Someone posted an auction on eBay for a supposed demo tape from 1996. Curious what folks think about authenticity. I'm not interested in bidding, unless it stays low, but would love to hear it. Anyone with knowledge of this tape?
Note song titles: Evelyn is Not a Real Person, The Phone Went Dead, etc.

I noticed another post about this auction under "Other Music" from MMJNashvilleFan, a new member. I wonder if this is the guy selling the tape, trying to foment bidding.
No offense to MMJNashvilleFan if I'm wrong.
I don't have this, I want it. That's Jim's handwriting, so it's probably real. I'd heard Alabama Come Clean, but I can't put my finger on where I came across it. Looking into this...
I'll share if I win, so please don't outbid me people!
Okay, a little research shows that "Alabama Come Clean" is the name of the hidden track on Tennessee Fire. "Rid of You" is likely an early version of Just Because I Do but I can't guarantee it.

Also, from the same site, the following quote under "At Dawn"-
"Phone Went West" is listed as "Phone Went Dead" in the lyrics.

I concur. I want someone who deserves to have this tape, and aMD qualifies. I'm a newbie and appreciate the longtimers for all they do here and elsewhere.

Would that be the "Untitled Instrumental" (2:42) on my digital copy of Tennessee Fire?

Something about that tune reminds me of something else. I wonder if they recycled the melody in a later song. Does anyone else recognize it?
I just renamed the track. I love shit like this.
(I have a copy of the original demo tape for the band Boston, which was titled "We Found it in the Trashcan, honest!". Apparently, it was mistakenly tossed in the trash but recovered. My boss at the time, working at a camera store, got a copy from Tom Scholz when he did some portrait photography. Its great, with alternate lyrics to a bunch of classic Boston tunes. I should get it onto the computer.)

That is pretty nifty!
Good luck, aMD!

Apparently, the Boston demo tape, which I got in 1987 second generation from Tommy Scholz himself, is now a fairly popular bootleg in the Boston fan community. I'm currently running a slow torrent download of it and will post a link soon as I can.
QuoteDamn, so I shouldn't bid!?!!!!
I'll pm you.
My bid is in...at ONE MILLION DOLLARS. I'll stop at nothing to get my hands on this treasure.
Don't worry, I'll dub ya'll some XL-IIs.
QuoteDamn, so I shouldn't bid!?!!!!
Dude, if you want to bid, you should. If you win, we hope you'd share. Don't let a message board tell you what to do.

Go to the link below for the Boston demo, "We Found It In The Trashcan, Honest," in FLAC and MP3 w/artwork and liner notes. I'll copy this post in OTHER MUSIC, too. Check out the interesting similarities and differences on 6 classic Boston tunes.

Whatevs is right. I know it's you who came back with a bid of $1,000,001. I give up. It's yours. >:( ;D

Agreed. As long as that someone is me. ;)
I promise I will share. Seniority around here may not stake my claim to this alone, but people around here know that I'm trustworthy and willing to share.
i'd have been a bit skeptical myself but the folks on here really know their shit. how exciting! hopefully the demo will go to a true fan... and then it'd be very cool if that true fan did share it with us.
good luck!

Nice, Dylan. I am sure that you will let us know when you get it...

Holy crap! Some poor shmuck is shelling out $500+ for a cassette that may be unplayable?!? YIKES! I would have given to charity 1st and made a difference in the community...
EDIT--I see there was team effort (in the preceding post). I guess if there were enough people involved the cost may be more acceptable. But still 500--really?

Wow! I'm blown away by the closing price, but happy it stayed in the family. I know the eBay experience too well. Dylan, email me an address and I'll chip in some $$$.
Congrats to Dylan and friends and may a vat of Crisco fall face down upon the bid price spiker involved here.
Wow...5-hundy for that, eh? aMD, I will never doubt your MMJ-fandom. At least its in good hands. That said, I would be interested to know who this fool is who had it in the first place and decided on selling it all of a sudden?! I think Johnny Quaid is pissed he quit the band before they made it big
...how exactly does someone get a cassette in a digital format though???
MMJFanatic - I missed you too. But seriously, it's not that big a of price tag when you consider that, if this thing is real and playable, it's a one of kind. Some of the rare MMJ vinyl goes for over 100 bucks on ebay routinely and when I say rare I mean there's 1000 printed not just 1. This is ultra-rare and likely contains tracks we've never heard. Plus, it was a team effort, there were 6 others chipping in anywhere from 5 to 100 bucks, so again I don't think it's that crazy. And anyway, I'm cool with someone thinking I'm crazy when it comes to MMJ fandom. :)
Headdy - I have a digital interface I use for recording music on my macbook. It has RCA inputs so I just need to find someone with a cassette player with RCA outputs (and I already have) and I can record it on garageband. And the guy claims he was an intern at Sony when it was submitted and he's been holding onto it waiting for the right time to sell. Looks like he found it.
Ruckus - yeah, I'm not too happy with whoever bid 500 at the last minute, but I got the last laugh.
aMD, enjoy this man, if its real its going to be so awesome for you to be able to listen. Can't wait to see what you think! your dedication is an inspiration!
Damn dude...that will be worth something one day. Hopefully the 6 of you don't take each other to court in 2036 over this tape.
QuoteDamn dude...that will be worth something one day. Hopefully the 6 of you don't take each other to court in 2036 over this tape.
Yeah, maybe I should print out the correspondence with those people for record keeping. Most people didn't want "ownership" just a chance to hear it and know it'll be in good hands. And we don't plan on selling it, just archiving it and sharing it if that's cool with the band. Once I get the tape and confirm it's real I'll contact management or the band to see what I can do with it on that front.

that's rad you scored this shit. will this be the earliest known jacket recording if its legit? if the guy sold you something bunk his knees are as good as broken.
I'm late to this party, but I'm happy to chip in too if you want to lower your total cost. PM me if you're still taking offers.

Thats awesome that you guys scored this!
Nice work, fans.
A price tag such as this is proof further evidence of mmj's lasting impression on the music industry. I'd imagine these gems will grow in rarity and worth as mmj continues writing their place in music history.
Nice job friends-way to pull together! :)
I want.
Dylan do you have a little shrine of MMJ stuff in your house somewhere? I can picture it looking similar to those shrines buddists have mixed with christian elements since this is the USA and christ likes to lay his hands upon thee, unless your jewish. then in that case my bad.

Nice going aMD. :)
non-believers... I'm not going to word for word compare JJ to Bob Dylan, but can you imagine getting you hands on a Dylan demo that he shopped out 3 years before he even released a record...
this band has and will continue to leave their mark on history and I don't have to tell most of you that.
let me know when she arrives D!
congrats & hooray aMD & friends! it's great to see that this tape is heading to you for safe keeping.
bummer about the last minute hijinx w/ the bidding but thanks for seeing it through. i admire your dedication & would like to kick in a little $ in appreciation.
Well, it's real! We're still trying to get it converted digitally and then I'll contact management and see what's up.

In the summer of 2007 a bunch of us here got together for the weekend at a campground in Kentucky to eat, drink and celebrate all things mmj. We dubbed it "Jacketfest" It was a lot of fun. "Thats what she said."

It's an early version of "I Just Wanted to Say"
Just catching up with this thread - great work, Dylan and co. If you can PM me a paypal account, I'd be happy to chip in a little towards the cost (no international custody rights required!).
I really hope management give the go ahead to get this up.
just read this whole page. You're a fuckin' bad ass! Slightly crazy, but the most awesome of ways. Big ups Dylan - treasure that for ever.
oh, by the way, Congrats Dylan, and I guess Kory while were on it ;)

I recognize the cover. There was a place in New Haven, CT called Rhymes Records that used to sell boots with those covers. We used to go there weekly and their covers were always those photocopied photos and track listings. Oh the good old days of tapes and tape trading.
i NEED to hear this. I wish I stumbled upon this thread earlier, I would have contributed to the purchase fund.
Woooie, just caught this thread myself...
Hefty price for a hefty item but well worth it.
Sooo...how does it sound? I'm not asking for a digital copy, but a review of what we're working with here would be nice! ;D
Most importantly to me, how's the Evelyn?
Thanks for this!
As the oldest know Jacket recordings...I don't think this one will just fall out of the sky folks.
Anything ever happen with this?
I would throw some money on this situation. What's it going to take? Anyone with any knowledge, PM me please.
