Title: Am I the only 50+ MMJ fan????
Post by: mojo on Jan 31, 2009, 10:21 PM
Wow, this is a lonely adventure.   I LOVE the music of MMJ.  The first MMJ cd I purchased I listened to four times in a row, I couldn't get enough. I saw their show live at Bonnaroo '08 and it was incredible.  But this is the deal....I haven't found anyone in my age range that knows this music or is interested in expanding their horizons in music.
If you are a product of the wonderful music of the sixties and still enjoy great music, I'd love to hear your thoughts re: MMJ.

Tracy's 50+. But as far as I know, before you he was the only one. I turned my dad into an MMJ fan so that's another one, but he doesn't post on here.

My Dad (70 this year) is an Elton John fan so I played him Jim's cover of Rocket Man. As soon as Jim started singing my Dad said something like "bloody 'ell he's got some reverb on that!"  ;D

Doesn't quite make my Dad a fan though, does it?

My gorgeous, very cool husband is 53 and he is an MMJ fan.  He has spent the last 2 weeks loading live shows on my ipod.  GD I love this man, and not just because he shares my MMJ addiction.

And yes, I'll be an MMJ fan when I'm 50.  It'll be a while til I'm there.

Funny about your Dad, love that.
Other artists....I'm a die hard Pearl Jam fan.  My daughter & I travel to see several shows every tour.  Recent bands that I'm enjoying are Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes.  I received the BEST birthday gift ever from my daughter this past year....MP3 loaded with over 400 songs.   I live in the Caribbean where rock is not the music of choice for many so having the MP3 loaded with great music has certainly enhanced my life!

48 this year. I'm always searching for good music which is how I arrived here, and my user name!

Funny how some folks are so closed minded when it comes to music.

I will be 51 in March and crazylove is 57. She was second row back for most of Louisville and fell in love with JJ when he sang "Look at You" while standing next to his aunt as she explained what the song was about. Yesterday, I was able to watch her initial reaction to "Dear Wife" and then enjoy her playing it over and over. I have seen the band seven times with a couple of front row Bonnaroo's to my credit. We are in deep until the end...

only 48 here, but love MMJ and having seen several live shows last year, and MMJ was one of the more mature crowds I saw.   Death Cab for Cutie was like high school (hell maybe even junior high),  North Mississipi All Stars was like "Dude, where's my car?", Indigo Girls was like sisters of NOW unite, John Prine was like "hey man, pass me that doob", Robert Randolph and the family was like cheerleading camp, Sheryl Crow was like a strip bar, Willie Nelson was like hillbilly hell, Steve Earle was like brainiacs are us, and The Drive By Truckers were like confederate beer drink'in brothers on 'cid, and Widespread Panic was like glow stick X booby suprise.

Man, I never wrote it down but what a great frigg'in year I had.  See you at the Rock Show.

My dad (54) likes My Morning Jacket, too.  He was up a few years ago for a visit, and after hearing a couple of Jacket songs (if I remember correctly, I played Masterplan and Rocket Man...then Golden) he said, "It reminds me of singing in a grain bin.  Have you ever sang in a grain bin?"  He grew up on a farm and said he used to sing while he was shoveling corn or beans because he liked the reverberation.  I told him they used to record in a grain bin and he thought that was the neatest thing.

He hasn't seen them...or purchased anything.  But he's listened to just about everything, including the New Year's Eve MSG show, seen Okonokos and watches Elizabethtown occasionally.

I'll get him to a show sometime.

While my mind believes I'm far younger, the calendar says I'm 53.  Ever since I heard Okonokos a few years ago I've been hooked.  For me MMJ brings back to life the excitement of the late 60s and 70s when so many new bands were up and coming and breaking new ground.  Even though I went to high school only blocks from the Fillmore East which hosted the most amazing lineups from 1968-1971, I missed the action and vowed never to do so again.  So, in some ways, I'm reveling in the excitement of watching an incredible band and the genius JJ grow and approach its peak years.
I was in the first few rows for RCMH, DC and Philly this year and, of course, in the pit for MSG.
Hey, if all these musicians can keep on cranking into their 50s, 60s and beyond why can't their fans?
MMJ keeps me young.

Did you see JJ at St. James Church (how appropriate) in London on May 22 of last year?  I ordered my son and future son in law who were over there at the time to go to the show and they loved it.  But they didn't take pictures :(

This was sort of a surprise gig that came out of nowhere - just lucky I was checking the web site regularly.

Does anyone have pix from this show or any tales to tell?

I saw the band at London, Bristol and Nottingham but unfortunately James' show in London was one that I missed..I would be interested in seeing pictures as well.  I've been trying to get my daughter and son into the band, but its an automatic reaction with them to not like anything that I do!

Well good for you for seizing the opportunity to take in 3 of their shows in England.  I don't think I've seen anything posted on the forum about the St. James show - it's almost like it didn't happen.

My family tolerates my obsession with MMJ (most of the time) and my wife, son and future son-in-law like them and have all been to at least one show so I've been able, for the most part, to overcome the generational gap.  My brother, however, is hopeless.

We know there are more of you mature, sophisticated fans out there... hello?

Wow this is weird - my first posting on an internet forum thingy ever and it's on the MMJ website and yes I'm over 50.  See my pics from the Melbourne BDO.  Mine are the ones taken from out front.  First time I ever saw the band, never even heard them before and I was hooked by the first song (which someone mentions somewhere here).  So it was a great day - MMJ and Neil Young.  Won't mention any names but some of the other bands I was looking forward to seeing may have had the reputation but sure didn't have the chops these guys have (IMHO).  I bought Evil Urges next day and really do love it.  Got the live album today and will need to give it a proper listen.  Anyway looks like you guys are really onto something with this band - real music played really really well!

Yep another 50+er here. Saw MMJ last year in Manchester UK and I can
honestly say they are one of the best live bands I've ever seen.
Can't split MMJ, Mogwai, Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Pink Floyd
for the best.

Just for info currently cant get enough of Dead Confederate's debut album and the latest Secret Machines.

My husband is 50, and I am 38.  He is a deadhead, and a fan of classic rock,  who hasn't been excited about any new music in many years.  I dragged him to his (and our) first show at Roseland in December of 2006, and we have been obsessed ever since.  We were at RCMH in June, and of course, New Yrs.  They are really the most exciting band out there in my opinion, the very best to come along in a long, long time... ;D

I'm 65.5 years of age & avid.
• having seen EVERYbody live during the 1960s-1970's including the Beatles & the Stones (3x), i don't have to think twice when I say, mmj is beyond compare...
• 1st encounter: broadcast of live concert over npr: it was a major, rarely encountered 'who was THAT?!' moment (link available on request).
• live concerts: Austin City Limits Fest 2007; RCMH, NYC 2008.
(chose not to attend mmj@msg-nye, because the Radio City concert was already the perfect experience);
• live encounter once removed: my son was part of the film production crew & on stage for the npr sxsw set, austin, tx; march 2008; also part of the crew for the npr interview with jj (link available on request).
• favorite youtube clip: erykah badu's surprise appearance 8/23/08...
• after jj announced in a published interview the day before that performing with her would be a dream come true;
• the follow-up article is very cool as well (links to all 3 available on request).
• favorite album until very recently: okonokos;
• (okonokos dvd is best concert movie ever).
• current fave: the download of the complete bonnaroo 2008 concert, available online;
• in awe as well of any solo acoustic sets i've happened across: Acoustic Citsuoca Live! At The Startime Pavilion [EP]; @ St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin during last year's SXSW; @ the Newport Folk Festival 8/2/08—both broadcast over NPR, audio no longer up but available online—oh & the black cab session. #43 (link available on request).
• it's been a sacred trust to introduce mmj to my kids (age 29, 26) their friends, & the teenagers & young adults with whom i work.
• love how mmj has been maturing; love the way that I am too. can't wait to see what happens next. 8-)

QuoteYou are as young as you feel.
So my increasing number of grey hairs are irrelevant?! That's excellent - thanks MJ  ;)
As irrelevant as the amount that I have (which is FAR to many)! Hell look at the Modfather. Full head of greys and still rockin da fuck out.
No DOUBT!  Looking forward to next week at Coachella... You know whose stage I'll be standing in front of on Sunday night!!  8-)

 ;)I'm also hoping for Floorboards.  I'll try to catch something on my phone for you to watch, but I'm notoriously a crappy gig-photog!!

56 here! You get eclectic in musical taste as time passes. That is, your music filter widens. I like MMJ. U2, Sonic Youth, Wilco, all of the old prog bands, and more idie bands than I can mention now. Glad you are here.

Oh no, there isn't an age limit when you're to old to listen to rockin' music is there?  It doesn't seem there is an age limit to perform!!!

52 here.  I have all the studio recordings and a few of the live songs.  This band is fantastic.  I am always looking for new bands to listen to and I have to say most are not worth listening to for very long...but MMJ is forever.  I first got into them after seeing their first show on Austin City Limits

My dad's 62 and he's into MMJ. Not long after I got into them, and JUST about a week after I bought It Still Moves, I was hanging out with my family and my dad put it on.  I was amazed.  He had heard them on a local college station.

This is my first post here. My Missus is just over 50 (she has a toy boy of 46). She's an avid afficionado.  She got me into MMJ 5 years ago. We often take a chance on album reviews in one of our National newspapers -she ordered It still Moves in 2003. Some get sent to recycling others remain.  We hit the jackpot with MMJ - I think it would be fair to say that they are one of 3 (new) bands we have made an effort to see in recent times.

Alas, we have only made one show in the UK, due to distance/pressures of work etc. But we still talk about it. It's not often a band comes along that grabs us in the way MMJ have - and she's a Deadhead who lived in California in the late 70s/early 80s. She also used to schlep around Europe following them too. I like kid myself that I'm an ageing member of the free floating Punk Rock Intelligentsia - which is another way of saying I like to think I know what I am talking about!

I will be insisting on a reserved section for us in the front row for the 2039 tour. Management take note!
