Title: Circuital track rankings
Post by: MMJ_fanatic on Jun 28, 2011, 04:20 PM
I know this has been done for other discs--show us your hierarchies!  After a number of spins this is how the albom lays out for me enjoyment-wise:

1)  Victory Dance (really dig the native feel)

2) First Light--fuzzy groovy rocker

3) Circuital--totally grown all over me

4) You Wanna Freak Out

5) Movin' Away--gorgeous pedal steel

6) Slow, Slow Tune--another grower (love the guitar when it breaks in)

7) Outta My System

8 ) Wonderful

9) The Day Is Coming (close to tied w/#8)

10) Holidn on to Black Metal

1. Circuital
2. You Wanna Freak Out
3. Slow Slow Tune
4. Victory Dance
5. Movin Away
6. First Light
7. Wonderful
8. Out of My System
9. Day Is Coming
10. Black Metal

(EDIT: after listening to my unwarped slimers for the first time, I feel wrong ranking individual tracks. If I were to perform a statistical test comparing my liking of each tune, no significant results would be obtained. Sorry guys  :embarassed: This album has grown on me so much since May that it has become a 45 minute mind melting listening experience every time.)

This order will change perpetually over the next........decade. Live- Victory Dance, Circuital, YWFO, and Slow Tune are my favs (especially with that new-ish intro!).

I think we can all agree regardless of our lists MMJ has an uncanny ability to make great music. While some songs may not be our particular style we can't ignore they are usually well written and genuinely unique and great in there own way. That being said...

1.You Wanna Freak Out
2. First Light
3. Day is Coming
4. Wonderful
5. Black Metal
6. Victory Dance
7. Outta My System
8. Circuital
9. Slow Slow Tune
10. Movin Away

Again all are good. I love Movin Away and Slow. It really speaks to how great these guys are.

Is there an Evil Urges thread similar to this?

Here's what all the MMJ aficionados on http://gorankem.com (http://gorankem.com) think about their top ten all time MMJ songs (ranked by over 40 people from their entire catalog):

                              1) One Big Holiday
                              2) I'm Amazed
                              3) Evil Urges
                              4) Wordless Chorus
                              5) Off the Record
                              6) Highly Suspicious
                              7) Golden
                              8) Run Thru
                              9) Librarian
                            10) Touch Me I'm Going to Scream pt. 2

Wish the It Still Moves tracks were higher up but the best part is that if you disagree with the rankings you can submit your own, (up to 20 songs). I deifnitely did and got Golden and Run Thru moved up.

There's no way Haslem is 2 or top 5 for that matter - I mean I could see him at 7 tops.  And the Alaskan assassin at 6?  He's no lower than 3 according to most experts.

In all seriousness, I LOVE Outta My System.  It's been stuck in my head for about 50% of the time since I first heard it. :o

I know it's simple and kinda kitche, but it really works for me.  I've always thought that Jim's lyrics are better when he's mysterious and puzzling instead of direct and anthemic, but this is the exception to the rule!  This song is so damn catchy and has a theme to which we can all relate (ok, I never stole a car but...)

Anyways I just had to give this song some love since nobody else is.  It crescendos particularly well live, and reminds me of a good Tom Petty jam or something.  Also, while on the subject, You Wanna Freak out is probably at the bottom of my list.  I love that there's a big variety in everyone's favourite songs on this record, MMJ always throws out a little something for everyone!  Just had to get that rant out of my system!

I guess its my turn, though it changes constantly.  These are most informed by recent live performances, which have made listening to the album more pleasurable.

1. Slow Slow Tune
2. Day is Coming
3. Circuital
4. Wonderful
5. Victory Dance
6. Outta My System
7. Movin Away
8. Black Metal
9. First Light
10. Freak Out

Immediately upon completing this list, I want to redo it, but shall resist.

Really amazing how there is no pattern here.  To each his own and it's all good!  I've got The Day is Coming and HOTBM in the front and Movin Away and First Light at the end...but others have it completely opposite.  And that works, too!

First Light at the end
first light rocks.

even entertainment weekly likes it....not that entertainment weekly matters.

i got a free subsciption, this week's issue has a "summer playlist" of "hot-weather jams."

my morning jacket - first light

to fully experience this blissed-out rock epic, listen to the golden blasts of horns and guitars at an outdoor show.  one warning: its psychedelic visions might land you in the chill-out tent.

I really love First Light, so I was surprised it ended up 9th on my first crack at this ranking.

6. Circuital
7. Wonderful
8. Movin Away
9. HOTBM
10. First Light

I LOVE 1-8 on my list. 9 is okay. 10 I don't like.

my turn I guess - continuing the trend of no set pattern compared to others.   Most notable difference is that I'm surprised many rank day is coming so highly

circuital
victory dance
Wanna Freak Out
First Light
wonderful
outta my system
Slow Slow Tune
HOTBM
Movin Away
day is coming

I agree that Outta My System is a much better song live than on the album and has been moving up my rankings - slow builder aka smokin from shootin

I think its one of only 2 songs by them if they play live I don't feel bad leaving to go to the rest room.

Constantly.  I was not a fan of Slow Slow Tune; now its top 3.  I loved Wonderful going in, but its overproduced.  I prefer the solo Yim versions of old.  I always liked First Light, though the haters have tested my resolve.

Dudes Slow Slow Tune goes on first every time I play the record. It's probably the most chilled mmj song imo. I could drive with the windows down or drink some cold beer anytime to Slow Slow Tune.
