Into The Mystic is one of my fav songs of all time.

Maybe I shouldn't admit that I first heard it on the soundtrack to Corey Feldman/Haim movie?  :-[

I'm sick of a few of the songs like Moondance and And It Stoned Me, but my god Into The Mystic is beautiful. I'll never tire of Caravan either. Astral Weeks and Tupelo Honey are almost as good as Moondance.

ok, well, just so you know, the song that the people i was referring to in the other thread will be singing may or may not be from this album, and it may or may not be one of yours and db's fave songs ever.
just saying.  i should shut up with this winky secret business now.

Astral Weeks is better than Moondance IMO.

Another Van The Man track that kills me is I'll Be Your Lover Too from His Band & The Street Choir.

I have Moondance, Astral Weeks and Veedon Fleece.

If I had to pick a favourite, it'd be Moondance

Thanks for reminding me that I need more Van. That 'Best Of' is just not enough. Although you should all try blasting out Did You Get Healed with the windows open on a sunny day. It's pure bliss.

Maybe have a beer while you're at it  :)

Last night was my first album experience with Van Morrison - and what an experience it was!

Just before midnight I killed all the lights in my room, put my headphones on and queued up Moondance.  Time stopped, memories lingered and then disappeared, and I was transfixed.  What an absolute masterpiece, I spun it once again as soon as I awoke this morning.

I've often heard "Into the Mystic" referred to as one of the greatest songs ever, boy, people weren't yanking my chain.

:)

Oh yeah, this is one of the best albums ever!  I used to listen to this just about every night before going to bed with headphones.  I always skipped the last song, Glad Tidings, because I didn't like that one... ironically, nearly every time I put iTunes on shuffle, Glad Tidings will play.

But man, Moondance and Into the Mystic... it's hard to get better than that.  :)

I used to jam with some bluegrass pickers that would do a "interesting" version of Moondance - I'll never look at Van the same

Anybody know Tupelo Honey, Saint Dominic's Preview & Veedon Fleece are currently unavailable? I only have Moondance, Astral Weeks & His Band & The Street Choir & need some more Van but these 3 are out of print.
Anybody read anything about them being re-released/re-mastered?

Was just talking to a good friend about Van Morrison, thought I'd check to see if Tupelo Honey, Saint Dominic's Preview & Veedon Fleece are up for re-release but had no luck finding them.
They're currently unavailable @ amazon.com, co.uk & hmv.co.jp  :(

Maybe I should email Van the Man himself. I've heard he's quite an approachable fellow  ;)

How did I miss this thread?  There is no other like Van Morrison. (No offense Jim)

I completely wore out the "Blowin' your Mind" album, (I'm talking vinyl) and "Astral Weeks."  Had to save my allowance so I could buy new ones.

The man is a musical genius.  I have been listening to him for 30 years and I'm still not bored.

Moondance is brilliant, not one loser song on it.(In my humble opinion) Of course there is a great song on this album called Crazy Love :exclamation

But there is also:

Into the Music
Best of Van(1970)
Veedon Fleece
It's too Late to Stop Now
Saint Dominics Preview
Tupelo Honey
His Band and Street Choir
Avalon Sunset
Day's Like This
The Best of..........Volume 1(one of my top picks)
The Best of..........Volume 2(another of my faves)
The list goes on and on..................It's too impossible to pick just one!

Van, you are the Man!!!

You are correct, DB, I am a big fan of Van the Man.  As I said before, I wore out the vinyls as a teenager, and by the way, I still have most of them, even though they are
not playable.
When I first heard Van, I didn't know what to think.  There had been so much Elvis(saw all of the movies as a kid, and of course was in love with him!), Beach Boys, and even the Beatles that his sound was so new and unique that I wasn't sure about him.  But his beautiful, poetic lyrics blew me away.
My first album was AstralWeeks and I would say that is still my favorite(although I don't have it on disc).  I also love Moondance and Into the Music. There is no way you can go wrong with anything you get.  The only negative thing I have to say is there are often repeats of songs on some of the albums(Sorry, I'm old school, and I'm reminded of this by my teenage son!).
I'm really happy to see that younger music lovers are finding out about Van and that so many are realizing his genius.
Sorry, you got me going, which is very easy to do when it comes to Van.

Enjoy your discs from rccola.  I begged him for copies, too, so hopefully I will be listening along with you over here!

Veedon Fleece is excellent, quite possibly my 3rd fav Van album after Astral Weeks & Moondance!

Looking forward to St Dominic's due early next year (Jan, I think...)

Veedon Fleece is amazing! Someone turned me on to it last year, and the original CD was out of print, so I bought the re-issue a few months ago. Incredible album. I can SO hear Jim James doing Who Was That Masked Man. Also love Moondance and Astral. Need to also get Common One yet.

BTW, Van's doing two Astral Weeks (entire album) concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in November for a future DVD release.

The remastered CDs sound good. I was hoping for a few more bonus tracks but they were really cheap so I shouldn't complain.

I would love to have remastered copies of Astral Wks & Moondance but I read that Warner Bros own the rights & are involved in a legal battle with Van The Man...

Here are my current rankings:

Astral Weeks
Moondance
Veedon Fleece
Tupelo Honey
His Band & The Street Choir

just saw this!

there should be a thread just for 'into the mystic' one of the greatest songs of all time....VM is such great break-up music, too. i almost never play it when i'm happy. 'crazy love' is probably my second fave VM song.

I think Astral Weeks HAS to be played as a whole--just put it on and let it go :-)--whereas MD can stand up song by song.

DB,  It's good to have you back.  I'm so happy that were able to find the new releases.  Isn't Astral Weeks amazing? and Moondance? and Tupelo Honey? and Veedon Fleece and I could go on and on.  Can you believe that Teo is not a fan of VM?  I can't figure that out, although his brother is a huge fan too.  Anyhoo, good to see you back and still groovin' to Van the Man. :)

The Tupelo Honey album never worked for me. 2-3 good songs, don't care for the rest......seems like filler.

Astral Weeks & Moondance have been remastered and are being reissued on vinyl only for now, with the original mix of Into The Mystic used, complete with tambourine. I think these come out later this month.......at least Moondance does.

Title: Listen to the Lion!!
Post by: Larson on Oct 04, 2008, 10:35 AM
I feel like St. Dominicks Preview isnt getting as much love as I feel it deserves.
It is a amazing album, with a killer title track, some great r&b stuff and of course Van the Mans greatest song ever.....Listen to the Lion.

If you are not familier with Listen to the Lion, its roughly 10 minutes long, full of Van doing his trademark improvising and taking a word and stretching it out and changing it into something amazing. Also he growls like a lion, so its got that going for it.

I do like the version on "Its too late to stop know" better, because the caledonia soul ochestra's horn section really does a good job of keeping up with Van. It it my suggestion that all on the board at least give it a chance.

..........And we sailed, and we sailed, and we sailed...
Away from denmark
Way up to caledonia..........

If you know the song that should make you smile!!

One of my favorite Van moments is him singing Caravan on "The Last Waltz".  He steals the show in my opinion.  I just got a Blu-ray copy of that movie and it is amazing.

Van is the man
