cool. cant wait to hear the details! :D
Opening with Victory Dance into Circuital...they know what's up
Great festival setlist!
any setlist that has Steam Engine is a good setlist.
so sick brah. i feel so sorry for widespread - they have to follow this heat.
Thanks Linda. Great setlist, although the realities of another album, and therefore some classics dropping out, are apparent. When was the last MMJ show without Golden? (excluding T5). BH - check the spreadsheet ?!?
Dude they only played 90 minutes. Only 15 songs - something's gotta go.
MMJ eats sets like this for breakfast.
nice song selection. I dig it for festival set.

The King is lookin' FINE...
Really curious how they're doing Black Metal. Are they sampling the choir and horns via Bo? It must've been fun.
And I know First Light is gonna explode on stage. Like many of their great live songs, its a bit more muted on the album. And Victory Dance is a great opener; I start every morning playing it out of my driveway and off to work, often playing the whole album during my 45 minute commute. Into Circuital, then some classic Jacket, is sweet.
I know you guys are having a great time ('cause no one's posted yet). I wish I could join you but I think we all have a busy summer/fall to look forward to.
Report in, team. Details!!! Tapers???

Do you get sad when "Freak Out" abbruptly stops? I will not listen to the album straight through until I have that song complete.
four new songs! i still haven't heard first light or victory dance. kind of weird to read the set list and not be able to imagine the show. kind of rad, too. ;)
Awesome setlist. Touch Me Pt 2-->Holdin on to Black Metal-->OBH seems like an awesome way to close.
I don't mind Golden getting a break. It's not exactly a rocker (and this is a festival setlist), and they have to be tired of playing it at every show for ISM, Z, OKO, and EU tours. Truth be told, all these songs are epic and deserving. Their catalogue of greatness is becoming so huge that 5 shows with no repeats can each be individually considered awesome ;).
The 4 songs they played here are probably all going to be live monsters. Can't wait for the release party :D.
deetz on the set are needed

That was my point too - something's gotta go. And I'm not complaining - I've seen Golden at every show I've seen, so I'm fine with giving it a rest. I'm pumped as hell to hear the new songs. I was just making an observation. Excluding very short shows (levon helm, bridge school) I've never seen a setlist without Golden. If I said that there's never been a 15 song setlist without Golden since, say, 2002, don't you think that's noteworthy?

Good point and I agree. Although Golden was probably the first song that really grabbed me, I'm okay with not hearing it for awhile.
Off subject - has anyone heard from anyone at Hangout? I've got several friends that I figured I'd get a text from (couple of MMJ virgins), and I haven't heard from any on them. Just wondering if there are cell issues over there?
From the success of the Tennessee Fire show at Terminal 5 I hope the band realizes they need to incorporate some of those songs on the upcoming tour. Its twighlight now was one of the best songs I have ever seen them perform and to be honest that song, heartbreakin man and war begun are just flat out better songs than Im amazed and highly suspicious which seem to get played at every show now.

Totally agree.
I'm also hoping after T5 they will expand their setlists to include a lot of what we heard there.
I think the Louisville show will give us an idea of where the setlists will go. They're doing all of Circuital, and then ? If they do some of the gems we saw at T5, I'll be stoked, and hopefully that'll be a sign of what's in store for their shows.
I'm sure we'll ge a lot of Circuital at least through the first leg, and that's fine by me. If we get a nice big 2nd leg/fall tour, I'd love to see them realy change it up, show to show. Keep 7-10 staples in the set, and the rest just mix it up, and let it rip. ;)

TOTALLY! laura made a comment that she was surprised there's no real "rock" song on circuital, but, i disagreed. first light is straight UP rock n' roll & i'm dying to hear it live. (i'm dying to hear a lot of those songs live, actually...)
also - that emoticon is prob my fave of all time. i giggle every time!

I'm going to hold out hope until I see it live for myself, but that video has left me a bit let down on this tune. I hope I'm wrong and we get some positive first hand reviews from those that were there.

I thought it was good for the first time live...I'm sure they just wanted to do it right. Also, there isn't much time during these festivals to jam too much. On top of that, at a festival (where there are non-fans), it is always smart to play as many songs as possible within your time slot to try to connect with those who have no clue who you are.
This was a great setlist considering the time constraints of a festival performance. Love the new songs live! I felt it was also at the perfect time for the show with the sunset and light show at dark.
I don't want to form a solid opinion after one YouTube video viewing, but something was up with that performance. I really hope it was just the below-average video and audio quality. What was up with the random key/pitch change in the first few seconds? That MUST be a problem with the video... right?!
I would assume - From 12 feet from the stage it was pitch-perfect. Other than the people trying to sing along to Victory dance - I have that video on my iphone and it's painful.
There's no such thing as a bad Jacket setlist.
Sure, would've loved to hear War Begun or Cobra, but I'm not about to complain.
Every song they played was Heavy Duty goodness, full of monsterous energy

oh, i absolutely agree with you -it is noteworthy.
I guess I was being somewhat selfish in my rationalization: if I had been there I wouldn't have minded them cutting Golden bc I've heard it every time I've seen them live. Me rikey being surprised. And I would trade "golden" for "steam engine" (almost) any day.
If they don't play it at the Palace...that will be interesting.

Eric, I thought the same thing. I got my answer to an earlier question posted on this thread- heavy sampling of the horns and chorus. I was hoping, considering the radio play Black Metal is getting, we'd have more audience participation in the chorus parts, egged on by the boys. Hard to tell in the video and I'm sure being there it was great.
I'm also curious what changes they'll bring to the Mountain Jam setlist, as it is more of a jam band festival, so maybe some more extended rocking, more epic guitar tunes (Lay Low, Way He Sings, Run Thru, Dondante), more acoustic goodies (Golden, Bermuda Hiway, Where to Begin, etc.).
More than anything, I want to hear from our forum peeps! I've read Jason's take on his blog. Now to see what others have to say...
I thought some of the criticisms of the new album were ridiculous, but letting your opinions of a cool new tune change because of a hastily-made video of the song's first ever live performance on a mobile device, taken far from the stage with sub par sound quality? Not to mention the fact that you weren't there.
C'mon guys.
First time played; in a lot of ways it's probably just a warmup for the webcast. It does sound like they might have just screwed up at the beginning, but it'll sound better come webcast time.

I agree that audience participation is great, but I don't think we can really expect that right now, it was the first time this tune has been played live, and the record has not come out yet. Audience participation means that the song is well known by many. Also, it is frustrating to see people wanting the band to jam out, when they obviously just want to get the song right the first time.
Wait til the webcast, I feel like y'all won't be disappointed.

I acknowledged the 1st time live, not great video, and the fact that I wasn't there.
I happen to really like the new album including HOTBM. My opinion of the song hasn't changed, just as far as this video goes, my expectations of it live have.
Like john, I'm also wanting to hear what our forum peeps that were there thought.
On the HOTBM video, one of the spotlights behind the stage seems to be a little out of synch. Watch it; the 4th one from the left (or the 7th one from the right). It seems to be about .0037 seconds behind the rest of them. Pretty lame if you ask me. They better fix that shit before I see them live.

Hi Guys! Yesterday was wonderful! We caught our first glimpse of Patrick side stage checking out the Brandi Carlile set. We arrived a few songs into her set, and made it right up to (almost) the rail. She put on a great show, very sweet and enjoyable and closed it with an old 80s Alphaville song, "forever young." Actually brought a tear to my eye...but you know me :)
After she finished and some of her fans moved from the rail.....yep, you guessed it, bob and I bum rushed it. Seth was already up there so that was sweet. Ah, time for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. I'm sorry but she is just magnificent to look at. This was my 3 rd time seeing her, and it was definitely her most energetic set! She completely rocked it, and closed with Heart's "crazy on you" which was super fun! Great energy! Also fun to see Patrick and Tommy side stage checkin her out.
On a side note, the girl standing next to me threw her panties onstage. She also shared a story w me about how she credits GPN w saving her life. She had been in an extremely abusive relationship, and through their music, gained the strength to leave the brutality and make a life for herself. Powerful stuff, and great to watch her and help her get her first GPN setlist. Whew....
Ok, posting this now so I don't lose it..spotty wifi here....
Ok, so......the anticipation was building and we were all primed and ready, Tyler's Mom Leigh made it up by me. Bob and I got to stay on the rail for the whole show! We were surrounded by our troops!
So, sun starting to go down, breeze picking up, and out come the boys......Jim with some sort of contraption around his neck that was some sort of sampling/instrument thingy, but looked like a giant calculator. Love the insanity. So, the opener, as man y of you know was unfamiliar to me, but I did enjoy it a lot. I was trying to temper my excitement and listen and process.....it was a lot going on. I was also distracted w Jims longer and somewhat sun kissed hair. You know that hair :) mmmmmmmm
Circuital was fanastic! Anytime and Magheetah were super high energy! HOTBM was awesome! I was really intrigued by the way they managed to get all of those sounds in there! Steam Engine, as always, was pure bliss. The sun setting, the breeze blowing, Jim reminiscing about his childhood family vacations in the area, and it was all I could do to not have my head explode! I must note that Carl was in stellar form, highest energy I've seen him! I love watching Tommy, with his serious face, and then once in awhile getting a smile. Patrick is a beautiful animal, and am always flabbergasted with how he wails! I didn't have a great view of Bo, but he was on point and creating some beautiful sounds back there.
OBH was super high energy and kicked my ass! I was sad it was over, but was prepared fr the shorter set. Of course we lingered, hoping for more, but it just want possible w the schedule. We also attempted to get setlist but no go.
Beautiful day, night, beach, music, people. A treasured memory for us, for sure!
Oh and I did give snowy a shout out, but don't think he could hear me :)
Night guys! wish you all were here!!

GAH, that one guy! He somehow made it to the Black Angels show in OKC last night too and really kind of fucked it up for me. Hey, that one guy, when a dude in the band holds up a finger telling you to shut the fuck up, shut the fuck up. God knows how anyone could make enough noise to distract from one of the loudest bands I've ever witnessed.
Great to hear from the Hangout crowd! You guys are the best.

Also, wouldn't be surprised if Butch Cassidy is a staple on the tour after the released the live download.

You're almost certainly right about Butch Cassidy. According to Tom, it's one of their current live favorites. Can't wait to see it! Hopefully the older cuts get scattered in there as well... there probably won't be many at the beginning, but as the tour goes on and setlists expand, there should be some surprises thrown in there ;). I saw Evelyn on the Evil Urges tour; what an awesome number that was.
Tons of pics from the festival...

Frenchy is indeed awesome. I got a private tour of his studio in Nawlins at about 3 a.m. several years ago...great stuff.
Looked like a great Festy. I heard they're gonna expand it next year and make it even bigger and badder - they want to draw a crowd size similar to ROO. We'll see...looks like an amazing place to watch some music though.
So people come on, spill it - did the new stuff make ya wanna freak out? REPORTS ARE NEEDED

still tryin to piece together the weekend..
despite my initial thoughts that MMJ might have gotten the shaft as a friday night co-headliner.. i think the Hangout guys did a really good job with the scheduling of the big acts. each day definitely had a different vibe and at the same time meshed together into one big blur of a weekend long beach party.
you could tell the boys were holding a little bit back before the big Circuital tour but they wanted to give quite a bit of a tease.. hearing the "setting SUUUUUN" lyric on the first sunset of the weekend was heaven on earth to me. Got to rock out with my mom and a bunch of other buddies on the rail right in front of Jim and that was awesome.
The Roland sampling box that JJ was using for some of the songs was very kooky and he was carrying it around like a possessed magician. I was curious to see how they would add in the sampling to some of the new stuff and honestly thought it packed quite a bit of a "live" punch while still sounding somewhat like the album. I remember looking up at the sky at a bunch of kites flying on the beach during Steam Engine and then seeing a row of about 5 or 6 seagulls gliding over the top of the stage in perfect formation and thinking about how there was no other place I'd rather be.
Also of note, Carl Broemel wearing the Wayfarers and rockin' the Sax and ripping out some shrieking guitar solos made me think about how allowing the band members to take some time off from playing together to pursue their own solo projects has really made them 100 times better as a band. Can't wait to hear about Bo's instrumental project.
The Surf Style Stage had the best three acts of the fest in my opinion as far as atmospherics and vibe goes. (MMJ/Flaming Lips/Black Keys) Half the set was in the last few minutes of daylight and just when the sun set and the light shows started you could feel the tempo rise and the bands were feeding off that energy for sure. I could feel the sand shaking underneath my feet from all the peeps jumping around and grooving during some points of the weekend and it felt incredible.
What a great weekend with a bunch of great people.

sweet thanks man.
love the segue possibilities. Victory Dance->Circuital->Off The Record is pretty sweet. it'll be curious to see if they rotate the song they segue into for slot 3. they definitely could.
Patrick on the Tom's during Smokin' from Shootin = bitchin. unless he always does that and this recording sounds bassier. sounds thumpin.
I was there about 10 feet from the rail, in the middle at the MMJ show. The opener blew me away and set the tone for the rest of the show. They totally brought it, complete with Jim James power slide. They even fit in some mini jams in between songs. Carl is heavy on the sax on one of the new songs, I thought it was the best of the show. I didn't get a good listen to HOTBM. My wife got overheated/over-rocked and had to take a seat on the sand.
Kudos to the organizers of the Hangout Fest. EVERY band there gave it their all, the sound system was immaculate, I didn't see a single fight or anyone get thrown out and it all went down just a few yards away from the Gulf of Mexico. The Hangout will now be my yearly vacation.
i'm still trying to piece together the weekend let alone the MMJ show...
despite my feelings of the album, HOTBM is terrific live...i think they'll be opening up with Victory Dance from here on out for a while...great 1-2 punch in the beginning with Circuital. Steam Engine and TMP2 were off the charts for me. the short set was dissappointing but only because we've been spoiled and they had to stick to that damn schedule (almost to the minute)...
this is the best festival i've ever been to, hands down. ....i can't imagine going with a better group of people...my brain is still fried....

beautiful.
I was there and it was EPIC!! they killed all the new material and i might have creamed my pants for steam engine, but that is irrelevant. I have a ton of videos i just need to figure out how to put on here.

i saw the birds as well and the only thing i could think was, 'god i wish the band could see this'. it is almost as if they hovered above the stage for a listen. it was an absolutely perfect moment.
God this show was amazing, as well as the festival.
Great things about the festival:
1. STEAM ENGINE!!!
2. Victory Dance live killed it, and Jim was air-humping everything
3. The rest of that amazing, amazing, amazing set.
4. Meeting seth, ruckus, trish and bob, jason, and darkglow at some point or another down there. Stood on the rail next to seth, it was a good time.
5. PAUL FUCKING SIMON - he and his backing band blew me away.
6.The Flaming Lips while they we're playing
7. The atmosphere: feet in the sand, couches, showers, beaches, small enough fest.
8. The other acts I caught all the way through: Old Crowe, Grace Potter (what a babe :D), Ump's, Panic. Among others I saw bits and pieces of.
9. Steam Engine again.
Things I didn't like:
1. Foo closing out Saturday. I'm sorry to the fans, but they aren't a great festival closer. I feel like they are a talented group of people that waste their talent on cliche, poppy hard rock. Dave seems like he just loves selling records. I wasn't feeling them at all. Just my opinion though, obviously they are a beloved band. (Their early "cover set" was cool though)
2. I feel like the fest sold 35,000 tickets, but only planned on 20,000 people showing up. The lines to get wristbands and get in could get ridiculous, and I hear their were more than a couple accidents with those shuttles. I know some one a bike got hit by one, and there might have been some other fender benders. I was close enough to walk, but I feel bad for the people who had to stand in 2 hour lines to get home on those shuttles.
3. The Flaming Lips didn't manage their time very well. Too many breaks for too long for a festival set.
4. It might have been me, but I think the Black Keys we're turned way down. I couldn't hardly hear it, and I was fairly close. We ended up leaving and getting really close to Paul Simon, which was a great choice. I love the Keys, and it wasn't their fault, but it seemed to quiet, and they need to be turned up to 11.
Over all, I think this was the most fun festival I've been too. It was a great time. In all honesty, despite the shortness of the set, that might have been the best MMJ show I've ever seen. The energy was there, everyone was having a great time. Band and fans.
Somehow by Sat, I had snagged a VIP/Artist wristband and got on side stage or Cee Lo and VIP for Foo Fighters and Paul Simon. I have the opposite opinion about the FF, I always loved Dave Grohl but had never seen them, I thought they were incredible and I thought (no disrespect) Paul Simon's set was pretty boring and he left the stage at 10:20 (supposed t play till 11). He did come back and play two encores (including Sounds of Silence) but I was also hoping more people would jump on stage with him.
Overall, this festival was incredible. I'm kind of sad because it's only going to double in size. Tbd and Bobster were great traveling companions and they had the sweetest condo imaginable, within a 10 min walk to the festival, 2 pools, the ocean view....Had so much fun with DGlow, Ky, Steam, Ruckus (and DGlow's mom and friends)...such a great group, great meeting EasyRyder and seeing Seth on the rail, everywhere I turned, I seemed to know someone..(including Matisyahu and Michael Franti on our flight back yesterday!)
Musically, other than MMJ, Grace Potter nailed it (including a killer Folsom Prison cover), I enjoyed OCMS, DBT, Portugal the Man, Jonathan tyler ? and the Northern Lights, Foo Fighters..
However, for me the top 2 musical moments were GIRL TALK (OMFG) that tent was INSANE, glad I stayed after DBT and waited because it was one of the craziest shows I've seen. I was skeptical about someone doing that type of thing, but it makes for a killer show. Wish i had gotten on board earlier. And also, the little Justin Townes Earl set on a smaller side stage, i sat back in a cabana chair and watched with about 30 other people...incredible. Can't stand his stage banter becasue he seems like a real prick, but he is definitely a talented dude...
already planning next year---this is the festival to end all festivals..never experienced anything that much fun and vacation-like

Grace Potter's Heart cover was cool too. She was great. I wish I was off work tonight so I could go see her at Headliners. I only watched her to camp for MMJ, but man I'm glad I did. Great rock band with a female front. I've been into female singers a lot lately, and this was no exception.
oh yeah, and the RS cover was cool.
I hope to never miss this fest again. If you would have told me last year that MMJ was playing, I would have bet my life I would have been there. But, what can you do?
For any of you peeps wanting to get back to the Gulf Coast, there is another festival coming up in October on Pensacola Beach. This is a second year fest trying to compete with Hangout. They are making the lineup announcement on Tuesday, the 31st.
I know Toubab Krewe will be playing it this year (that might get TEO down here). Also, I've been hearing Jane's Addiction and Weezer getting thrown around a lot. Not going to be a top level fest like Hangout but hopefully it'll be fairly strong.

This makes me more upset that I had to go to a wedding instead. I think it's quite possible the best line up this year. I will be there next year for sure. My best friend has a condo down there wich makes it harder to swallow.
Glad Yall had a great time. Sounds like a wonderful time in the gulf.

agreed, steam engine was ridiculous, foo fighters were not that great and they were NOT prepared for 35,000 people. They ran out of beer multiple times and on friday they made me pour out my water, then they ran out of water at the fest! wtf, either way it was a great festival and look forward to going next year!
ps the psychedelic ferris wheel was awesome!!!
Hangout festival "highs"
Two great traveling partners, my lovely wife and the lovely Christine
Well appointed condo

Best band MMJ
Best songs HOTBM, Steam and OBH....they were all good but these three had special energy and a few bonus riffs that seemed to come with the moment
Hanging onto the rail alongside my wife on our wedding anniversary for MMJ
All of the great MMJ fans surrounding us, some we knew well, some we knew from the board and some new friends make that night
Grace Potter doing Folsom Prison from Johnny Cash

Sharing a special cigar moment late night on the beach with Ruckus
Our faces lighting up every time we saw Ky
Royal Reds at Mikees.....thanks to Ruckus
Portugal the man
Misty's all around

I will bring my hula hoop!
we all need to practice, we have to out do those Panic heads!
So I gotta go all Beer Fest and get to that state of mind to remember anything that happened at the good ole Hangout Fest.
Hangin' with and meetin' so many cool peeps. Wow! What a time. Awesome to hang with the crew and it was great seeing scosby again.. Also very nice to briefly meet ewind for the first time as well as Goldeneagle. Bob, Trish, and Ky are honestly too kind hearted to be real. :) darkglow and twofingers know how to do it right! Penny is....Penny ;D
Some things that stick out:
Cutting off the top of my little toe right before leaving my house to go to the airport on day one. DOH! Kept me out of all hot tubs and swimming pools and oceans except for at one in the morning of day two. Then I felt my toe flopping around in the waves and decided to get out.
Meeting the legendary easyrider who would magically supply me with my favorite of all favorite beverages, Evan Williams Black Label, in the most opportune moments. I.e., one of the rail dead center for both MMJ and DBT, and gobs and gobs of it. Great to meet someone that rocks as crazily as me at shows! You are the man! 8) We shall rock again!
Watching twofingers tie up darkglow who was resting his eyes on our balcony at 2 in the morning with a bungie cord to a beach chair than watching darkglow's awesome buddy crawl under the chair and jostle him while immobilized.
Having a magic wand fight at the souvenir shop with twofingers. Potter and Malfoy had nothing on us.
Royal Red shrimp! Thanks to a local that Ky met on the plane that recommended them to her. I LOVED 'em!
Smoking Misty 120 menthols with Justin Bieber.
Meeting Toucan Sam late night by the pool. That guy had the hook up if you know what I mean. (rhymes with boot soups)
Frozen daquiris.
The great burrito toast (as in CHEERS!)
darkglow's beautiful outfits. I particularly enjoyed the flamboyant hula hooping sheik and naked Slimer.
Discussing why most wolf tshirts and souvenirs have three or more wolves on them. Does three constitute a pack?
Long Ash cigarettes and spark rocks.
Darkglow's mother screaming, "Grace Potter and THE NOCTURNALS!" a few times and having access to a massive black market supply of Misty 120s.
Consuming at least 8 types of beverages prior to noon everyday.
Oh yeah and the music happened :)
EDIT: I forgot to add that I very briefly met General Wesley Clark at Atlanta Airport. NEATO!
Glad everyone seems to have returned home safely from Hangout! I'll try to avoid being repetitive, but the highlight of my experience was meeting so many of you folks (you know who you are ;)).
This was my first show where I met forum folk, and we sure as hell had the best fanbase of the festival. And I assure you I speak with complete and total bias in that statement.
In the words of Ruckus:
We shall rock again! There was just too much good music to summarize, so I'll keep it MMJ related:
TMIGTS II was the best version Ive heard live to date. I've never been a huge fan of it live, but this version was full, and it definitely reached heights I've never heard before.
Smokin' from Shootin' was also very intense. I zoned in on the seated Carl and he seemed like a giant on that pedal steel. As others have said, he has become larger than life on stage and I love his presence. It felt more like a stand-alone tune rather than a transitioner, and I really enjoyed it that way.
The other festival set norms were mind blowing as always, and Jim seemed to have some pep in both his step and vocals that night.
As far as the new ones go, I cannot wait to see how they evolve. They seemed refreshingly raw onstage, and despite what they lacked in perfect flow they truly shined with intensity. All of the fresh tunes had a new kind of inexplicable excitement that surrounded them- Victory Dance and Black Metal especially.
This was only my second time hearing Steam Engine, but the birds above stage and the "red patoka sea" lyric next to the gulf made it mind-blowingly sublime. When Jim hopped up onto the drum set platform and shared the moment with Patrick my mind blew to bits.
Despite the early onset of severe Evan Williams-induced dehydration that I was experiencing, this was a warm-feeling festival Jacket set that I am truly grateful to have shared wth like minds. Let the summer tour begin!!!
May you all be steamed as we were- helplessly and happily:
Thanks all for the great re-caps. Sounds like so so much fun. Nice to hear that the music is what brings everyone together but the people are what helps make it all so special.
Guessing that the memories of the good times aren't likely to fade anytime soon.

thank you so very much for bringing this image back to my mind. I was afraid I lost epic moments of this show somewhere in the caverns of time forever. I also thought I was the only one to spot the uniformed seagulls amidst the kites and setting sun.
Was a mmj virgin and am now forever a follower haha Must say seeing them for the first time on the beach has to be the greatest way to. I cant wait to catch em again in charlotte!
MMJ killed it at the hangout. there were a lot of fans that made it to their set. incredible energy all around.
victory dance was my call for opener and it was incredible as were all of the new songs that got played. but first light is the new monster in the set. words can not describe how great this was live. it has rock anthem written all over it.
MMJ was probably the biggest selling point for my group to head down and none of us were disappointed; although, 1.5 hours was not long enough. a couple of older tunes as a bone would have been nice. was really hoping for honest man or phone went west.
