Title: I love this band!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: MMJ_fanatic on Jan 29, 2004, 05:41 PM
I love these guys.  I have never been knocked out so quickly by a group to the point where I had to immediately run out and get everything they have put out!  It all started last fall for me and I wish I had heard about them SOONER as I know they have been around for several years now.  Anyway, my path has finally crossed theirs and you can bet I am on for the whole ride. ILOVETHESEGUYS!ILOVETHESEGUYS!ILOVETHESEGUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!  Does that need any clarification?

Kind of funny that you posted your reaction to hearing MMJ the first time.

My neighbor and I had a pretty big get together this weekend and he broke out At Dawn toward the end of the night.  Everyone was outside talking and getting right as the intro started up.  By the end of the song, the place was dead silent.  Halfway through Lowdown, a guy looks up like he's seen a ghost and says, "What is this?"  After I informed him, he then asked, "It's brand new, right?  Just released?"  He was shocked that he hadn't heard it yet.  I'm pretty sure he was at the front door of the record store when they opened this morning.

Damn right. This thread was pertinent in 2004 but at this point in time it only makes sense as a reminder of past greatness. Not that that's a surprise though. Most bands only make two or three really good albums before they start sucking. I guess you need to be a little bit young and stupid to make an awesome rock n roll album.

Wow!  Way to go digging into the threads jjsmalls!  I still remember the night I started this thread--drunk, jeans freshly creamed from a blow yer head off show in Northampton MA, and highly jazzed about a band that has stormed my musical castle.

Grandpaboy--lighten up with some carbon monoxide or something, maybe go see em live (that will def cheer ya).

"Go see em live". What? How? Where? I'm from Denmark, and it's pretty obvious these guys hate Europe in general and Scandinavia in particular. Whenever it's time for MMJ to come anywhere near the peaceful, freedom-loving kingdom of Denmark, Jim develops some lethal heart condition or throws himself off stage, landing vital organ first on one of the most deadly angles of his Flying V. So you'll excuse me if I refuse to lighten up. As for carbon monoxide, that stuff can be pretty dangerous too, but you probably already knew that, right?

From their 2008-2009 tour, it looks as though MMJ spent a hell of a lot more time in Europe than in my part of the United States (the northeastern region).

The percentage of shows by continent for 2008-2009:
North America - 56%  (northeastern US - 5%)
Europe - 24%
Australia - 17%
Asia - 3%

I've only seen them once since I discovered them in May of 2008.  Since then, I've caught up on the history of the band and it seems pretty clear to me that MMJ owes a lot of their early success to the European fan base, particularly Belgium and Amsterdam.  And they keep coming back!  Hardly suggests they "hate Europe."

I look at European countries as, geographically, similar to our states.  And since they recently announced a number of dates in the American southeast and virtually nothing near me (in New England), I am taking advantage of the modern modes of human transport to get my ass down there for a few shows.

Do I wish they'd play down the street?  Fuck, yeah!  Not gonna happen, though.

Cheer up, my dour European friend. If they haven't made it close to you lately, go to them.  Or don't.

By the way, mileage data between European stops on the 2008-2009 tour and Denmark (I picked Copenhagen as a central location).  Your welcome  :)(I'll let someone else convert this to kilometers).

FYI, the distance from my home to the first of three shows I'm attending in a few weeks:  Hillsboro, NH to Birmingham, AL is 1246 miles!

2008-07-19 Benicassim Festival - Benicassim, Spain   1590 miles
2008-07-15 The Forum - London, UK    876 miles
2008-07-13 T In The Park Festival - Glasgow, UK    1270 miles
2008-07-12 Oxegen Festival - Kildare, Ireland   1274 miles
2008-07-11 Rescue Rooms - Nottingham, UK  1006 miles
2008-07-09 Le Trabendo - Paris, France  863 miles
2008-07-08 Melkweg (The Max) - Amsterdam, The Netherlands  574 miles
2008-07-06 The Hop Farm Festival - Kent, UK    830 miles
2008-07-04 Rock Werchter Festival - Werchter, Belgium   656 miles
2008-07-02 Luxor - Cologne, Germany   549 miles
2008-07-01 Gruenspan - Hamburg, Germany    292 miles!
2008-06-29 Glastonbury Festival - Pilton, UK   957 miles
2008-06-27 Academy - Manchester, UK   1083 miles
2008-06-26 Academy - Bristol, UK   992 miles
2008-06-25 Leadmill - Sheffield, UK  1049 miles

Compare this to only 5 shows in the northeastern US, including two shows in New York City.  Having a hard time feeling sorry for Denmark, sorry.

(I see your from NC.  I lived there for 11 years (1990-2001): Chapel Hill, then Greensboro for school, Durham, then Mebane.  My first teaching job was Roxboro, north of Durham.  And I love the Boone and Asheville areas.  They remind me of my native NH.)

Way to go, johnny! Yeah, boo hoo, Denmark. My home state of Oklahoma has remained Jacket-free since...forever. The closest MMJ has played to me is Dallas, a four-hour drive from Stillwater. My accumulation of MMJ miles through the years is fairly significant, and has been documented in another thread about road tripping. I hear there's a pretty good rail system in Europe too.

I refuse to cheer up. And I must say it's a cold, cold heart that can't feel sorry for a country which has been stood up twice by MMJ, a country which the boys haven't come anywhere near for almost two years and which they probably won't come anywhere near for another year or two. As for my heart, it bleeds with sympathy for the sad plight of the northeastern US – and yes, Crispy, despite your nasty gleefulness it bleeds for the state of Oklahoma as well.

I've actually received many compliments on my exceptionally warm heart.  After your post, I checked out the number of shows near you, including Germany about a 5 hour drive (and let's not forget Europe's rail service; something to be proud of) and can't imagine not taking the trip.  That's just me.

If Denmark wants MMJ doing a show IN DENMARK than I would propose less whining and more positive MMJ fan activity.  I can't blame MMJ, however, for deciding not to play in New Hampshire when there are only two members on this forum from the Granite State.  When planning a tour, it seems foolish to play to half-filled venues.  As a fan of music, I often wish I lived in Boston or New York or San Fransisco, where there are more opportunities to see live music.  Its a trade off.  If you want to see more Jacket, move to Brussels or London.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time.  I'm just saying, make lemonade, bro!  (will that make sense to him?).

I refuse to make lemonade, and I really wish someone somewhere somewhen would have taught you that it's extremely impolite to refer to other people in the third person when you're actually in the same room with them – as if they didn't exist, as if they were an imbecile, a baby, a cute pet animal for you and your equals to laugh at. I would also ask you to please stop editing my posts; makes it hard for people to distinguish my lucid truths from your bizarre nonsense. Thank you. Other than that, I don't think I can help you any further. And since this whole thread is beginning to make me regret that I was ever born, I'll just stop my "whining" and cede the point to you. One last question though: What's it like being tone deaf? Can you still enjoy music? Or do you just follow bands around, practising "positive fan activity"?

First, Grandpaboy, I greatly appreciate your heart bleeding for my poor state, lord knows we (I) deserve it. Second, lighten the fuck up, bro, as Johnny has tried repeatedly to get you to do. I understand how difficult it is to be a My Morning Jacket fan in a land where not only do the boys rarely (never) visit, but fellow peeps are also hard to come by. And you have it worse that us North Americans, no doubt about it. But the fact is you have had ample opportunity in recent years, and with a modicum of effort. It has not been that hard to scratch that MMJ itch, or even to just sympathize with like-minded music fans and not bitch so much. "Positive fan activity"? The day I attend an My Morning Jacket show and don't enjoy it is the day I will cease to be a fan, and until then, I have nothing but positive things to say, no matter how far I have to travel to see that show.

QuoteMaske en dag vi kan nyde en ol sammen pa et min Formiddag Jakke concert.

Oops, Mr. Yac, I'm sorry to have left you hanging there, waving the white flag. Busy day yesterday. Your offer is very cute, and hopefully one day we shall have a beer together at an MMJ show. Anyway, you had me at the word "Truce" in your previous post, and besides, it's all just a load of nonsense on my part. I'll be the first to admit that I've made some absolutely daft decisions regarding MMJ (related) shows in the past. To be honest, I don't remember ever even considering going to the Hamburg show in July 2008, and I'm not sure why – maybe the Copenhagen show that later got cancelled had already been announced at that point, or maybe I had reason to believe that a show would be announced, as indeed it was. It gets worse though. For an MMJ fan, the next best show to go to in recent times would probably have been a Monsters of Folk show, right? Now, when MOF played here in Copenhagen in November last year, they literally played "down the street from me" to paraphrase your first post; I think it's about a quarter of a mile from my front door to the venue where they played (the same venue where MMJ were supposed to have played in 2008). Nevertheless, I didn't go, because I'm an idiot. Even though I had known about the show for months I still managed to be absolutely tied up with work when the night finally came, plus, when I realized I wouldn't make it, I sort of justified it to myself with this retarded line of thinking that went something like "Hell no, the first time I go see Jim, it has to be with MMJ, not MOF." Big mistake, because by all accounts, MOF totally killed it that night. All the music mags and blogs gave the concert rave reviews, and by late December, when the media printed their "Best of 2009" lists, one of the largest newspapers in Denmark (you could probably compare it to the NY Times) even went as far as calling it the best rock n roll show of 2009 (or maybe one of the three best, can't remember exactly). Actually, I'm not sure if anybody ever posted anything about that show, so here's a link to a (six-starred) review from the largest music magazine in Denmark:

http://gaffa.dk/anmeldelse/35811

I can't be bothered to translate the thing, but judging by your beer proposition, you're a fairly adept user of Google Translate, so maybe you can get an idea of the content that way. Besides, I'm mostly posting the link for the sake of the archives; I seem to remember there being a thread with MOF setlists, and this review contains just that (the parenthesized info after some songs states who performed the song and who originally wrote it; songs with no parenthesis were obviously written and performed by MOF collectively. By the way, the setlist resembles those from most of their other shows; the only anomaly appears to be that Conor played "Amy In The White Coat", and as the review explains, he did so because some female fan had asked him to before the show). Oh, and also for the sake of the archives; remember how during these concerts Jim would usually take the time to lay some seriously over the top praise on Will Johnson? Well, I just read on some blog, that his Will Johnson saying of the night went like this: "All men are created equal, but Will Johnson is a cut above the rest!" As for recordings from the show, I don't think any exist. Apparently, the recording police were in full effect that night, but a couple of concert goers did manage to snatch a few videos and put them up on Youtube. Here's a full length "Lullaby + Exile" (mediocre sound quality, but a nice performance and shot pretty up close):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nWqRmdxkno

And here's a somewhat louder but only partial "Whole Lotta Losin", shot from the balcony:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvLIEYF_k0g

> Look at Jim dancing on stage in Copenhagen, just a few feet away from 500 Danes. It hardly looks like he hates Denmark, Scandinavia, Europe, or anything else for that matter, and I'm amazed that anyone would even take me halfway seriously when I suggested that he does. I was simply expressing my wish to see an MMJ concert sometime soon, and yes, preferably not in Germany but here in my own country where I can drag along a couple of friends who do like MMJ but not to the point where they would travel to another country and spend money on trains and hotels to see the band. Call it positive fan activity with a twist – or call it negative fan activity if you wish. It's all the same. I realize that you probably didn't take my post too literally, but rather used it as an occasion to express your own frustration with the lack of MMJ shows in your part of the US – and maybe nag a bit on stupid Europeans who think you Americans have it all to easy. That's fine. I totally understand. In the best of all possible worlds, no one willing to travel 1246 miles to see their favourite band would have to do so. Sadly, this world sucks. Somewhere in South Africa some kid is reading this thread, thinking we're all a bunch of MMJ spoiled assholes. By the way though, your idea that I should move to Brussels or London is almost as absurd as most of my propositions in this thread. Although it does make sense to consider Europe as comparable to the US in a strictly geographical sense, we're still talking about three different countries with three different languages, currencies, cultures etc, so for one thing, it might be hard for me to find a job in those places. More to the point, Copenhagen is actually a pretty good place when it comes to concerts – at least as good as Brussels – and in fact that's one of the reasons I moved here (I grew up in the opposite end of the country). Let me name a couple of examples, using bands that are roughly similar to MMJ in terms of size and appeal: In the past few years, Wilco have already played here twice (August 2007 and November 2009) and they're coming back in may this year. Band of Horses have been even more present: They played here in March 2008, July 2008, August 2009, and they'll be back in just a couple of weeks (18th of April). And no, MMJ hasn't been here once during all that time, but they have had intentions of coming here twice, and it's just bad fuckin luck that they we're forced to cancel both times; rumour even has it that they actually did play here on one occasion many years ago, but I can't find that show in the archives, and besides, it was way before I had my own baptism by reverb. All in all though, I think I've positioned myself in an okay spot for seeing the Jacket, and I'm confident that I will see them before too long, and probably right down the street too. Anyway, this post is ridiculously long and I've just used up my annual quota of forum time so let's just make peace. This thread's no fun anymore anyway.  Except for this:

Quotelighten the fuck up, bro

I refuse to lighten up. You lighten the fuck up. Go back, read the thread again, look carefully, take in the details, and then tell me who should learn to "sympathize with like-minded music fans"?

Grandpaboy---I hope you get to a show, soon. Nothing wrong w/loving them so much you're at a point of frustration.

In spite of the rail system, I think Americans travel more and easier than Euros. (from my limited experience in Eur). So it's not as big of a deal to travel 400 miles to see MMJ here as it is over there. (i think culturally, economically, etc) I don't think it's a fair argument to compare distances and all the little extra JJ appearances in this country, where we all speak a common language and can all stay at the cheap holiday inn express (holla!).... That said, MMJ have made a fair effort to play in Europe. At least you acknowledge you had a few missed opportunies to see the flying V in action. i could be wrong about all of this.

crispy-never knew that about oklahoma....do you think JJ is just not a sooners fan or something?

Sorry grandpaboy, I had a bit of stupid going in me then and went overboard.

Penny - I'm not sure what the deal is here, I guess it's probably just a deal where the guys in charge of setting up tours don't think of Oklahoma as a place where MMJ would get a lot of love, and they may be right. I have a feeling though that they'd fill up the Cain's Ballroom pretty well nowadays. I've seen Wilco, Neko Case, Ryan Adams, Black Keys, The Decemberists, Mars Volta, and others, and missed several other comparable acts in Tulsa and OKC over the years.

And I'm sure JJ isn't a dirtburglar fan ;)

Crispy,
No worries. I should probably work on expressing myself a little less ambiguously or mastering my ironies a little better or something. That sort of stuff tends to get lost in translation between frengers. A classic message board gate, I suppose.

Penny,
It's probably true that Americans travel more than Europeans, and part of the reason may be that it's easier over there, as you suggest. In my experience at least, the European railroad has nothing on your American Greyhounds. I once rode a Greyhound from San Francisco to Minneapolis, and it only took like 5 hours – plus, we got to eat at McDonalds every 15 minutes. It was totally sweetpickles. The Danish railroad is old and tired and can't compete with that sort of awesomeness at all. That said, I think Europeans also tend to be stuck in an Old Europe kind of mindset, where crossing a border is only something you do when you're going on a longer vacation, which causes us to visit other countries far less often than you guys will visit other states. Of course, you guys are also more likely to have friends and family in other states than we in other countries, but there's still something absurd about this European "fear" of crossing borders, and I suppose that was one of the points Johnny Y. wanted to make, when he set out to scientifically prove that I am the laziest ass to ever set cheeks on the soil of the earth.

BH,
Glad you could use the setlist. I don't know if there are any Swedes around on this board, but if not, I guess one of the seven missing setlists might be the one from the Stockholm show that the boys played the night before Copenhagen. As it happens, I stumbled upon something like a Stockholm setlist on a Danish music site earlier today:

The link doesn't work for me right now though. Don't know if it's just down temporarily or if it's gone for good. Anyway, all this may be old news to you. Goodnight.

That's the American way!  :-[ ;D

You're lucky. I once took the Greyhound from Central Illinois to Chicago (about a 2 hour ride) and the guy next to me touched himself the entire time. That was def NOT sweetpickles. :'(

That is def dillpickles. I once rode the bus from Fort Collins, CO to Perry, OK. It took so long I thought I was going to die, I finished the only book I had with me and had to start reading it again, I almost lost my sanity, and with it the inhibition to keep from touching myself. Almost, I said.

And oh yeah, the only place we ever stopped to eat was McDonald's.

QuoteI suppose that was one of the points Johnny Y. wanted to make, when he set out to scientifically prove that I am the laziest ass to ever set cheeks on the soil of the earth.

Well, I am a science teacher.  ;)  (see, sarcasm)

You make a good point regarding travel within Europe.  As a tourist a few years ago, my wife and I were all over the place in France and Belgium.  But I can see how, for a native, its not the same as going, say, from New Hampshire to Alabama.

So, you say that statement in Danish was fairly accurate?  I wasn't sure, and when  I tried to translate it back to English, it was not what I started with.

Email and other forms of written communication via the Internet are notorious for misinterpreting the intent of people.  That and anonymity make it far to easy to get critical with total strangers.  Sarcastic intent becomes insult, humor becomes offense.  There aren't enought smiley face emoticons to cover the spectrum of human emotion.

He touched his wang. Intensely. The entire time. I had nowhere to go. I was next to the window and the bus was full. I was watching a movie on my laptop and then my battery started to die and all I thought was NOOOOOOO!

Maybe he thought you were perdy :-*

I always thought wang scratching was a good move. Gets the girl interested. Then again...
