Man, I love Country Music.
Not the sort of shit you see on Country Music TV today but the real deal.
I'm talking Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette & Loretta Lynn etc etc etc
Who are your favourites? What are your Favourite Albums? Who've you seen in concert?
Let's talk Country!
Huzzzzzah!
All righty.
Favourite girls:
Loretta Lynn She's possibly my favourite favourite. Her duets with Conway are good (favourite is Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man), but my favourite of all times is her and Ernest Tubb. You Aint Woman Enough is possibly my favourite song from her, but Fist City is a close second. I loved the movie Nashville, and I especially loved the "Loretta" story. I also think that Coal Miner's Daughter is a brilliant movie.
Tammy Wynette I have tried, and failed, many times to sing Stand By Your Man like she does. I have, however, learned most of the duets she and George did. We sang Golden Ring once. People didn't get it. Tammy was badass, and she could sing.
Patsy Cline I don't know if there's any need to explain any further on that one.
Elizabeth Cotten I don't know if she's considered folk or country, but she's kind of country to me. If you haven't heard this woman sing, or read her story, you have got to. What a lady. Freight Train is probably my favourite of her songs.
June Carter Cash Mmm hm.
I'm having to stop myself from saying loads of people, because they're not what I consider the old school country stars.
Dolly Parton She's pretty damn amazing.
Fellas:
Johnny Cash Johnny Cash is probably the manliest man of all the men ever. He was very bad, and also very good. Bad as in badass. There was that weird period where he had a tv show, and I can not stand watching him sing Daddy Sang Bass with the Oak Ridge Boys. Favourite songs: I Walk The Line; Get Rhythm; Long Black Veil (oh my); his version of Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone) from the American recordings.
George Jones Also a badass, but slightly less appealing for it. I got to see him play a couple of years back at Massey Hall. His voice rips my heart in half. He Stopped Loving Her Today - holy crap.
Hank Williams Anything by him. I think he's my favourite. He's the first person I think of when I think of old country music. Plus, my Dad used to sing his songs ALL the time. Like, every morning when he was shaving. That's how I used to wake up. And my Dad can sing. Favourites: Lost Highway; Your Cheatin' Heart; Why Don't You Love Me; Lovesick Blues. Oh yeah, and Settin' The Woods on Fire.
Merle Haggard I don't know him as well as the others, and he's a little more on the newish side, but The Bull and The Beaver is hysterical. Also, not very fond of that one he sings about rainbows. I could do without that whole era of him. He's also a badass.
Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Also another favourite of my Dad, "ahh haaaas" and all. ;)
The Louvin Brothers Satan is Real was the first I'd ever really come to know about the weird, violent, woodsy old-timey songs. I loved their harmonies.
Waylon Jennings Bad. Ass.
I love the Carter Family.
I mean, I know these are all fairly obvious choices, I guess, but when I realized that I liked Country music (as opposed to hating it most of my early life for the sole reason that my Dad loved it), my entire world changed. No jokes. And then I got all interested in the song structures, and about how most of the old songs (especially Carter Family, and the real early stuff) were from ancient folk songs that had come from old Irish, English and Scottish songs.
Oh man. And then there's Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack, although, I kind of feel like they should get their own category.
Hank!!!!
Johnny Cash
June Carter Cash
George Jones
Great to see some love for the legends!
Here are some of my favourite artists/albums.
Waylon Jennings - what a voice & quite a picker too.
From 73-75 Waylon put out 5 of the best country albums of all time. You can pick them all up cheap from amazon.co.uk for the price of 2 CDs, Lonesome On'ry and Mean/Honky Tonk Heroes on 1CD & This Time/the Ramblin' Man/Dreaming My Dreams on the other.
These 2CDs are much better than any Waylon Best Of. Interesting fact: Waylon recorded the Theme Tune for the original Dukes of Hazzard & was the Narrator for the show.
Willie Nelson - Willie needs no introduction! An American Institution! I have too many Willie CDs to mention. Like Waylon, the 70's were good to Willie. His 60's output is great too.
Johnny Cash - Another American Institution!
His Autobiography is maybe my favourite book of all time!
When I first saw the video for Hurt I cried...
The Prison CDs (Folsom & San Quentin) are a great place to start, so is the The Essential Johnny Cash 1955-1983 3CD boxset + all of his American Recordings are excellent.
Merle Haggard - I have the Down Every Road 4CD boxset which is good but trails as it reaches the late 70's, 80's (which country artist didn't?)
Again, amazon.co.uk has some great 2LPsfor1's on offer, Strangers/Swinging Doors is the best & is a good place to start.
I feel that Kris Kristofferson deserves a mention for his first 2 Albums Me and Bobby Mcgee & The Silver Tongued Devil and I + the man is such a dude!
I'll write about the ladies next time...
I'd like to throw in Billy Joe Shaver. he's the real deal.
saw him live about 2 years ago together with Panama Red, another real deal.
QuoteI'd like to throw in Billy Joe Shaver. he's the real deal.

You're so right!
I was sat thinking, Shit, I've gotta add Billy Joe to my list!
I was lucky enough to see Billy Joe Shaver in the UK a year or 2 back at a tiny little club in London called the Borderline (were Pearl Jam played their 1st UK show & Townes Van Zandt played his last show ever...)
The show was amazing! Billy Joe had us in stitches with his between song stories.
Legend has it that Billy Joe held a gun to Waylon Jennings at one of Willie's 4th July picnic's in the 70's & told him that if he didn't record his music he would shoot him dead.
That's how Honky Tonk Heroes came about.
Not sure if it's true but it's a great story!
dragonboy, bet you'll like this. scroll down a little and you'll find an mp3 of a song written by Billy Joe Shaver & Panama Red but recorded by none other than Fred Neil.

CC - You SO da Man!!!
Written by Billy Joe, recorded by Fred?!! Now we're talkin'!!!
Downloading it now - Thanks a million! ;D
mp3s of the same song + the fred neil song 'dolphins' but this time sung by panama can be found here:
http://www.panamaredmusic.com/choicebuds.htm
it all goes round and round :)
Bottom Dollar is F***ing great!!!
I keep promising my wife I'll switch the PC off but I need that fix!
Cheers CC, like I said - You Da Man!
I need to add Waylon Live Expanded Edition to my Waylon List!
My wife & I just cooked some Johnsonville hotdogs listening to Waylon...does life get any better?
See, this is where I was having difficulty. I didn't include any of the Townes, Guy, Steve Earle, John Prine dudes... Even though I think they're legendary, I guess I was thinking of more the earlier dudes.
I like Billie Joe, too, although, I've never been able to get into him as much.
I love Kris Kristofferson. And I also love Willie.
Country Ladies:
Emmy Lou Harris is my favourite. I love her work with Gram, her 70's solo albums & her work in the 90's/00's too.
Her cover of Steve Earle's Goodbye is one of the most beautiful ever + she is SO hot!!!
No wait, Patsy Cline is my favourite!!!
I don't have much by her & need to get more. Her cover of Willie's Crazy could well be my favourite song of all time.
Tammy Wynette's Stand by your man is one of my favourite albums. It's an album that I can listen to from start to finish without wanting to skip a single track. What a voice!
The only Loretta Lynn CD I have is her latest with Jack White which is very good. I need to get some more!
QuoteSee, this is where I was having difficulty. I didn't include any of the Townes, Guy, Steve Earle, John Prine dudes... Even though I think they're legendary, I guess I was thinking of more the earlier dudes.
I quite agree - write about whom ever you want!!!
Townes should be considered a legend if he isn't...maybe he's a cult legend? I've said before, if you're thinking of buying some Townes go straight out & buy his 4CD boxset because once you have one you'll want them all!
Steve Earle is the Man!!!
I love the Hard Way best & Train A Comin'
I saw him play a solo acoustic show in London many moons ago about the time of the Hard Way. He was going through his serious drug addiction phase then but still put on an amazing show!
Not a legend but should be - I'm a big fan of Steve Young (friends with Townes, Guy & Steve & featured briefly on Heartworn highways).
Wrote Lonsome Onry & Mean, one of my favourite singers.
I think Dale Watson is a bit of a Texas Legend.
They're not legends but I also love Mickey Newbury (good friend of Kris's, wrote American Trilogy) Gary Stewart, Gene Watson...I could go on forever!
Hank Snow, Hank Snow, Hank Snow
Quote
They're not legends but I also love Mickey Newbury (good friend of Kris's, wrote American Trilogy) ...
good call. I bought the Mickey Newbury boxset a while ago and was very impressed.

Same here - I picked it up in Nashville earlier this year.
To be honest I haven't listened to all the CDs yet but love what I've heard especially Frisco Mabel Joy!
CC - I'm thinking you might like this CD.
Very nice country/folk :)

Hey Meg,your choices of country music legends are way cool! I also like Dwight Yoakam alot since he is keeping the spirit of traditional country music alive and kicking. Also I'll mention again about local Louisville artist Johnny Berry and The Outliers. www.johnnyberrymusic.com. Another artist who is trying to keep good ole honky tonk music alive. Give a listen to the song "Every Time I Turn Around".It is pure country .Also he gets to open for Dwight here in Louisville on Nov 18.

Junior Brown is an amazing guitar player and always put a fabulous show. He calls his creation a "Guitsteel".
I love Stompin' Tom.
Riny, it's hard to find her old albums on cd, the way they were released. If you can find Fist City, that's a good one. But mostly, it's collections of "greatest hits" and stuff. I would look for a collection of her and Ernest Tubb, and if there's a collection anywhere that has her singing her own sons, I would go with that. (The 20th Century Masters is pretty good - I have that, and I like it okay.)
Johnny Cash
Merle Haggard
Glen Campbell
Waylon Jennings
Willie Nelson
Hank Williams
Hank Williams Jr.
Hank Williams III
Junior Brown
Buck Owens
Roy Clark
shit, anyone from Hee Haw
I forgot to mention the man that helped start it all: Jimmy Rogers.
The Carter Family needs some serious props too!
QuoteI also like Dwight Yoakam alot since he is keeping the spirit of traditional country music alive and kicking.
I quite agree! Anyone unsure of Dwight's talent needs to buy dwightyoakamacoustic.net right away.
It's like a greatest hits Album but re-recorded with just him & his guitar & the songs are just fantastic!

Any Michael Nesmith fans?
Something of a cult legend for me & certainly very famous due to his time in the Monkees.
I bought a Monkees box set a few years back & was very surprised & impressed by Mike's country solo stuff from the 70's.
Amazon.co.uk has a couple of 2for1 CDs:
Magnetic South/Loose Salute & And the Hits Just Keep on Comin'/Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash are both excellent.
Listen to tracks like Nine Times Blue, Calico Girlfriend, Listen To The Band, Some Of Shelly's Blues & If I Ever Get To Saginaw Again & thank me later!
Alright folks, I need some country guidance.
I only own the following 3 country albums:
Willie Nelson - Stardust
Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
What other stone-cold classics should I add to my wish-list?
Can I go again? ;)
You need some Johnny Cash - both of his prison recordings are essential:

Townes Van Zandt

had to get some of his work after watching that.

I'm so jealous!!! I was lucky enough to see Billy Joe Shaver in a tiny little club in London a few years ago. One of the best shows I've ever seen, the music was amazing & Billy Joe made everyone laugh between songs with his stories. Hope you have a good time EC, let us know when you get back.

Well it was pretty special. He's a big flirt, but I will say that the man gives a genuine and heartfelt hug. And as he was instructing us that it's not usually a good idea to do heroin - maybe once or twice to try it, but don't go over the edge (!!!), I was thinking about his life, or at least what I know of it. Talk about some tragedy. I think somebody took a picture so if I ever see it, I'll post. He's pretty funny. Romi Meyes opened for him, and she's quite lovely (another Canadian, she's from Winnipeg, pretty much full on country). There aren't so many guys like BJS anymore, maybe. And the man can dance.
Yeah he definitely ran into some bad luck over & over again didn't he?
& you got to meet him? That's so cool!
nice. Shaver is the real deal.
which reminds me of this article by Dave Pilot, it actually mentions both Billy Joe Shaver and My Morning Jacket as bein outlaw music.
http://panamaredmusic.com/essays/outlawmusic.html
I love Hank Snow. And the Leon Russell album Hank Snow's Back, where he records country classics. Pretty much the usual suspects, Ithink Freddy Fender has a killer voice, but for me noone tops Ol' Watasha, Waylon epitomizes what country is supposed to be. Listening to Waylon Live right now!

I'll have to go look, but I have a double-disc live album of him somewhere in Texas and some sort of 'greatest hits' comp.
Jeez no mention of Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Jimmy Rodgers, Chet Atkins, or Glen Campbell yet? Horrors! ;) I must profess my undying love for Hank (and Hank Jr.), Waylon, Willie, Kris, Johnny (& June), Patsy, Loretta, Bob Wills as well...

Live @ The Old Quarter? Excellent live album if that's the one you've got!
My advice is go straight out & buy the Texas Troubadour box set. If you don't feel like splashing out then look out for High, Low And In Between & The Late Great Townes Van Zandt as a 2 for 1.

lots of greats in this thread!
one of my all time favorites is Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.
His GP/Grievous Angel and the Flying Burrito Brothers are classic.

From allmusic:
http://blog.allmusic.com/2007/10/29/in-tribute-porter-wagoner/
Other country stars of the '60s shone brighter while other artists were more influential, but no other country singer captured the sound and style of Nashville in the '60s like Porter Wagoner. He had been a fixture in Music City since the mid '50s, after his single "A Satisfied Mind" went to number one, but the '60s was Porter's decade as he racked up Top 10 singles — "Misery Loves Company," "Green Green Grass of Home," "Skid Row Joe," "The Cold Hard Facts of Life" — and, more importantly, he began his long-running television program The Porter Wagoner Show in 1960. On that show, he cut a striking figure in his flamboyant Nudie suits and, along with his appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, he displayed a taste for both cornball kitsch and hard country, with the kitsch slightly overshadowing his excellent traditional country thanks in no small part to his flair for the dramatic, as evident on his classic album covers and melodramatic hits like 1969's "The Carroll County Accident." By the time "The Carroll County Accident" reached number two on the country charts, he had switched out his old duet partner Norma Jean in favor for Dolly Parton. Porter was instrumental in bringing Dolly her stardom and once she left Wagoner and the show behind, it often seemed that the mainstream press suggested his only major contribution was launching Parton's career — a ludicrous suggestion, of course, as he had a formidable legacy of his own. Nevertheless, the fact that his biggest hits captured the feeling of the decade so well, it was hard for latter generations to hear the excellence of his best music.
Fortunately, Wagoner — who passed away on Sunday, October 28, at the age of 80 after a battle with lung cancer — did live to see his reputation get restored, as he released a final album called Wagonmaster this past June. Produced by Marty Stuart and released on Anti, Wagonmaster was a pure, straightahead country album that captured his essence the way his Nashville records didn't, but even those are aging well, as evidenced by Omni's recent release The Rubber Room, a 29-track compilation of his strangest '60s and '70s sides, suggesting that there was much more to Wagoner than Nudie suits. But those Nudie suits have their appeal too, and anyone brought on board with either of these two recent releases may be able to better hear how good those big mainstream hits of the '60s were, best heard on the 2002 comp RCA Country Legends. And anybody that hasn't spent time with Porter could use any of these three discs as a starting point — they're all different, to be sure, but they'll all build an appreciation for a country singer whose enormous popularity strangely enough tended to masquerade his achievements and made him somewhat underappreciated. (Further recommended listening: Omni, who released The Rubber Room, has also recently released a Norma Jean compilation called I Guess That Comes from Being Poor, which contains all of her 1972 LP of the same name and the 1968 LP Body and Mind, plus several other cuts.)
Played some Porter this afternoon, which lead me to Dolly, who then had me playing some Tammy. Sometimes nothing but classic country hits the spot.
These CDs have gotten me all excited about Xmas - I have heaps of country Xmas CDs (Johnny, Willie, Merle, Tammy, Emmy etc) :D

Legend has it that Billy Joe Shaver held a gun to Waylon's head @ one of Willie's 4th of July BBQs & told him he
had to record his songs or he'd pull the trigger ;)
This is one of Waylon's best, if you're going to buy the CD then look out for the UK version that has it with Lonesome Onry & Mean as a 2 for 1.
Speaking of The Highwaymen, the latest issue of Mojo has a rare interview with Kris Kristofferson.

Also have to love Bob Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" and anything Gram Parsons touched.
Very nice mix Prom King!!! Did you go for the live version of Lonesome, On'ry & Mean from Waylon Live? Great, great song! Are you are fan of Steve Young who wrote the song? Very underrated artist IMO...
Woah 666 :o
Cowboy Junkies and in particular their album Trinity Sessions, deserves some big props. That particular release helped kick-start the alt-country movement. Without it, Ryan Adams and Wilco (amongst many many others) would have sounded a hell of a lot different.
I've officially fallen head over (cowboy boot) heels for Steve Earle's Guitar Town. Where should I go next?
QuoteI've officially fallen head over (cowboy boot) heels for Steve Earle's Guitar Town. Where should I go next?
That's a bit of a tough one as none of his other albums sound much like Guitar Town. Maybe Copperhead Road, Train A Comin or I Feel Alright?
Exit O, the album that followed Guitar Town isn't as good (i had it on cassette years ago, don't have it any more) Copperhead Road is great, it's a little more 'rock' than Guitar Town but maybe it's the closest to his debut?
I really like The Hard Way, where Steve tried to be the boss for one album. A lot of fans don't like it but it's one of my favourites, maybe because it was my first Steve Earle album? He changed his style after The Hard Way, having got clean in prison.
Train A Comin & I Fell Alright, the 2 albums that followed soon after his release are both excellent.
Didn't have any Bobby Bare CDs until a couple of months back but I'm trying my best to catch up now...what a voice!!!
This superb 2for1 is my fav so far:

New Johnny Cash Documentary Oct 24th Biography Channel/DVD Oct 28
From SteveEarle.com:
Just like the rebellious rocker Johnny Cash, Steve has inspired a nation of millions to use its voice for change. So it comes as no surprise that Steve is one of the many interviewed guests featured on Johnny Cash's America, a two-hour documentary premiering on the Biography Channel on Thursday, October 23 at 9 pm EDT with an encore on Friday, October 24 at 10 pm EDT.
The documentary features an unprecedented wealth of rare material, including never-before-seen footage and photos, and proves that the truth about people is always more entertaining than the fiction. Johnny Cash's America will be released on CD/DVD on October 28 through Sony BMG's Legacy Recordings but if you're in New York City on Friday, October 17, you can check out a screening of this documentary at the Paley Center.
QuoteAny Michael Nesmith fans?
And The Hits... is great, just him and the pedal steel I've suprised many people when I put those 2 for 1 disc's on! If you haven't already check out Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band stuff.
Gram Parsons is it for me, would have never gotten into MMJ without Gram!

You should download Rick Nelson Live In Concert on Amazon.com, it's the first show's with the SCB at the Troubadour in 1969. It's been out of print on cd for years!
It's amazing how all that great "country-rock" stuff from the early 70's is unknown today!

Gene Clark's 1971 platter, with its stark black cover featuring his silhouette illuminated by the sun, was dubbed White Light -- though the words never appear on the cover -- and if ever a title fit a record, it's this one. Over its nine original tracks, it has established itself as one of the greatest singer/songwriter albums ever made. After leaving the Byrds in 1966, recording with the Gosdin Brothers, and breaking up the Dillard & Clark group that was a pioneering country-rock outfit, Clark took time to hone his songwriting to its barest essentials. The focus on these tracks is intense, they are taut and reflect his growing obsession with country music. Produced by the late guitarist Jesse Ed Davis (who also worked with Taj Mahal, Leon Russell, Link Wray, and poet John Trudell, among others), Clark took his songs to his new label with confidence and they supported him. The band is comprised of Flying Burrito Brothers' bassist Chris Ethridge, the then-Steve Miller Band-pianist (and future jazz great) Ben Sidran, organist Michael Utley, and drummer Gary Mallaber. Clark's writing, as evidenced on "The Virgin," the title cut, "For a Spanish Guitar," "One in a Hundred," and "With Tomorrow," reveals a stark kind of simplicity in his lines. Using melodies mutated out of country, and revealing that he was the original poet and architect of the Byrds' sound on White Light, Clark created a wide open set of tracks that are at once full of space, a rugged gentility, and are harrowingly intimate in places. His reading of Bob Dylan's "Tears of Rage," towards the end of the record rivals, if not eclipses, the Band's. Less wrecked and ravaged, Clark's song is more a bewildered tome of resignation to a present and future in the abyss. Now this is classic rock.
Totally Agree!!! White Light and the first Dillard & Clark are his best solo stuff! This is a really good book about the whole c.r. era, I alway's go back to it to find artist's and album's to check out!

Sorry didn't realize it was out of print, should have also mentioned that the same author also wrote a great book about Gene Clark called Mr. Tambourine Man- and has a new book about the Flying Burrito Brothers out soon written with Chris Hillmen
I have Steve Young's best of cd- like it a lot... the other 2 I will put on my list to check out! Thanks for the info.
There are times when this man & only this man will do. Today was one of those days...a couple of songs in & I'm feeling better already...Willie Nelson is a living legend, the last of a dying breed & I love his music dearly!

Yep, actually Randy Miesner the orginal Eagles bassist was in Poco before Schmit. He left to go with Rick Nelson's band and Schmit replaced him in Poco and eventually the Eagles. It's kind of confusing but they are part of the California country-rock stuff along with Gram, Gene, Nesmith and the others.

I bought Heartworn Highways (before Be here To Love Me was released) for Townes Van Zandt. It was amazing to see footage Townes (I love the bit where he pretends to fall into the rabbit holes) but I also fell in love with this man after watching it the first time:

"I was born in Bessemer, Alabama, so I have never had it easy, but thanks to Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline, Hank Snow, and other great recording artists, I was able to survive the hot sun. This was because when I heard their music, John, the good old mule, and I could plow another row. It was like hitting the wall getting the second wind. I love country music and will always keep it in my heart"
