This is a little weird. I personally don't know what falls in to plagiarism but those sound very very similar. Although I can't believe they would uses something without permission.

no one has said they didn't get permission...i'm pretty sure they did considering he listed them in spin magazine as an influence...if you are gonna copy something illegally i assume you will try and cover your tracks a little bit
You could sample and pay homage right? Esp if you acknowledge it.

Love it!!! How many bands can claim to have covered soul thai pop?? I agree it's entirely similar, but black metal sounds soo much schmooover. I didn't expect that, can't wait to groove it out live.
And the guitar solo sounds like some straight 60s psych-fuzz....nothin' wrong with expressing your roots :D :D geeze what a freak-flag song this is.
I think what people are forgetting is that artists sample other artists' work all the time. I think the reason people are so confused by this is the fact that it is mostly hip hop artists. How many hip hop songs by the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, etc. have sampled other artists' hooks/beats/chords? A lot. I'd also like to bring up the fact that another Jim James track, recorded by Monsters of Folk, titled Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.) sampled Trevor Dandy's "Is There Any Love." He's basically just paying homage to a song/artist that he really admires while recording his own, original track.
so you have to have a facebook account to listen to this.....booooooooh!!

This really fits the whole "Circuital" theme too. Musically we go all over the place and end up back at places we were before. Musical history is a living, breathing, changing, evolving thing, but on some elemental level, stuff that worked decades ago (even on the other side of the world!) can still power the circuits that are running now. This double works when you consider that the song seems to be about holding onto Black Metal (and everything that comes with that concept) in favor of just completely turning off a circuit and moving on to something totally different (teen pop is mentioned in the song.)
If you like Led Zeppelin, then don't complain.

Love the song! This album is going to be sick..
I don't think they technically "sampled" that Thai song. It's not like they just took the music from it and had Jim sing over top of it. The band is definitely playing the music.

Well it definitely sounds a lot like that Siamese Soul song, which I had never heard before.
The first couple times I listened to Black Metal, I was reminded of this song -
Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELpmmeT69cE#)
I WAS TOLD THERE WOULD BE A FLUTE SOLO IN THIS SONG. FALSE ADVERTISING.
I can't wait t hear how many people hate this song (and why) ;D
QuoteI find this very muppets-esque . maybe muppets take mahattan.
First thing I thought of as well. There was an article in Rolling Stone about MMJ making music for the Muppets movie, but the songs they talked about were Wonderful and another one.
Either way, I'm diggin this tune, and it's going to be hard for me to get "Oh-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-yeah-yeah-yeah-yay-ohhhhh" out of my head.
It is straight up the same riff including the horns. Regardless this song owns. I just hope they give credit where credit is due.

Portion of Vanilla Ice's Segment in I Love the 90's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JippcFJsSFw#)
"Black Metal," for instance, is augmented by massed female voices and what sounds like wah-wah-ed horns — a combo that lands the song somewhere between "Superfly" and "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)."
Between this from rolling stone and the article from SPIN, which features the album art of the Thai artist, I don't think the band is hiding the fact that it was sampled at all. Who cares.
I just want to hear the gdamn song already!!
Don't jump down my throat for this, but I'm not liking it. It doesn't sound like MMJ to me. It suuuuper produced. From that discription of it being like superfly etc. I was excited, but now I am disapointed.
For those wondering about the Siamese Soul connection. Yes, there's a connection and the band credits the original song in the liner notes. They look at it almost like they sampled the riff, but they are actually playing it all.
that's what i thought...thanks for clearing it all up...
Yea I am feelin it' :D

The post above yours wasn't looking for a handout. It was stated that people who have preordered the album should be able to download it. That sounds fair to me. It's not a question of supporting the band. It's a question of how many times you have to support the band.
That said, nothing's going to stop me from buying the track on iTunes tonight.

But we're not talking about a leak. We're talking about legitimate downloads on Amazon and iTunes. Why should someone pay 99 cents or a buck 29 for it if they've already pre-ordered the album? Doesn't that seem redundant?

Folks relax! Whether this is sampled or a cover, or a cover of a riff, it doesn't matter. The aforementioned Zeppelin analogy is accurate. Any one here ever hear of the Grateful Dead? Like the song Morning Dew? Research it. Going Down the Road Feeling Bad? Samething.....they are traditional songs, made their own by the Dead.
Not one person has read a writing credit or liner note on this song....yet some crazy shit is being posted.
If I pre ordered the album, I get it on may 31. If I'm impatient, I can pick my belly button to see if I've got $1 stashed in there or not and then scratch the itch
i don't know what that means... but yeah 1$ ain't a fortune and if they wanted to give it to you they would've.
Man, parts of this thread are like someone peeing on my slice of cake. I've been jazzed about the tune all day.
I got drunk the other night and thought the whole album was coming out on May 1st...then it occured to me it was the 31st - I peed on my own cake then.
For bands that I really like, I don't mind paying a little bit extra to hear stuff early or get some extra stuff. So yeah, it's like buying the song twice, but I am definitely gonna go on my computer later on after midnight and buy this track from Amazon or iTunes or whoever has it because I am impatient and I want to hear it now. A little bit of the money eventually goes to the boys in MMJ, so it's all good.

Huh? They are both on the album.
Its no big deal to sample things in hip hop and rap, but the second a band like this does it its WATCH OUT! Plagiarism! :o So many songs are completely unoriginal....at least MMJ managed to make a memorable song out of doing it.
I'm starting to get tired of people saying anything about them sampling this. We get it, they sound the same, embrace it.
i can't believe there's so much controversy going down on what is a really badass song.. the band is obviously paying hommage to an influence.. they aren't using a pre-recorded sample.. they're simply covering it somewhat and adding their own vibe to it..
i don't get it... people can rock out at an MMJ show full of fun covers and such and never bitch about how MMJ is unjustly claiming rights to it.. hell some people have even gone so far as to postulate that the reason for a T5 box set not happening is because of the royalties that the band would have to pay to bands that own the rights to songs they covered during the run.
Riny clearly stated that the band acknowledges the band who originally wrote the riff
again.. this song is honest to god rock and roll and i can't believe that there are some people whining and finding things negative to say about it.
go out and get yourself laid... get outside and enjoy some nice weather.. do something to cheer you up and get your mind right before may 31st..
otherwise.. kinda STFU and keep the negativity away from my favorite forum on the internet for 7 years running..
P.S. no i'm not being one of those that think that MMJ can do no wrong..
P.P.S. i think the band makes enough and would make enough from a T5 release to pay and acknowledge the artists' they covered during that week..

The song is crazy. And I love it. So awesome. It completely got stuck in my head from just listening to the sample. I was like just kinda humming the noise of it cuz I had/have no idea what the lyrics are. I cannot wait to buy it later on tonight so I can listen to it properly.

Well, my point is simply that we haven't read any liner notes indicating it is indeed a cover. Only for the sake of argument, lets assume its a Jim James credited composition once its released? I too not trying to be a dick, and I get your logic. This is all kinda like Highly Suspicious last time. Except the credits.

It's the second thing down after all the dates are listed. The first thing is a youtube video and the second square thing is the song if you click it.
Awesome Brother Beck! Listening now!
Anyone attempted at deciphering all the lyrics yet?
Oh and this song is RIDICULOUSLY good i think ive listened to it like eight times already.

So is the consensus that this song will indeed be available for purchase tonight at midnight? Or is it one of those wait until tomorrow morning type deals?

Whatever one thinks of this song, these guys got balls. Very little identifies it as MMJ. I think Jim made up his mind with Z that he would not be predictable, and do what HE wants, and after it filters into the fans brains it clearly becomes an MMJ song. Not sure how much I like it yet, by I sure respect the left field curve ball stuff. Makes Circuital sound like an old classic.
Ugh. As a Thai Pop purist, it disgusts me that some gun-toting, "we're the best country in the world" Americans come over and make it cool to like my beloved Thai pop. Now its too mainstream and I need to go find another genre to be superior about. I'd tell you what it is, but all you poseurs on this message board would just go and make it uncool by listening to it.

it's like srsly? I still can't believe they used guitars on this track.
that scream towards the end is going to be so juicy live. it's going to rip faces clean off like butter. right at the "I want to blow" then it's like "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA yea yea yea yayo!!!"(oh whatever). best part.
I'm trying to avoid listening to it via stream -- I just want to download it and pop it on my iPod so I can listen to it in an environment of my choosing. However, something tells me I'm going to have to wait until the early hours of the morn before it becomes available to purchase. It's already available on amazon.co.uk but us North American folk can't download from there.
its on itunes under the circuital preorder... which is only 7.99.. but black metal is only .99 and full track list is there

YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song could totally be a Bond theme.
I think in time people will realize its a classic. Its fuckin weird and makes you think "wtf!? this is mmj!?" but at the same time you love it and can't explain why. Then again I'm one of the people who loved Highly Suspicious from the get-go...so...yeah.
Also, on another forum i saw where some guy said that this song will "evoke a Smells Like Teen Spirit type response" from the public ;D. For one, things like that don't happen in music anymore. The market has changed and culture has shifted significantly, not to mention we're all a bunch of jaded fucks. Secondly, even if songs DID have that kind of impact these days, I don't think this would even come close to being the one to do it. Its a great, far out track but i don't even think it will do modestly well on radio to be honest. :-\ I mean, I'm Amazed is their only charting single in America right? Adult Contemporary if I'm not mistaken....and if a song like that can't crack the airwaves this surely won't.
After two more listens this morning, I'm completely sold on it.

I think that it sounds a lot like the Hawaii Five O theme song.

Big disappointment if this is a track on the album compared to circuital which i really love. Hopefully the mix is better as well, i can barely understand what they are saying as the sound is just off. Im as big as a fan as they get as i was at all 5 nights in nyc but just not feeling this one.
I have to agree..this song does nothing for me...I kept waiting for it to change but it really doesn't do much.

So does anybody want to take a crack at the lyrics? It seems like Lucifer is in it quite a bit.
Catching waves on Lucifer's beach
Taking shade underneath Lucifer's trees
Getting sustenance from Lucifer's beach/peach?
Oh black metal it's a ?? speech?
That's what I'm hearing too! And I might not be the best one to take a guess... ;) But here's the rest of what I hear:
It's a darkness you can't deny
But it don't belong in the ground at night
Suppose you'll find this place it will suffice
Coming into life you needn't cry
But as a boy you gotta let it go
Or ?
? something is good
Oh black metal you're so misunderstood
Holdin' on to black metal
Black metal
Holdin' on to black metal
Black metal
Black metal you've been holding on too
Oh black metal, so misunderstood
Don't ? Lucifer's fool
Black metal feels ?, enough is enough
? out of Lucifer's cup
Black metal lead to ? and your teenage pop
We're just all ? and all grown up
Still holdin' on to black metal
Black metal

Black metal
Black metal you've been holding on too ?

the only thing I have to add is that I think its "getting sustenance from Lucifers Peach" that just is how I heard it though
Thanks Sara and Ryder; it's definitely a start. I think two of the lines in the song might be:
Black metal feeds those young, enough if enough
[Something] wants refill out of Lucifer's cup.
Also, I think the preceding line might end with Lucifer's food, but who knows.
This song is definitely enigmatic in terms of deciphering the lyrics.
Damn, for some reason this doesn't appear to be available for purchase in Canada.
Love the song, love the influence, nothing to complain about from me! I just wish exams were over so I could put proper effort into these discussions. 2 more days...

Ok, so opinions on this song are varied. But is there anyone here that doesn't think this song is going to slay live? I'm just curious.
I think the song is great. It's catchy and just out of left field, which is why I love this band - they're willing to take chances and they continue to push the boundaries.
This song is going to be HUGE in Japan!!!!
Already easily in my top 10 MMJ songs of all time.

Ok, so opinions on this song are varied. But is there anyone here that doesn't think this song is going to slay live? I'm just curious.
of course it's going to slay live
I can't get the song out of my head since first hearing it--and in a good way, not the way that pisses you off. Excellent, catchy, funky-ass song.
I see the varied opinions, but unlike Highly Suspicious, I don't see any outright hatred of the song going around. I predict that this will end up as one of everyone's favorite MMJ songs by this time next year.
Can't get enough of that riff!
it'd be spine-tingling if we could sing the female vocal parts back at them when we hear this live....
that might be unmanageable though given our respective vocal ranges ;D

Start practicing folks. It's going to happen.
I think it would be awesome to hear them do this with the Louisville Kids Choir or whomever they have played with that are a bunch of kids who sing good songs

Regional practice sessions/tryouts to be held at all major interstate exits that have Wal-Marts. Dates TBA soon.

I thought about that too....it'd be mighty sweet. The creepy factor of this song would skyrocket with little folks singing live.
well the waterfront AND the yum center had little folk so it's possible. i can't wait to see what kinds of tricks they have up their sleeve for this louisivlle show.
Like most here I heard this song on Monday. It was clearly nothing I expected. I listened about 3 times. I never like to OD on new music, it distorts my perceptions too much. I read the mostly rave review, folks here who had listened to it 20 or more times, and raved about it. I went about 36 hours without listening to it, so it stirred around my subconscious. I just finished listened to the whole thing again. ..................I think the rave reviews are on target. I have went through a similar process with Circuital.
Uhhhhg this is killing me. I want to listen so bad.
MUST
HEAR

ALBUM

ONCE!

Smells Like Teen Spirit :)
It took a couple of listens but this tune has definitely grown on me. Gotta say thanks for singles/teasers but I have to hear the entire album! I'm really psyched to hear how these songs connect...
I honestly think i may be addicted to this song. i have not listened to any other music since this came out and pretty sure I've listened to it about 30 times, i just cant get it outta my head.... :o
Burned it to CD last night, listened all day at work. Then on the way home saw a friend driving next to me. Ejected the disc and slung it in his passenger window while we were moving down the road. ;D. I love sharing my love for mmj. He has since preordered the vinyl.

Don't jump down my throat for this, but I'm not liking it. It doesn't sound like MMJ to me. It suuuuper produced. From that discription of it being like superfly etc. I was excited, but now I am disapointed.
Agreed - Like Circuital don't care for Black Metal still love MMJ. Hated Highly Suspicious first time I heard but love it live. I'm hoping the rest of the album is more like Circuital. I'm hoping they released this early to create some buzz and gage reaction. If the rest of the album is like Black Metal I will be really disappointed. MMJ does not need to recreate themselves. Just keep turning out the classic tunes we all love.

we did slow to about 35mph, I was in my work truck and he was in his S4. Glad I didn't have to explain it to the police. Although they probably would have just confiscated the disc and let me go, haha
Just gave Black Metal a listen through excellent headphones and was blown away. What a brave, original tune. Yeah, I said it! ORIGINAL! Who else would do this? Its an excellent tune coming from any band because its balsy and shows a love of music, pure and simple. Love the vocal work, wonder who the kids were, and the Wings-like intermission (Jet anyone?). I will be real interesting to see how they pull this off live, but they do a fine job with Wordless Chorus, so I'm sure they'll impress us on stage. What a great listen.
From the official Record Store Day facebook page:
Record Store Day
Coming May 17: participating stores will have a CD single from My Morning Jacket with just a little bit more: the new single, "Holdin On To Black Metal" but also exclusive track "Butch Cassidy" recorded live at Terminal 5, and a $2 coupon for Circuital when it comes out.
Is anyone else seriously hoping we get a video in time? There's no way it wouldn't blow our minds.
i heard this twice on the radio today and it has been in my head since. :)
LOVE this freaky freak freakin song! It makes me want to dance in my backyard in the middle of the night. It's already accomplished that once. Not that my neighbors haven't seen me dance in my front yard in the middle of the day.
This song will completely destroy it live!

cool article john, thanks. this is gonna be really special live.
I'm not loving this tune. Maybe it'll grow on me, but I've never been a fan of MMJ's soul influenced diversions.
I'm watching a documentary right now about Black Metal in scandanavia where people would slit their throats on stage and an album cover was a friedn who blew his head up with a revolver. just thought i'd share
Don't forget the cd single comes out today. It's $2 and has a coupon for $2 off the album so it's basically free. I know EarX has them, I'm checking my local record stores later today....

Anyone know if you can order it online? I'm not having much luck finding it online so far.

It's free if you plan to buy the album at an indie record store. Once again, those of us who preordered the album from the band miss out.

"Oh Black Metal you're so misunderstood," Jim James sings on this ode to Lucifer's favorite racket. Putting any actual metal in a song about metal would be way too obvious for these genre-bending Southern boys. So on "Black Metal" — the latest offering from Circuital, due May 31 — they roll out rubbery psychedelic soul complete with steel-wool guitar fuzz, pink-chiffon backup singers and a whacked-out wah-wah horn section — kicking ass with a velvet boot. They recorded the track in a church gym, so they may have some 'splaining to do when they meet their Maker. But at least they're riding to the Lake of Fire in style.

I know Earxtacy in Louisville will ship them. They had a shit ton of them at my independent record store. I'd call around to anyone that participated in Record Store Day and I bet you'll find one without having to pay the shipping. If you still struggle, let me know and I'll pick up one for you and mail it to you. It's worth the $2 for the cover art alone!

"Will My Morning Jacket be covering any Venom tunes on tour soon?
"Welcome to Hell"? Just kidding. But maybe some day Jeff Ament and I could do a dueling bass version?"
Now THIS would be sick.
