacket. Love these guys, what they've done and what they stand for. I've not met humbler popular musicians before. Even when I stalkerishly stopped Josh Tillman in the street before the show, he wasn't even weirded out that I recognized him, so much as really pleased to be recognized and to have had his music connected with by someone. I'll stick up for these dudes any day.
His voice is similar to Jims, but I think thats about it. Their sound is different, I think, even from older MMJ.

I am so excited to stalk Josh Tillman at SXSW. Shhh, don't tell him I said that.

I haven't heard these guys yet but you just totally sold me on them.
Lots of similarities with the vocals but I can hear just as many differences. They deserve the hype.
Fleet Foxes S/T>Evil Urges

I thought that at first, but after listening to them more I think they share more in common with CSNY then MMJ

I consider myself a huge Fleet Foxes fan, but Tom is (me * 10). Go through the other thread(s) to see more fine points on the Foxes/MMJ differences. I will never tire of listening to Sun Giant.
Good Lord, Sun Giant is absolute perfection. So perfectly short.

EVIL URGES >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FLEET FOXES.
Hell, the combo of Smokin From Shootin into TMIGTS pat. II is better than that whole album.
When I first heard them, I thought his voice sounded likes Jim's, but now after falling in love with Fleet Foxes, I don't think they sound at all alike.
The only similarities I can see is that both are fabulous, brilliant groups and deserve a ton of praise and attention.
And as much as I love MMJ, I like Fleet Foxes better than Evil Urges. That album and Sun Giant continues to blow me away.
I think he sounds very much the same as Jim. Even uses the same vocal effect that was used on earlier mmj albums. They are cool but derivative.
QuoteWhen I first heard them, I thought his voice sounded likes Jim's, but now after falling in love with Fleet Foxes, I don't think they sound at all alike.
Same here!!
I loveloveLOVE Fleet Foxes!!! I just discovered them a few weeks ago. I bought the album and sat down and listened to it beginning to end three or four times in a row. I can't remember the last time I've done that. It usually takes me several times to really love an album, but this was love at first listen!
MMJ however took me a pretty long time to appreciate, especially considering I'm a Louisvillian! ;) Not to say they're any less brilliant..it just sometimes works out that way.
I liked the description the winter beach boys.
Oh but yeah, they sounds a lot like MMJ.
If you're going to rip someone off, you might as well rip off someone awesome.
I really, really wanted to like them. I gave 'em a try & they didn't immediately grab me - which is fine because most new music doesn't do it for me the first time. I have the CD a few more listens. Nothing. I tried again this morning, thinking that maybe, they would fall into the Sunday morning music category (mellow stuff like Taj Mahal, old Elton John, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid soundtrack) but - still no...

And LucyLew, you picked up the s/t, right? Have you given Sun Giant a listen yet? Because that's what I had first. Listen hard to the words on "Oliver James" if you will, as well, as when I finally figured out what that song was about, it about killed me.
I really do just
love this band, and I realize they aren't the most original concept out there, but having seen them 3 times already (once driving from Athens to SC to do so), I will definitely attest for their being incredible people both on and off the stage. These guys have the right heads about what they're doing, and it comes through with a genuine joy in the live show and the recording.
Let me know how you weren't grabbed by it, or what you were hoping for out of these guys, and I'll do my best to help fix that!
i was saying that BOH are the imitators.
i don't see very much in common between fleet foxes and MMJ, maybe nothing.
and i like fleet foxes.
sorry for the confusion d00d.
I think Fleet Foxes sound more similar to MMJ than Band of Horses.
I think NOBODY sounds like MMJ. When I first heard their music I thought what IS this?! and where can I find more like it! I found that could not find anything even remotely similar to MMJ.

Maybe my review/critique/slam was a little harsh. I just expected a little more rock or hippie jam,to me it was too hymnal gospel space, building to something I waited for and did not get.I understand why people like it.
Some tracks had parts I liked but not that big of dose.I will leave it in rotation see how I like it in shuffle play.
So I'll rerate it reverse flying V and try to recycle it.
Thanks for your understanding, kind words, and pictures.

It wasn't that I hated them or anything. They just didn't stand out. If they were a color - they'd be beige.
But you have peaked my curiousity. Methinks I might have to check out at least the song "Oliver James". I'll letcha' know!

I agree with this statement.
Robin's voice is most definitely similar to Jim's, but it's still beautiful and unique. But c'mon, we have similarities to everyone and everything that exists, yet we're each completely unique.
Beautiful music is just beautiful music, it doesn't matter who else it sounds like or doesn't sound like. Shit, when I first started listening to mmj and singing along, I found that my vocal range and style is also very similar to Jim's, yet different.
Everything is the same yet unique. ya dig? :o
I lost out on two solid years of BoH fandom because some yahoo told me they were a MMJ ripoff. When I finally came around and gave 'em a listen, I didn't think they sounded similar at all, and they're fantastic in their own right.
Let people make up their own minds.
Right. Frickin. On.

Blue Ridge Mountains is my favorite right now. I love that song.
When I first heard the Fleet Foxes, I (guess you can say) hated them. Their sound somehow triggered my MMJ defense mode and I instantly branded them as mundane rip-off artists. I must have given them the ultimate insult somewhere on this board and for it I was deservingly put in my place. It took a while just to like them and now it's safe to say, I love them. I now feel like a fool. I suggest that anyone that feels the same way I did should reconsider their feelings about Fleet Foxes. They are a wondeful band of artists.
"White Winter Hymnal" "Meadowlark" and "Oliver James" are absolutely beautiful.

I'm really getting into them lately.

After reading this entire thread, I have no idea what to think. Seems that from MMJ fans, its about a 50/50 love or hate split on these guys.
I checked on the 30 sec clips of the album and EP awhile ago, and the guy sounds like Jim, but that was the only similarity I heard. That said, nothing I heard really made me what to delve deeper with this band.
Since there's so many here who dont like them, I feel like Im probably in that group, although after reading through all of this, Im slighty intrigued to hear more.

Well it's going to be almost impossible now, but you should try to listen to the album without any preconcieved notions and also a lawn chair that is about 18" deep under water in a rocky river bed somewhere in the middle of nowhere on 95 degree summer day. That worked for me anyway.

Interesting because based on the limited amount Ive heard, I thought someone else's post calling them the "winter beach boys" was on point.
Ill have to wait a couple months for some warm weather to do that, but maybe Ill give that a try. It's gonna be hard for me to buy an album that Im not so sure Ill like though.

it's seriously like a $10 album, or you could buy the sun giant EP, which is actually probably a more concise first impression anyway, for only $7.
I found them around march this year and their album hit perfectly in time for summer for me. it really is a perfect summer album, as all the harmony and instrumentation just drips of the beauty these guys create. it really is just huge, joyous music, and i love every bit of it for how much these guys have put into it.
So, I officially love Fleet Foxes, and I'd like to know if there are any live recordings to purchase or download for free? My local record store doesn't even have the Sun Giant EP, so I don't think they can help me out, and iTunes doesn't offer anything either.

I don't get this record.I listened to the song Bumbeli likes
Your Protector I liked about 40 secs in middle of song. Must be me
I always try to listen to music without any preconcieved ideas about whether I'll like it or not. I decided to get the Fleet Foxes album because I'd heard words like "Crosby, Stills & Nash", "West Coast harmonies" etc. etc. It sounded right up my street.
But it really doesn't do much for me at all. I gave it a couple of spins at home and then left it for a while. I decided to give it another go on a long car journey and it still doesn't light my fire.
Sure the harmonies are okay.....but its got no meat to it. The best adjective I can come up with is lightweight. Seems to me its part of this trendy, skinny jeans and stupid hair indie movement that is "in" at the moment. I know I sound like an old man......but it never ceases to amaze me at the crap people will listen to if they are told its trendy. I'm not saying FF is crap, just that its part of that whole scene that is of the moment. I wonder how long they'll be around.
Unlike MMJ it's got no balls!

Well said.I couldn't give two shits about FF. The onlyest reason I even got it is my wife wanted to check them out. I know a lot of people dig them and I thought maybe I was missing out on good tunes, which is true in the sense that I don't listen to a lot of the new bands out there.
And I know there are a lot of good ones. More often than not when I buy new music it's not new at all it's old. So much good old stuff out there it seems there's no room in my head for new bands. There are a ton of bands I see or have seen where I have none of their music nor do I feel I need to. People always ask what is my favorite band or show.I always say favorites are limiting and my favorite show would be the one that I'm at that moment ;)

Hey! I heard that!! I'm only in the other room.
Since I got your attention. Do I have to do anything today? Cuz if I do it will have to be a joint effort. Hey.. what's that over there... hey... ....fuck.. shit. Honey we got roaches....Help!
Well, I like Fleet Foxes. I haven't heard that EP that folks talk about, but their album is wonderful. It's not a rocker...it doesn't swing like the Stones, or roar like Sabbath, but that's not what I want from it, not what it has to offer. And I wouldn't call it "lightweight", just like I wouldn't call Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece lightweight. Both those albums are complex, contemplative...both those albums dwell someplace green, and outside. Fleet Foxes is dramatic stuff, cinematic even...I could see them scoring movies. Their music is imaginative, and diverse, and (for me anyway) highly effective at carrying me away.
They're rad. I wonder if they can pull it off live, but the recorded stuff sounds great.

I don't see how anyone couldn't love their performances on SNL. Look what it did to this guy:

;D No, the only time they have been to St. Louis, that I know of, was when they opened for Death Cab and I didn't want to spend the 50 bucks.
QuoteWell, I like Fleet Foxes.

I can see them scoring some green ::)
I hated the Doobie Bros >:( Until I saw them live In SF (1975) yes..old I know... point is, after that I needed Doobies, needed them bad, had to have Doobies everyday. So I hope I never see FF live imagine what could happen ;)

Okay, that's hilarious. ;D ;D ;D
Love the Foxes!
QuoteQuoteSo, I officially love Fleet Foxes, and I'd like to know if there are any live recordings to purchase or download for free? My local record store doesn't even have the Sun Giant EP, so I don't think they can help me out, and iTunes doesn't offer anything either.
Download this show immediately....

Downloading now, you got my expectations up pretty high, so I hope it's a spectacular show :)

It is awesome, very good quality, all the great songs an they are in a good mood. In the end of Crayon Angels/Oliver James when he talks about the guys shout ntb, when he says "jerks", I had to laugh so much
Not liking Fleet Foxes is just plain silly.
:( I feel like I'm missing something, and please someone point me in the right direction if you can. I can't stand their S/T album.
I had really high hopes, I know they're great musicians, great voice and all that, it's the songs and lyrics I don't like. And since they have J.Tillman I'm willing to give them another shot, looking forward to hearing new songs that is.
I don't own Sun Giant so that's one thing that may make a difference, but I was just so disappointed in the ST album it makes me reluctant to buy it. I'm keeping my copy though, if I ever decide to go running through a valley picking flowers whilst wearing a prairie dress this would be the perfect soundtrack.
Basically, I want to like them I just don't...
...yet :-/
Get yourself a hammock, lay down beneath a cherry tree or whatever tree you like (I prefer cherry), play either Your Protector, Ragged Wood White Winter Hymnal or Blue Ridge Mountains (they should all be on their s/t album), and enjoy the beauty of both nature and Fleet Foxes.
To be honest, I didn't really like them at first either, but one day it happened, and I really enjoy them ever since. (so does my sister :))
I still wish they were playing Bonnaroo... :(
Red Squirrel in the morning. Red Squirrel in the evening.

Fleet Foxes seem to have recorded their music specifically for the purpose of relaxing on one's deck with a generous cocktail or two. Or maybe they did that just for me.

Here's a video from a concert taken in germany, excellent sound and video quality, hope it hasn't been posted before.
Enjoy :)
