Title: Brown Bird
Post by: wolof7 on Jan 08, 2011, 01:16 PM
I have probably pumped these guys before but I'll do it again. The 2 core members of the band actually live a few houses down from me and I hear them practice in the summertime. Dave Lamb (songwriter/vocalist) has a lot of similar qualities to Sam Beam(including my vote for greatest beard)...the music is standard singer/songwriter sound but also has some Balkan influence.
Take a listen!:  :)

Cool, glad you like!

Another interesting fact about the apt house they live in....their landlord is a new friend of mine as well as neighbor, the artist Will Schaff... He has done the artwork for each Okkervil River album (including their new one coming out this spring!) and the artwork for Songs: Ohia's brilliant Magnolia Electric Co. Will is also in an awesome renegade marching band (the "What Cheer? Brigade") you can check his artwork and band's music here:

So wait.  Will Schaff did artwork for Will Sheff's band?  What are the chances? ???

Ha yeah, Will Schaff (the artist) told me its kinda how they met, through a mutual friend who told him "you have to meet my friend who has practically the same name as you"...It was wild, I saw Will Sheff (of Okkervil) walkin down my street one day in October that's when I figured Okkervil had a new one in the works. Love these guys!  Just saw them recently at a loft where near where I live....also they opened up a show at a local bar by me for Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons..another great RI band you guys should check out.  A friend of mine films these "Kitchen Sessions" where bands show up at people houses and Brown Bird did one..very cool people too.

Hey alright!

Bold are you from RI, just curious? I always try and spread the local music on this board as I find the other members have been very receptive to the RI flavor. I've lived in various parts of MA and RI since forever, and am currently a resident of Warren an old Whaling town in RI. Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons are great (hoping to get my hands on White Lighter soon), in fact I first met David Lamb of Brown Bird when he played drums for JF and the WR when they opened for Alberta Cross and Phosphorescent at the Black Rep. Club in Oct. 2009! What a lineup!

That sounds like an amazing show!  I love Phosphorescent.  I'm from MA.  Joe Fletcher is coming back 2/5 to play the Plough and Stars.  There is also a great show at the Met in RI I think on 2/24 Brown Bird/Joe Fletcher and the lead singer from Devil Makes Three.  Great music scene in RI right now...and def get White Lighter, great album!

I am bumping this thread to inform those who don't know of the truly serious issue confronting David Lamb of Brown Bird. Amidst BB's most recent tour supporting their new album Fits of Reason, David had to be hospitalized for experiencing extreme lethargy and an illness of unknown etiology. Unfortunately, Both David and Morganeve had to cancel all of their upcoming shows in order for David to undergo diagnostic testing back in their home state of RI.

Last week, a diagnosis of Leukemia was given to David and he is now undergoing Chemotherapy tx. As most of us know, if you are an independent band these day,s touring and sales are pretty much the only way of means (and this does not include bene's like insurance). Considering the band's hiatus from touring for David to get the medical help he needs, David and Morganeve have reached out to fans for a bit of assistance and the outpouring of support seems to be helping.

I can honestly say that being from RI and watching the genesis of this band I have felt that not only are they a hardworking, touring band but also genuine artists. I have met David quite a few times over the years, I have been fortunate to call him a neighbor and have many joyful memories of hearing BB rehearse on the Whaling town street of which we lived...but most of all I can honestly say that David is a solid, humble and pleasant person who is driven by music and connecting with his fans on an artistic, and personal level.

If you have ever been a fan, seen a show, considered listening or are just a music fan in general please consider helping out. The link to donate is below with more info into the situation. Here in RI there are many opportunities to go to a benefit show but I know their fanbase reaches beyond the tiny ocean state and any help, I am sure would be appreciated and helpful. Thanks.
