Title: I want something new! Or old!
Post by: Tracy 2112 on Jul 11, 2011, 09:39 AM
I want to buy a cd and be BLOWN AWAY! Seriously. I haven't been too moved by any new music lately -and by "new", it could be something old that I just haven't heard before. Like the "new" Neil Young , A Treasure; will it blow me away?

So give me your suggestions. Last time I did this BOS recommended Twilight Singers POWDER BURNS which scored and then K got me 2x with Constantines.

I want to be moved! Cover to cover!

Don't know if you caught this last time I posted it.  Its not gonna blow the doors off, but Arthur Alexander is an under-appreciated artist who was experiencing a comeback when he died.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Alexander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Alexander)

He's the only songwriter covered by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.

Have you gone back in time with the Twilight Singers yet?  Blackberry Belle might just be the finest piece of American music ever recorded.

What Soup said.

Look into Pokey LaFarge and the South City 3. New album is streaming on NPR right now. It's new but they sound straight out of the 1930's. If you are in a new wave mood and haven't listened to Joe Jackson (outside of the hits) try his debut Look Sharp!. Still a great album and cover. All I can think of on a heat destroyed brain right now.

How about Superchunk?  That could be something old and new.  They're pretty old (just like you) and they put out a new album last year that I really love - Majesty Shredding.  Not sure if you were ever a Superchunk guy though.

I'm in the same boat. Though I'm far younger, I haven't heard something that I've been absolutely obsessed with since I first got into MMJ. I wanna hear something that will become a new favorite band. There have been plenty of great records coming out in the past couple years, but nothing that holds me for a long time. I think I'll check out twilight singers...

Velvet Underground. I know it is a cliche recommendation, but they have a gem that is kind of obscure. It is a very low-fi double live album called "1969". Sounds like it is recorded by a soup can, but considering it was recorded during the summer of Woodstock and guitar solos, you might be surprised to hear the blueprint for the 80's come through clear as a bell. It was my first exposure to VU about 30 years ago, and it eclipses everything else I have ever heard from them. I would guess R.E.M. and Talking Heads would agree. The first time I heard that Sun kil Moon record I had a 103 degree temperature and I was laid on on someonelse bed and they put this on in the other room and I melted into it and when I awoke in a pile of sweat the only thing I cared about was finding out who I had been listening to.  Penny is correct, it grows and grows on you.  Some of the guitar tones on this album make me wonder from time to time if isn't THE best record ever made.....and then the vocals of course

That's a great one -- hell, they're all good. Songs For a Blue Guitar is probably my favorite, some interesting covers on there.

I'm sure you've heard Secret Machines, right? They blew me away when I first heard Now Here Is Nowhere, and it still blows me away. School of Seven Bells is also beautiful stuff.

OK, so I went with the SKM-GOTGH. I have to say I was not impressed at first, but trusting you people with my life, I was patient and let it "grow on me". And it had, and it did, and it is amazing. Thank you   :)

Also, special thanks to Mikey who suggested last years Teenage Fan Club release. Got it and immediately got it.

And then a chicken sent me some Temptations and Chris Bell...   :)

Got Dawes via strong recommendations on the 2011 music thread. meh   :-\
My wife and I were listening to it on our way out of town and she eventually grabbed the i-pod and said, "If we're going to listen to the Avett Brothers then we should listen to the Avett Brothers"; so we did.

Blitzen Trapper - American Goldwing it's not out until September 13th- but there are a lot of videos on youtube (if you're not into torrenting). Probably going to be my number one of the year.

It has a Laurel Canyon early seventies feel to it with great lyrics. If you're into that kind of thing  ;)

I too love Blitzen Trapper

So if you haven't checked them out, I say listen to some Rural Alberta Advantage.  They have two great albums out.  I know you're a fan of Neutral Milk Hotel and they are compared ad nauseum to Jeff Mangum, or at least in some reviews I've read including a terrible one by COS.  Regardless, I enjoy them quite a bit.

Here are two off of Hometowns:

I know, I know.  I gush about them enough already.  Anywho, some instrumental prog/metal anyone?  Let's just say loosely, they're like Rush without vocals.  Nerdtastic.  All three of their albums are bad ass!

GLACIAL PLANET - SCALE THE SUMMIT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNdRkIR8QU0#)

Scale the Summit - Whales (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQKIuy6vsSU#)

I've just ordered Sun Kil Moon, Blitzen Trapper, and Scale the Summit.

I'd also back up the love for Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere is a fine album.

May I also recommend Porcupine Tree?  In Absentia is a classic from 2003, 2007's Fear of a Blank Planet was grammy-nominated and the most recent album, The Incident, is also great.  A good taster would be the download of Atlanta from their online shop - a 2-hour gig with all the good ones!

Been hittin this album for about a month now and have to say it is my album of the year..........no need for any other entries.  I love all of their albums but this one imo is gonna be the one that really gets their name out there with all the rest that have been in a cave over the years and not heard them.  Start to finish American Goldwing is the stuff.

All you Sheepdogs fans should check out a few of the classic Canadian bands that heavily influenced the Rolling Stone darlings. The Sheepdogs have Canadian '70s mid-west rock in their soul:

The Sheepdogs - "I Don't Know": SXSW 2011 Showcasing Artist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4JR6aw_Uqo#ws)

Tracy probably already owns some of these albums/songs (notice the studio in video #2, "I Like to Rock" - the same as Rush used to record Moving Pictures and videos "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight"):

April Wine - Roller Official Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usWQOPTORn8#)

April Wine - I Like To Rock Official Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlcY_enzwmI#)

I think some hip band should ressurrect this great great song:

April Wine - Say Hello (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M48DitTJTw8#)

And, of course, the Stampeders, Chilliwack and of course, The Guess Who and BTO:

The Stampeders - Sweet City Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfqiOQA0iIk#ws)

Chilliwack (Fly At Night)...1977...Lyrics Provided Under Info: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nYvmm0Ofmc#)

The Guess Who- Running Back To Saskatoon / Share The Land (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLzRoeU6q5M#)

(No Randy Bachman in this incarnation; great live version though):

The Guess Who American Woman The Midnight Special (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_3yeQeBOAI#)

Bachman Turner Overdrive:

The Guess Who "Takin' Care Of Business" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNfpPKoTHZs#)

I saw them in concert around the time of Nature of the Beast; they played my hometown (Kingston, ON). It was one of my first concerts ever. Great show and a tremendously big stage with pyrotechnics.

I assume you hear those bands I mentioned when you listen to the Sheepdogs. Us old folks need to edumacate them youngsters.

I've just ordered Sun Kil Moon, Blitzen Trapper, and Scale the Summit.

SKL Ghosts of the Great Highway is a stunning album.  Cheers guys, another great recommendation from the board.

Yeah thanks guys.  I had only given a hard listen to Admiral Fells Promises was it?  I listened to Ghosts this morning and really liked what I heard though it was while eating and reading.  Will try again this week.

Also Mark, I would have recommended Monument or Carving Desert Canyons before the Collective.  The Collective has some brilliants songs such as Whales, but is overall much more restrained

That's good - I bought Canyons after reading a few reviews! Gonna give it a spin this weekend.

Excellent choice!  It has become my favorite and is a perfect blend of vision, lyricism, and technical wizardry.  Nobody does what they are doing.  Love 'em!

One of my favourite recent finds is Arbouretum's The Gathering. Kind of psych rock, give them a spin, see what you think Tracy...

Nice dB!  This was one of my choices for the forum album club.  Actually was hanging out with a real good friend last night that's known David Heumann for quite some time.  Going to see them a week from Tuesday.  Yeah they are like a drone/metal/psych/folk/rock outfit
