I had to..
MMJ, Neil Young, Arcade Fire, U2, Soundgarden, Daft Punk
How would they NOT play the 10th Anniv?
I can't deal with these speculations. MMJ will be there and all you effers better be, too.
If Radiohead plays, too, my head will explode. Freaking explode.
Hopefully in the vicinity of Nicole Atkins.
I had to...
i'm not a big festival gal and have yet to go to a 'roo .. which is funny b/c it's about an hour from my hometown. the biggest 'fest' (totally not a fest) that i've been to is a few moe.downs ( & snoe.down). even with the boys (potentially) playing b'roo .. i'm still not so sure. seeing my favorite bands with 50k other folks just doesn't sound fun. pls to convince me otherwise?
i will say though .. road tripping with penny down to the dirty could be fun (http://www.thejamgirlz.com/phorums/images/smiles/eusa_think.gif) i'm definitely a fence sitter .. plus there are phish summer tour plans to consider. damn you awesome music !!
If MMJ is on the bill Im there. Also, Soundgarden would be a MAJOR plus. Neil Young? Love him, one of my all time favs, but if its not with Crazy Horse, not worth what he charges. But in Festival, all bets are off.
Roos only 5 hours for me so Im there.
Brooke, you would totally dig on the Roo. It's an experience. The vibe is different from any other fest I've been to.
Looked into it a bit, last year bands were announced in early Feb. Looks like historically speaking it'll be another month before its announced.
Brooke....you have to go. I'm making you. End of discussion.
I'm in, Jacket or not :D
I am so ready for this...ten year anniversary. they will be there. mark it down. regardless the lineup is gonna be amazing.

i haven't had a car in 8 years but this would be perfect to break out my mad highway driving skills...and we can get one of those GPS things with the sexy british lady talking voice who tells us 'turn right, stay on Rte 80 for 8 thousand miles, oh wait, reconfiguring'...and we can eat cheetos and take bong hits and listen to America's greatest hits..and stop at one of those Sonics and order tator tots for breakfast....(alright alright)....i'll stop...
i hate bonnaroo--it's too big and there are too many stinky, sweaty, smelly kids there who love bad music, but i will go again if the boys play...but i'll have to camp VIP because i need to shower and shave my armpits..every day
yes ... i've got mad driving skills, in fact i LOVE driving!! and yes to VIP camping. i was thinking in the back of my mind ... "if i go, it best be VIP" ;D

Eating Cheetos and driving is a baaad idea, doing bong hits is much safer. The best part about eating cheetos is licking the cheese off my fingers, every time I do it my wife backhands me because she can't handle the lip smackin.
VIP is not a question.
Bonnaroo should be a nice warm up for the real deal - the Australian 2011 tour!!!!
HAHAHA! Penny Lane.
We will need to start a huge discussion about this when they announce the lineup/tickets are purchased. If my car is still alive, we'll road trip it (can you drive stick?) If not, we'll rent a car or walk or thumb with an overweight trucker who wants to braid our hair.
I just can't see them playing Waka and not playing Roo, you know?

Haha! Not to sound like a priss, but when I went to 'Roo in 09, we stayed in a hotel. I don't mind camping, but we didn't know what to expect and decided not to. We drove into the fest and stayed all day and night and took naps under the tree (ha) and would go back to the room, sleep for a couple hours, stock up on bottled water, shower and go back to the farm. Roo is soooooo huge that it seems less like camping and more like those Japanese hotel capsules. But I'm game for anything...I can't wait to plan this shiiiizzzzzz.

Me too, sort of a hostel with minimal privacy, they could use curtains though. Imagine these in Grand Central..pretty cool concept, so I Googled it. About.com says that ear plugs could be useful in sleeping in these. Guess they have that in common with Roo. Oh also, no women allowed for security reasons. Interesting.

i slept in one of these on two seperate occasions.. the first time i had a glass door with tented glass and the other time was just a clear glass window for a door. i don't remember too much as i was drunk from partying all night in some town other than the one i lived in while i was in japan. good cheap way to crash out for a few hours though. wish i would have had the presence of mind to take pics
How much would it cost in American?
My friend is buying her husband and I VIP tickets for him for their anniversary. Sounds weird I know, but he really wants to go and she can't cause they have kids. She doesn't want money but I'm going to give her some anyway. Let's do this!
the last two times i've gone to bonnaroo i stayed in a hotel. got a lodging package thru boomerang/bonnaroo. BRILLIANT.
honestly, the toughest things about camping were that our spot was the FURTHEST it could've been from the fest and not being able to sleep once the sun was up b/c it was too hot.
i have some festival-going stamina, but bonnaroo w/out a bed and shower is out of my range. ;)
also: i've got my ticket!
^ that's why VIP is crucial...showers and proximity to Centeroo is worth it!
what about the heat in the morning? is it strictly tenting? i wouldn't mind being closer to the fest, but i don't want to be up at 7:30am.
You can do RVs in VIP too. I honestly wasn't bothered by the heat at all - brought a tent fan and didn't even use it. There are a lot of tricks in how you set up your camp - we had a large crew and set up an internal "shade corridor" of tarps and canopies so that the breeze could get through our entire row. I also had a large tarp extending from my canopy over my tent to block the morning sun. I brought an air mattress and sheets...there was absolutely no "roughing it" going on :D And they don't pack you in as tightly as they do in the GA campground...it's spaced out more like Wildhorse with lots of green space.
I really do like "real" camping - but not in the Tennessee heat!
I promise I don't work for Roo :D Just getting excited to (hopefully) go back!
You can hear the What stage from VIP, too - one of my fondest memories from that year was waking up to the sweet sound of Al Green soundchecking :)
I think that this is a sign of them not playing Bonnaroo. Bonnaroo took a huge step towards mainstream last year and I don't see them going back. You can count on names like lady gaga on the top of roo's list this year.
I'm waiting to see what the other festivals are doing before I make up my mind on wakarusa. Pearl Jam is having their own festival this year. I'm sure there line-up is gowing to be great. They haven't even announced a location other than somewhere in middle america.
I've talked to people who have gone to wakarusa since it moved to Arkansas and said it was the best festival they had been to. With that being said I'm definatley interested in going considering I go to at least one camping festival a year. I would choose waka over roo any day.
They are playing bonnaroo.

Also, the lady who organizes the line up for Roo said they had so many headliners this year they actually had to tell some of them they over booked and sorry. That being said, Jacket can't really compare with headliners like Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Springsteen, KoL, DMB, Kanye, etc etc etc etc. This is good and bad for MMJ, in my opinion. Good because that means if they play it will most likely be late night, but bad because it means they might be one of the bands that got the boot. If because it's the 10th anniversary they're going to try to bring back past bands for a super line-up or soemthing, I think Jacket will be there. Who knows, all we can do is speculate.
I just noticed this bonnaroo "all access" thing. I emailed them for information (aka price). It has to be done in groups of 8. If its not tooooo crazy, I'll be looking for 6 other people to share with. It includes A/C living space, as well as other cool ass perks. The big one for me though is that you get close to the two big stages automatically. Does VIP do that? I don't know. How much is VIP? If its not too much more it might be worth it to get good spots for our boys. I'm scared that they are gonna play because that means two music festivals back to back.
I like cool ass-perks

So the all access bus is only 3,000 per person if you have 8 people!! (seriously who has that much money for bonnaroo? ???)
I sort of enjoy the prospect of being a filthy degenerate for a few days.
The only thing that I seek to avoid when going to a festie is a campsite in Arkansas for a concert in Tennessee. I walked to a friend who was truly far out in the fields a few years ago. The chafing! I needed my own bottle of baby powder just for the walk back.
Our campsite, though behind the main porta potties between shakedown and the food at 'roo was really the ultimate campsite.
last year I was a 2 minute walk from the main Centeroo entrance. It was awesome. Another thing I like about the filth pile is the all illegal access pass.

VIP is like 6-700 per person...ridiculous---back in the day they used to feed you, too..
I made the expensive mistake of buying a VIP ticket back in 2008. I did it because I was going alone, so what the hell, make the most of it....well, now I know..!
First of all, the only real benefit of doing VIP is the camping proximity to the stage. I was located in a primo spot about 25 feet from the VIP entrance to the main stage so that was cool when it was open. More often than not, it was not, and I had to go all the way around to the main entrance, which was about a 15 minute walk, no biggie, but open the gate for god's sake!! Why have it closed all the time? If you are going in a RV, you have to go VIP, but as for camping proximity, you get closer with Tent only camping.
As for the viewing area, its restricted to a Bleacher on the back of the centeroo stage, and a patch of grass way on the side of the main stage, both areas are a waste if you want to see a band you love up close.
Next, the pass promised food. Each and every time I tried to get a bite at the food tent, they were out of food. The only way to get food is to wait in line for literally an hour, and they would periodically run out of food. Since it was being prepared off the VIP site, the line would dead stop for 20 minutes at a time while hundreds wait in line for a hockey puck burger. .
Bathrooms and showers, supposed to be clean, well the showers were nasty but I didn't expect much and the bathroom smell like the NJ turnpike, sorry NJers. just an observation.. ;)
Anyway, it was not worth the 800 bucks I paid for the pass, I should have gone GA.

I went VIP in '08 and didn't have any of those problems. How did you get a single VIP ticket?
I went in '09 and didn't have any of those problems either. And they do provide a meal and beer on Thursday night, as well as a private concert (that year it was Janelle Monae among others).
I really liked the viewing hill for watching headliners; they provided lawn chairs and you had your own bar and restrooms. If you wanted to fight the crowds and get up close, you could do that too - but it was nice to have a respite sometimes too.
Anyway, to each their own.

If Ashley Capps is a dude, I don't think that's the interview I'm thinking of. The interview I read was interviewing 1 of the 2 people in charge of building the line up. I know Ashley is a co-founder as of yesterday. I know I read this though, I'm not crazy. He/She/Whoever was interviewed said something along the lines of, "We've had so many potential headliners agree to play that we don't have enough time slots." It was more in depth though. I'm gonna look up the consequence of sound interview and see if its the one.
Was it this?
http://www.examiner.com/festivals-in-nashville/americana-festival-update-9-9-bentley-confirmed-bonnaroo-founder-on-panel (http://www.examiner.com/festivals-in-nashville/americana-festival-update-9-9-bentley-confirmed-bonnaroo-founder-on-panel)
Capps stated that some of the Bonnaroo 2011 lineup is already set and shrugged off a question about running out of headliners by stating "we have several places we're looking at going in 2011 and, honestly, there's more there already than we can fit in."
Sorry, don't mean to bug you about this...it would just be pretty huge news in the Roo community if they said they had actually booked and then turned away some of the headliners.
Interestingly enough, this is part of that article too:
A panelist also mentioned My Morning Jacket as an act that was developed largely through Bonnaroo word of mouth, to which Capps replied "My Morning Jacket was extremely well developed when we got them."
I don't mean to say that they booked and then booted. I just read it as they had many interested and then had to say sorry. I thought it would have been long before the actual booking and scheduling. I would think this happens every year, but it seemed like they were having to tell bigger acts tht usually would be an honor. Its completely possible that I read into it too much.
I'm really up in the air as to whether I would do the 'Roo again. If I do, I've gotta do it better than last year! I feel like I caught PARTS of lots of shows, but missed A LOT that I wanted to see. I may have allowed myself to be distracted by side drama...that's never happening again. But the main issue was probably self control! Too much partying! If that's possible...we would stay up all hours of the night, wake up and drink and whatnot, and do it all over. Which is doable, but not when you can't sleep because it's too hot. I bet I averaged MAYBE 2 hours of crappy sleep every night. We did have a canopy set up over all the tents too. My buddy passed out in the heat during the Isis show, and after I saw that, I had to RUSH out of that tent to avoid passing out myself. Lost some vision for a few seconds, but sat down and cooled off and got better pretty quickly. Anyway...I might be looking for a festival with some cooler weather or at least some indoor lodgings...I would do the hotel thing but that would really cut down on the partying having to be sober enough to leave every night, and it just seems like a pain in general, not having access to your stuff within walking distance...I would miss waaaaay too many shows. I would do the VIP/RV thing if it wasn't too expensive...just need an escape from that heat!
I'm just antsy for all these summer lineups to drop...I gotta make some choices. It's making me spazzy! ;D

Anyway...I might be looking for a festival with some cooler weather or at least some indoor lodgings...I would do the hotel thing but that would really cut down on the partying having to be sober enough to leave every night, and it just seems like a pain in general, not having access to your stuff within walking distance...I would miss waaaaay too many shows. that's the same experience i had... 4 days of dust, no shade, crappy food, no sleep, too far back for any of the good shows...luckily Soulshine was there thsi last time so we had fun, and the first few years it was pretty good, especially the years MMJ played-- .....if you do camp VIP or Guest camping, by the second day, the bathrooms/showers look like those NJ turnpike bathrooms someone was talking about earlier, ...but there are so many other little cool festivals, it's hard to justify the prices and the trek out to a big field... ..if you do go, you have to plant yourself at the smaller stages to get any enjoyment out of it..
then again, i'm old and cranky and don't like to smell or be dusty---
I hope they don't play roo and make me even think about going there again. I wish they would play Wanee because I was planning on going down there this year. Roo can't even keep the porto potties clean last year and the cops are way to much now. It's a festival for the cool kids now.
It sucks because it's only 4 hours away for me.
It's a shame MMJ's Roo sets historically just don't deliver. ;) ;D

I agree I hope they don't play to make my decision easier, but I will assume they are.
I hope they don't play the Roo as well. I won't be going either way. I've gone twice and have vowed to never subject myself again to 80K people shoved onto some stinky cow fields in the middle of the summer with sweltering heat and 99% humidity. Truly the arm pit of 'Merica.

It certainly wasnt all bad, dont mean to sound like that. But the food at that time was an all week end thing, and I suspect thats been discontinued. One huge benefit of VIP and being so close to the entrance to the main stage was that when there was a main stage act playing, I was so close to the entrance I could go back and forth to my camp site. Having gone and came multiple times, the guards didn't search VIPs, or at least got to know my face and it allowed me to get a supply of cold beers in my lawn chair bag. I get a few at a time go back, get more etc. It did save me a ton of cash on beer, and I got a free tshirt and poster. :)
I really like the idea of the on-site rv's. You just go to the festival like normal but the rv is there waiting for you. If anyone is interested in this I think we should do it

My friends did this 2 years ago as a bachelorette party. Tis the only way to go. Me...well I can't even deal with the idea of how many people are there, how hot it is, and how much money it would cost me to do it in comfort. I am saving my $$ for a west coast MMJ tour. All the way up and down the coast.
But I think it is a fair assumption that MMJ will play (just my 2 cents).

I like your optimism! I'm right there with you on this one.
As for RV's at the Roo, you really need to get on them super early, unless you want to rent one from states away and drive it all the way, which gets real expensive on gas. All the normal RV rental companies (Cruise america, el monte, etc.) all get booked solid within close proximity. The other alternative is to scour craigslist for a private individual looking to rent. We did this in 04, rented from a private individual in Alabama and drove it up. If you can find a private person, you'll get a much nicer RV. The Cruise America ones are absolute crap, el monte are slightly nicer.
That's my deal with them playing Roo, mostly. I know I wanna go to and this PJ festival and I know I wanna go to as many MMJ shows as I can (but over here in the east), so it will be a musically expensive summer. My Plan is to hit some sort of Alabama, TN, SC row as well as OH, IN, IL. We'll see what stops they make. Plus if they decide to do any 2+ night runs within 10hours of me I'll be there. Plus any hometown shows because I live in Louisville. Though I don't believe they'll play a Lou show this year. I already have about 1050$ saved up purely for summer music. Plus I'd be willing to empty out my savings account which is just a little bit more. I'm also really hoping for some Flaming Lips, Pearl Jam, an Springsteen shows.
So there's my ramble on why I hope they don't play Roo. Basically because I'm selfish.

This is great advice, Fredo - I never thought of checking craigslist for a private RV owner. Good to know the quality was nicer, too. Were the prices comparable?
I feel like from what we've seen so far, this year MMJ will be festival whores in the early part of the year and not play that many regular dates due to radius clauses and such. Then maybe add some regular shows in the late summer/fall/winter like in '08.

Radius clauses sound so circuitual
I can't recall what we paid for the RV, but I definitely remember thinking we got a great deal. A friend of mine did all the legwork and was the one that found it.
I am not sure how my friends did it (one of them works for APE...so she has serious music connections). But they rolled into the 'roo in a rental car, went into the VIP area where their RV was already parked, spent the weekend with the RV and then left (without having to empty the septic tank...score!). Again, this is the only way I personally could deal. I would research this option if I was going...

The powers-that-be just kicked the Bonnaspeculation season into overdrive by offering up their first in a series of clues that will lead up to the great big initial announcement in about a month's time. Many of these cloos were misleading last year, and it seemed like the festival was just pulling our legs on a few. But after all, Bonnaroo has always been a great marketing force (even in the first year, when they relied almost strictly on word-of-mouth), always adding something new to keep people like myself intrigued year-in-and-year-out The first clue immediately brings to mind the great David Bowie, what are your thoughts?:
Clue #1 (courtesy of @Bonnaroo): A trip to space thwarted by a speckled lad's demise. A watershed moment otherwise.

this is bullshit.. smells alot like the year they rolled out the lineup via the little cartoons on their myspace page every 15 minutes.. ONE BY ONE and in random order with clues in between. it was like chinese water torture.
They do the clues every year, at least since 2008 or so.
They are always awful.
Not sure how legit this is, but a friend of mine had a Bonnaroo lineup poster posted to his FB account this morning. Perhaps leaked out by a printer? Or just a hoax? Anyhoo, headliners were listed as U2, Further, and Neil Young. A certain band we all love was listed below the headliners along with The Strokes and Paul Simon. Lots of good names on there, i guess......
Did it look like this?

It's a fake. Paste had a link to it earlier, but now it's gone.

Well now that's interesting. If it's a fake, it's a good one.
that last one looks pretty polished...if it is a fake someone has way too much time on their hands.
by the looks of it, that would mean MMJ would be on the What Stage for another late-night set? Unless they played main stage over Furthur...but now I'm speculating about a speculation.
Don't get your hopes up about those posters. They are fakes. 100% certain about that.
I'm still hoping Bonnaroo will have MMJ.....but those posters are fakes from Inforoo message board. :D
Thanks for confirming, itm :) I didn't have time to check Inforoo last night. This fake is a pretty impressive one, though - all the names are spelled correctly! ;D
blast those fake posters. every year! harumph. *imagine an peeved smilie here*
Headliners:
My Morning Jacket / Further / Dispatch / R.E.M. / Wilco
Sub:
Primus / Jack & Wanda / STS9 / Band Of Joy / Pretty Lights / Animal Collective
I was just thinking about that clue... Lyrics to Anytime?
Seriously, fuck them so hard if U2 is a headliner and they include Drake. Yes, I know I can simply not see their sets. But the thing is, I still have to co-exist with their tasteless fans (apologies to those of you who might like either one of those insults to music, but if you're here, you're not a member of that legion). Have some standards as to how pop you want to go. To me, if you take a step towards some label-hyped nobody like Drake, your next step is Ke$ha, which is dangerously close to Justin Bieber/Jonas Brothers headlining.
And if those were real, do you really think that artists like Ben Kweller, Ted Leo, or Trail of Dead would be buried in the small print? I'm not saying they get marquee, but usually you put the real niched fan base/up and comers in small print at the bottom. Maybe Trail has faded over the past decade, but I'd assume Kweller and Leo have more recognition than say Darius Rucker in this day and age. Or definitely Janelle Monae.
no seriously U2 would be enough to make me say fuck Roo. I know there are 100+ bands but when I pay 300$ i feel like Im giving the most of my money to the headliners.
Yeah, but the rest of that lineup is awesome, even if fake. U2 and Drake are enough to make me consider sticking solely with Mountain Jam, but providing I don't fail the NY bar in a month, I'd like to make 'Roo my reward.
i have such a delimma on my hands. I don't know if its possible finacially or schedule wise to swing waka and roo
Over at Inforoo.com (bonnaroo message boards) a poster named Insider confirmed MMJ for Friday night at Roo. She hasn't been wrong the past two years and leaks us info close to the lineup release.

To be fair, the indie darlings are much better than previous years. way more festival friendly. I never though Death Cab for Cutie should ever play at a festival, for example
Here's how I"m looking at it - if I can go, I will try and hawk some tickets off craigslist after the schedule goes live. A HUGE factor for any of the festies - Mtn Jam, Hangout, etc, is that if MMJ gets an open-ended late night jam at 'Roo that will be 1000% more important to me. Legendary potential. Plus the amount of cross overs: Plant/Krauss, Jack White/Jackson, James/Atkins, etc.
But the last thing I want to do is buy tickets now and have my decisions canceled out by poor scheduling.
and flights just shot WAY up...

So apparently they're not doing tickets, but RFID wristbands "unique to you and your order"
I'm not sure how I feel about that - if I can't buy my tix on spec and hope to get rid of them on CL if I can't go, or inversely hold off until a few weeks before to see if I can afford it then
My mission is to go. hear some new songs . I'm mostly interested in the headlines and don't really know the others. To avoid counterfeit tickets, they're issuing RFID wristbands that can be scanned at the gate. This can be a non issue or a huge issue, here's why (and I'm not 100% clear on which way they're going)
1) The RFID is used solely to verify that the tickets are authentic, independent of who presents them. That's fine, cool, no big deal. Slightly more risk on my end, but not enough that I can't overcome it if I just meet the person selling.
2) The RFID is tied to the purchaser. A bit more unlikely, but possible. This requires the person who purchased the tickets to be present so they can all be tied to the same purchaser.
It's skimpy on the metal this year... although The Sword and Kylesa are awesome.

well to be fair you can say the same about a lot of rock bands and artists. I mean I know very little about rap but I know in that world he is pretty legendary..and it is no different than a nostalgic rock band playing the Roo..people are not there to hear their new stuff...he is a big name and that is what Bonnaroo goes for to sell tickets.

eminem and lil wayne...lineup looks good...i'm not regretting only goin to the hangout though
100% agree...the Roo is so commerical. I'd rather see MMJ at Hangout or Mtn Jam.
the Superjam with Dan and Dr. John is the only thing that would really interest me...but other than that looks like your typical Roo lineup. Rap artist of the day, a big jamband and the indie darlings as your headliners.
Like him or not, calling eminem the rap artist of the day is stretching it a little.
well didn't he just win a bunch of Grammy's...I think that qualifies..or maybe rap artist of the moment.
It's stretching it to say that 10 years ago is still today, or the same moment. Eminem should have faded with the Spice Girls
well to be fair you can say the same about a lot of rock bands and artists. I mean I know very little about rap but I know in that world he is pretty legendary..and it is no different than a nostalgic rock band playing the Roo..people are not there to hear their new stuff...he is a big name and that is what Bonnaroo goes for to sell tickets.
Nah, his Faux-anger act is about as nostalgic as Candlebox, both had their moment and both had their moments pass. There are way more legitimate hip hop acts, though trying to think of any who haven't played 'Roo recently reminds me of the sad state of "big hip hop".
You know what would have made a HUGE difference? If Andre and BigBoi put their issues aside. An OutKast reunion would have put this show over the top
Man every festival I go to seems to contain WSP. I just cant get more than casually interested in them.
Hornsby will be a treat. Opeth? Wow, didnt see that coming.
I think Im gonna wait till a MMJ late night set is confirmed before I commit to going.
That undercard is insanely tempting. Just saw it once I got back to the computer. Shitty shit shit. Gah!!!
I can't go to 'roo, so I'm not going to get too caught up in all of this, but that lineup seems like a scheduling nightmare. I don't know how I could piece together an enjoyable weekend of overlapping acts, along with all of the other things that come with this fest. Its already been said, though... MMJ, Neil w/Buff. Springfield, Wanda Jackson means Jack White? Plant and Krauss, Grace Potter, Karen Elson w/Carl on steel? (another reason for Jack White to be lingering around)... christ its just too much for my middle-aged mind. :D

Do we know how long their set at Mountain Jam will be?
with Wanda and Loretta there ...in TN a Jack White drop in is a good chance.
Scheduling could be a nightmare...one thing you don't have to worry about at Mtn Jam or Hangout.
I agree with the WSP comment. All my friends down south worship them and i've seen them...i think they are ok but never a band I get excited for.
