he's gone spiritual. great. thanks LSD.
soul music, R&B, jazz, rock, folk, funk are all in the same realm structurally. he's missing the point about being enlightened if he's actively searching for it. he needs to read some tao philosophy or something and center himself because he's starting to sound like he's losing his mind.
Ahhh come on, that seems like sensationalism. First of all, this was a tiny article for an upcoming show that selected a few quotes from a greater conversation. Jim James still loves rock music (jesus, look how hard he rocks out) he is just expanding his musical taste. He is allowed to listen to other music haha

this isn't the first time he's said he's sick of rock, or the rock type sound.
Whatever, Pete Townsend said he was researching child porn when he was really just whacking off. Jim's on his way to writing the next Tommy.
Oh my, it sounds a little like a far-ish stretch here... doesn't really quote him saying he's "not into" rock anymore, and contextually doesn't seem to really be aiming in that direction, other than him acknowledging that a large body of rock music can be classified as dark sounding or written as an outlet for pain.... which is, well...true.
But as a matter of fact, it does appear to quote him in saying rock music is beautiful and serves a purpose! (That being the other part of the "body" of rock music... that which isn't about pain or darkness, or that which is about transforming those things.) There is a lot of that out there too. But it appears he's enjoying some more upbeat ventures, whatever they may be...
So yeah, I don't really know where this thread is goin', but I just read the article and felt a need to throw down. So now what, is the next album going to be a shade of George Harrison's solo venture and subsequent creation of his "Chant and Be Happy" album, featuring all songs as Hindi mantras??? 3 cheers if it is! It's not likely though, I guess.... it'll probably be a rock album.......... 8)

but that's exactly the point. what's he even talking about? not all rock music is dark, it's a bad generalization on his part I don't usually criticize him.
and woodnymph, you make good points. to me jim has been getting more and more out there. a little bird told me they were talking to the dbt's after a show on their bus and got into a conversation with them about MMJ. apparently my morning jacket was at a truckers show and got into a conversation with the band, the member of the band my friend talked to said after jim was done talking they couldn't understand what he was talking about, he's just too far out there to understand these days. from what the little bird tells me, the truckers and mmj have been friends for years so it was an odd exchange. that's a bad sign. if he goes all syd barrett or something on us I'll be bummed. it could be bullshit. we don't know Jim personally, nor can we read his mind.

I like Circuital, but it does NOT rock. They will always rock in concert, but what I got out of this article was he is not into creating rock at this time. I hope it is not permanent.

The weird thing about this is MMJ and DBT were both discovered by me at the same time, and in less than a year they became by far my 2 favorite bands, without me knowing any connection. I ain't no impressionable kid, my 50th is Tuesday.

How much real RNR was in Circuital? Watch Okonokos. I like Evil urges variations, and Circuital is very listenable, but this article implies a future direction that is different than what they clearly can be, THE MOST BADDASS ROCK BAND ON THE PLANET!
Relax. It is all good man. MMJ is great because of their varied influences.

Although I can generally agree with you, the term "It's all good" is a pet peeve of mine. It is like if you are at a buffet and something taste bad, someone will say, "It's all good", when it clearly is not as good as it could be.
Are all of you really going to say you've never been like "you know what, rock is dead to me for a little bit right now, but I'm really loving __________". And I'm not talking about that phase in 1999 when you really liked going to Raves.
You never said, I'm on a blues kick, or I'm on a Jazz kick, or I'm really liking a lot of electronic music? Hell, look at Warren Hayne's new album...that's not all that "traditional" rock and rollish. Not in a way you'd expect from Warren, at least.

It is what it is
Isn't pretty much everything "what it is"? I think someone could use that saying at least 50 times a day and no one would call bullshit, they'd just nod and agree. Yep, you're so right "it is what it is" You can't ever use that term and not get it right. I mean, I just really wish "it's not what it is" would catch on.

no, just because he says it's beautiful and serves it's purpose automatically tells me he thinks of that genre as a lower genre for sure now. "so much of it" is about pain and darkness I highly disagree with, look at Phish, they're not really about darkness. look at Ween they're not really dark. Hendrix wasn't that dark at all. I think he's dissing rock too hardcore, rock is what made them famous and now he's almost dilberately trying to avoid so he's not cornholed. he should embrace the strengths of the band and not focus on highlighting the weaknesses (pedal steel over kill after the last too albums). it's my opinion I don't anybody in this conversation can claim to be right.

Not dark at all? I suggest you listen to the album Electric Ladyland. Or maybe Machine Gun from Band of Gypsies. Do I really need to list all the dark Hendrix music?

Wayne Brady.... is that you?
this is a really bizarre conversation you all are having, but I can completely see Jim becoming a solo artist making really weird music, maybe experimental or pop or something. but, he's written 6 great albums and then some so far, so its cool.

A KENTUCKY CONVERSATION - Part 6 (http://vimeo.com/24146958)
Man, I love watching Wendell Berry laughing as JJ talks about giving "TV prescriptions".
Huge Wendell Berry fan here. I have been working this one for a couple of years now:
DO NOT BE ASHAMED
by Wendell Berry
You will be walking some night
in the comfortable dark of your yard
and suddenly a great light will shine
round about you, and behind you
will be a wall you never saw before.
It will be clear to you suddenly
that you were about to escape,
and that you are guilty: you misread
the complex instructions, you are not
a member, you lost your card
or never had one. And you will know
that they have been there all along,
their eyes on your letters and books,
their hands in your pockets,
their ears wired to your bed.
Though you have done nothing shameful,
they will want you to be ashamed.
They will want you to kneel and weep
and say you should have been like them.
And once you say you are ashamed,
reading the page they hold out to you,
then such light as you have made
in your history will leave you.
They will no longer need to pursue you.
You will pursue them, begging forgiveness.
They will not forgive you.
There is no power against them.
It is only candor that is aloof from them,
only an inward clarity, unashamed,
that they cannot reach. Be ready.
When their light has picked you out
and their questions are asked, say to them:
"I am not ashamed." A sure horizon
will come around you. The heron will begin
his evening flight from the hilltop.
Is he the one that called Jim a young old foggie at the end. That clip was great thanks for posting. The last guy had some really amazing stuff to say as well. Treating the soil as a commodity etc.
MMJ is great for their various influences, think about how far they have come since TTF? And I enjoy each album exactly the same. But to say Circuital does not rock is not entirely true, the title track is in essence a true rock song, HOTMB is a jam, and Slow Slow I feel is definitely rock and roll. And with what Jim says about rock music being depressing, think about what he did on Z, Dondante and Wonderful Man are two of everyone's favorite songs, and those are deeply emotional and depressing for him and they are for sure rock and roll, it doesn't mean he can't rock, maybe he just wants to be more upbeat and positive with his song writing and he may feel he can't accomplish that with pure rock and roll, but he can do it by mixing in variations of rock and soul and R&B, which i think we all love... Even Highly Suspicious (which I think is the perfect example of these mixtures)...
Dude...you guys sound like a bunch of people who have never done drugs before. Jim is out there. That's for sure - but in a harmless beautiful way. Fuck, if Jim James were cult leader, I would join! He has beautiful insights to this complicated world - he see's it as dream, as a playground, as something so unique that it captivates him completely. But that's the coolest part about it - the music is far out yet so grounded...what do you guys want...young, drunk college rock? I don't!!! more psych pop soul please. Smoke more weed. Do some E at Red Rocks. Eat a cap or two. Take a hit. You'll see..

You're way off. Jim is on a consiousness trip, not an "unconciousness" trip. He addresses the energy of the crowd and oneness over and over and over again, not as some adolescent on a drug bender, but as someone who is moving past that into something deeper and more meaningful.
The key to life, IMO, is to find these doorways and pathways to higher consiousness using your mind and connections to other's souls. Sitting by a river achieving bliss, not "achieving bliss" by X'ing balls at a Phish show.
Jim would tell you to form a self cult; be your own leader.
^
Great post and spot on. Look at the lyrics for Steam Engine. "Take your money and your drugs". I think Jim means you do not need money, material things or drugs to achieve happiness or to reach a higher plane of consciousness. Find beauty and meaning in the natural world and by making meaningful connections with others. "Take him to go diving in red patoka sea, boar and moving trees, the fact that my hearts beating is all the proof you need". All these lines are saying, especially the last one, that we are alive and together and the world itself is full of enough beauty and interesting things that you dont need drugs or money to be content.
Sorry this turned into a Steam Engine analysis, but I think that song really pertains to the way this conversation has turned. Not saying drugs aren't fun and that money isn't useful, but sometimes we lose sight and place to much importance on these things. That's my two cents.

*too much

Very well said! Jim is on a path to finding peace and beauty in all things. He is an ever evolving being who has a beautiful soul and is being transformed by spiritual enlightenment, not drug usage. And to take that snippet of an article and completely write it off as if MMJ was no longer to do anything remotely similar to rock going forward is a complete misinterprutation of his words. Their music, from Tennessee Fire to Circuital, has changed so much in sound since beginning to the present that it illustrates the journey they are embarking on as a band. I personally find it refreshing that they are willing to keep persuiting something new and fresh. Just my opinion I guess but I like the direction they are going. They will still put together some great rock songs in their future recordings but the beauty of that is that each record isn't purely confined to one sound, one genre.
i know these are all insights and assumtions, but its hilarious how much this board (myself included) thinks they know jim like their his best friend.

i have to fly in a plane, so you provide it
hey tracy not everybody is trying to "achieve bliss" by X'ing balls at a Phish show. I go there for the h3tty patchwork.
Im sorry...I'm not sayin Jim is on drugs. in fact - i'm sure that ship for him, as it has for me, has long sailed...except weed...i love that shit! I agree - Jim is moving past all of that shit. I mean, he doesn't even drink beer on stage anymore - he drinks Gatorade! Pat still puts em down though! But drugs help people escape comfort zones. it lets people experience new things, see new lights, feel new emotions. I'm not promoting drug use at all...I don't think it's healthy for anyone to binge on any kind of drug, alcohol included. But drugs do open you up...I'm simply suggesting, if you're having trouble falling in love with the "new Jim"...take some drugs. it might help. :D :D :D

I think we all need to finally just come to terms with the fact that jim james is now a full fledged mormon. It's sad, but true. he tweeted about it not to long ago.
