I'm curious if anyone else out there can point to one song that made them fall in love with this band. I was introduced to them several months before Evil Urges came out so I'm a pretty late bloomer, and the first exposure I got was listening to Okonokos. Wordless Chorus/It Beats 4 U kick it off and I knew I wanted more, but it was DONDANTE that really blew my balls off. The guitar work in that song followed by the jazzy ending sealed the deal and I've been a dedicated fan ever since. I wouldn't even say it's necessarily my favorite song anymore, I just know it's the one that got me hooked. What about y'all?
Lay Low was the clincher at the start. The first songs I heard of their's were I'm Amazed, followed by Evil Urges, on SNL (May 10, 2008). I had a month until EU was released and picked up all previous albums (TF, AD, ISM, Z), Okonokos CD and DVD, and downloaded some shows. Lay Low rose to the top as the best song front to back, in and out. Not sure that's the case anymore, but I can't wait to see a complete Lay Low live this summer/fall, after a year of jam exerpts.
OBH on conan...really ISM as a whole though.
Lay Low>OBH>Dondante.
Late 2005-Early 2006. Introduced to the band by a young whipper snapper med student in my department. Forever in his debt :)
The Way That He Sings...saw alot of hype about the band, but stayed away because I hated the band name. But decided to put At Dawn in the CD player and soon realized what I had been missing.
But it was Mahgeetah that really turned me into a full-time fan...
ISM, but Steam Engine if I had to pick one specifically.
O Is the One That Is Real is the one that hooked me when first checking them out, then it was I Will Sing You Songs after I got ISM. And then, it was Lowdown at the first show that I saw that completely blew me away. Something went wrong with the input on Jim's guitar, an while they were fixing that (by getting him going on the Flying V), the rest of the band fell into a little jam for several minutes, then Jim came in and they just fucking ROCKED it. (If you have George Savage's video from 9-17-2004, you can see this)
Every time I see them play O Is the One That Is Real live, it still hits me. Especially at T5 last year: UNBELIEVABLE.
Hard to say. First heard OBH in 03 on some hard rock/metal website of all places. Buddy burned me ISM not too long afterwards. Always like it, but it wasnt til a few years later, after Z was already out, where it hit me how great of an album it really was, and how much I liked both albums, and they quickly became my favorite band in late 07/early 08 as I got all their other material that I didnt have.
I knew none of their music the first time I saw them, late night at High Sierra, showed started a little after midnight. I was hooked by the first 2 songs.

1st three songs to At Dawn are what got me hooked
Hearing Off The Record on the radio got me interested... the entirety of Z got me hooked, in particular Dondante and Oxen.
Good Intentions
Kidding - Wordless Chorus. Was in Cabo with my best friends, after several adult beverages, we're sitting out on a balcony, circa 3 AM, view of the lagoon at night, friend put on MMJ Z...album had just come out. Hooked.
I will be there when you die.
Stragulation! Blew my mind when I first got At Dawn. Still my favorite to this day.
Z, specifically Anytime.
2002 At Dawn
Lowdown > The Way That He Sings
Driving across the high plains of South Dakota with that big, big sky listening to that big, big sound :)
for me it was definitely Lay Low. Those guitarmonies in the second half of the song are sooo amazing.
not sure which songs, but seeing them open for Pearl Jam in Albany, Hartford and Boston did it for me.

Seriously a damn near perfect set list right there, and late night at a festival. jeez. mind = blown.
Run Thru - Patrick's drum stick light show thing he does - November 16, 2006 - Gypsy Tea Room - Dallas, TX
Ordered Okonokos DVD first thing the next morning.
Sing You Songs and Lowdown in no particular order...
They closed with Phone Went West - 2003 @ Hammerstein NYC. Blown Away.
Evelyn is not real got me hooked - I heard it on a complelation CD for Atlanta magazine back in 2004. I then bought It Still Moves and have been a fan ever since.
However - what realy got me hooked was hearing Run Thru live - I don't smoke, but I feel like I need a cigarette every time I hear that song live. It's more then music it's an experience.
I sing that song to my new born twin boys to put them to sleep. Actually, just repeat those two lines over and over. Kind of weird thing to sing I know, but the melody of that line seems to make them very calm.
Great song

Bermuda Highway was my first love when i was a casual fan.
Phone Went West while on a red eye flight led to me becoming much more than a casual fan
It's been a great 3 or 4 years at first, but Good Intentions really sealed the deal.

ha! mine was the year in review.
no, really, like many others i first saw them on you-tube, OBH on the conan show. i thought, damn, these guys rock.
but the "hooker" was seeing the rolling stone sessions, jim doing steam engine and masterplan solo. soooo freakin' good.
A little over a year ago I bought a used Okonosis DVD. I always saw MMJ lumped with alternative country, of which I am a fan, but not familiar with them. The first time I watched it I was almost thinking something was wrong. EVERY song was really good, and Golden was the only Alt. Country sounding song. Why aren't they really famous? I watched it about 5 times in the next 2 weeks. OBH was the one that I really noticed. Now Steam Engine on that album is probably going to be played at my funeral.
For me it was "Just one Thing" and "LayLow"
It's funny my friends who played MMJ all the time can remember specifically where we were driving when it finally hit me! lol
CHIMMJFAN
First it was One Big Holiday on Guitar Hero then I bought ISM and it was great but what really turned me into the die hard fan that I am is Off The Record.
Off The Record could easily be my Favourite song of MMJ's if not my favourite of all time. :)
Dondante from their first appearance on Austin City Limits.
not sure if it was one song specifically but i got hooked at the bonnaroo set in 06'...i still specifically remember dancefloors blowing me away
I owe it all to my best friend.... Right after it still moves was released..... We listened to it and I bought it the next day.... Every since then i have been a fan.....My favorite songs at first were I will sing you songs and one big holiday.... The girl i was seeing at the time hated them... We are no longer together... :) In no particular order now lay low, off the record, steam engine, magheeta (im listening to right now), lowdown, sooner, i will be there when you die, hopefully, just one thing, actually i love every damn song of theirs... My current favorites are probably where to begin and same in any language (which is a cover).... Cant wait to see them this summer
Really looking back it was Gideon that hooked me, but the way that he sings from Okonokos that reeled me in. I listen to it every morning to start my day. It makes my whole house wake up dancing.
I was at a Christmas party back in January of 2008 at my brother-in-law's place and he was like "you have to see this." In the middle of the party he puts on the Okonokos DVD for me...I was hooked by the first note of JJ's voice on "Wordless Chorus." Being a big Grateful Dead & Phish fan I loved live music, but when I saw these boys and what they could do on stage...my face melted for the first time. I was hooked by "Wordless Chorus" because it was the first song, but I fell completely in love with this band when I heard "Dondante" & "Steam Engine." It was the biggest musical revelation that I had ever experienced...it was like my ears had heard music for the very first time.
The Bear, Steam Engine, and OBH from the Bonnaroo dvd kept me goin for awhile, before I really started diggin them. The Evil Urges album with considerable help from Z really sealed the deal
First heard off the record on sirius at work and was interested. That weekend I picked up Celebración de la Ciudad Natal at my local record store and it sucked me in just like any good album should do and that was that.
The Bear, laying in bed with headphones on in complete darkness.

This almost made me cry. Perfect my friend. "Like hearing music again for the first time". I've likened it to that feeling of "First Love".
The first CD I owned of there was It Still Moves. Run Thru I'd say was the first song I really got hooked to. The whole CD is phenominal but that song inparticularly stuck out to me as just about perfect.

On OKO, when Run-Thru comes on I'm gone Daddy, Gone. That song makes my soul weep with joy.
bonnaroo '05 opened my eyes... ALL of Z got me absolutely addicted!!! :dankk2:
First song to intrigue me... "Wordless Chorus"
First song to make my eyes grow wide open... "At Dawn"
First song to make me get chills... "Gideon"
First song to make me smile from ear to ear... "The Way That He Sings"
Actually quick side note... the REAL obsession began in earnest on my honeymoon 6 years ago. I was in Aruba and got up very early to walk along this boardwalk to get breakfast for us. I had my ipod with me and on the way there the sun was rising and the sky was many shades of pink and blue on the water. I walked down to the ocean and sat on the beach and listened to "At Dawn". The rest is history.
A friend gave me a copy of "At Dawn" back in 2002 or 2003? Loved it. Then saw them on Conan in 2003 and was hooked. Got "It Still Moves" for Christmas that year and was hooked on them ever since.
Wordless Chorus. I heard it on the radio when Z first came out and instantly fell in love. I was aware of Golden prior to this, and though I loved the song I didn't really know who it was by. Then when I heard Off The Record played on the same station I was completely hooked and had to get Z and know everything about the band. Now I have all their albums and consider Okonokos to be one of the best live albums ever released - definitely in my top 5 of personal favorites. So a late bloomer perhaps but I've been completely enamored of the band since 2005.
Strangely enough, one that hasn't been mentioned and doesn't seem to get nearly enough love: Knot Comes Loose.

They played it at the Fillmore in San Francisco on New Year's Eve's Eve's Eve 12/29/2006. I had no idea how rare it was at the time. It was the show that busted my MMJ live cherry. I even got a setlist at the end of the show. They played a lot of rare shit that night. The show started off kind of mellow and ended kinda mellow with a delicious rawky road filling in between:
Intro
Into the Woods (Jim Solo)
I Needed it Most (Jim Solo)
Hopefully (Jim and Carl)
At Dawn
Golden
It Beats 4 U
Gideon
What a Wonderful Man
The Way That He Sings
X-Mas Curtain
Phone Went West

Laylow
One Big Holiday
Magheeta

Wordless Chorus
Off the Record
I Will Sing You Songs

Knot Comes Loose

Butch Cassidy (Jim and Carl)
Bermuda Highway (Jim solo)

If it wasnt OBH, it was Off The Record because I didnt
love the Jacket until after Z came out, and Off the Record was definitely the first song that hit me on that album
2006 Camden opening for Pearl Jam. Laylow. Still amazing live.
The Way That He Sings and Smokin from Shootin make me shiver each time I see them live.
I think it was The Bear.
It's a little fuzzy now, but I think it went like this: in 2006 I read an article in The Boston Globe about some band called My Morning Jacket playing with The Boston Pops. I went online to check out their music and the first song I remember hearing was Heartbreakin Man. I loved it and think I bought it from iTunes, but then went to the store to buy the actual Tennessee Fire CD. I put the CD on and played it and heard The Bear for the first time and it was magic. That was the song that really got to me. They have been my favorite band since then.
Being a huge Pearl Jam fan... the "Quick One" video on Imagine in Cornice is how I heard of them... Then hearing Evil Urges (the song) the first time I listened to that album at least 100 times the summer of 2008... Really got into their whole catalog after seeing War Begun on ACL that same year.
run thru lollapalooza 2007.i've seen them previously opening for pearl jam but that's when it clicked. On the way home i thought I wonder if they have the live album. after Okonokos that was it.

This show. Me and a buddy busted ass from MS to CA to see the second and third night of this run. We got into town on the night of this show and chose not to go...for some reason. I'm sure it was dumb. 2 years later we were headed to the Waterfront show and realized we were passing through Nashville a couple hours before the Jacket was going on. Did not make the same mistake twice. Jacket in town? I'm in. No question. And it was worth seeing Jim James ripping a nasty solo during War Begun, fireworks popping off in the background. I haven't seen someone handle an axe like that since Kurt Russell in the movie "Backdraft."

I was at that show. It was freaking beautiful listening to "War Begun" an the Titans had preseason fireworks shooting off at the same time. Was epic. Plus they played "Remnants" which I had been wanting to see played on the Evil Urges tour. Some people don't care for that song but I love it. It's very Pearl Jam-esc.

but, ahem. You know...staying on topic and all that. I guess it was OBH that got me interested.
Seeing them open with Oxen at the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas circa 2004 sealed the deal. My jaw dropped and stayed there.
What I wouldn't give to go back in time and see that one again.
Years ago it would be Bermuda Highway that pulled me in. Still gets me.
Master Plan was my first MMJ experience. After that, i knew i was onto something special.
Can't say a specific song... But experience! Saw them at Bonnaroo 05, but
Bonnaroo 06 is what sealed the deal for me!

Same here.
for me the greatness of ISM (still my top Jacket album) got me, but if i had to look back and pick one, it was probably OBH (followed very closely by Master Plan)
Dondante for me! I heard that song and t was love!
The first song I ever listened to was Wordless Chorus, but the one that made me fall in love with the band was Golden. I still remember driving in the car when that played for the first time.

not sure which songs, but seeing them open for Pearl Jam in Albany, Hartford and Boston did it for me.
me too. I had listened to them, but it was seeing the live show (no surprise to anyone here) opening for Pearl Jam in Boston that hooked me. That prompted me to see them again as headliner later that year and that show blew me away.
Librarian, Golden and Bermuda Highway!
Lay low. I really sat up and listened.
I've never been a guy with multiple favourite bands. I usually pick one of two and run with them for years. Started with MCR as a preteen, then I discovered both Pearl Jam and REM in high school. Aside from them and the White Stripes, I really didn't listen to anyone else. So, I felt like hearing new music. I looked up the highest rated albums of 2011 and saw that the Black Keys "Brothers" and My Morning Jacket's "Circuital" were critically acclaimed. I gave Brothers a majority of the listening at first, and took them in with more open arms. My Morning Jacket took a while to stick. I wasn't familiar with a sound like theres, and it was intimidating to listen to stuff I really didn't understand. But, when I heard Wonderful (The Way I Feel) on shuffle, it was a very pleasant surprise. Then, I'm walking home late at night and put on Slow Slow Tune and felt the most mellow I ever have. Once I started to get the idea, I really gave the album a listen and fell in love.
I bought all of their other albums on the same day months after buying Circuital (it took me too long).
My favourite album now is It Still Moves, and I've seen them live twice. Incredible.
My first experience with MMJ was Z. I'd heard about the band for a while and when I found out they were opening for PJ I picked up the CD. Laylow did it for me (though the whole album is great).

I discovered MMJ by accident, watching SNL on May 5, 2008. But it was Lay Low that hit me hardest at first. That dual guitar attack, with a nod (unintentional?) to ABB, pulled me in. My first show, it was Lay Low in Boston that I remember most, the abandon with which I rocked the fuck OUT! It unlocked a passion I've carried to every show, every time. The catalyst. The spark. Good fucking song!

Ah...I remember it well. I was hanging out with my brother from another mother one fall Saturday morning 2007. After a wake and bake, he showed me a cd and said "this is my new favorite band and my new favorite song" - GOLDEN I was intrigued by it and loved it right away. I play guitar and loved the tuning of the song. Soon after, I bought It still moves and I've had to replace that cd at least 5 times over the past 6 1/2 years.
I've always thought of myself as a true music lover. But MMJ's music is on a whole different level and their music takes their fans to that level with them.
Steam Engine...of course. Jaja
Everything about Okonokos intrigued me, but it was I Think I'm Going To Hell that first pierced into my skull and rearranged everything inside.
I had always heard of MMJ since At Dawn and was intrigued by them. However, I never pulked the trigger until Z came out. That got such overwhelmingly good reviews that I finally had to check them out.
It was April of 2006. I remember running into a good high school friend I hadnt seen in awhile at Borders when they were still open. I went there to buy Z and ran into him in the music section. I bought the album and since he got dropped off there due to his car being in the shop, I gave him a ride home. Well, it turns out he had some herb on him. So we lit up and drove around and listened to the gloriousness of Z. Just amazing! It Beats 4 U and Off the Record jumped out to us in particular. However, it wasn't until I dropped my buddy off that I truly zoned in and appreciated the genius of this album and band. I had bought some herb off of my friend and commenced smoking another couple bowls and listening to the rest of Z. Now in the proper chemical state, I just became overwhelmed by sheer pleasure at discovering this unbelievable music for the first time. It was Lay Low and the amazing super
jam at the end of it that blew my mind. Windows rolled down, grooving on the herb with the music caressing my ears and the cool night air soothing my body. I fell in love with them that very night and immediately bought their entire catalogue of material and have seen them live 7 times. A truly remarkable band that deserves all the love and success they get.
Dodante.
Either Off The Record or Gideon (heard it on wxpn) when "Z" came out
An old roommate told me about MMJ for nearly two years and I refused to listen because I thought the band's name was stupid! One night when I got home from work--I was working 2nd shift, 3-11pm--he was playing Gideon and it blew me away. I asked him who sang the song and he laughed and said "the band I've been trying to get you to listen to for two years". That was in 2009. MMJ is now my favorite band!
Surfing channels one night...passed by Austin City Limits. Wait. What was that? Went back! It was Jim's angelic voice singing "Touch Me-part two." Lucky for me, the show repeated 3 more times, so I got to see MMJ perform Evil Urges. Imagine how my mind was blown when I bought their other albums....one each month. I have listened to them exclusively on my car stereo since then. They brought the music back into my heart. What a great band! The happiest day of my life was when I got to see them at the Edgefield in Oregon in 2011. What a great venue; couldn't have been better.
Their cover of Tyrone.
For me, I was hooked as soon as I heard "Good Intentions"!!
Really, it would have to be "Hopefully"
Jims version of "I am going to Acapulco" in "I´m not there", never heard of him or MMJ before. Then I read an article in the German issue of Rolling Stone about Evil Urges. MMJ were refered to as the successors of Grateful Dead and The Band. Two of my favorite bands ever, blindly ordered Evil Urges was not that impressed, checked Amazon reviews on their other albums and ordered Okonokos.......hooked ever since

Smart move. I discovered MMJ a month before EU, but absorbed their back catalog such that EU was less a disappointment, as it was a small part of a greater discovery...
