I'm new to the band's live shows and looking at the recent selists, I'm a little surprised by the lack of variety. It seems that they're starting every show with Victory Dance and Circuital. While I'm certainly looking forward to hearing those two songs, I feel like someone has already revealed my Christmas presents. Is this common for the band to deliver very similar setlists for all shows of a particular tour?

short answer, yes this is normal since at least Z. ask the older vets tho, this style might be older than that for them. album tours always open with the first song of the album they're promoting. Wordless in 05, Evil Urges in 08, Victory Dance/Circuital 2011.
luckily they've finally broken the perma-segue between smokin' from shootin->runthru->touch pt. 2. that's step one. step two is convincing them it's more entertaining if they play circuital later in the set or maybe even first. It's a fucking long ass, fairly mellowly rockin song.
I've gotta give them credit for the songs currently being busted out tho, each one has been a quality choice rarity. old september blues, the bear, where to begin. plus, lay low, dancefloors and steam engine are in heavy rotation right now and those always rip.

Right. Their new songs will pretty much stay in the same spot for the tour...especially the openers. Jim said in an interview he loved the space/sound that exists between Victory Dance and Circuital...I couldn't agree more. They're great openers. They will keep certain "fan favorites," if you will, such as Golden, Gideon, Wordless, TMP2, and a few others, which makes space for only a few changes and if they keep placing these empty slots with classics such as The Bear, O (which they played last night apparently), Where to Begin then I honestly don't understand how anyone can find complaints with these setlists or question their methods.
I know they don't read these boards, but sometimes I feel they do and they answer our questions a lot through their live shows. We all wondered after T5 if any of their beloved gems would ever get back into rotation and it looks like they're doing just that and I'm happy dappy about it. Each show will now have it's own bit of magic for the crowd since we won't know what those songs will be...and everyone will get a great performance.
Best band in the world.

Not gonna lie, I was worried this tour was going to be pretty samey, the songs theyve been pulling out though have been phenominal. I don't expect it to stop, I think we're going to see a lot more songs getting played, and that's pretty awesome. Just let masterplan be played at merriweather or philly please...
Remember folks, they are showcasing their latest album. They are promoting it. This is the "Circuital" tour. Expect to hear 90% of the album every show. It's a "show" - it's planned, it's mastered and it's well thought out. They put songs in certain order because it has a certain effect...post Circuital I bet you can expect to see a lot more variety, but now, no way.
Also remember who the band members are now compared to who they were in 2002. Those aren't Carl's and Bo's songs...they're Jims. If I was in a band, I would prefer to play the songs I contributed to...just sayin'.

"We have 10 more songs to throw into our lengthening show," says drummer Patrick Hallahan, referring to MMJ's new LP, Circuital. "It turns out that they play well with others." After revisiting their back catalog during a New York run last year, the Kentucky rockers are also stoked about bringing some of their earliest tunes back into rotation. Adds Hallahan, "We're going to start having more fun with the set list."

thye're playing some gems everynight. I'd like to maybe see a little more variety as far as song order goes but i would not complain about what we're getting now.
Hopefully when they circle back on a second leg they'll be "experimenting" more, as Patrick suggests in that RS quote

Er... the "through August 21st" is RS's reference to their current tour schedule. This little snippet came from a portion of RS's summer double-issue noting what bands are touring this summer. I wouldn't read anything into anything except Patrick's quotes, which suggest (and I believe are being realized) that they're dusting off some older, more rare tunes along with most of Circuital for the current run. I don't think there's much more between the lines than that.

You would do that? Thanks so much. Really, that's too kind of you.
Seriously though, I am not displeased whatsoever with the song selection. I know that this tour is supporting Circuital and there would be a heavy emphasis on those tunes. And the fillers have been top notch selections. I'm just surprised that so many of the songs are played in the same spot on the setlist each night. One of the things that I love so much about live music is not knowing what's next. The anticipation and the excitement felt in the time between one song ending and the next one beginning. Maybe this here internet is to blame. The fact that I can get instant access to the setlists for shows is what started this whole thought.
Here's to hoping they get a little crazy and play the setlist in reverse order on Aug 14.

What bands play mutually exclusive setlists every night on tour?
Until they do a "we're touring because its fun tour" they're doing something that is designed to promote a product.
I don't care if the songs are the same, but if I gotta complain, I'd like some of the new ones to expand.

well i hate to say this but panic does....just saying
Yeah, Yeah we get the whole "they are promoting their new album" reasoning. So they play roughly 23/24 songs a night and 8 or 9 from the new LP. That means you've got 15 songs to change up. And if you keep a couple (OBH, Gideon, Wordless, etc) that leaves you 10-12 to switch out every show. Right now they are throwing us 1 or 2 "oldies" every show and all the rest are the same songs, only jumbled a bit.
FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY AND GOOD PLEASE TAKE "SMOKING FROM SHOOTING" OFF THE SETLIST!
Sheesh, talk about wearing a song out.
i want to hear/see this again. underrated song on EU, imo.

I was just reliving some past experiences trying to cure a serious case of Jacketitis (Birmingham '10, Jazz Fest...), and I fully re-realized the forgotten power of the eminence intro face slammer.
Eminence Front>Victory Dance would be a sure fire cookie-loser....even though I think this intro gem won't see the light of an MMJ show again, it was so very epic :'( (we need an emoticon holding up a beer with the smile turned upside down)
eminence front > OBH was the best opener I've ever seen ever at any show

I know that they know how to play more than 30 songs. In fact I have personaly seen them play 'em (New Years Run, Okonokos and Bonnaroo). Are they trying to win new fans over so they only play songs from Z, EU and selected songs from ISM, At Daw and TTTF? songs in which they consider user friendly? Or do they not like playing those other songs? Don't they know it was mostly their other songs that have won over so many of us obsessed fans?
What ever happened to the hair ripping "The Dark"? The show stopping It's About Twilight Now? The country lovers how down "Lowdown"? The intense "Stangulation?" My favorite rocker "Honest Man"?!?! X-Mas Curtin? Sooner? O Is The One That's Real? Easy Morning Rebel? Just One Thing? They Ran? Covers?
Radiohead, have 59 songs they as a band have learned to play live and those are the 59 songs they select from before they walk onto stage. What they will do is try to play the songs that fit the fans, the setting, the sound of the venue and what they are feeling at that moment. Some nights they play Creep. Some nights they dont. Some nights Yorke will play acoustic. Some nights it's all fuckin' rockers. Granted they are promoting "In Rainbows right now...so right now they mostly, but not always will play "15 step" "Recokoner" or "House of Cards". But as for previous material - it's all up for grab.
So why not MMJ do they same - to keep us fans truely interested!! to keep us on our toes? dp oy so you make us want to go to more shows so we can wintness moments we have yet to experience. For example - a randown Into the Woods acoustic or set closing "It's about Twilight"?
Plus wouldn't you think they would have more fun playing new songs every night?
Just sayin....

In addition to promoting "Circuital", we have to remember that MMJ is catering to fans who may be seeing them for their first time ever or for the first time on this tour. As such, they're going to play their "hits" or songs they think will resonate to the crowd. This isn't some hobby for them; it's their livelihood.
The mere act that they're playing some classics like "The Bear", "Honest Man", and "Dancefloors" is a nod to the long-time fans, and we should be pleased to hear them. Not every band in the world would make efforts to include 1 or 2 less unknown songs in their shows.
Like most fans, I would like to see more variety, but at the same time I fully understand why they tend to play the same songs.
