AMERICAN DAD (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) – "My Morning Straightjacket"
After attending a concert with Hayley (Rachael MacFarlane), Stan becomes obsessed with her music in an all-new episode that features guest voices by Zach Galifianakis and members of My Morning Jacket, including Carl Broemel, Two-Tone Tommy, Bo Koster, Patrick Hallahan and Jim James.
Wow, that sounds awesome. I'm not an American Dad fan, but an entire episode about MMJ sounds like the kind of thing that could change my mind. It's so cool that they're all actually doing voices too. Can't wait for this.
The date of the episode is November 22nd.
Wasn't there an episode awhile back where the daughter was walking out the door and said something about going on tour with MMJ? I dont watch that show very often, but I was watching that night and I almost fell off the couch. :)
This will be fun.
I've never seen American Dad, but Zach Galifianakis + the Jacket = loads of win.
Note to self: MMJ just reached a whole 'nother level of badass when they get their own episode of a TV show on a major network
Nov 22nd's episode will be kept on my DVR for eternity
QuoteI've never seen American Dad, but Zach Galifianakis + the Jacket = loads of win.
One of the lucky ones, eh? [smiley=thumbup.gif]
Looking forward to this episode! :o
MMJ animated!! How cool is that!!!
This is the best news I've heard in awhile. Just because it's going to air when I go home for Thanksgiving break, and I can watch it with all my friends back home. I haven't met any huge MMJ fans since I've gone to college.
MMJ brings people together.
Not even My Morning Jacket and Zach Galifianakis, two of my favorite things on the planet, are enough to get me to end my boycott on any and all things associated with Seth MacFarlane.
(Who am I kidding?? I have no choice but to watch this, but I refuse to enjoy it one bit. I'm quite angry at MMJ and Zach for even putting me in this rather compromising position. I still get sick to my stomach and punch things when I think about the fact that Fox actually gave MacFarlane a 3rd slot on Sunday primetime for yet another terrible cartoon at the expense of the most consistently funny show of all time, King of the Hill. What to do with all this misplaced anger of mine?)
Wow that's awesome!
sweet! i knew that it wasn't too good to be true after my post in the music section!
that is awesome. ha will someone remind me

I can't wait for this. Seth McFarlane has redeemed himself.
Bwahahaha.
AHHH, that is great. I can't wait to find out what song is playing that's making him tear up! And why Jim isn't wearing any pants!

Maybe Seth's a fan. That'd be my guess.
Obviously someone in their camp is.
That is GREAT!! I cannot wait to see it!!
At first I was kinda worried that this would be one of those things where some kid over hears you talking about mmj and he says something like oh yeah that band from American dad I love them! that one song they have is awesome! But then I remembered nobody watches American dad ;D

I swear someone on the board is behind this. I can't wait!!!
I love the animated band.
"In upcoming episode "My Morning Straitjacket," lead character Stan Smith will become an obsessed groupie of My Morning Jacket."
I can't help but think they're poking a bit of fun at we obsessed groupies ;D
The boys look really good as cartoons. That's gonna be so cool.
I can finally sit and watch MMJ with the family.

I remember a post from last season that the daughter left to follow them on tour. Isn't that correct? Maybe they will become one of those drop in regulars after this. Fox will have good ratings from all of us that night!

"Somehow not surprisingly, this peculiar creative marriage is the result of the life-changing 4-hour show the Jackets played in the pouring rain at Bonnaroo '08: American Dad co-creator Mike Barker was at that show (along with yours truly), and if he manages to somehow capture the manic energy of Galifianakis prancing around the stage in a Lil' Orphan Annie dress while MMJ covers Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home," he may have just penned the best episode of any television show, live or animated, in the history of the medium."
read the rest here, TTT breaks it down a little (some mutual love and respect) :)

The most important part of that interview:
Blankenship says they'll be getting together for a week or two in January, and then maybe again in March to plot the followup to 2008's stupendous Evil Urges. "I think we're just going to spend most of next year writing and recording," he says.
8-). Hope there's a tour though. He doesn't mention anything about that.
Am I the only one who didn't know Two-Tone's real last name?

That's nice to hear! I'm predicting that they will play some festival stuff but no big full blown tour until late '10. There is no way they are going to go two full summers with no festival shows.

Someone did post on here that they wrote to them and asked if they were playing Bonnaroo (Think it was Bonnaroo) last year, and they said there will be a tour in '10. Don't remember who it was though.
I can't be the only one who remembers that. Tom doesn't make it sound promising though... :-/
QuoteI can't be the only one who remembers that. Tom doesn't make it sound promising though... :-/
I remember that. I also remember suggesting that it didn't seem accurate to me at the time. Nothing wrong with wishful thinking, I want a tour just as much as anyone, but I just don't think it's in the cards for next year. I could be wrong, but I'll trust Tom over a private message from management to a fan posted on the forum. Just sayin'.

I hear ya, I'd trust Tom more too. Even more wishful thinking though, Tom did say they'll be spending MOST of next year writing and recording. ;D
Who knows, but I can't see them going another whole year without any shows, even if it's just the festivals.

"To mark the occasion, MMJ will release a six-track digital EP through iTunes that also features dialogue clips taken from the show."
YESSSSSSSSSS. This just keeps getting better and better!
Also, this.

I'd settle for a festival show. Any Jacket show would be ok w/ me.
BTW: I already set my DVR to record the episode.
Everyday is wishful thinking for me. MMJ MUST play in 2010. And if they play Bonnaroo that will be even better.
But just think about it, folks, whenever they DO come back, it will be mother flipping sweet. Their energy will be high, they'll be feeding off the crowd's anticipation, they will be playing together for the first time in a long time and I can't wait.
After seeing MoF on Monday and then Patrick did this at Wednesday's Dan Auerbach show, I am craving some Jacket. Hard core.
i can imagine at the end of the episode saying "catch my morning jacket on tour 2010" I would flip an absolute shit.

also on itunes you can hear previews from the show. so... check it out
where on i-tunes?
i have searched high and low, no success.
wait...i found it.
it seemed to help when i typed in "american dad" instead of "family guy."

Just a heads up re the iTunes "My Morning Straightjacket" EP...it's album versions of the songs + some dialogue clips.
If Kiss is the semi-official Family Guy band, does that mean My Morning Jacket is the semi-official American Dad band? Hell, let's just make them the official band.

Possibly the funniest thing ever.
Phone Went West doorbell!!
P.S. Were they making fun of the fans or embracing MMJ as the greatest band ever?
That was awesome! I especially liked the oknokos bit at the end :o
AWESOME!! AWESOME!! LOVED IT!! Especially the I Will Sing You Songs reference and the monkey named "Mahgeetah". Definitely a lot of references for the fans. Would we pay $90 to hear Jim gargle???
QuoteAWESOME!! AWESOME!! LOVED IT!! Especially the Steam Engine reference and the monkey named "Mahgeetah". Definitely a lot of references for the fans. Would we pay $90 to hear Jim gargle???
Yeah i was surprised at all the references they threw in that only elite fans would get like the i will sing you songs lyrics and the monkey named mahgeetah ;D
Loved the tour bus stuff and Almost Famous refrences. The makers of this show have to be massive fans to include an actual live clip of them at the end.
Does anyone else notice that Jim is playing his flying V guitar while singing Wordless Chorus during Stan's enlightenment? He never has his guitar when he sings this song!
I was actually wondering if they would close the show with a real clip of live MMJ. Called it, though I wasn't thinking Okonokos.
Will the uninitiated appreciate this show or find it kinda odd, I wonder?
My wife loved the fact that she, too, is married to a 42 year old guy who's obsessed with MMJ. I've gotta get her that outfit Stan's wife was wearing.
the phone went west doorbell is genius.lol
That was amazing! Cannot believe how central they were to the episode - was thinking it would be more like 5 minutes of MMJ but they were it, especially Jimmy Jam. That doorbell, the monkey, and the Touch Me Trip were incredible. Wow. And they did a good job with the soundtrack, making it fit. I especially thought Remnants made for a killer sexy walkin' tune.
LEGENDARY! now that we saw a fake MMJ conert in cartoon form, lets see MMJ tour. My friends at college all saw it and were like dude thats you. loved the whole trip during touch me im going to scream pt. 2...and the money gold and diamond rings. American dad killed....great promo for MMJ....hopefully this gets the general public to remember that MMJ is not touring, and get start demanding more jacket....can't wait to see them in the spring. :)
That was totally sweetpickles!!! They perfectly captured what it's like to live under the spell of JJ. My roommates and I were cracking up because it so accurately reflected my life, right up to and including the meeting Jim part (well, except it didn't happen in a dressing room, it was on the street, and I don't actually believe Jim is writing songs for me).
Permanent spot on the DVR for sure!
yea i'm getting a lot of comments saying "i didn't know they were real but they're awesome that they are" or " i saw em on american dand and they're great"
*evil laughter for awesomeness to come *
Quotethe phone went west doorbell is genius.lol
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i got alot of texts of people saying "thats you"
Same here. I got texts from my friends saying "you would totally pay for that recording of jim in the bathroom".
I am Stan. ;D
Unbelievably cool show! Amazing references throughout (as mentioned above in this thread) and I'm glad to know that others are as insanely obsessed as I am. I'm pretty sure that the moment I heard Jim when I first saw them live I said to myself "that's the voice of an angel"
That was fucking awesome. I felt like my brain collided with earth and an animated meteor. BRILLIANT!!
My favorite part was def the PWW doorbell...as soon as that transpired, I wanted that shit more than Bellawood flooring.
I was floored by the Wordless Chorus clip at the end, they really gave props to MMJ [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
QuoteLoved the tour bus stuff and Almost Famous refrences. The makers of this show have to be massive fans to include an actual live clip of them at the end.
Almost Famous is one of my favorite movies and I loved the references. Roger was "Abbey Road" instead of "Penny Lane". Hysterical!
Also loved the prominent placement of the poster from last year's Berkeley show in the "MMJ Den."
It's often hard for me to put what MMJ means to me in words, but that whole sequence with Stan and Jim flying off the earth and into the sun sums it up pretty well.
I usually turn the TV off after Family Guy, but this episode was really well done.
Missed it cause I had to work. Hulu takes about a week to put up new episodes so if anyone can find that episode elsewhere please let me know.
EDIT:
It's here if anyone else missed it:

First time watching that show and laughed my ass off. Loved all the song lyric references, the Jim James den, the $90 boot, "I put my pants on one leg at a time...". ;D
One of my co-workers here usually pops in to let me know when he arrives, but not today. Today he popped in to ask if I watched the show. He's setting up an Ebay alert for gargling now. ;)
Great episode!
Now, about that doorbell...
;D

This is going to be an odd request, but can someone get me an MP3 of the $90 bootleg?
Not even kidding.
That Phone Went West doorbell... oh man.... hadn't laughed that hard in a while.
the dream sequence was pretty funny. awesome they incorporated the little details like the door bell, owls, bears, etc. hilarious when they're trying to fix the pinball machine and when jim back flipped into his pants. haha
surprised at how dedicated the episode was to the band itself. hopefully it boosts the awareness a bit about them, they're too good to go unnoticed.
loved the raunchy Remnants scene...
AWESOME!! Loved it... the PWW doorbell was genius and I especially liked the trip during Touch Me Pt II. Brilliant!!
I loved it, and the inside jokes with lyrics were sweet!

I loved all the little inside jokes, but I don't think I'll be watching American Dad again...I thought the humor was kind of lowest common denominator. IMO the whole "getting backstage" sequence was unnecessarily raunchy and demeaning to women. My parents taped it, and I'm kind of thinking about telling them not to watch for fear it will turn them off the Jacket.
It's also the featured program on Hulu right now, or it was the first thing that came up when I went looking for it.
Just wettin' my finger flickin' the bean...

I totally agree. The whole time I was watching it, I thought I cannot believe that this is happening. Who would have thought!!! I cannot wait to see what my sister and brother-in -law think. They recorded it and were gonna watch it tonight. They are sort of newbie fans to MMJ (thanks to my constant plugging)

It's toungue-in-cheek and was a parody of Almost Famous and of groupies in general. It's not demeaning to women, anyone who is smart enough knows that most women don't act like that but some do.
I'm not talking about the Almost Famous parody...obviously I got that, and thought it was sort of cute. I'm talking about the sequence while "Remnants" was playing. Flashing cooch to get backstage? Really? That was tasteless, and not something I want to associate with MMJ, even if it's cartoon cooch :P
That, and fart jokes are an utter waste of Zach Galifianakis.

Totally!!! I am glad you pointed that out, Lady. I was just as excited about Zach as he is mad funny, but he had only a couple lines. Oh, well. I guess you can't have it all.
That was the first episode I ever watched of the show and I'm with you--I won't be watching again.

Hey, what's up man! Good to hear from you. Sorry about your marriage news. Glad your back.

QuoteDoes anyone else notice that Jim is playing his flying V guitar while singing Wordless Chorus during Stan's enlightenment? He never has his guitar when he sings this song!
AND he was center-stage!
QuoteI'm not talking about the Almost Famous parody...obviously I got that, and thought it was sort of cute. I'm talking about the sequence while "Remnants" was playing. Flashing cooch to get backstage? Really? That was tasteless, and not something I want to associate with MMJ, even if it's cartoon cooch :P
That, and fart jokes are an utter waste of Zach Galifianakis.
I thought it was awesome zach was on there. makes me wonder if he'll do more stuff with the band in the future movie or video performance wise. I thought the 900dollars for a bootleg of bullshit was pretty funny. it's just funny the concept, how rare songs to diehard fans are suppose to be amazing but really they sound like a bunch of people are taking a dump.
maybe I'm just stiz to the niznoned. It was almost unbearable watching family guy waiting for this other cartoon to come on that I'd never seen before. that episode was pure MMJ, has that ever been done before? it was almost a shameless promotion of the band to the entire nation and it was done well. they had the trip out sequence everything. it's so funny when they peace out of the driveway and the highly suspicious riff is wailing as they drive off. the bo and carl pinball thing was really hilarious. I wonder if they got to take part in the concept of the episode or if it was purely the writers worshiping the Entity that is My Morning Jacket.

Thanks for the vibes man! Sometimes, bad news is good news. This was the case here. glad to be back. Im headed to Charlotte for good next week, and looking forward to a positive future!!
Perhaps we shall cross paths once again my friend!!
Finally got to see this on Hulu. The Phone Went West doorbell is genius. I wish the whole band had been given more lines but other than that, it was pretty awesome. It was great that they significantly featured Remnants. That song doesn't get nearly enough credit.

Really? You didn't see the humor in it? I'd try harder and don't take yourself so seriously.
I didn't think the cartoon cooch was very funny either.
maybe ya'll should flash more cooch, then you'd be less uptight and more backstage.
honestly- I barely laughed at the whole show- I was smiling because of the MMJ parts but I don't find the humor in American Dad, Family guy, etc to be very funny...
Its awesome that a huge fan of MMJ got to honor the band in his own special way though.

you know, people complain that MMJ hasn't reached the national stardom they deserve, but when they
do get some national attention on a major network then people complain about that too!
Shall we dissect the corporate affiliation and sponsorship of American Dad now? :-/
I think some people just like to complain :P
i forgot about this line:
"the name's abbey road. when it snows, i need to be plowed."
LOL
I don't think anyone is really complaining. There is sometimes stuff that is shocking AND very funny and sometime there is stuff that is shocking just for the sake of shocking. This show definitely rides the fine line in between the two.
I thought the it was kind of funny because as she got closer and closer it got tougher and tougher for her to get past the security. After using her top just to get free popcorn, she had to raise her game. ;D

Yes! Now that's offensive, funny AND clever.
I agree...no one was complaining, merely stating they found a particular scene offensive.
Bully, your comment is terribly inappropriate.

Maybe it'll work for you :)

I agree competely. the flashing of the coochie to get back stage kinda made me cringe..I think mmj is classier than that...however i know it was an exaggeration for the cartoon. If thats what it takes to get backstage..it ain't gonna happen for me.

I think the funniest part was when the guy is backstage and Jim says "Uhh, if anyone can hear my voice, can you please come in here?"
actually scratch that- the funniest part is that tiny little flying giraffes flew in to help put Jim's pants on.

agreed...i loved the episode, but it was terrible up until the Wordless Chrous scene, and all the funny stuff revolved around MMJ and the MMJ-tied humor.
i wonder if it was better than the 59th highest rated show last week?! ;D
...im not even going to get into flashing the money vacuum because itll be a slippery slope for me ::)

Yep...whenever I listen to Evil Urges anymore, I pretty much just skip directly to Remnants after Thank You Too.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback I saw on here regarding the American Dad episode. There was some negativity on the MMJ FaceBook page, and the way I see it (and after reading the article by AD co-creator*) I think it was a true fan's vision of "the power" MMJ can have over you. You know he was a fan (he attended Bonaroo 2008) due to all of the references that only MMJ fans would understand.
I am a fan of American Dad (more so Family Guy) so it was really quite an experience for me. For those of you who were put off by some of the lewdness; it may not have been funny to you, but it sure was funny to many others. Like someone else said, don't take it seriously... it's a cartoon for crying out loud!
Oh and like there isn't a basis in reality for the idea of women exposing themselves or promising sexual favors to get back stage. MMJ may not be the stereotypical band to have wild groupie sex parties after a show (though, I wouldn't know... maybe they are ;) ). But I think the writers were using the Rock n' Roll genre for humor's sake. It is certainly an essential part of the "Sex, Drugs & Rock n' Roll" ideology. In the end, humor like music is a matter of personal preferences. I happen to think American Dad (and Family Guy) are waaay funnier and show more comedic wit then your average sitcoms on TV. For those offended, I'd be curious to hear what TV shows you find funny...
But again, I'm glad to see most people liked the episode. It should spur more interest in the band; I only hope older fans like us will be able to get tickets on the next tour! Side note- It would be great if MMJ had fan club pre-sale ticket opportunities like other bands. The episode could be a major milestone for the band. Time will tell.

P.S.--Do you ever watch "Between Two Ferns?" :P
I do! I was thrilled to see Zach and I thought he had some of the best lines of the episode...like when the mom asked him to stop pressing the PWW doorbell and he was like "...I wish I could." ;D I hope we see him working with the band again in the future.
Quotemaybe ya'll should flash more cooch, then you'd be less uptight and more backstage.
Funny, I've never had to flash anything except a backstage pass. ;) As for "taking it too seriously"...well, I take my MMJ seriously, as do you all. They've always seemed to me to be a band that was fairly progressive in their thinking. So it was jarring to me, as a fan who thinks of MMJ as part of
all that is good and right in this world ;D to see them portrayed alongside that cheesy "ha ha, ladies have to flash the musty ol' claptrap to get what they want" plotline.
It's not that I didn't appreciate the episode; I thought it was very cool to see all of our MMJ inside jokes on the small screen.
Rub, I enjoy Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, Eastbound and Down, Life and Times of Tim...I'm not some PC wackjob. I just didn't think that particular sequence was amusing or cute. I'm not writing letters to N.O.W. or anything, just expressing some disappointment here. As someone said above, it made me cringe a little. That's all.

I believe those were alpacas
the part when francine and haley were talking about ways to get backstage cracked me up...
"now, if you could fit a whole phone in your mouth, maybe then you could run with my crew."
;D ;D ;D
Quote"Jim's voice makes Enya sound like a Russian couple arguing in a bowling alley!"
I loved that line ;D
The $90 bootleg that literaly sounded like shit. :-[ Probably refrencing one of the tapes I made. ;D Of course I would never charge anybody, but it's nice to know there is a market.
I must say that, as an older male and major pig in my own right, I was glad my mom (the 65 year old I took to Monsters of Folk) fell asleep and missed "My Morning Staightjacket".
As a fan and of another generation, I can get past the crude humor to savor the MMJ references (Stan on the phone with his wife, using lines from I Will Sing You Songs- "money, gold, and diamond rings. just don't make it last any longer than it has to").
Another funny thing for me was that I once "dated" a girl named Abigail "Abby" Rhodes (no lie). She probably would have gotten backstage... Ah, memories...
What I love about this forum is that everyone is right. Share your thoughts and reserve judgement. Some will agree with you, some won't, but I think we all agree that MMJ is top notch and beyond the pale.

Nice to see you on here, alan! That episode was surreal, as I said before. When Stan was gushing about Jim in a room full of MMJ posters, I thinking about what you said after the Planetarium show: "My kids are going to have posters of Jim James on their walls". A major claim considering they just got done playing a show for 50 people. They've just about reached that status now and it's been fun watching the journey.
So sad.....felt like an MMJ infommercial. I like the concept of MMJ branching out but I'd rather they stay out of the mainstream and network TV. They're just perfect the way they are. Don't go there, MMJ!

Hey Dylan, it's good to be back!
I kept thinking about that during the show too. The other part I couldn't believe was when the main guy was caught sitting in his car listening to MMJ for three hours. It reminded me of right after the Planetarium show when Chris gave us some new cuts and we sat in C's old Camero outside your place and listening to them for, well, three hours! Surreal is just the only way to express how watching this episode felt.
@TEO and Ghost_on_TV- Hiya fellas!
Just saw it this afternoon. I thought it was awesome.
The bit on the bus with "Mahgeeta" was hilarious and I loved all the posters in the bedroom. I'm surprised OBH wasn't played though.
I need that doorbell.
The show was awesome! I now have it on my ipod to watch whenever I please 8-) My boyfriend wanted to know if it was a piss take or not... I said it was more in homage to MMJ than anything...
Pure genius ;D

My friend, who's first MMJ show was SF 12.2.12, was in from Tahoe last week. We sat down and had a nice laugh at the entire show, which I fortuitously was able to record a few months ago when I happened upon it about 1 minute before it was about to air on some cartoon channel in the area.
