Who's up for a music quiz?
Here's the deal. I'll start the ball rolling, whoever answers correctly gets to post the next question & so on.
You're only allowed one shot at each question. If you get it wrong then you're out until the next question gets posted.
No cheating using the internet. You'll only be lying to yourself if you do & don't forget that God & Satan are watching!
If nobody has the answer in a day or two then whoever posted the question can repost with an A, B, C, D option.
Try to make sure your questions aren't too obscure & we're good to go!
Easy one to start with:
QUESTION No1:
Who gave Bob Dylan the guitar he is holding on the cover of Nashville Skyline?
The Man in Black?
Nice try K but wrong answer.
I think I chose the wrong day to start this thread ;D
Nevermind, things will no doubt pick up on Monday when everyone is back @ work.
Damn, I thought I'd make an easy connection. Johnny Cash just rolled in his grave.
This could be an awful guess but it is a guess and not a google'd guess...
Jerry Garcia gave Dylan the guitar.
Nice try Kory & I wish I could say you're right (what with it being ya B'day!) but that's another wrong answer.
Cheers 4 playing!
Woddy Guthrie? I'm drunk.
Nice try Brian & I wish I could say you're right (what with you being drunk 'n all!) but that's another wrong answer.
Cheers 4 playing!
Someone needs to go wake up aMD ;)
Yeah, he's probably really dissapointed in us right now. Man, that's a good question I like this game, I know Neil Young plays Hank Williams Sr. guitar which was one of the coolest things I've ever heard.
If I can guess again I'd say Donovan? Mabey?
QuoteI know Neil Young plays Hank Williams Sr. guitar which was one of the coolest things I've ever heard.
What are you doing?!! That could have been one of your questions ;D
Check your PMs for the answer (just don't post it here!!!)
Word. You Rule.
i would have gone with Woddy Guthrie, but...Roy Orbison??? i have a second guess but i'll wait.....
Wasn't old Roy Capt, nice try though & thanks for playing!
George Harrison.
I'm going to assume I'm right and ask the next question.
I'll make the next question a little easier:
Question no 2
What was The Band's name before they were The Band?
I think the Band were the Hawks.
QuoteGeorge Harrison.
I'm going to assume I'm right and ask the next question.
I'll make the next question a little easier:
Question no 2
What was The Band's name before they were The Band?
Well played Sir!
Apologies for making the first question quite so difficult, I thought a few more people would have known that one :-[
I remember The Hawks being mentioned in The Last Waltz, I think Greggy could well be right...
QuoteI think the Band were the Hawks.
you are correct, sir. you got a question for us?
Nils Lofgren was in the band Grin.
Name the other guitarist. He doesn't appear on the first album.
(Its easier than Bobs guitar.)
QuoteNils Lofgren was in the band Grin.

(Its easier than Bobs guitar.)
my guess is Neil Young
I'm pretty sure Neil Young produced one of their albums, good guess Tracy.
Tough one...
If Neil Young isn't the right answer then I think we might need an A B C D option for this one Greggy.
a. Ry Cooder
b. Keith Richards
c. Rev Patrick Henderson
d. Tommy Lofgren
I'm going to go with A. Pretty darn sure it's not Kieth.
Have never heard of C or D but something tells me Tommy Lofgren could well be related to Nils? ;)
I'll go with D since I don't think it's keith and that guy has the same last name as nils.
QuoteI'll go with D since I don't think it's keith and that guy has the same last name as nils.
You again aMD!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nils_Lofgren
"After the second album Nils added brother Tom Lofgren to the fold as a rhythm guitarist..."
Has Tom Lofgren done much since Grin Greggy? I've never heard of him.
That said, the only Nils album I have is Silver Lining: http://wm05.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:d9foxql5ldfe
Alright, I'm not sure how difficult this one is so I'll give you all a bit and then make it multiple choice like worddawg.
Question no 4
For whom did Randy Newman write "It's Lonely at the Top"?
okay, here's a hint, it's the same guy Paul McCartney wrote "When I'm 64" for...
Still no idea whatsoever :-[
I don't know the song Lonely At The Top but first thought of Bob Dylan. I know you're a fan but we've already had a BD question so my second thought was maybe not.
No idea who Paul wrote When I'm 64 for but I'm going to take a stab at John Lennon?
nope, sorry.
he didn't sing either of them. He said that his audience wouldn't understand the irony of "It's Lonely at the Top". He was probably right. It's not Elvis, sorry DB.
;D
I going to post this here to help people out.
I've been around the world
Had my pick of any girl
You'd think I'd be happy
But I'm not
Ev'rybody knows my name
But it's just a crazy game
Oh, it's lonely at the top
Listen to the band, they're playing just for me
Listen to the people paying just for me
All the applause-all the parades
And all the money I have made
Oh, it's lonely at the top
Listen all you fools out there
Go on and love me-I don't care
Oh, it's lonely at the top
Oh, it's lonely at the top
It's a great question...now that I know the answer! ;)
A) Wayne Newton
B) Frank Sinatra
C) Jimi Hendrix
D) Paul Simon
B?
QuoteB?
HEY GIRL!!! The next question is all yours B :)
Sweet! Let me think about this for a second.
Ok, What is my favorite guitar solo of all time?
as a hint is it a PJ or MMJ song?
Stranglehold, right? !!!
Ha, It is NOT a PJ OR a MMJ song.
This is one Answer you will NOT be able to find on the internet........I don't think. :-/
*If you find this answer on the internet please let me know, thanks. I want to make sure I'm right*

I thought this would be much harder.
Crap, well it's your turn DB. Nicely Done!!!!
;D
It was on the internet wasn't it?
Sorry, I jumped in a bit quick there ;D
I can be such a f**king child sometimes :-[
OK here's an easy one (I think!) + it's a little more contemporary for the kids!
Question No6
Ian, John, Reni & Mani were the classic line-up of which short-lived band?

Oh, and I have indeed jumped the name-change bandwagon!

Gonna stick with this alias for a while, better get used to it :D
Very clever Serg!
Once again my childish enthusiasm got the better of me :-[
So do you have a question for us?
I just checked on allmusic & T-Bone Burnett was born Joseph Henry Burnett.
...so that's not the right answer? :-?
I'm gonna have to go with 'some old blues legend'
Yep, that's my official answer right there.
shit... shit... i know this one... something with wolf...
howling wolf?
Quotehowling wolf?
Shame on me for not knowing that one! :-[
Looks like it's over to you Meg!
You'll probably have a question for us about The Bangles or Madonna or Hannah Montana or someone like that right?
;) ;) ;)
it is ON, db!
;D
i was out of hannah montana questions, db, so this will have to do... ;)
when saul zaentz purchased fantasy records in 1967, he told the boys of the band "the golliwogs" that they could record a full-length album under one condition: they had to change their name.
what name did they choose?

I don't know the answer to this one as well.

Mmmm, 1967. Long shot: The Turtles?
These questions sure are tough if you don't know the answer.
'67? Golliwogs? I'm gonna have to go with the 2 Live Crew!
Am I right? I'm right aren't I?!
I just ran an internet check, damn these are some good questions! :)
If we ever enter a team in the local pup quiz, we will definitely have the music questions covered!!!

Heh easy.
First question. This score was co-written by Jon Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Demis Roussos and Keith Emerson (of Emerson Lake and Palmer fame). Sadly, these musical geniuses never collaborated again...
Second question. Even easier. Milli Vanilli.
Thanks for providing me the chance to restore my image :)

Maybe Ginger Baker?

Ginger Baker it is Fanatic!
I knew he played on Master Of Reality's Sunrise On The Sufferbus...
OK Fanatic, maybe something a little easier/contemporary to get the kids involved? :)
QuoteGinger Rogers? He's old skool at least.
This thread needs a question!
Serg, I'm pretty sure you meant Ginger Baker, not Ginger Rogers? ;D
Why not give us a question & Fanatic can give us another when he's on line next. Won't hurt to have a couple of questions running at the same time. Whoever is online first can take Question No10.

I sincerely hope no one knows this, so I can amuse myself, and maybe even you, with funny names for the A B C D options!
Hint: it's not Fred Astaire.
No idea whatsoever! But you've actually chosen a very good/relevant question.
Earlier today True mentioned that the question are too difficult but it just so happens that he's a big 'other' Elvis fan & should therefore know the answer!
Let's hope he gets online soon before someone beats him to it (I'm pretty sure Greggy is a Costello fan, better hurry up True!)

Yes he should.
Somewhat related, I also know the real names Elton John and Tupac Shakur. There's apparently a small part of my brain that remembers that kind of stuff. Why does it do that? What's the point? :-?
It's a mystery I guess...

"His full given name is often listed as Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus; however, Aloysius was not one of his names at birth, being added years later, around the time of the release of King of America (typically, it was a tongue-in-cheek gesture, Aloysius being one of the middle names of the character played by doomed English comic Tony Hancock in Hancock's Half Hour)."

Workmen dropped a thin metal plumbing pipe and it hit me on the head and knocked me to the ground. I had a concussion and went to the hospital. Prehaps a common producer? :-/
I can only think Jim O'Rourke. Because I know he does a ton of stuff and he's basically a member of Sonic Youth.
Yeah it's an intriguing one fo sho...
No question from Tombo? Does someone else want to put one out there? Maybe someone who hasn't posted a question yet?
It's a good idea to have a couple on the go at the same time I think.
K, DB, I gotta question, and since i think there was a Stone Roses question earlier...i'll keep that going
Early in the days of the Stone Roses, after quite a lazy streak, their first producer (not our own Mr. Leckie :)) locked the members in the recording studio until they came out with a song. What was the result?
IMO, it's one of the best songs ever.
Not John Leckie? He produced their S/T debut, so the song is pre Stone Roses (the album)?
Maybe I'm confusing myself...
Sally Cinnamon? That's the only song I know that isn't on the album...

tis on the album, it was just recorded before Leckie was on board. early on.
Fools Gold maybe? Wasn't it a b-side from that era?
On the album & it's one of your fav songs?
The Dark has gone for Falls Gold. Nice choice Dark, what a cracking song + it does have a slightly different feel to it.

Here's a lyrical fragment from one of my favorite tunes of all time.
Name the tune and the author.
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up
And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill

Give us a question Mark! :)
I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get The Big C's Stone Roses question too (go back 1 page I think)
On the assumption that I was right, here's a topical (for the board, anyway) series of questions:
1. Who is smashing up their instrument on the cover of London Calling by The Clash?
2. Where was the photo taken?
This one here right here?
Not too sure what you mean by 'the clash' (maybe you were referring to the contrasting pink & green?) but that's Mr. Elvis Aaron Presley 'smashing' things up somewhere like Tupelo, Mississippi.
Cheers for playing folks, I'm off to bed :)

I think Peter Hook produced Elephant Stone (I'd have to check my vinyl to be sure), but that wasn't on the album...
That's where i got confused. It is on the US albums apparently.
One more question please Mark.
Why not ask the folks at home who you bumped into on his way to the toilet at a jacket gig in London last year? ;)
Seriously, I'm off to bed...
I don't know who he was, but he appeared to be enjoying himself. A lot.

1. Who is smashing up their instrument on the cover of London Calling by The Clash?
2. Where was the photo taken?
Clue: It's NOT Elvis Presley, whatever db says.

Heck of a long shot & I could look a fool here but I think it could have been
Led Zeppelin?
Tried to think of famous rock bands on Atlantic & LZ were the first band that popped in to my head.
Dutsy was British, Atlantic signed LZ & their debut was released in '69.
I think the 'new rock' band thing was a hint there too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin#The_early_days_.281968-1970.29
"Atlantic was a label known for its catalogue of blues, soul and jazz artists, but in the late-1960s it began to take an interest in progressive British rock acts, and signed Led Zeppelin without having ever seen them, largely on the recommendation of singer Dusty Springfield."

I can confidently say...no idea whatsoever!
(give me an Elvis question aMD!)
umm. i can take wild stabs at those two:
question 667, dave navarro
question 668, kirk hammet
i probably killed the spellings of those names and showed my ignorance of the music that was popular when I was growing up. Ask me something about music when my dad was growing up and I'll have a better shot at it.

I meant give me another question (& make sure it's one about The King!) ;)
667: you're part there. Dave Navarro replaced the guy that went crazy (i think his exact words were 'tell them I went crazy')
Hint: He quit, Dave Navarro replaced him, he later came back replacing Dave Navarro.

Pretty sure that was Cat Stevens. Think the song was Father And Son.
Anyway, the intros are very similar.

Correct and correct. The melodies and chord structures are also very similiar. According to wikipedia, the lips are paying cat stevens (yusef islam) royalities for the song though they didn't realize the similiarities between the songs until their producer pointed it out. They're both good songs in my book. You're kicking ass chills!

#423 what is the name of the band Jim was in with aaron "dondante" todovich?
#424 what song was featured in the aspen edge commercial?
#425 what venue is on the cover of at dawn?
no peaking on the internet. let's see what you all know.
I'll have a guess at the other two.
#421 is J. Glenn, KC Guetig, and Patrick Hallahan?
#423 is Mont de Sundua?
#421 is correct
#423 is not correct, but you're on the right track.

Question 472
When Kurt Cobain was makeing In Utero he invited Thurston Moore over to hear the songs. What song did Kurt Play for Thurston that had Thurston convinced it should be the first track on the new record. He actually BEGGED Kurt to make it the first track.
Hint: nah, you don't get one yet. I've got two great hints though.
is #423 hotel roy?
good guess, but nope.
come on, peeps, there's only one question left:
#423 what is the name of the band Jim was in with aaron "dondante" todovich?
(I may come up with a few more)
Okay, round two of the MMJ trivia game:
#423 what is the name of the band Jim was in with aaron "dondante" todovich?
#428 what song did the jacket perform for their national television debut? what was the show?
#429 what former band member was Jim's cousin? bonus point: what's his real name?
#430 whats tommy's real name?
#431 Name the drummer on each full-length studio album.
`
#423 Month Of Sundays
#428 One Big Holiday, Late Night With Conan
#429 Johnny Quaid
#430 Thomas Blankenship
#431 TTF Jim James, AD J. Glenn, ISM Pat, Z Pat
good job sleasy. those are all correct.
sorry to be knit-picky about mont de sundua, but that was the name the band took after aaron left the band and since that was my question I could only accept month of sundays. the johnny quaid bonus question is also still alive, that's a tough one, you may not be able to find that one on the internet if you tried.
Pat Swayze?
QuoteHeadliners is the correct answer.
and YES Jim played bass on TTF, as well as every other instrument and sound you hear on the album!
Then why are the other band members listed and their photo on the back of the cd. I have a hard time believing that the rest of the band didn't play on the album

my guess would be because jim didn't want to put myself out front, same reason they're not Jim James and the _____. Is it really that hard to believe? Jim did Chocolate and Ice by himself but the artist name on the album is "my morning jacket". Jim has said in interviews that in the beginning "my morning jacket" was just "me"(Jim). And if you don't trust me, maybe you'll trust Ger, check out what his site has to say about TF:

Some geniuses do everything under the name of the band, John Fogerty at times wrote, recorded, played, and produced 100% of a CCR song. I personally believe AMD because as a musician, one with such a vision, you wouldn't sit around and wait for people to show up to play their part. You would do everything as it hit you. Also since MMJ was an outlet for songs his band couldn't use, alot of that stuff could have been recorded before he even thought about bringing anybody else into a band. If you are a musician yourself you know how it is to have every sound of a song in your head. Why try to communicate that sound in your head to someone else, who better to capture your imagination on tape than you?

I didn't have "proof" of those things either but they have both now been confirmed. maybe when i do have proof you'll disappear just like he did.
btw, I think what LizKing was saying is he liked JJ Gray and Mofro better when they were called Mofro, thus reiterating my point about why Jim recorded TF as "My Morning Jacket" instead Jim James and My Morning Jacket.

Exactly. Billy Corgan played almost everything on Melancholy the Infinite Sadness but he was a big enough ego-maniac to tell everybody that. Jim isn't like that. Choices he's made throughout the band's career shows he's not interested in being front and center and taking all the credit he deserves.
i know i didn't get a question right, but i just found this out, and had to share with someone. ;D
anyway... can you name the band about which the following passage is written?
They were there for a band competition when gunfire rang out between two rival gangs, and in trying to escape, they ran to the same service elevator. Because of their similar musical tastes, they quickly became acquainted. It would take them another two years to form a musical duo, and three years after that they had signed to Atlantic Records and released their debut.

It was earlier than that. Siamese Dream (I've been drinking - excuse the spelling and/or gramiatical errors from here on out) was always rumored to be Billy-only with the exception of Jimmy's amazing drum work. He always shit on D'Arcy and downplayed James Iha. All I know is that I saw them live for the SD tour and the dueling leads between Billy boy and Mr. Iha were amazing - never seen anything else like it. It was like they were finishing each other's sentences. They've never come close since.
That being said, MMJ is clearly Jim's musical vision expressed through great players. Do they not pull it of live? Who cares if he plays the zither or not.

My pleasure Tom (you're my 2nd Four Horsemen convert - Chills was the first!)
I'll see if I can't get that track 'magically' sent off to you sometime later today ;)
thank you so much! if there would be any possible way to magically have access to the entire album, I would be eternally grateful, it looks like the album is a little hard to track down over here...
just realized that request came off a bit needy, and I apologize, as I tend to lose a bit of tact and manners when it gets super late. I would love it if you could find a way to send "The Four Horsemen" over, man. If you've got the resources, I would love to be able to check out the whole album, too, but it looks like I actually can get it on Amazon used. Looks like this is quite a treasured album, though! Some copies are selling for around $30!!
Haha, I didn't think you were rude at all Tom. Unfortunately I don't have the album (666) but I do have a double disc CD that has quite a few tracks from it, which I'm uploading now :)

Got to know them through Pearl Jam's "Timeless Melody" cover.
Quite right Sir!
OK, so we need a question from you & a question from our resident music pub-quiz master Greggy (Wordawg) to get this show back on the road :)
Ok, I've got one on soundtracks.
Name the composers for...
The Untouchables
La Dolce Vita
Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Taxi Driver
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy
From Russia With Love
Batman
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Scarface
Superfly
Congrats if you get 10 out of 10 :)
The Untouchables
La Dolce Vita
Raiders Of The Lost Ark - John Williams
Taxi Driver
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy - Howard Shore
From Russia With Love - John Barry
Batman - Danny Elfman
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Scarface
Superfly - Curtis Mayfield
Knowing what a big fan you are I'm pretty sure one of those will be by Ennio Morricone...I'm guessing Untouchables, Taxi Driver or Scarface?

It's definitely not Scarface (the classic of dated eighties synths!)
So...

Donna Summer - I Feel Love
Pink Panther
Alfred Hitchcock
The Godfather Trilogy
God speed 8-)
danny elfman wrote the theme for Batman but the rest of the music is written by Prince. Maybe I don't understand the question.
Quotedanny elfman wrote the theme for Batman but the rest of the music is written by Prince. Maybe I don't understand the question.
My bad. I knew the theme was by Danny Elfman and just assumed he scored the whole soundtrack. That was a little confusing.
To settle this without a big, ugly fight, I'll give you a point for Prince ;)
If I remember correctly there were actually 2 soundtracks released for the original Batman. Prince did indeed write original songs for the movie, Danny Eflman wrote the score.
QuotePink Panther
Breakfast At Tiffany's -
Henry Mancini
QuoteQuotePink Panther

Correct!
I'm gonna give the remaining three away...
La Dolce Vita is Nino Rota (The Godfather etc.)
Taxi Driver is Bernard Hermann (who also did Psycho, Vertigo etc.)
Scarface is Giorgio Moroder (who produced Donna Summer)
... and make room for a new question.
Bring it on.
I seem to be all out of questions :-/

QuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteYeah, I'm talking about the sy song. I can name a shit ton of songs Kim Gordon sang but I'm really struggeling with this third Kim Deal song. I'm not as familiar with new Pixies.
The two great musical Kims of my youth. One's on Doolittle (my least favorite Pixies song), one's not on any album or ep that I'm aware of. Doolittle's La La Love You was sung by drummer David Lovering - the only other Pixie song not sung by Black/Frank/Charles that I'm aware of.
The one of Doolittle might be Silver.
The unreleased one could be Tony's Theme, which is on the live bonus disc included with Death To The Pixies.
Silver is correct! So there's 4: Gigantic, Into the White, Silver, and.... Bam Thwok (the song they released (internet only) when they reunited - not their finest work and perhaps part of the reason no new album was recorded).
You threw me with Tony's Theme. I knew that she did the speaking part on that song and some of the screaming, but I was pretty sure that Black/Frank/Charles did the singing. See here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lm-SmZB94Y
Yep, you're right. I only remembered the speaking part.

But no...

Your clip is from the reunion. But the recorded version (at least the one I have) is Black/Frank/Charles. Some of the best rock yelling ever. So maybe they both sing it, he fucking SINGS it.

Sorry K I missed this! Great Idea & hopefully it will bring my good man Greggy out of hibernation ;)
The rules are simple (for anyone new to the thread) if you get a question right then please give us a new one. If you're 100% sure you've got the right answer then there's no need to wait for confirmation. Try not to make your questions too obscure, if nobody gets the answer after a day or 2 then please give an A,B,C,D option. & no cheating obviously!
Question No.1 Which one of these artists/bands didn't play Woodstock?A. Janis Joplin
B. The Band
C. Jefferson Airplane
D. The Who
E. Canned Heat
F. Joan Baez
G. Sly & the Family Stone
H. Joni Mitchell
I. Richie Havens
J. CCR
Question No.2 Who opened Woodstock?Question No.3 Everyone knows that Jimi Hendrix closed the festival, what song did he close his set with?A. Hey Joe
B. Fire
C. Purple Haze
D. The Star Spangled Banner
E. Hear My Train A Comin'
Question No.4 Which artist/band's manager said this regarding why he/she/they didn't play? "We were asked to do Woodstock and (name of record label) were very keen, and so was our US promoter, Frank Barcelona. I said no because at Woodstock we'd have just been another band on the bill."
That should keep you busy for a little while :)
Question No.5 In What Year Did The Festival Take Place?
Okay, I think I have most of these
1) Joni Mitchell
2) Richie Havens - Played for three hours because none of the other artists had made it to the venue. they told him to play one more and he made up "Freedom" on the spot, the song would become his most popular ever
3) Star Spangled Banner --> Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
4) Rolling Stones (that's a guess)
5) 1969

Forgot to mention in the rules above, you're only allowed 1 shot @ each question.
You got a question or 3 for us aMD?
I always thought (like amd) Hendrix closed with Voodoo Chile/Star Spangled Banner.
As this is apparently not the case I'm gonna guess Hey Joe .
Another guess for nr 4, The Kinks?

I stumbled upon the answer to nr 4 as well!
1) Who did the Hollies write CarrieAnn for?
2) Who is Norah Jones father?
3) Name three artists that John Hammond "discovered"? (Two might have to be enough)
Thinking of questions to ask is often more difficult than answering.

3. Yessssss
OK so we need a question from K for Elvis, aMD for The Flaming Lips & Bam Bam for Yes (I'm presuming that's the right answer?)

Dark Side???

Nope. Think shittier.
actually, I think Hanna Montana passed them all just this week. :o
DB's garth brooks response made me do some research. I was thinking of the best selling record in the US, I guess I should be asking worldwide since this is an international forum. either way, nobody has guessed it yet.
Haha, the sort of question that causes lots of fights & disputes ;)
Thriller is still the best selling album ever by a long shot. 104 million sold

Do you seriously hate The Eagles? I sometimes wonder when people say that if it's just out of respect for the Dude. I have all of their studio albums (except for The Long Run) & never grow tired of hearing Hotel California (the song & the album!)

Cool !!! 8-)
Yes I hate the eagles. They're not completely awful but I NEVER find myself thinking, "I'd love to hear some eagles right now". I said in reference to the dude but i have always thought they were awful.
This one still needs an answer:

That pretty much should be everyone's answer in regards to the Eagles. I'm not sure what's worse, them or listening to a knife and fork scrapping on a plate.
I'm genuinely surprised by everyone's hatred for The Eagles.

One of my fav Willie songs!!! Nice question Serg :)
Me And PaulIt's been rough and rocky travelin',
But I'm finally standin' upright on the ground.
After takin' several readings,
I'm surprised to find my mind`s still fairly sound.
I guess
Nashville was the roughest,
But I know I said the same about them all.
We received our education
In the cities of the nation, me and Paul.
Almost busted in Laredo,
But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose,
But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave,
Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes.
And at the airport in Milwaukee,
They refused to let us board the plane at all,
They said we looked suspicious,
But I believe they like to pick on me and Paul.
I guess Nashville was the roughest,
But I know I said the same about them all.
We received our education
In the cities of the nation, me and Paul.

Don't know if he's god, but i'm getting way into him. I still can't believe he's from hamilton Ohio and I didn't know that/him until recently!
I just haven't been checking this thread that much - I suck at classic rock trivia. I would've got it without the clues - Frank Black, Bob Mould, and Greg Dulli are on my Rushmore of music (I guess I need a fourth - Jim James as long as Evil Urges rocks).
The very cool thing about Dulli is that he took some of the money he initially made and invested in music clubs - some are in Cincinnati I think. He makes a very nice living off of these clubs so he's always been able to make the music that he wants to make without the pressures of having to make an album that sells well. His music always just clicked with me. I vividly remember buying Gentlemen the day it came out and still listen to it often 13 or 14 years later.

Bob Marley is quite right! Good guess with Frank but not the right answer. Number 3 is one of your recent listening favs ;)
I guess Frank Zappa for number 1, he sho nuff wrote a lotta tunes.
So close (kind of!) but not quite right ;D
(I'll PM you Cripsy)
Ha - got ahead of myself - or behind, not quite sure :D
is Zappa the answer for number three? (if not then it must be Dulli, those are the two guys I'm obsessed with these days). I really want to know the answer to number one since I am drawn to prolific songwriters with attitudes (kinda afraid it's wayne newton though).

this might have been on VH1 Classics before that song came out--but they said REDBONE with 'come and get your love' so i won't having people guess if i'm not sure--

Jeez! Guess I need to be more diligent reading replies. Looks like Redbone was was Latino though - maybe I can get partial credit with Blackfoot having a Native American founder and a couple top 40 songs?

The White Stripes - The White Stripes
Mr Scruff - Keep It Unreal
QuoteQuoteHappy Mondays was Factory. I think. Right?
Manchester's finest Factory Records is indeed right [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Now I have to think of a question.
QuoteQuoteQuote
What record labels were they originally released on?
Soundgarden - Louder Than Love
AM Records. I'm pretty sure it wasn't SST because they were the first "grunge" band to be released on a major label no?
Keeping with the Soundgarden theme, who was their first drummer?
A&M is right! Their debut EP was on Sup Pop & their debut album on SST (I think!)
There's no fooling you WB ;)
There was someone before Matt Cameron? No idea...
Chris Cornell was the original drummer.
He was doing drumming/singing duties before they got Scott Sundquist, then Scott left and Matt came along.

Gawd I hope they reunite. I knows Matt's kinda busy right now tho'...
Combo question:
Who (famous musician obviously) gave Billy Gibbons one of his guitars, what color was it, and what was the name of Gibbons' band that played the opening spot for same musician (in Texas)?
