What's with the pink tape on Jim's red Gretsch? It always catches my eye, I figure someone here might know what the deal is...
I think Jim has a sense of humor and it just says "Hi"
definitely for laughs with the novelty "Hi" thrown in there, but i do believe it has some practical use, in that it makes it so the toggle switch for different pickup settings does not move when yim is in full swing rocking the shit outta "you wanna freak out" for example.
it looks as if he has a pretty sophisticated pickup and tone knobs custom built into the bottom of that Gretsch, so the stock one is just stabilized.
Actually that control panel is stock on the Gretsch Super Axe. Its to control the on-board effects (phase, compression, and sustain). And that tape is to keep the toggle in position, and probably to say hi. However, that Bigsby Vibrato is not stock and was added on at some point.
You can buy your very own here:

I'm not selling this by the way so I'm not spammin', just wanted to show a good example of the axe.
What prompt and well-informed responses! Thanks!
No problem, I'm a huge gear head. And I don't know this for sure but I doubt Jim uses the on-board effects on this guitar, considering they are probably inferior to the effects he uses on his pedal board. The wiring for the on-board effects are probably bypassed altogether and he just uses this axe for that Gretsch jangle on certain numbers.
I don't know guitars too well, but she's a beaut!
While we're on guitars. Carl was playing this one on Conan the other night and I think its his new one. I've never seen him play it prior to that performance.

Duesenberg Double Cat
Carl loves Duesenbergs
He's had that at least since Evil Urges, he played it on Austin City Limits in 2008. True Beauty.
Boutique near my place stocks Duesenbergs, I often stroll in for a Wayne's World-esque sampling...
Your thinking about this one:

Duesenberg Starplayer
Carl calls it Doozy
Nope, he definitely plays the pointed one as well on Austin City Limits 2008.
Though both are sexy. :o
I'm trying to find a pic or video clip but no luck so far. I'm pretty sure he only played it during the track Evil Urges.
You are totally right, I stand corrected. I've been to a lot of shows and never saw it so I assumed it was new. Good eye.
Here's a shot from 2009...

S'all good just sharing in the guitar geekdom!
We should make this the official My Morning Jacket Gear thread.
Yeah it's true there isn't too much gearhead talk on this board... I also sometimes post on the Black Keys Fan Lounge forum and that's like 60% gear talk.
I can't keep up with most of it, I like guitars but I'm a pretty big noob gear-wise, my appreciation for certain models is mostly aesthetically-based. Perhaps you could further educate some of us... know much about their pedal rigs?
;) ;) ;)
This is a cool site that shows Carl's complete signal chain for each song on the Evil Urges recording.

Great resource if your trying to find certain sounds.
I don't know much about Jim's pedal board, but for a moment at the Hangout Fest one of the stage hands lifted his board up to do something and I caught a glimpse of this:

A great guitar reverb pedal which I also own, makes your bedroom sound like the Grand Canyon.
While on the subject of there gear. Ive been trying to find Jims 1999 ltd edition V for sale, looks like its pretty tough to even find pictures of one, let alone one for sale, Found this link awhile back but the dude already sold it. http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?1575764-Gibson-limited-edition-flying-V (http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?1575764-Gibson-limited-edition-flying-V)
You definitely don't see many in that color finish. The one that sold on HC is dead on. Put a mirror pickguard on it and it's good to go. It's possible that sometime down the line Gibson could make a Jim James signature model since most of his electrics are Gibsons outside of the red Gretsch.
Yea, he used to play a strat on a few tunes, and i dont know what his 12 string electric is.

Gear list at the end.
Here is a list of Tommy's studio basses.

That works too!
Gotta get Buster D to modify the subject. Thanks for the cool links. I'm no musician but find all of this quite interesting.
I think Buster had a question about Jim's board I wanted to respond to. If you watch the KCRW video there are some great shots of Jim's board. The pedals he uses, at least on this tour, from what I could see: 2x Boss RV5 (reverbs, probably uses two to stagger the settings for different songs), Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo Reverb, SiB Mr. Echo, Malekko Spring Chicken Reverb, and 3x Boss TU2 (Tuners, I know for a fact MMJ uses different tunings depending on the song they are playing so these are probably all set to different tunings. There were a couple of other pedals I just couldn't see so this list is not complete. Hope that answers some questions.

I'd like to hear an explanation on the TU2's. Not saying you're wrong, but it seems strange since those things will do any tuning without changing any settings. Maybe I need to get the owner's manual out.
Aside from capo moving what tunes are in different tunings?
I can't say anything for certain. As much as I would like to be Jim's guitar tech I'm just another fan. You can set the TU2 on standard tuning, half step drop, and whole step drop. I would guess that one could be set at standard, another at half step, and the third could just be a backup which makes since. I know on Victory Dance the tuning is dropped one half step without a capo. But on songs like Mageetah and Golden the guitars are tuned to E minor (EBEGBE) with a capo on the first fret. I could very well be wrong about the TU2's but I can't figure any other reason why he would have 3 of them on his board.

Great interview! I wondered how Carl got into Carr amps. Steve Carr might make some of the best sounding amps on the market today. Thanks for sharing.
