This prompted an interesting discussion the other day, so I thought it might be interesting to try it here.
My vote for the biggest asshole in rock goes to..........AXL ROSE!!
Opinions?
hmm asshole is harder than douchebag. Ringo Starr is an asshole for sure. Worst beatle ever. Lars Ulrich? John Mayer isn't a rock star he's a pussy - otherwise he'd be top of the list for me.
Axl was absolutely the 1st person that came to mind.
Also that guy named Oasis and all the Misfits from Jem
also, on any given night...Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse or Jeff Tweedy can both be pretty big assholes, especially the former.

Ringo's an asshole? I never got that idea, and everything I've seen makes John Lennon seem like the asshole of the bunch, regardless of his well-deserved god status.
Roger Waters was a pretty big asshole, not sure if he still is.

I've got to agree. The Bieb is pretty bad :P
Not sure about now, but at my very first concert, Aerosmith in 1983, Steven Tyler was a drunk, snarling 10 ton asshole, spitting on the folks in the front rows, just a dick.
David Lee Roth always seemed to exhibit the qualities of the anus.
Ted Nugent?

I would have said Axel until I saw the pic of Ted.
Johnny Rotten and prob the rest of his band for me...It's crazy people looked up to them at one point...buncha talentless assholes

Ringo's a dbag for sure. a few years ago he was on howard stern and stern asked him a question about the beatles and Ringo was all "I don't want to talk about the beatles blah blah blah I've got a new record blah blah blah". it's like "wtf dude? you're the only beatle whose solo work hasn't made it into the rock n roll hall of fame...". barely remember it, maybe he's a nice dude, who knows. all I know is if I ever ask that bitch a question about the beatles he better fucking answer it or I'm going to punch him in the nuts.
Roger Waters does seem assholish for sure. good call.

Kinda weak picks folks.
Here's a few for you to chew on (but the first a-hole is my #1):
Chad Kroeger, Jewel, Ke$ha, John Lydon, Sean Combs, Kanye, R Kelly, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace frontman), all members of Kings of Leon, Eddie & Alex Van Halen, Billy Joel, Marilyn Manson, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, the Gallagher brothers, Billy Bob Thornton (he counts as a country a-hole), Mickey Hart, Mike Gordon, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jeff Martin (frontman from defunct Canadian trio, Tea Party - he's just a big a prick as Kroeger, but most of you don't know who he is... but trust me), and of course, Lauryn Hill.

I'm not saying I don't like some of the work from the artists I listed. I love Van Halen (pre-Hagar), but Alex and Eddie are notorious jerks, especially in the way they treated Mike Anthony. Andrew Lloyd qualifies because he's a rock opera/theatre pioneer - and a class A asshole too. Most of the "fringe rock" artists I listed can be categorized as pop stars, so I stretched it a bit. I forgot to add Gordon Lightfoot. I'm friends with his first-cousin and hear from him that he's a fucking asshole.

He fronts "30 Seconds from Mars" or "30 Secs to Mars". He also used to be Jordan Catalano in My So Called Life. I remember reading some articles about him around the time he played Mark David Chapman in a film, I think it was titled "27". He's just a total emo-douche.
He played a festival on the beach here last October and he was just jackass. All the teenyboppers loved him though so maybe it's just me that's out of touch...

Where would I start? Being drunk. Air guitaring and playing Minor Threat and Madonna on a 45 record player (entire songs), singing an entire song like the "Cookie Monster", reading Sylvia Plath (how emo), having the house lights turned up-finding the guy who yelled Summer of 69 (Bryan Adams, get it?) - and giving the guy $20 to leave, he'd spend minutes just walking around stage "looking for stuff" -wine glass, wine bottle, guitar, flowers, poems, 45 records..., while playing drums on a Dylan cover (Joey) with Dave Rawlings and Gilllian Welch- he stopped playing and went backstage and retrieved a bottle of wine and didn't have the rock n' roll courtesey of drinking it from the bottle-no- he poured it into a wine glass-and it was a red wine glass (the proper glass).
It was a fuking train wreck and he literally spent nearly 30 minutes on stage "not playing music"
As he went off stage before the encore (Rawlings/Welch) over half the audience left. Some guy in the local paper lambasted his performance and Adams left him a long voice mail here

Mike Gordon? Really? Please elaborate. I've met Mike a few times, and chatted with him briefly. He is indeed an awkward goofball, and not always the biggest people person, but asshole? hmm.
I for one do not blame Ryan Adams for going off on shitbirds who yell for Summer of '69 -- yeah, it was a funny joke ONCE. I think giving the guy 20 bucks to leave is a pretty good bit. The rest of the stuff...no, that's not cool.
And holy SHIT, I just listened to his voicemail rant, and he sounds EXACTLY like my last insane girlfriend. /shivers
(Still love his music)
I've saw Ryan Adams play 3 times since the January of '08, and during them 3 shows 2 have been great and 1 was average at best. I saw the KC show during February '09, and he played for roughly an hour before leaving. I was stunned when the house lights came on. The next night he played Tulsa and it was a great show. My Ryan Adams obsessiveness is similar to a lot of MMJ people on here. On his fan forum http://ryanadamsarchive.com/ (http://ryanadamsarchive.com/) he goes through phases of interacting with the fans and then getting mad at the fans. His most recent tirade came because how long it took for people to receive III/IV from his record company, Pax-Am. I love the guy's music and the few times I have met him he has seemed fairly nice, but I can understand him being mentioned in this thread.
Went to a Ryan Adams show 2 years ago expecting the worst. I've heard the stories - the walk offs, the cussing out of audience members, pretentiousness, all of it. Buyer beware I guess.
It was my first show too, so I didn't know what to expect, but had low expectations.
Ranks as the greatest "blew away my expectations" show ever. People were obnoxious, and on the recording of the show you can hear him mocking people yelling from the audience, but in no more of a stage banter way that was playful, if anything.
I probably just caught him on a goodnight; rose to one of my favorite shows ever though.

ringo blows dude. solid studio drummer and masterful douchebag are his main personality traits. he's the only beatle that was hired into the band. he is the only beatle who hasn't been inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame for his studio work. all of the songs he sings for the beatles suck for the most part. to me the guy should be thanking god or whatever magical force is out there for making him as rich as he is. ringo blows dick for sure. ringo blows dude. solid studio drummer and masterful douchebag are his main personality traits. he's the only beatle that was hired into the band. he is the only beatle who hasn't been inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame for his studio work. all of the songs he sings for the beatles suck for the most part. to me the guy should be thanking god or whatever magical force is out there for making him as rich as he is. ringo blows dick for sure. Harrison and Lennon were my favorites. McCartney kinda blows dick too. some of his basslines are hot to trot tho. she's so heavy is some good music.

Jesus told them to be assholes, so it's OK.
Axl Rose was a right twat the only time I saw him live. Then again, having come on stage 30 minutes late, left again, and finally returned all the while threatening to leave for good, he proceeded to nail all of Guns 'n' Roses best ones with an astonishing live voice.
I've heard that Billy Corrigan, Corgan?, Whatever his name is from The Smashing Pumpkins, is just a total Douche Bag.
David Lee Roth was already mentioned, but he's a tool.
And Lenny Kravitz is an ass.
But I try not to spread the hate around. At least all of those guys get to do what they love each and every day, so you gotta give 'em props for that. Assholes or not, they're all still people ;)

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. :) They do what they love because they created that life for themselves. Just like you can, just like I can, just like anyone else can. Happiness isn't handed out at random where you just get lucky if you get it and you're SOL if you don't. You create your own happiness. So they don't owe anyone jack shit. As far as acting like douchers... Well thats just probably not ever necessary.

The operative word in all of this is ACT. The "assholes" created their own lives and can be happy if they choose to be, but they can ACT however they'd like. It isn't about passing judgment on whether they're truly happy or not its how they act towards others that makes us judge them as douches or not. We're judging an act, not much different than judging a movie... who knows what these people are truly like. But the original point was that Crispy said they shouldn't act like douchers because they manifested their own lives.... which is what I disagreed about.

Hang on there, Cheetara, I wasn't saying that people who get to do what they love got that way because circumstances fell into their laps and that they should be grateful to everyone else for that, no sirree. I'm of the opinion that nobody should ever act like a doucher to anybody else, deservedly or not, and I think acting civilized should be even easier for those who are fortunate -- yes, I said fortunate -- to have been able to make a happy life for themselves.

I agree, people shouldn't act like douchers, ever really. :) Its not necessary and spreads negativity.
I didn't mean that people who manifested their own lives owed gratitude to others, I meant civility.
But I don't agree that they were
fortunate to have been able to do that. We're all able to, no matter the circumstances. And anyone can
Act how they would like, although doucherness is never appreciated or necessary. Just trying to disagree respectfully, its kind of hard via written word sometimes :) Didn't mean to come off as verbally attacking or anything. ;)

fortunate to have had less obstacles in the way of attaining what they wanted, but more obstacles doesn't make it impossible or rubbish. The only things that are impossible are the ones that we limit ourselves from. ;)

speaking of knee-jerk reactions... while i mostly tend to view the world thru rose colored glasses & also believe that we do have the power to control our own destiny (or density as our beloved george mcfly referred to it as) i also understand that the world is NOT perfect and fair & just as i wish it were.
so i respectfully find fault in the belief that every being on this planet is able to rise above their circumstances. i really do wish it was so.
life is what you make of it. but not everyone has access to the same tools & resources as others.

My color blind nephew wants to fly jets for the Navy

Do you know how many gifted musicians bust their asses their whole lives to play the Ryman in Nashville and NEVER get there? But they got to watch Ashley Simpson play the Ryman.
I see your point b/c I used to think like you. Do you see my point?
Happiness is certainly achievable and the ability to transcend the things we cannot do is a great place to start. But to say, "The only things that are impossible are the ones that we limit ourselves from" is simply not true. And I think that's Crispy's point. Cherish your opportunity and fortune to be able to do what you love for a living, and don't be a douche b/c not everyone gets to do that.
So excuse me but I have to run off now and brush up on my Spanish. It's always been my dream to be a dictator of a small, South American country.
KOL
Ynwa- Nice! Gotta love some Panthro  But the female badassery of Cheetara always made me smile ;)
I think that you can overcome any circumstance, and trust me, I have seen some people with incredibly fucked up circumstances, I'm talking things that others just don't come back from and go on to live in institutions for, prosper in situations that others would wither away in.
Don't limit your thought, don't limit yourself. I can't count the number of times that I've said something about pushing through and using the obstacles as a learning experience instead of a stop sign and had people blatantly call me an idiot or any other word you could come up with for delusionsal and berate me and try to make me look like a fool. I don't know why people don't like to hear that. There tends to be this prevalent view in society that Only a special sort of person can persevere and that the rest of us are doomed to our circumstance, and should stop because we can only do so much. You've just limited yourself if you've said that. What I want to know is...
WHO THE FUCK EVER PUT THAT THOUGHT INTO YOUR HEAD??? ::)
If no one ever said that, if you never thought about it, would you even feel that way? Would you change your life? Would you have done things differently? Would you have taken that walk on the wild side? Who would you be if you hadn't of limited yourself. You're a beautiful person and capable of ANYTHING, we all are. :)
Lets take someone famous, Oprah, for example. She was born into poverty by a teenage mother, was sexually molested by multiple family members as a child, got raped and became pregnant at 14, and Went on to become what she is today, not only filthy rich but a world icon.
If you were her today, what would you have done?
She was NO different from you or me. She wasn't some super breed of human that has the gene for perserverence. She just didn't limit herself. Its TRULY that simple. Please don't limit yourself ever Ynwa! :)
Tracy-I do see your point. And I think that it is sad that you feel the way you do now. :'( I'm not trying to be patronizing when I say that you or your color-blind nephew (and I certainly hope he's encouraged by his family to follow his dreams whatever they may be :)) could do anything they wanted in life, nor am I delusional for saying it. If you want it, you can have it, if you believe you can. Whoever put it out there and spread it around that you couldn't was an evil person. But I know from first hand experience that the only things that are impossible are the ones you limit yourself from. We have so many wonderful examples of people perservering, I just wish that more people realized that they could to. Think what you like, but I won't become jaded, even after all the shit I've seen. And It would have been sooo easy to have become that way. Don't limit yourself either Tracy. If you want it, its yours. :)
So appreciate all of the small things, they are life's little miracles. Smile. Spread joy and compassion around. Love yourself and know yourself, and DON"T limit yourself. We get this ONE experience of life in our current bodies. Its entirley to short to not be happy and do what you love.
Have a lovely day, Everyone! :)

3. Consider a reverse michael Jackson operation or a serious spray tan if you don't already have a rich chocolatey color, it'll make the other players relate to you better
4. Sweatbands are your friend. Bonus points if you can grow a Fro for it to go around

nice bump fully! I forgot about the conversation I had with Sticky just using Big Lebowski youtube quotes.
Jeff Martin of the Tea Party - total douche canoe. Alienlanes witnessed him going off on some non-musician in the bathroom at an industry party. The non-musician guy was a very tall, very muscular black man and Martin said, "You better get out of my way, boy." The non-musician guy was then restrained by two other men in the bathroom lest he flatten Jeff "I'm a racist tool" Martin.
Also, at the same party, Burton Cummings of the Guess Who was also a drunken douche railing to whoever would listen about how he was a big important artist and everyone was against him, keeping him down.
Same party, I touched Dave Grohl's butt. I just sort of brush up against him and brushed my hand against his rear all stealth like. He turned around and smiled. Such a charmer!

I hate The Tea Party and I've known Martin is an a-hole for over 20 years (he used to date my old roommate when I went to Ryerson; he fucking played my guitar when I wasn't home too... and the songs were probably his early Tea Party shit). BTW, nobody in the US knows The Tea Party; I'm extremely jealous.

all of those Ryan Adams stories are from before he got sober.
And I am such a fan that honestly none of that changes a thing for me. I have had the pleasure of seeing him many times and never once did he disappoint or act like an asshole, a bitch, a spoiled brat, etc, etc. And I had one of the thrills of my life when I got to meet him in NYC a few years ago and he was as sweet and kind as can be.
People are always and still bashing him and I don't blame him for having to be defensive sometimes. And he used to be very regularly under the influence and with that surely comes some bad behavior.
But the man is as good as it gets when it comes to singing and song writing.

Behaving like that once makes you an asshole, doing it more than once makes you an even bigger asshole, doing it in every interview might just make you the biggest asshole in rock (or its just an attention-seeking act). I didn't know he did that all the time, I've never read or heard an interview with him before this one, but I've never had any interest in punk rock at all, not even for its socio-political historical-ness or whatever. I'm basically a peace-loving hippie, though.
Folks shouldn't take Johnny Lydon seriously. He does almost every interview with faux contempt and a twinkle in his beady little eye. He's pretends to hate everything and other styles of music, but he's actually friends with members of some bands he trashes. He's a creation, a caricature. I don't get too worked up about him since this isn't 1977. When it comes down to it, many musicians, especially guitarists and front men, are fucking egomanical assholes. Same with actors, although they tend to be more vapid talking heads.
Anyone who has a wife, and kids, and says his biggest fear in life is losing his hair, is an asshole. This among a few other gems means Jon Bon Jovi wins biggest asshole in rock hands down for me.
I once stood next to him at a killer Bruce show, and he just stood there with his arms folded, and a scowl on his face for about an hour straight with this look of waiting to be impressed. Such an asshole!
It might be a little wrong saying this here but conor oberst can be an asshole. I met him once and complimented him on the show but he just looked at me and didn't say a word. The only way I can describe it is like a "too cool" "snobby rich kid" type of vibe. I'm sure he's a good guy but that interaction really hurt since I'm a huge fan. Jim James on the other hand is one the best meetings ever . Such a nice a guy and happyto talk and take pics. John Darnell's of the mountain goats is kind of a jerk also. I met him and held my hand out for a handshake and he gave me his left hand. Which is a little dis. Then kinda embarassed me a bit. Oh well.
I don't care for Conor whatsoever. He definitely comes across as a total ass. Surprised there has been no discussion of this in all the OBH threads, but I thought Conor was a total prick for coming on stage obviously anebriated, dancing around almost knocking shit over. Dude...nobody came to see you! Then when he comes back out for the encore he spills half a beer on himself and the stage. Attention whore much? I know people will defend him but I found him to be beyond disrespectful to MMJ and their fans at OBH.
This topic is pretty old, but I think Chad Kroeger is still reigning champ. Scott Stapp has made inroads to dethrone Kroeger, but not enough from where I'm sitting. Kanye isn't a rocker, or he'd be the new champion.
Not old, as my thoughts have evolved since this thread started, I now think its Sharon Osbourne, she recorded over Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake years ago, screwed Jake E Lee, and coordinated a juvenile shut off of Iron Maiden's power during the Ozzfest then Kelly and Ozzy's crew threw eggs at Maiden. Shes an asshole, now every day on TV. Maybe this should be in the Heavy Metal thread. :drum:

I once stood next to him at a killer Bruce show, and he just stood there with his arms folded, and a scowl on his face for about an hour straight with this look of waiting to be impressed. Such an asshole!
Bruce >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bon Jovi
Bon Jovi sucks.
I can't help myself. I've worked in live music for 20 years, toured the world, yadda yadda. Met more than a couple assholes but one stands out for me as the most memorably and uniquely awful. I'm not going to say his name, but his daddy owns a modelling agency and handed him his career on a silver platter.
Not just among musicians, but humans I've met, I've never encountered such an intense combination of spoiled entitlement and arrogance coupled with a lack of actual skill. Its one thing to be demanding if you've got the goods to back it up, but this guy couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag. He couldn't make it to callbacks at a middle school choir audition. And yet...millions of copies sold.
Noel and Liam Gallagher never struck me as nice individuals. But this article about Scott Weiland that I saws today is pretty timely for this thread:

I guess that his last name is the plural form of a classic 20th century film...

That's my guess too. If the hint is so obvious, why not name him.

AH! Haha thanks!
Heh, that was all way more fun than me just saying it!
Half of what I say is meaningless, but still I say it just to reach his similarly named sister.
I'm not picking up the hints
I'm hoping this is not in reference to the Strokes...
Cause I would have to STRONGLY disagree..
Asshole? Quite possibly
But bad singer? Sorry I don't agree
yes, Julian Casablancas.
Shits weak...
Strokes and Julian are awesome
As much as I hate to admit it since he is from my home state and I actually enjoy a lot of his songs and performances... Kid Rock is a pretty ignorant asshole even among rock stars
for sure. also his music is awful.

But I don't agree that they were fortunate to have been able to do that. We're all able to, no matter the circumstances.
Sorry, but that's pie-in-the-sky rubbish.
If thats what you believe, the yes. It will only ever be rubbish. They may have been fortunate to have had less obstacles in the way of attaining what they wanted, but more obstacles doesn't make it impossible or rubbish. The only things that are impossible are the ones that we limit ourselves from. ;)
right cheetara, dream on.
I want to play point guard in the NBA
My color blind nephew wants to fly jets for the Navy
My mother wants to be able to walk up a flight of stairs
You're gonna need a haircut.
Maybe I missed it but no mention of Maynard James Keenan (am I an asshole if I qualify this by saying that I'm not a huge fan of his various bands but my friends are)? He's created drama at every show I've seen and three shows were cut significantly short for one reason or another. He stopped mid-song at a Perfect Circle show to take a fake phone call on his cell and proceeded to tell the audience that his wine (he has vineyards in AZ) won some bullshit award. There's also that video of him choking out a skinny 110# fan that got on stage.
Ted Nugent, not relevant to rock anymore or ever, is certainly the biggest asshole in the world.
