Title: Neko Case
Post by: BH on Jan 13, 2011, 04:12 PM
I'm sad to see so many of the classic music threads dissapeared.   Here is one back in honor of mjk.   The new album [*middle cyclone] sounds so good with snow on the ground.

*edit ;)

Come back, mjk!

I didn't realize Neko owned the Cougar on the cover of that record -- being an old Mercury fan, I wished she had used one of these:

The snow is about gone here, but it's still goddamn cold, and I'm going to spin that record later. It's kinda nice to let the evening's listening choices be dictated by the forum sometimes.

Creepy, I was actually posting the same exact thing, then got distracted about 10 mins ago. I accidentally hit refresh, and I saw this thread appear and though "oh, I guess I did submit it"

But I didn't.

Weird.

Yep.

Or maybe,

I would say you have at least 3/5 of her cool.

(It'd be a higher ratio but she's pretty damn cool.)

Where's the best place to start for exploring her repertoire? Looks like she has a pretty extensive discography, and I'm mainly looking to familiarize myself with her music before seeing her open for the dudes.

Being that I trust you folks mostest for these sorts of things, I'd appreciate any guidance!

Blacklisted is my favorite, followed closely by Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. Middle Cyclone would be a good one to check into as well, since that is her most recent release and she'll probably be playing a lot of songs from that. The only one to avoid would be The Vrginian, you can't go wrong with any of her other albums.

What he said. The Tigers Have Spoken is a great live album. If you can get it, check out Canadian Amp. Very good EP. She does have 1 DVD from the ACL series. It's really good and worth checking out.

Okay, so I'm listening to Blacklisted right now.  I do like this more than anything else I've heard.  She does have a great voice and she is finer than all outdoors, but I just don't know...  She kind of makes me feel more like curling up in a fetal position than seeing her at a concert.

It's not the kind of show where the energy level is gonna be high, but it's a good sounding show. To add to what mjk said in another thread, the band is tight, especially Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel. Neko's voice sounds good live, and great chemistry between her and backup singer Kelly Hogan. The stage banter between Neko and Kelly is hilarious, and doesn't take away from the show. I've never heard anyone complain and yell at them to shut up and play.

100000000%. Jon is fantastic on steel, bango, and other guitar things. Paul Rigby her lead guitarist is excellent as well.

me too, have been into her for several years.  should clearly be the best warm up act i've ever seen at an mmj show (although i LOVED PHJB at MP last yr and i really like amos lee and enjoyed him at red rocks but he is a bit mellow for an mmj opener).

24 hours from now i hope to be drinking with all you good peeps in the MP parking lot  :D

I'd love to rec songs, but you know what, I would love to see your reaction the moment she starts to sing and you are just blow away by her voice. I'd go in a virgin for this one and come out a skanky whore.

As much as I love Neko and I've seen her a bunch of times, best opener for me was The Slip. That was my first show too. It's disappointing that that band hasn't done much since then. I completely missed Daniel Martin Moore last year.

She sounds completly different solo wise then with the NP's. Her voice is a force of nature and on the NP's it's very much contained IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love the Pornograpers and her songs are great with them, but her alt country folky stylings are a much better fit for her voice. her voice is the female equiv to JJ's. She's not singing to you, or at you, but absolutly through you.

I was looking through some of the MPP pictures and I think I figured out what her new arm tattoos say...one pretty clearly says "scorned as timber".  I googled that phrase and came up with this painting, called "Scorned as Timber, Beloved of Sky":
