Title: Stage Collapse in Indy
Post by: MrB on Aug 13, 2011, 11:11 PM
Took my wife to see Sugarland. We left when we saw the storm coming, but others not so lucky! Five are now confirmed dead. What a terrible tragedy, could have happened anyplace/anywhere!
Be careful all ye concertgoers, and watch out for each other! Those temporary festival stages are not safe in windy conditions, so be cautious.

Same thing  happened at the ottawa  blues fest to Cheap Trick, just a few weeks after MMJ played the same stage there.

Really scary stuff.  Hearts with the victims and their families.

Unfortunately it seems that in the event of questionable weather at a festival, the risk is almost always taken.  I understand the motivations behind this risk as "the show must go on", but it's really horrifying to see this outcome.

weather risk or not, i would assume that the risk is excessive the moment you've got lightning in the background and there are a ton of people around the tallest objects in the area that just happen to be electrically charged and made of metal.

Sitting on metal bleachers in a severe thunderstorm didnt seem like a smart thing to do, so we left our seats about 30 seconds before the winds came. I didn't realize the stage collapsed until i heard other people talking about it. I seriously thought it was a tornado due to the amount of wind we felt so we high tailed it to the nearest building. My wife commented how surreal it was as we made our way thru the cows and chickens, while firetrucks raced thru the streets. The damn announcer said the band was coming out in a few minutes, which in hindsight was the biggest blunder of the night. 2 minutes later ' 4 people were dead.

I'm with you on that, e_wind..... rough.  That's really rough.  MrB I'm extremely glad you guys headed out of there when you did..... I just can't fathom any of that whole thing.... man.... those clouds look so sinister... my heart goes OUT to everyone.  Everyone involved, everyone who witnessed it..... just everyone... It's really hard to imagine what it would have been like...

Look at the clouds in the background, I would've been hightailing it out there, but it's easy to think something like this would never happen until it does.
