Just discovered that Rufus Wainwright is playing my city next Jan! He's been on my list for a while now, can anyone recommend a good starting point?
Also, after years & years of ignoring the tiny little man I feel it's about time I had thought about adding some Prince to my collection. Any fans? Best albums? One's to avoid, that sort of thing...

Blues is one section of my music collection that's seriously lacking, and you appear to be the resident blues expert --- can you recommend me some stone-cold-classics to start with?
i tried to post this last night, then the site went down.
rufus' debut album is one of my favourites of all time. the rest pale in comparison and are a bit hit and miss. string arrangements by van dyke parks and produced by jon brion. 'nuff said. ;)

I've got an excellent Mojo Special somewhere that lists their Top 100 Blues Albums, I'll have to see if I can find it...
i'm not a blues expert at all, and i admit that my collection is seriously lacking in blues. i can still strongly recommend muddy waters and john lee hooker. fucking crazy good. :)

Thanks guys! Any idea what's a good Howlin' Wolf album to start with (I don't do 'best ofs')?

I don't usually buy or recommend 'best ofs' but sometimes it is the best way to get a comprehensive overview of an artists work, especially older artists who A: have put a shit load of CDs out & B: a lot of their best work is deleted/unavailable.
Chess 'best ofs' are very reliable, I always go with the Rhino compilation when I'm buying oldies & Trojan is an excellent label for reggae.
I was just looking at the tracklisting on this 2 for 1, I'd say this is your best bet:

Strangly this is the only Blues CD I own. It is a great slice of guitar blues. Hendrix doing some of his own in a bluesy way and covers. Check out Once Had A Woman...WOW.

That's a good album but Red needs to buy Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love & Electric Ladyland before he even considers getting that one.
& like any serious CD collector he also needs to win the lottery!!! ;D
Yeah, I think a few best-of's will treat me well for the blues, I've got a few compilations here and there, but I just prefer to get obsessive and spend too much money when I discover a new artist.
I'll get on those Jimi albums soon I promise, they're sitting on my Amazon wish-list as I type this.
About that winning the lottery thing... ;D
Have been reading lots of great things about Doug Martsch.

It's hard to go wrong with Built To Spill, they're all pretty damn good. I think the only one I don't have is the first album. I think Keep It Like A Secret might be the way to go but you could really start anywhere.

QuoteI'll be going to the city on the weekend and am looking to pick up a Kinks album. What's a good one to start with?
The Village Green Preservation Society is widely considered their best album but it's quite different from the singles you'll have heard like All Day And All Of The Night & You Really Got Me.
Be careful in the city Red. I have a 'friend' who always comes back with a shitload of CDs every time he goes to 'the city' ;)
I think I'm just about ready to 'do' Billy Bragg...

Did someone mention the blues?
I like Delta Blues best of all, but I can recommend some modern blues and some classic discs that I feel are must owns. NOTE: There are good compilations/series out there covering the various blues genres like Delta, Chicago, Urban, Country etc... Look got them. Also, refer to All Music Guide online. It's invaluable for blues and everything else. This is a start, off the top of my head. Ask me again more specific questions about blues and I'll post more recommendations.

And here's some essential albums that I always recommend to friends not rooted in the blues:
Buddy Guy's best, nastiest and jammiest blues album from a few years back (it's Buddy doing North Misssissippi delta blues)
Junior Kimbrough from North Mississippi with his scary trance blues (and a huge influence of the North Mississippi Allstars and The Black Keys)

Another North Mississippi great, R.L. Burnside with his breakthrough album

Robert Nighthawk is another scary electric bluesman and this is a masterpiece

Alvin Youngblood Hart's folk blues Big Mama's Door

QuoteThe Jam? Heard "Town Called Malice" for the very first time today.
Compact Snap, the Jam's best of, is a good place to start. It's got all the good ones on it.
For the studio albums, All Mod Cons is their third (and for me joint best) album - Weller breaks away from the Mod-revivalist leanings of the first two. He starts to really develop as a songwriter, too. "Down in the Tube Station..." has the line: "They smelled of pubs, and Wormwood Scrubs, and too many right-wing meetings."
The fourth album, Setting Sons, is a narrative of Britain at the time Thatcher came to power. This is another fave, with Eton Rifles, Private Hell etc etc. Very, very good.
Either of those two would do, but I'd go with All Mod Cons as it probably has the wider range (English Rose is very un-Jam - only Weller and an acoustic). Or just buy both.

Any U2 other than The Joshua Tree (which I already own) worth buying?
Unforgettable Fire & Actung (sic?) Baby are both essential.
i always liked War
i've got nearly all of their albums - joshua tree being my favourite....
achtung baby - i looooove this album. this & JT made me fall in love with U2. for me both albums are about love, but also reflect bono's expanding interest in the world - joshua tree is i think more expansive and spacious, where as i think (as a whole) AB has more colour but sonically feels a bit more huggy somehow. now that i think about it to me JT is very much an 80s record, while AB has a more 90s sound.
boy - i was watching an irish film over the weekend (intermission v good) - and i will follow played right at the opening - their early albums are quite different to the later ones, this one in particular is very much less mature (but they were only 19 / 20 at the time) a lot more rashly optimistic, more rough... still quite late 70s sound ... probably not everyones cup of tea, but worth the listen
unforgettable fire - get the doco as well if you can. interesting contrast to rattle & hum where the band & bono are obviously more interested in their image.
i actually like rattle & hum as well, but i think its a better listen after you've watched the documentary.... makes a bit more sense
as far as rufus wainwright - i'd start with poses, which is what i did. i still haven't heard his debut, have been meaning to buy it. i've got want one & want two, they're definitely more elaborate and baroque, but good... i think poses is still my favourite
Aphex Twin? I've got The Richard D. James album and it scares the hell out of me (I mean that in the best possible way ever).
QuoteAphex Twin? I've got The Richard D. James album and it scares the hell out of me (I mean that in the best possible way ever).
everything but DRUKQS. i mean that in the most serious way. you have the best complete album already IMO, so first thing i'd recommend is COME TO DADDY EP. it will scare you just as much if not more. you should also look in to squarepusher if you like aphex. i know squarepusher gets lumped in with aphex as a quasi-rip off, but he's much more than that.
David Bowie anyone?
I'm ready to be shot down in flames, but for me:
Hunky Dory
Ziggy
Aladdin Sane
Diamond Dogs

1- Ziggy Stardust
2- Hunky Dory
3- Station to Station
4- Aladdin Sane
5- Scary Monsters
6- Heroes (w/ Brian Eno)
7- Low (w/Eno
and Robert Fripp)
8- Pin Ups

Cheers Tombo!
Don't have anything by Soft Machine. A friend lent me Shleep a while back & he's been on my list ever since + I adore his cover of shipbuilding. Read a great interview with him recently & decided it was time to buy some albums.

QuoteThe Pixies?
Sorry I missed this, I've posted on the greatness of the Pixies many times before. Start with Doolittle (tied with Afghan Whigs' Gentelmen as my favorite album of all time). If you don't like Doolittle, stop and seek medical attention or check into rehab and then listen to it again.
After that I'd go straight to the end and get Trompe Le Monde - their highly underrated and final effort. Maybe our European friends can advise us as to why they couldn't get with this album - "This ain't no planet of sound..." Then the early stuff (Surfer Rosa, Come on Pilgrim) and end with Bossanova.
Don't get me wrong, I love Bossanova and you will too, but it's an acquired taste. There are also tons of EP's and the like floating around that are essential for freaks like me. And I think that there are more tribute albums at this point than actual albums. Best tribute ever was Sugar's "Good Idea" on Copper Blue. It wasn't a Pixies song, but Bob Mould wrote it as a nod to the Pixies and it's right on point.

I've listened to alot of stuff from Led Zeppelin to Modest Mouse to Peter Bjorn and John, the velvet underground. I don't know what to get next though. I tried listening to a Captain Beefheart album and it's pretty cool but his voice is a bit bothersome. If you're not into live albums, maybe an extensive compilation?
There should be plenty.
Portrait Of A Legend is a very good best of.
thanks to both of you
The Cure?
Funny story: Back when I was in grade 6 we had a split class with the grade 5's. I had the biggest crush on the intern who was helping my teacher. She loved the Cure and was gorgeous. I was very good in math and one day she asked me if I'd like to teach the grade 5's for her that day, my bumbled response "I love you". I think I meant to say "I'd love to", but who knows anyways. All in all, I think about her every time I think about how I have no Cure albums.
Disintegration, K.

can any one advise me on Spacemen 3, Beat Happening or Modern Lovers...?
I'd also like some oldies stuff... something like The Crystals or Mary Wells or Otis Redding.

I can speak to Otis. This is what you want. 3 discs with just tons of awesomeness and the 4th disc is all live. It might be a bit pricey, but it is SO worth it. You will not be disappointed.

Silver Jews?
They're palying here in may. I really like the stuff on their myspacepage. American Water got 9.9 at pitchfork (ok it's pitchfork... :-/). But is that a good record to start?
You bet it is! :D
Their newer one, Tanglewood Numbers, is also very good.
Alright. I think I'm going to order AW. I like the American Water song on their site.
You're welcome Face. I hope you enjoy Otis. Everyone should.
Stevie Wonder's earlier work.
I'm talking songs like For Once In My Life, Never Had A Dream Come True, Uptight etc. This will probably require a compilation? Anything to recommend?

what's the deal with his dislike for surf music anyway? i've heard that before, plus something in a song he knocks surf music.

I just bought "Stevie Wonder: At The Close Of A Century"
LP-sized 4-disc box, with a hundred pages of exquisite pictures and essays.
50% off at a local record shop sale. What a find :)
Yes it has We Can Work It Out, and it does not have Ebony and Ivory!
Money well spent Sir!

Liege & Lief and
Unhalfbricking. Maybe Liege to start with? But like I said, I love them both :)
I've fallen for Stereolab's Chemical Chords, how about their older material?
Superchunk
Buckethead
Sadly have neither in my collection. I know there are many Buckethead fans here. I think there are a few Superchunk fans (Soup?)

No Pocky For Kitty is excellent...where the hell is my copy?!!

K, Transient Random Noise Bursts is a decent start, then maybe Cobra and Phases, or Emperor Tomato Ketchup. Haven't heard their latest though...

And, their 2004 release Margerine Eclipse is pretty awesome from start to finish.

No Pocky is great, My first love is Here's Where the Strings Come In. I think it was their technically first "major" release (I could be wrong). Never understood why they never got a wider audience - their sound seemed to fit the times. They have a shit load of EP's, compilations, best of's, and the like - most of which I don't own. I should own more.

Tracy (and any other Sonic Youth enthusiasts): I have EVOL, Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo, and Dirty. Where should I go next?
Where's our friend The Dark? I'm sure he'd have a suggestion.
Stevie Wonder?
I've been listening to a bootleg from '74 and it's been blowing my mind. Time to delve into the man's catalog, I figure.

I would start with Talking Book or Innervisions & then Songs In The Key Of Life.
I know you're not a fan of Best Of's but I recommend picking one up so you don't miss out on all of of his classic early singles like I Was Made To Love Her, Uptight, For Once In My Life, My Cherie Amour, Yester-Me, Yester-You etc

Riiiiiiight here. ;) Check out some of their later albums i.e. Washing Machine, Murray Street, and Rather Ripped. Bad Moon Rising is an acquired taste, but if you're particularly into EVOL, go for it.
Since you have all the great earlier works, get Washing Machine next. The Diamond Sea is mind altering.
After that, Murrey Street, Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped are very Good. A Thousand Leaves is also goodn and NYC Ghost and Flowers isn't too bad.
Thanks gents. :)
