They are about to head out on an extensive tour again, chances are that they will be in or near your town (yes, even those of you in Europe...and DB they will be in London on April 7th!).

*I just love these guys!
love these guys...can't wait to see them at Hangout Fest.
Saw them a year ago or so. Great show, good vibe and catchy songs!
Amazing set at Sasquatch last year. Can't f'n wait to see them at Bonnaroo. I absolutely love all their albums and their live energy. For those who haven't seen them...DO IT!
Just getting into them (thanks Darkglow) and really enjoying their sound! Can't wait to see them at Hangout!
How is their latest album ? I only know the Satanic Satanist which I really enjoy listening to.
Well, well, well....what can I say.
This set at Hangout was by far my favorite --- ya know, after the Jacket set of course. I have only heard a few of their songs, only studio versions. Well, the live experience was just mind blowing for me. I was literally knocked out after this set. Might have been the blazing sun, frozen margaritas, and mistys BUT I really think it was their energy and sound that just knocked me out. I literally had to go back to the condo to cool off in the pool afterwards.
Their sound was matched only be the awesome experience of sharing it Ruckus, Ky, Penny, Mike, Bold 99, and Raj. Though, as per usual for me, I was kinda in my own little world...... Cannot wait to see them again!!!!!
Thanks to Darkglow and Bold for introducing me to these guys, they RAWK!
my first PTM show and they are the real deal...unfortunately, i had to get out of the sun and head to the shaded tent...but i saw a lot of the set and really loved them...great stage presence and he has a great voice...

It hasn't been released yet, but the couple songs they released via their facebook page are sick. They are playing them live right now too...
Speaking of live...

Good thing you will have a chance to see them at Mountain Jam then!
Don't worry, they are tour warriors! They will be back in the tri-state area again before long. However, they are growing in popularity so these small venue shows should be relished. Last year when we saw them at the Roseland here in Portland it was more than half empty. This past April it was close to sold out. Lucky for me (and a small collection of friends), they will be playing a house party for us this August :D
Can't wait to catch them live again! Webster Hall sounds sweet, but I have plans that night for a friend's birthday. Drats!
The House show, Wizzard, sounds amazing!!!!!!!

It is going to be unreal for sure....
We "bought" them through a charity auction last December and have struggled to find a weekend that works with the band and with us. But it looks like we found a weekend in August that works for everyone. Now we just need to find the right house to host. I want it in my backyard, but I am unsure if the neighbors would be down. I know some wouldn't mind one bit, but others....well they are curmudgeons.

So, a friend, well more of an acquaintance really, just posted a review of Bonnaroo which included this:
Preservation Hall Jazz Band Parade and Portugal. The Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIPROVr8vyI#ws)
as one of his highlights. Note the familiar face on the bass drum. :)

Was just going to post this! Got this sent to me this morning with this quote from the blog:
following the Dr. John/Meters/ Toussaint "Destively Bonnaroo" late set on Sat, there was a walking parade though Centeroo which included The Pres Hall Band, members of MMJ including Patrick and Jim (i can't really recall if was playing anything but was marching with all of us) and Stanton and prob others from Galactic. It started with a few dozen of us then seemed like we picked up a lot of passengers as it took the long way towards the cinema tent. Where next to it was a giant Mr. T head Mardi Gras float cloaked in smoke and lights with Portugal The Man on top waiting for the circus to arrive. They then played about 30-45 min where they REALLY catered to the mindset of the assembled. It was one of my favorite experiences, musically and otherwise, from all 10 years I've been to the festival.
We may have some friends in common. I am a far flung NYC Freak now, but an NYC Freak none-the-less. :)
quite possible Nova...my friend who emailed that to me is originally from Long Island.

I love PTM. I might go! wish it was a weekend show.
I will be going a few nights later in Boston, but I confess I've never heard their music. But I like Alberta Cross, who's opening, and lots of good word of mouth for PTM has finally motivated me to get started getting to know them.

So I've been PTM immersion mode for a few days now. Man they have a lot of albums!
If someone knowledgable about the band could give me a few pointers as to which songs are considered the "classics", that'd be very helpful. Obviously I'll learn the whole new album but trying to digest 6 albums at once is a big bite to swallow... surely there are some oldies that are live staples?
Thanks! Have not listened to the new album yet but have heard the other 5 at least 3 times through each. So far I like the Satanist one best.

Here's a few standouts from each album (in my opinion at least, not sure if they're necessarily fan favorites):
Waiter: You Vultures!: How the Leopard Got its Spots
Kill me. The King
Church Mouth: Shade
Bellies are Full
Censored Colors:Colors
1989
The Satanic Satanist:I can honestly say I love them all of this album (they also have an all-acoustic release for this album that's worth checking out)
American Ghetto:All My People
1000 Years
As for the new album, well you be the judge!
just got my tix for T5....(oh that's deja-vous-ish)
So after reading all the good stuff about these guys, I finally took the time to check them out. You're not kidding - they're good. Better than good. I'm only into song 3 or 4 and I already dig their sound.

Was just reading about how they got their van and all their gear stolen at Lollapalooza this weekend. Really messed up. I hope they get it all back.

oh man, i read that as well. totally bummed out for them. my friend's husband is in a band and the same thing happened to them a few yrs back when they were in florida.
totally sucks. >:(
So, can anyone that's seen the band live give an opinion on their performance? I LOVE this band and watched their streaming set from Lolla yesterday. Not sure if it was the quality of the broadcast, the sound system or what, but I was just really disappointed. It just didnt translate very well live to me. Anyone else watch? Opinions?
i didn't see the stream, but saw them live at the Hangout Fest in May, and they were Ahhhhhhh-mazing! Just got my tix to see them in October at T5!
he.who.forgets, I always advise to never judge a bands' chops from a festival performance. PTM is off the hook live. I have seen them a few times now, all massive.
I am so bummed about their gear. Thieves are low lives. Scum. Zach (their bassist), who has always been nothing but a doll to me and my friends, just breaks my heart in this video:
http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Lolla-Bands-Van-Gear-Stolen-127249388.html (http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Lolla-Bands-Van-Gear-Stolen-127249388.html)
They have a gig here at the Crystal Ballroom next Monday, not sure if it will happen. However, the Portland music scene is tight and I can see them being able to round up some gear in time. But I am a little worried about our PTM party. It is slated for the end of the month....
sux big time. i hope they find their stuff....some beautiful equipment they have, and to see it all get stolen just like that is unbelievable. AND in an attended lot nonetheless. WTF. I sure hope everything works out for them.....and you :)
Here is the gear list:

we were admiring those gretch guitars @ hangout. bummer, everything......
thanks for the comments tbd & wizzard...this is certainly reassuring. Sucks big time about their gear!
Thats terrible about their gear...Hard to believe their rides werent protected at a festival, especially one thats downtown in a major city.
I had heard of them for 2-3 years, and I listened to a couple songs around then, but for whatever reason that was that. A friend asked me for album recs a few days ago, on top of what I already said from 2011, so I gave PTM's new album a listen and loved it from the start, actually listening right now. Think Ive spun it almost daily for a week now. I did watch their Lolla set stream, and was impressed. I busted my hdmi cable so it was just my laptop speakers so I wasnt worried about the sound really, but Im quickly becoming a big fan. I think they have shades of Bowie, the Beatles, T-Rex, and a more recent band. Still not sure if Ive pinpointed that band, but they closed their set with Oasis' "Dont Look Back In Anger"..Id hardly call myself an Oasis fan, but that song and Champagne Supernova are special to me, and after hearing that, they do have a bit of Oasis. Still think there's a more recent band than that that they remind me of somewhat.
So, I liked what I saw from the stream. More than anything though, Im amazed that somehow every chorus on the new album sounds catchy as hell. That's a rarity. They got me hooked. Now to delve deeper. Where should I start?

Same here. Plus, I didn't like their name so they had that against them, too.
side note - I also didn't like the name My Morning Jacket. You would think that after them I would maybe not hold a band's name against them anymore, but noooooo. ::)

I watched and I was a little unimpressed to be honest. I'm a very recent convert to PTM as you'll read if you look earlier in the thread, but I've been listening to their albums on heavy rotation lately. I wasn't grabbed at all by the performance and found myself a littel bored.
I'm going to see them in October and not worried yet - I know a daytime slot at a festival, streaming over the internet, isn't the best way to judge a band. Give me a crowded bar and a few beers. Still, it is interesting to hear your perspective was similar.
That effin' sucks about their gear. All I have to say is KARMA. PTM will survive this set back and hopefully, they'll get their gear back.
Keep in mind if their shit does turn up on Craigslist, IT IS POSSIBLE TO TRACK THE FUCKERS DOWN.
Seriously. Some police departments are like "oh man CL is anonymous! we're screwed" and if they just sent a subpoena or two they'd get what they need.

Amazing! Such great news!
They are stll missing some important guitars (white falcon, fender precision special...), but getting most of it back is pretty awesome.
Yay! This fantastic story was just what I needed this morning given the stock market is tanking again and has me all jacked up.
Rock on, PTM.

Keep your eyes peeled on ebay and craigslist over the next months. I am positive that whoever has them knows they are valuable and unique. They are probably hoping for the hype to die down. There is a reward, FYI.
And whoever has them definitely cannot even begin to contain the power that the Gretsch white falcon holds...

They are playing a run of shows with Alberta Cross!!! Let's hope P.TM are equipped for this, sounds like they're getting there!
You are kidding, right? ???

This should be awesome, wonder if this is a co-headlining Tour?
Alberta Cross is definitely opening for PTM. That is PTM's tour for their new album that you just listed.
Haha sorry Wiz meant no disrespect, was referring to their loss of equipment not their live skills, never seen'em...would love to!
Also just getting into P.TM and am psyched to dig deeper forgot they have quite a few releases! Glad they have Alberta Cross on board, certainly a criminally underrated band!
Oh man, no worries! Didn't realize you meant equipped with gear ;D
side note: Yes, I am seriously protective of these boys (same level of love and protection I have for MMJ).Good lord lets hope they get those guitars back soon!
crossing fingers that they show up in time for our party
I saw on WGN here in Chicago the other day that their equipment has been recovered from a South Side apartment here and that there was one person arrested in the theft.
PtM sent the Chicago police dept. 5 dozen doughnuts as thanks for recovering the equipment. hehe...

They are still missing some pretty fly guitars and keyboards. HOWEVER, per their twitter page, it looks like Gretsch and Gibson kicked them down some nice replacements.

So...umm...so we had this little party on Saturday with PTM and...well...not to rub it in, but it was off-the-motherfucking-hook! Truly an epic experience!
They sounded great (first "public" appearance with the new gear). Jason needed a new drum kick after the party, cuz' they rock that hard. It went so well, they loved our space (our friend's glass studio) that maybe...perhaps someday...we will do it again. Oh and to top it off, we had enough flow to get AgesandAges to open for PTM. They are just super too!

Aww sweets, if I had an invite to give I would have in a heartbeat. Band's management were keeping us tight at 50 people, and ~20 of those peeps were with the band.

Oh, I keed, I keed, not like I could get a sitter that fast anyway. Speaking of kids, I think I'm gonna go to the AgesandAges/Cass McCombs MFNW opener on 9/11 at Kennedy. It's for the kiddos, but sounds fairly sweet (read: show for kids/beer for parents).Woot!
I'll get to the glass studio one of these days though!! :-*
So I'm about a month into my PtM immersion plan.
I'm finding a lot of the songs sound similar. There's a few that stand out, but many blur together. Is that a fair criticism of this band, or just the result of cramming 5 albums in my head at once on heavy rotation shuffle?
Regardless, I'm looking forward to the show, and know they have a good live reputation.
Hey g33tah I find it to be the same but it dosent bother me bc most of the tracks are plain awesome...Alexis decribes their music as if MGMT and the singer of Mars Volta had a magic show that they performed on Zoloft! Never heard quite the description but I can dig it.
I only have the newest album and The Satanic Satanist which I feel is a bit more varied. where should I go next?
Also purchased tickets for the Paradise show 2 nights ago! Can't wait for them and Alberta Cross. If you've never heard Broken Side of Time, you should give it a listen. I"ve been a big fanboy of that album around these parts...I've seen them once and they were extremely impressive!

I am a big fan of Alberta Cross and it's what caused me to buy the Paradise tix myself and learn PtM.
I'd get American Ghetto - then you'd know the 3 most recent albums which seems pretty thorough concert prep. I like the music too, hope I wasn't seen as complaining (did enough of that on the Rolling Stones thread!)
Big Alberta Cross fan myself...discovered them when they opened for Ben Harper a year or so ago and they flat out killed live. Ben Harper then proceeded to put me to sleep. Anyway, I agree that if you have the two most recent, you should just keep working backwards to Censored Colors, Church Mouth, and Waiters...I think their older stuff will give you a little more variation too once you get there.
Just saw their performance on Conan from last night. I thought they sounded and looked great! Can't wait to see them next monh!

Harsh review. Im surprised he didnt bring up how similar all the songs sound.
I was watching monday night football on, well monday, and after a commercial break they came back in with Got It All. I was pretty shocked.

Will that link actually show it at 6?
I dont see anything on that link and it says 6pm on there
that home page http://www.lomography.com/ (http://www.lomography.com/) says it will be streaming on there at 7:30
Nice find, thanks!
Cool to hear them acoustic, although bummer that they played 2+ hours and only streamed like 45 minutes if I understood everything correctly
Saw my first PtM show last night, had a blast. Many thanks to Kyle for scoring the tix and stage edge (no rail). Still processing the music. Their recordings and You Tube vids sound great, but perhaps I was too close last night and lost some of the mix? I could hear the girls singing behind me better than I could hear Gourley's vocals.
I'm curious if PtM consider themselves a 4-man or 5-man band? Most photos exclude Noah Gersh, who joined the band from HoneyChild. HoneyChild had opened for both PtM and Alberta Cross in the past.
Anyway, part of the reason I asked is there was a tour poster signed by the band, but it has only 4 signatures. I went on a little research, as I didn't know the guys' names, and saw that Gersh seems excluded from many mentions and photos.
The second sig is John Gourley and the last is Jason Sechrist. Can't make out the other two. There's Ryan Neighbors and Zachary Carothers. And is it Noah Gersh who's missing? (EDIT - I'm quite certain Gersh's sig is missing, based on another signed poster (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Signed-In-Person-PORTUGAL-MAN-Gig-Concert-POSTER-/400245923178?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d30841d6a) from before he joined the band).

I will answer to the best of my knowledge:
The core is John, Zach, Ryan and Jason. I first saw Noah play with them this May, when they played for the home town crowd and first debuted a couple songs off of the new album. Before I had only seen them as a 4-some. Except once, because they had Zoe with them on vocals for that show. Jason and Ryan are not "founding members" but they all mesh together well with this line up. Excited to see what Noah brings to table over time...I (surprisingly ::)) love 2 guitarists sharing a stage.
So I guess the short answer = 5

Its interesting, because Noah brings a lot to the stage - guitar, drum, bongos, synth drum pad, etc. He is surrounded by a lot of equipment and didn't move around much, 'cept when he joined Alberta Cross near the end of their opening set, along with PtM's keyboardist, Ryan Neighbors. Noah seemed to be providing mostly rhythm guitar and other instrument fillers, leaving the more intricate guitar work to Gourley.
Thanks for the info, Ms. Wiz!
I thought it was a great double bill show at he 'dise last Sat, Johnny and G33tah, great to see you guys!!
PtM were extremely impressive, I would definitely check them out again, great energy, great stage design, etc,. Johnny I agree about the vocals but the whole show was so loud so it prob drowned out the clarity of Gourley's voice. There were spots where I could hear him better. We had to move a bit back due to overcrowding and general rowdiness 2 songs before the end of the set. There were some chicks there were just, ugh, ignorant.
I am not gonna judge people for crowd surfing, hell I used to when I was a teenager and it was fun....but it's soooo fricking irresponsible, annoying and ignorant towards others. I was surprised the band didn't say anything bc people were not having it and it wasn't working.
Great set by Alberta Cross, love that band, they rock hard. Coulda played 1 or 2 more tracks from 'Broken Side of Time,' but it was all good. I was gonna scream Rise From the Shadows if they didnt play it within 2 songs and they ended up playing it so I was satisfied! Johnny the lead singer was right up on you huh? :embarassed:

Got hit in the face by Stackee's mic chord, almost hit by the neck of his guitar and whipped by a broken string, definitely got some sweat on me. PtM had a bit more room once AC's equipment was off stage, so they didn't play in my lap so much. I agree with everything you said and continue to listen to some PtM recordings this week. Here are a couple of vids from our show, the first the Bowie cover, the second has our stage-diving crowd-surfing oaf.

PtM. Good show. Good to see Wolof and Johnny Yac.
I knew nothing of PtM a few months ago but underwent full immersion, cramming 6 of their albums into my head when I saw they were coming to town w/ Alberta Cross, and on the recommendation of some forum members. A few times along the way I wondered if I was going to listen to them once the show was over. But, it was ultimately worthwhile. I have a new band I like and respect, and they put on a strong live show.
We got in early – see pic of Johnny Yac enjoying his private rail position:
But the place was certainly PACKED by showtime. Sticking with much from the new album as well as a few good covers, they played hard for about 90 minutes. The crowd was definitely into them.... People were probably looking at Johnny Yac and I like "who are these people"... as were obviously not FANS (although we certainly enjoyed ourselves)... two old guys, on the rail no less, and I knew most of the choruses for most of the songs, but for sure we weren't living and dying with every note. In fact, it always surprises me when I seen people react with MMJ-like enthusiasm at shows that aren't MMJ – like, oh, there are other bands that people feel crazy passionate about? So it was all most amusing, if just for the people watching. Except for the crowd surfer, yes, Wolof, that guy was an idiot.

a post on facebook has re-obsessed me with this band. Ive seen them only once but it was just amazing. They covered Helter Skelter and did a hey jude outro.... similar to this:
Sleep Forever with Hey Jude Outro - Portugal. the man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vOO7_fcA_4#)
I wouldn't have expected them to jam live like they do. good shit
Funny you bump this now as I had not thought about or listened to them basically since 2011 at some point but when I was watching something on youtube a couple days ago they popped up on the "recommended for you" list they have on the right now above related videos and I watched a few things. Totally forgot how much I loved In The Mountain, In The Cloud which was my introduction to them and favorite album from 2011. Now that Spotify is around I really gotta check out the rest of their catalogue.
I then checked out their site to see if theyre touring, theyre playing 10 or shows this summer but only in like a few states. Kind of odd for a band that released an album every year for 6 years straight from 2006-2011 to not have any news out coming out almost 2 years since their last one, or am I missing something?!
There was some turnover in the band if I remember right? In the Mountain... was one of my favorites from 2011 as well. I immediately dove into their discography and really enjoyed several other albums. The Satanic Satanist and the acoustic version Majestic Majesty are both great, as is Censored Colors. Their music is so damn infectious and their live shows are joyous.

There was some turnover, Jason (drummer) just left the band with no announcement or reason given. Ryan (keyboards) left not too long after that to do his own thing. This all happened right before a big tour. Then Jason's replacement quit mid-show or something dramatic like that on that tour.
They seem to be regrouping and I'm pretty fucking stoked that they are currently working with Danger Mouse. Viva PtM!!

That sounds like a sweet combination!!
Not like Im a huge devoted fan of the band, but the keys player always struck me as someone who looked like he wanted to do something else besides being a musician. For all I know your statement means he wants just do solo stuff, but thats the impression I got from limited live music viewing on youtube and stuff.

Ryan is really young and I think he made a silly choice. He added a lot to PtM as he could sing and I liked his voice paired with John's. But since he is young and was practically a baby when he joined PtM (he's not the OG keyboardist), I understand his need to explore his songwriting. I am not really a fan of his sound, but that's just me:

Did not expect to hear news so soon after the banter a couple weeks back about what theyve been up to & their next album! :cheesy:
Evil Friends
Portugal. The Man - Evil Friends [Official Music Video] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zpBbrXLxP4#ws)
What I love about them is every single album is different and I still love it all. This will be album of the year for me no doubt. Hopefully an east coast tour!
Also their new drummer is the kid from the show "Monk"

Tour presale has started password is EVILFRIENDS
I'm not sure what the deal is with the 9:30 Club on 6/8. I've tried to contact the band and 9:30 Club on twitter but there is another act booked there that night and that's the only show you can't purchase tickets for.

I've listened to Satanic Satanist once or twice along with a few other songs and thought they were a pretty good, straightforward pop/rock band...
But I just saw them at Irving Plaza. DAMN. They were so good. I had no idea they had such a committed following too, though I can see why.
Evil Friends has leaked on exystence.net
Awesome. I've been checking often. Surprised how close to release date it is honestly
It's so freaking good. Not often does a band exceed expectations, especially how high they were for this one. Just awesome.
I'm about to listen for the first time
yup. awesome
these guys are definitely in my top rated current bands
here's a stream from their tumblr

Yeah they did it again, different lineup and all. I still like the last one more I think, but this is good stuff.
This one definitely doesn't hit me like mountain did, but it's good. The one about modern Jesus and the antiwar song are amazing
I'm loving Creep in a T-shirt.
Their body of work puts them in my top 5 favorite bands of the 21st century, maybe top 3.

Yeah it's a great song. I'm loving the record in general. Every time I listen I fall in love with a different song.
Cool version of "Sea of Air"
Portugal. The Man - Sea of Air (Acoustic) // The White Noise Session (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keVFj_cZgIY#ws)
Digging the new album, but unsure quite how much. I didnt listen to PtM before ITMITCloud and that album hit me like a ton of bricks. My favorite album of 2011 in all likelihood. Not sure if I was expecting them to improve on that or what, but backtracking to Satanic Satanist and American Ghetto, ITMITC still blows the others away to me.
With the new one, I think the biggest thing to me so far is the opening. Plastic Soldiers doesnt feel like an opener, and between that, Creep, and Evil Friends the start just feels muddied. For me, the album really takes off with Modern Jesus and flows great from there.
I definitely agree that it doesn't feel like an opener, but Plastic Soldiers works great for me. I love how it just dives in and the first half of the album is full speed ahead. The brakes are pumped at Sea of Air. I like the first half slightly more than the second. Well crafted album imo, unconventional as it is. Not a surprise I guess with Dangermouse involved.

In honor of the 4 year anniversary of one of my favorites, I'll be spinning The Satanic Satanist today.
Thanks to this Forum and you all on this thread in particular in this case....BIG Thank You. I checked out Portugal. The Man a few months ago and got to know their last two albums pretty well. That led me to seeing them live for the first time last night. I am so glad I went (only knowing two songs, my wife was very glad she went too). Awesome show! Most of the songs came from their last two albums and they happened to play pretty much all of my favorites..... Modern Jesus, Creep with a T Shirt, Hip Hop Kids, Got It All.
The intro music was the Everly Brothers. They opened and closed with Purple Yellow Red and Blue. I don't think I've ever been to a concert when the same song was played twice. It still was a great, rocking ending to the night. They weaved in Beatles covers throughout. I assume that is common. Snippets of Don't Let Me Down, Live and Let Die (Paul solo), good part of Hey Jude, and all of Helter Skelter. Great musicians, great energy, and great singer = phenomenal band.
I just wish I arrived at the venue a little earlier to have seen the opening act. I only caught the last song from Crystal Fighters, but it sounded great. They have a ton of energy and were having a blast. Anyone know them at all? If you see Portugal. The Man on this tour, I recommend checking them out.
Yeah they love some Beatles covers. They uses to always close with Sleep Forever into a hey Jude jam. It was awesome. I've also seen them do belter skelter. Great live band
Belter Skelter is killer!
I loved hearing them play Dont Look Back In Anger a couple years ago at Lolla as their encore.
Found this acoustic version of Etta James' 'I'd Rather Go Blind'

Seeing them in a few weeks at The Brown. I'm not too familiar with them but looking forward to the show.
