dayum, a little worried about Friday's show in Oakland. Apparently Gener was in rare form last night (and that's saying a lot). Looks like he's lost 40 pounds since I saw last year, guess rehab went out the window...

At the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Monday, January 24
Oh, to have been a fly on the wall of the Boognish's lair this morning.
Based on the complete shitshow that was Ween at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Monday, it's pretty much guaranteed that guitarist Mickey Melchiondo was weaving an impressive tapestry of profanity. And the object of his no doubt considerable ire? Well it wasn't Ween drummer Claude Coleman Jr., bassist Dave Dreiwitz, or keyboardist Glenn McClelland. Like Melchiondo (a.k.a. Dean Ween), they were all total pros, ripping through everything they tackled with devastating precision, whether it was an extra-eerie "Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)" or a greased-lightening cover of Motörhead's "Ace of Spades".
No, the dude with some explaining to do would be one Aaron Freeman, better known to the good people of New Hope, Pennsylvania as Gene Ween. Freeman hitting the stage with a hairdo that was a bizarre combination of Edward Scissorhands and Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future was the first hint something was amiss. Clue number two came during the set-opening instrumental "Fiesta". As his bandmates nailed every stop-and-start note, Freeman stood there like a drunk simpleton who couldn't, despite his best efforts, figure out how to keep time on a tambourine.
Things didn't get any better when he stepped up to the mike. Early numbers like "Mister Richard Smoker" and "Transdermal Celebration" were advance warning that Freeman would be spending the night singing in a voice that was a weird, high-camp cross between Ethel Merman and the Heat Miser from A Year Without Santa Claus.
The ship was temporarily righted when Melchiondo commandeered the mike for the shitkicker classic "Piss Up a Rope", and the awesomely brown "Can U Taste the Waste" was just fucked up enough to make it seem like Ween was a fully functioning unit. Except, on this night, no such luck.
Things went from bad to beyond-weird quickly. To the visible dismay of Melchiondo, Freeman totally blew the lyrics right after the epic guitar solo in "Buckingham Green". And he decided it was easier to sit on the stage than to stand for "Mutilated Lips".
Halfway through the show, it was obvious that all was far from good in Ween land. At one point, as Freeman futilely attempted to tune a guitar, Melchionado turned the singer's amp down when he wasn't looking and then assumed vocal duties for "My Own Bare Hands."
An otherwise blistering "Reggaejunkiejew" was torpedoed when Freeman lay down on the stage mid-song, the other members of Ween subsequently getting their revenge with an extendo-instrumental version of the Carpenters' "Superstar".
It was after the latter number where things arguably came to a head. A completely out of it Freeman finally bounced up to slur "Sorry if your panties are in a bunch." He then proved himself utterly incapable of hitting almost every note during "Freedom of '76".
Obviously having had enough, the rest of Ween retreated to the back of the stage while Freeman again attempted to tune his guitar, a task he eventually abandoned. Subsequently, there was a certain irony to a watching a totally out-of-it waste case serenade the crowd with a solo "Birthday Boy", mostly because of the lyrics "Help me now, I'm going down/And I don't know if I'll be around." It was right around then that Melchiondo flat out up and left the stage with the other members of Ween.
What followed was funny, and sad, as Freeman finished up a sloppy, lone-wolf rendition of "Don't Sweat It" by looking over his shoulder and then slurring "Hey, where's the band?" Shortly thereafter, he walked off alone and the lights came up, leaving the audience angry and pissed.
As anyone lucky enough to have seen Ween at the Starfish Room on the Chocolate & Cheese tour knows full well, once upon a time, getting fucked up was a regular occurrence for Ween. But that was playing for 400 people in shitty dive bars. On this night, Freeman—and Freeman alone—blew it in front of nearly 3,000 fans who'd paid $50 a ticket. And you didn't have to be a fly on a wall to realize that the Boognish and the singer's bandmates weren't the only ones not amused.
ugh, i was just reading that. no good :( i saw them in central park this past september and it was the best ween show ever. get it together gener !!!
I've been sifting through the pages of the ween forum reading about last night. What a mess. Here's someone's post about the show last night...
That's exactly what I was thinking. Spectacle is the word my wife used too. I asked her if she wanted to leave, and she said, "No, I want to stay and see what happens." It started to go really bad around "Mutilated Lips." He sat down, but could barely play. I was worried what would happen when he tried to get up, and he did okay, but knocked over a mic. I think the band tried to give him some time to get his shit together, as they did a few instrumentals, and Deaner's "Bare Hands". But he just looked totally cracked out and like he had aged about 10 years since I saw him last summer. At one point he started riffing loudly and sloppily on the guitar for about 2 minutes, like he was going to start a song, and then Dean came over and turned down his amp. I'm not sure he even figured that out.
Eventually, the rest of the band just drifted away one by one. Claude and Glenn switched instruments on "I Don't Want it." The guitar tech started shutting off Dave and Dean's amps, and collected their gear while Gener warbled on. He was trying to play leads/solos during his little "set" at the end, and it was pretty brutal. I know some of the folks who may be bigger Gener fans than me were psyched to hear some of the obscure shit he was pulling out, and while I have always thought Gene was one of the weirder, more warped front men ever, he just looked, acted, and sounded fucking awful tonight. He kept wondering where the band went, and before the last song said, "I hope the band will come back out and join me for this one." They didn't. Really weird and uncomfortable night.
I don't want to overreact too much, but I had to wonder how he'll be able to continue on the tour, and what the ramifications both inter-personally with the band, and business-wise will be if they have to cancel the whole thing.
This sucks.
That is sad.
Oh no :-\
man
this isn't exactly uncommon behavior in the ween world, or at least it wasn't years ago. But the last time things got this bad at a show, they canceled the tour and Gener went into rehab. I'm really hoping this was just a one-off night, and he'll pull it back together. I guess we'll see what happens tonight in Seattle. I've been really looking forward to this friday in oakland.
What's a good starting point with these guys? I've never really listened to them because I thought they were just some kind of novelty act. I know there are a lot of fans on the board so I'm assuming they're worth checking out.

You'll definitely benefit by listening to their two most well-known live releases, which is Live at Stubbs from sometime back in 2000 and the Vic Theater official release from 2005 I believe (or 04?). The reason I say this is because you can get a good feel for their early stuff that can be extremely off-putting on the album because it's so damn lo fi/unprofessionally done. Plus, like MMJ, they're just a stellar live act. Every last member knows how to be on stage and do their shit with legendary precision and energy.
=====
That's really sad about Gener. When I saw them a few years ago in '08, I think that was after yet another rehab stint. They played really well, but Gener looked off still. And he had this obvious square object under his tshirt. I don't know what it was, but I assumed it was medical.
EDIT:
Also, you can't go wrong with White Pepper, Chocolate and Cheese, and The Mollusk (in that order). I think you should hold off on the Mollusk until it's warm out though. One of the best "drinking in the summer" albums known to mankind.
Sad but unfortunately a common reality with an addict.....That picture tells a huge story. He gained considerable wt in the past years and I would not normally asssume that it was due to meds(but he has been vocal about being on antidepressants in the past (sic. 'Zoloft')). Looks like he may have taken himself off and/or relapsed hard.
Let's hope the band and Gener has the good sense to stop the tour so he can get the help he needs both for addiction and mental health issues.
Thanks, guys. Already listening to White Pepper. They are not at all what I had expected. I'm at work, so I can't give them a proper listenining, but I am liking what I'm hearing so far.
I've always found it interesting at their dynamic too. Deaner just comes across in a totally different way, ya know?
There's a really good interview from a few years back in Relix that gives some insight into their mentality these days. It was made during the peak of Gener's bounce-back and La Cucaracha as well. They basically take a shit on hipsters and why they live in New Hope still and prefer the yuppies there. It's kinda funny.
Plus Deaner talks about Brownie fishing.

you'll find each album is completely different. They never embrace one genre, style or sound. White Pepper is probably their most straight-forward rock-pop album and it's f'ing great. The others are more varied between and within songs. It took me awhile to understand these guys and what they were going for but once that happened I found myself in allegience with the other devoted fans.
To hear the more varied stuff I'd suggest Chocolate and Cheese or Quebec.

Yeah you really gotta approach them the right way. If you listen to the Pod or Pure Guava first you're really gonna hate the band, even though that Pure Guava will eventually have the highest concentration of "that song is FUCKING AWESOME!" moments once you're ready for it

I've been sifting through the pages of the ween forum reading about last night. What a mess. Here's someone's post about the show last night...
That Ween forum is vicious. I have every album and have seen them around 8 times in the 5 years since I've been a devoted fan. I never understood why a lot of their fans would encourage this. The whole 'drug band' mystique loses it's novelty when it reaches these potentially dangerous levels. I've done my fair share of goodies in the past and choose to keep it simple and safe these days but why some of their 'dedicated fans' continually glorify something that is so unhealthy that it jepardizes the very existence of the band...this has always been beyond me. Makes me happy that I troll on a board where the fans actually respect the health and integrity of their musical heroes.
We have tickets for tomorrow night's show here in P-town. I was actually thinking of bailing on the show as of last night for other reasons. But I have had friends with serious drug problems and I don't find it entertaining to spend $50 to see someone completely cracked out attempt to play a show.
I find this very sad, and think in the interest of making the 'right' decision, they should cancel the tour. But canceling tours pisses off fans and costs money, so I guess we will have to see what happens tonight. I am sure he has suffered from one hellofa hangover today :-\
Yeah dood this is really-
A Tender Situation.....
I was lurking at work all night reading about the craziness here.... that picture.... wheeewwwww..... c'mon Gener, is this what Deaner Was Talking About?
It's so weird watching their changes through the years... I haven't glanced yet at the Ween forum, but sounds a bit crazy....
These guys have had one of the biggest 'impacts' on me through mid-teenage-hood and beyond.... I listened to White Pepper when it first came out in 2000, not having the slightest damn idea a.) what Ween was and b.) what pot was really about.... and the two substances blended, and it may have been the beginning of what I first ever knew to be face melting. I just remember the opening notes of "Exactly Where I'm At," and I felt like I was in a spaceship getting ready to launch... (it still has this effect..)
I like:

My ex and our 'group' of friends were then very much into Ween, and all their previous albums were staples anytime we hung out. I remember being pretty spaced a handful of times and needing to skip certain songs because my circuits felt like they might short hahah :-! But yeah, there ought come a time when you get a grip... at least to some degree! What's strange in its own rite is that the Ween show I saw in Charlottesville in '06 actually made me hault the psychedelic realms I'd been exploring. Not like I was non-functioning or not taking care of myself or anything, but something about that show made me steer toward 'whoa.... it's quittin' time for a hot minute...." And that was the beginning of 'slowing down' hahah It really was quite a night...but wheeewww....... (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/rainbowf.gif)
Sad day to see Gener that way.....
I think it was Mr. Choder that mentioned Pure Guava to have some serious gems... this has been a favorite version of "Tender Situation" for some time now:

It's truly an amazing place. It was closed for decades, rotting away, and was recently renovated to the tune of $75 million, and now seems to be THE place to play in the Bay. Not a single bad spot in the place, the floor has vents pumping cool air upward every couple of feet (you can see the small circles on the floor in that pic), easy bar and bathroom access no matter where you are and the sound is amazing. It's no Terminal 5 though ;).

That is exactly what I was wondering when I saw it on the list...
Ice Castles is pretty trippy live....very spacey and psychedelic. The show was top notch, the sound was perfect. Several acoustic tunes with Gener and Deaner sitting on stools, doing the acoustic thing. Demon Sweat was absolutely my highlight of the night, they just don't play that song at all anymore, such a treat. And Glen saying Lucky Man, pretty cool to hear him get to sing a song.

Part of a pretty sweet review...... from http://www.moemoephoto.com/?p=1244 (http://www.moemoephoto.com/?p=1244)
There were some reports a few weeks before this show that Gener had not been doing well after an odd performance in Canada. Gene looked to be extremely healthy and grateful to be in Harrisburg on 02-26-2011. His demeanor and attitude through out the night was nothing but smiles and appreciation for the sold out crowd and all of his songs were performed flawlessly. In fact, Gene was kind enough to come out and sing the Beatles' "Sexy Sadie" with the opening band, Slackwater News, and he not only took a few requests during the show ("She F*&ks Me") but he also extended the setlist playing many more songs than he originally planned that night. Gene had just as much fun as the fans this night.
The night kicked off with Gene playing "She Wanted To Leave" from Ween's album titled The Mollusk. Gene played the first eight songs solo and then invited Ween's bassist, Dave Dreiwitz on stage. The highlight of the second portion of the set was easily "Freedom of '76″ off Ween's Chocolate And Cheese album.
The encore was a great set of songs which featured songs mostly from Ween's most commercially successful album, Chocolate And Cheese album. The encore began with "Buenos Tardes Amigo" and featured the pianist from Slackwater News playing the first potion of the solo. And Gener finished the night on the piano showing his skills on the Ween classic "Even If You Don't".
You never know what to expect at Ween shows..... They throw curve balls at you all night and perform their tails off. Gene shows are no different, he still delivers the same great quirky messages with well crafted songs. This was a great show, the fans were into the show all night and Gener noticed and appreciated it.
The setlist for the night was as follows:
(Gene Ween Solo)
She Wanted To Leave
The Grobe
Stay Forever
Spirit Walker
Chocolate Town
She F*&ks Me
I Don't Wanna Leave You On The Farm
She's Your Baby
(Gene Ween with Dave Dave Dreiwitz)
Ooh Va La *
Stallion Pt 3 *
Flutes Of The Chi *
Birthday Boy *
Our Party *
Object *
Mountains & Buffalo *
Don't Get 2 Close *
Pork Roll Egg & Cheese *
So Long Jerry *
Freedom Of '76 *
Oh Yoko! *
Encore:
Buenos Tardes Amigo * #
Baby Bitch *
What Deaner Was Talkin' About *
Even If You Don't (gener on piano) *
* with Dave Dreiwitz on bass
# with the pianist of Slackwater News on piano
Solid ending to the second set!! Great to hear he's feelin chipper again too 8)

I agree. I've been waiting for them to play close to me, but nothing yet.
But that article Wood posted, what happened at the show in Canada? Anyone know? Great to hear that he's looking "extremely healthy".
Nice write up woodnymph! The pianist from slackwater news (dan) is actually a friend of mine, he was psyched to get to play with gener.
Walts...gener was a complete wasteoid at the west coast tour opener in Vancouver. Pretty much ruined the show, rest of the band just walked off stage after a while. Apparently it was an ugly scene.

Apparently he just got his captain's lisence and you can book fishing excursions on his charter in the Delaware or wherever he is based....Apparently there's a "no WEEN talk clause" tho, as he wants to focus on fishing for the weekend not fanboy questions about his band. ;)
Seems like a cool thing anyway. I enjoy fishing every so often so this kinda thing appeals to me. He may even pick you up at the airport if I remember correctly...I'll have to find the link.

I know a guy that had Deaner captain his bachelor party. He was from another board (fark maybe) and said it was a great, but drunken experience.
my friends live in ocean grove which is close to where deaner bases his excursions out of .. a month or so ago we were talking about doing that this summer. i had totally forgotten about that ;D
speaking of ween .. below is their central park show from this past fall. it was a hell of a good time. earlier this month i hosted a download day and this was one of the shows i used .. it still happens to be up in the group media fire so there ya go :)

The Mollusk is one of the greatest summertime albums ever. If you're not living large outdoors with a nice beer during Mutilated Lips, you're not living
I was in a band from 2006-2008 and we played John and Peter's in New Hope Pa 6 times a year. I used to see Gene face down at the bar almost every time. No one ever bothered him or approached him. The place holds a 100 people tops and the bar area holds about 8 people. It was weird - as if it wasn't really him - just a guy that looked like him. I never once heard "Ween" spoken in his presence but occasionally a Ween song would be played through the P.A. I hope he is back on track and stays that way. I haven't been to J&Ps in a while.

I
did eventually catch the audio stream last night, and Gener did seem kinda tired, but he sounded ok... I'm listening to the audio stream on archive from the 40watt (http://www.archive.org/details/ween2011-04-15.hometeam.flac16 (http://www.archive.org/details/ween2011-04-15.hometeam.flac16)) right now, from April, and he sounds great 8) Hope he's still feelin' right! I can't find any pictures or videos from High Sierra yet!
Yeah I didn't think about it, I guess La Cucaracha was awhile ago now..... the news I've seen has just been about fests they're playing...
Cripe I wish I was at this 40watt show!! :P
I enjoyed some of FAT's stream, but blew it and missed the two bands I really wanted to hear: Dr. Dog and Ween! Wish I coulda made it to the 40 watt, too. They need to do a full tour!

THE BEST OF HIGH SIERRA MUSIC FESTIVAL ENCORE PERFORMANCES"
great times at high sierra, the band sounded great. Short but sweet, I'm used to them browning it up for 3+ hours, but with a shortened time it seemed a little weird. Great to hear pork rolll, beacon light (which by the way is mislabeled in the setlist woodnymph posted, no jammypac was played, but beacon light contains the lyric 'strap on that jammypac'), mucus, monique the freak and so many more...they all sounded great. Gener looked great....that man loses and gains weight by the bunches in short periods of time!

AHHH! Thank you fredo!!! To actually know for sure what was going on is a beautiful thing 8) Glad you got to bear witness! And suuuuper glad to hear the Genester is well. Also glad I didn't miss a Jammypac, I missed the first 5 or 6 songs from the online stream and was hopelessly clawing at available setlistings... thanks for the real scoop!!

More importantly, what did you think. And for what it's worth, Ween can bring a bad crowd. Distance isn't always bad. My wife's been molested at Ween shows on more than one occasion.
The crowd was super chill...nothing to worry about.
Yac, I stayed for the first five songs or so of MMJ, then wandered over to Beirut. Definitely glad I did, that was magical. Wandered back in time to catch OBH too.

I know someone else who did that bachelor party thing. While it was a good time, there was no discussing the band. It's serious fishing time. They'll get you good and drunk on Modelo too though, or so I hear
I've heard the same. He's def very serious about his fishing.
This is exciting news! Aaron Freeman - Marvelous clouds, April 10th. Fingers crossed for more Ween related music this yr
Marvelous Clouds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sdXMs6FmHs#ws)
On April 10, the artist also known as Gene Ween will release Marvelous Clouds, a tribute album to the songwriter and poet Rod McKuen, whose songs have been recorded by everyone from Waylon Jennings to Perry Como to Madonna. Released under Gene's non-Boognish-sanctioned name Aaron Freeman, Marvelous Clouds was produced by Ben Vaughn, who last worked with Freeman on Ween's classic 1996 country excursion, 12 Golden Country Greats.

apparently this was posted on Mickey's facebook page today...
My Best Ween Story (4 photos)
me and carlos sort of collaborate-------I think enough time has passed where I can finally tell my favorite Ween story of all-time.
The businesses and the people involved have long since closed their doors and moved onfor good and hopefully the people involved (and Carlos himself, if it comes to that) will have a good sense of humor about this story.
In 2003 Ween released our album "quebec" on Sanctuary Records. We worked on the album for 2 years in our beach house in Holgate,NJ, a rented house in the Pocono Mountains of PA, the garage behind Aaron's house in Pt. Pleasant, PA, my upstairs guest room, and finally Andrew Weiss's living room in NJ. We also worked at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ and Graphic Sound Studios in Ringoes, NJ. It was not a great period in our personal lives, Aaron was going thru a divorce and I was partying way too hard myself—it was some dark shit. The record is mone of my favorites, but it is a depressing album lyrically. It was not an easy record to make either, as evidenced by the amount of places we worked, trying to find the right environment. There are demos available online that I posted where you can hear the process at work, we racked up our normal batch of like 6 dozen songs or more before whittling it down to what was finally released, 15 tunes.
I am a huge fan of Carlos Santana. He is one of my favorite guitarists of all-time. He is playing better these days than ever before in my opinion. His music is more radio friendly, for sure, but as a guitarist he has aged like a fine wine. Only Neil Young, Prince, and a small handful of others can make that claim as they become members of the AARP.
We were working in Andrew's living room on the song "Transdermal Celebration", our drummer Claude Coleman had just gotten into a horrific car crash and left us w/o a drummer for the recording and ensuing tour. Eventually it worked itself out where the record took so long to complete that Claude made enough of a recovery to do the world tour with us supporting "quebec." In the meantime though, even though Claude had played on some of the demos, drumming on the album was left up to me, Josh Freese, and Sim Cain. "Transdermal Celebration" had been recorded 3 times by this point, with a drum machine, with Claude playing drums, and the final take on the album which features Josh Freese. It was the eventual single from the album. So, we're in the middle of this session and I get a phone call from my roadie (nameless) who also worked for a backline company (nameless) that supplied amps, drums, lights, etc. to bands touring in the Northeast. My roadie told me that Carlos Santana's equipment (including his guitars) had arrived via a trucking company that night at their depot. Carlos was recording an appearance on "Good Morning America" the next morning and his equipment was to be delivered to the set in NYC in a few hours.
What needed to be done was immediately clear to me, I had an opportunity to play the solo on "Transdermal Celebration" through Carlos Santana's amplifier and guitar. I had one shot at it, it meant taking a hard disk recorder to a storage space where all of Carlos' stuff was sitting in transit. I arrived at 2am. We (very carefully) unpacked his equipment and set up his stage gear and in one take I recorded the guitar solo for "Transdermal Celebration" (the one that appears on the album, playing thru Carlos Santana's guitar, pedalboard, and amplifier. The whole think took 10 minutes and we were terrified we were going to get caught. A lot of people would have lost their jobs. We got the fuck outta there relly fast after that. So the solo on "Transdermal Celebration" was played thru all of Sanatana's shit in what resembled an early morning bank heist or something..........
Of course a story like this requires visual proof, so here it is. Don't tell anyone about these please.
-Dean Ween 6/14
an afterthought: regarding the carols post, i'd like to add that we handled his equipment as if it were the Mona Lisa. We photographed the way his roadie had his cables wrapped and positioned and put everything back exactly as it was found. The whole process was over as quickly as it happened. Also, the respect that I have for Carlos and the depth, spirituality and stamina of his playing is held by me in the highest regard. I am not just a fan of Carlos, I am a believer and follower of everything he has done, and yes that includes the pop singles. I felt it was important to have this be known, there is no one I hold in a higher regard. Also, I have a lifetime of experience of handling equipment, as did the other person involved, it wasn't two drunk buffoons manhandling a legend's gear, the furthest thing from it. I wanted to put that out there. -DW

Is this for real? I guess this makes me a real milk-drinking rule-follower, but that seems like an extremely sketchy, disrespectful, and stupid thing to do, especially with gear belonging to an artist that he "holds in the highest regard." To me, that would mean that they would not fuck with that gear under any circumstance, no matter how much experience one has handling equipment and how careful they were.

oh I'm sure it's for real. And I can see what you're saying, and in my book very few people would get a pass for pulling off such a stunt, Deaner gets a pass. Without a doubt one of the most overlooked/underrated guitar players of this generation, but that's not necessarily why I think he gets a pass in my book. He has the much respect for music, it's history, it's legends. I think he couldn't resist the opportunity, and as he mentioned in the story he, and the band, were in a bad space at that time.
I'm sure he feels like he probably did something wrong too on some level. Surprised he actually posted the story.
I agree completely with your assessment of Dean's legendary skill and status in the music biz, and I would have had plenty of confidence in his ability not to mistreat the gear or fuck anything up, but accidents happen. If Carlos would have given Deaner a pass, then yeah, no problem, but I highly doubt that would have been the case. And I'll bet he's plenty pissed about it now. Anyhow, not that big a deal, I'm just an old fuddy duddy.

Nice one, wf. Hahaha I watched this some time ago but forgot about it
I just saw Gener in Pittsburgh on 10/1-- he looked great and sounded excellent! (Oh god, this video is cracking me up again! Wish I had Ween fan parents-- OH MAN I forgot he does the Stallion bit at the end too!) We yelled out for Gener to play Pollo Asado, and he said, "Oh man... yeah, can you tell me the lyrics again?? Actually, I have them in my green backpack-- if you get them for me I'll play it." I thought he was just making shit up, but when he came back for the encore, he was wearing a green backpack, and he was holding a lyric sheet! And he read all the words to Pollo Asado off of it, with his band holding down the tune. Surprise! I got to see Deaner in Asheville in April and Gener in Oct, so the year feels more "complete" now, I'd say. He has some REALLY GOOD NEW TUNES, too. Not sure what you've heard already. I haven't heard a whole lot, myself. After he played one called "Golden Monkey," someone yelled out to hear Mutilated Lips; and he says, "That was pretty much Mutilated Lips right there, man.... like Mutilated Lips Pt. II or something...." Definitely a gorgeous tune. They made it ultra psychedelic live. Glad the boys are still creating.
announcement coming soon!

can't wait! Definitely in for both nights.
It wouldn't surprise me if they add a third like they did in Denver and NY.
I am embarrassingly late to the Ween train, but at least I'm now fully on board! These guys are great!!
In the span of two weeks, I've acquired their entire discography and am now devouring bootleg after bootleg. Every morning, I wake up with a different Ween track stuck in my head. Behind the goofery there is some amazing songwriting and instrumentation going on.
And they just announced a show practically in my backyard in September! Can't waaaait! I have to skip a buddy's wedding in order to attend, but I feel like Deaner and Gener would approve.
Welcome to the party and glad you found them just in time to see them. After my 2 February shows and the cancelled Austin show I feeling the itch to see them again.
Is it normal behaviour to spend an entire night watching live clips of "Fluffy"?

yes. typically while sitting on the porch.
I had a friend in college that was obsessed with fluffy. We'd listen to different versions for hours at a time.
I found my first show from '96 on YouTube the other night and made my wife sit through it. She was amazed at how much I remembered.

Hope you enjoyed it tonight! Glad they played it.
That said, thought tonight was hugely underwhelming. They (especially Gener) did not seem into it at all.
But underwhelming in a very brown way...

Ween at Lockn kicked ass. Already looking forward to catching them again in Toronto in a couple weeks!
Ween's show at TURF in Toronto this past weekend was my first true spiritual awakening to the boognish. Holy fuckin' shit, these guys are on fire. Saw 'em at Lockn, but I suppose I was not in quite brown enough of a mindset back then. Flash forward to Saturday night and the only thing more brown than the copious amounts of mud on the field was Ween's setlist. One of the first things Dean said upon hopping on stage was "we're Ween and we're here to fuck you with our music." Amen!!
Absolutely loved it from start to finish. The perfect combo of jammin' solos, hard-ass rockin', smooth groovin' and just batshit craziness. I laughed, I danced, I tranced -- I had the time of my life. "Voodoo Lady" was off the charts, but got quite a few rarities as well -- "Stallion Pt. 1" and "Stallion Pt. 5" were SO smokin', "Pollo Asado" was fuckin' hilarious and "Isreal" defies description. Gener broke out laughing towards the end of the latter, saying "we better stop this song now, I could do this all night."
GOTTA SEE THESE GUYS AGAIN! That three night run at Port Chester is lookin' awwwwfully tempting right now...
Good to hear. I hope they come to Texas soon. I've been dying to see them again since the reunion weekend in CO.

Really enjoyed both nights in SF this last weekend. So great to have them back playing some shows together.
Those SF setlists looked absolutely perfect. That "Fluffy" night two closer was possibly the best they've played it since they got back together. Sooooo epic. Hoping more shows get announced soon!
Out 11/18
GodWeenSatan Live was mixed from the multitrack recording and mastered by Tom Ruff. This 2LP set is pressed onto 180g white vinyl and includes a free MP3 download of the album.
Uncertain whether or not to cancel their re-release party for GodWeenSatan: The Oneness on Sept. 14, 2001, just days after the tragic events of 9/11, Ween took the stage at their local bar, John & Peter's, in New Hope, PA. What unfolded was pure catharsis from both the band and the packed crowd. Ween ran through the album in its entirety and captured the show on 24-track tape. This release, the band's first since 2008, is that never-before-heard recording.
Anyone know what's up with Deaner? Saw something on Reddit about rehab.

Have heard mixed chatter. It probably wouldn't be a bad thing if he was.
Damn, hope he's alright. Seemed like they had February dates booked in Vegas (due to Dave's announced absence from JRAD's winter dates) but those got called off. Hoping whatever's troubling them gets worked out and they're back on the road soon!
Looks like they're off again because of Dean's mental health. I hope they make it back to the stage again. Would love another Freeman album as well if they're really done this time.
