One Big Holiday has had the duty for the entirety of the last tour, perhaps it's time to give another one a try? Not to take anything away from it as closer, but there's something awesome about hearing it come out of nowhere during the main set.
My candidates:
Gideon (works great with the new extended ending)
Steam Engine (always a good choice)
Mahgeetah (remember when this was always the closer? brought down the house as well)
Phone Went West (a highlight at every show)
What would you like to see?
Phone Went West but extend that fucker!
Always love it when PJ close with a mellow number like Indifference. So in keeping with that maybe One In The Same?
They closed the show at the 40 Watt in '05 with It's About Twilight Now and it rocked. It was the perfect ending for a rocking show and the perfect song for them to leave it all on stage. Actually, it was one of the greatest shows I have ever seen.
It's About Twilight Now, final answer.

Somewhere a year or two there was a thread about this. While openers are all over the map, the closing encore song seems to remain the same for long stretches.
2003: Phone Went West
2004: Run Thru
2005: Mahgeetah
2006: Anytime
2007: Anytime
2008: One Big Holiday
2009: One Big Holiday
2010: One Big Holiday
2011: One Big Holiday
So yes, maybe time for a change? Steam Engine or Lay Low would be my vote
Maybe there's something from the new album they've got in mind, which is why they haven't switched yet. The band doesn't seem afraid to use new songs (run thru, anytime)
The Dark -- completely agree and echo that OBH is amazing but need some variety.
Would love to see (considering only MMJ tracks...covers excluded)
Gideon
Anytime
Lowdown (upbeat version)
Off The Record (with extended & upbeat close)
Also - thanks for starting this thread - was thinking about this one a lot lately
Are talking about set closer or show closer? Wasn't there a time when They Ran was the set closer, possibly 2006-2007? If not the last song, it was close to the end. I thought it wouldn't work but it has a loungey, bring down the house vibe which could be a good lead in to a rockin encore.
My personal preference is for the band to leave the stage after a rockin the house down but also enjoyed a Steam Engine walkoff a la Okonokos.

Check out Mahgeeta from that 40 Watt show. From about 3:20 till the end was probably the most "
everyone in the club and everyone on stage experiencing the same sheer bliss" moment I have ever had at any show ever. The whole joint was a heaving, hot, sweaty, jukin', jivin', screaming, grinding, heaving oneness.
Magic! :)
Last year they closed the Sasquatch set with Steam Engine...it was magical.
I would kill for them to close with A Quick One but I know that'll never happen. I'll settle for Fetcher's Lament.
White Rabbit.
I was really digging OBH as the opener last spring, since they were closing with PHJB doing covers (Carnival Time, Move On Up). PWW is a great way to go, Run Thru or Lay Low, Mahgeetah or Dancefloors would work. Something epic and rockin'. We shall see.

Me too john. 8)
It reminded me of the couple of times back in the day I saw Bruce open with Born To Run!
It was like BAM, right out of the shoot, in your face. Like they were saying "You better be ready to rock your ass off, cause we sure are".
LIL BILLY
Run Thru. My head normally explodes during it, so the rest of the show is pretty much shot for me anyways.
All Night Long.
Dance your way out.
BLACK METAL!!!!
I can tell from the 15 second clip that it's going to be an epic closer.
War Begun
O is the one that is real.

Totally agree Fredo  I can't recall a more electric moment in the pit during the T5 run than when when they busted out O. The only thing comparable that I can recall was the final OBH but that shouldn't count.
Do you know how cool it is to watch BH jump up and down? ;D

Sounds good to me. IATN was one of the T5 highlights for me.

I think he needed a helmet or someone to spot him...or maybe both

i was thinking the same. Would need to be really really epic though
I really enjoyed obh as an opener last year. it was kinda saying "we're here and we're about to blow the roof off this mutha". I think it would work really well opening the encore best.
As far as closing the night how about I think I'm going to hell? I have never witnessed live but every time I listen to it in the ride the volume progressively goes up.

Right?! I knew I was waiting for it but I didn't anticipate the synergetic synchronicity to be so in sync. One of 3.5 memories from that week. :)
.Black Metal>Easy Morning Rebel>War Begun>Dancefloorz.
All as one continuous song. No water breaks.
If they don't go with new material, O is the One that is Real or Phone Went West would be great. But I'd prefer The Dark strait into It's About Twilight Now just as they were used as a frequent closer in the early early days for a good reason (Jim 'bout screamed his lungs out on those two songs), then end the encore with a Lil Billy thrash meltdown.
My Morning Jacket - It's About Twilight Now (7/8/2000) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXTw4S9GKns#)
My Morning Jacket 1999 "The Dark" and "It's About Twilight Now" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9sqJC6SCuk#)
Arghhh. Can someone tell me how to properly embed the YT video on this forum???
fixed it for ya
you only need to post the youtube url link,
it embeds automagically
Thank you Riny!
Something else about the topic, back when Phone was a regular closer, TTT once told me that he was getting a little tired of closing with Phone Went West but he never got tired of playing One Big Holiday. If the rest of the band feels the same, One Big will be blasted from the stage as long as these guys are rocking it.
I would vote for Cobra, a song that is rarely played, other than hometown shows, to close. As it is a full roller coaster ride.
Dondante - for sure. It would leave the whole crowd spooked and slightly crazed.
One more to add: How Could I Know. It sounds so good at the end of Z, and hearing vocals that golden... it's the song I most want them to bring back right now, and it would be a satisfying closer that fits the smoother Circuital feel.
Run Thru or Remnants. I wanna go out feelin torn to bits!
I like the thought of ending a show with a Victory Dance for all
