Plain and simple the best new band i've heard in years.
Thanks for that link magh33ta! I enjoyed that. I'm hoping that I'm able to get down to Birmingham on March 31 to see them play.
I'm a fan.
Have been since the first time I heard them.
They are incredible.

The show at Workplay in Bham sold out fast, but there's another one scheduled in Tuscaloosa on 3/23! Dexateens are playing with them too, and if you haven't heard them they're incredible. I'll be at that one
P.S. Sweet pic, Penny

Alabama Shakes - Full Performance (Live on KEXP) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hULIhLJ5RUM#ws)
besides their rock n soul sound which blows me away, I think I like the simplicity of their music almost most of all. addictive it is...
Thanks so much for posting that video! God, I love this band. Picked up my tickets today for their April tour, and this video is just what I need to carry over the excitement!
Completely agree on the simplicity factor too. Not that there's anything wrong with funky changes and spastic rhythms, but it's so refreshing to see a band just forget all of that and concentrate on doing the little things right. They get into a groove, throw soulful melodies on top and build and release tension -- and those principles are at the heart of all great music.
Man, I gotta get my ass to Burlington for this. Someone tell me it'll be worth the 5 hour round trip drive.

Just got around to watching the video from Conan. Lead singers voice is fantastic - reminds me of Mavis Staples. Had visions of a collab between her and Jim popping into my head immediately. Duet on that Booker T jam Jim sang on recently?

What's so neat about them is how unintentional this crazy rise was. I forgot the article I recently read about how Brittany Howard didn't know anything about music blogs or what Aquarium Drunkard was or something like that. I mean, well over 30,000 likes on FB and a national headlining tour without an official album released yet. Good for them. I support instant fame so long as they deserve it and they sure as hell seem to.

I clearly have no doubts they're going to blow me away.
See 'em if you can before they blow up. The show was amazing and the energy reminded me of seeing MMJ at the 40 Watt in 05. They were visibly moved hearing the crowd sing their songs along with them. Wow wow wow!

You're in for some good times, JY! Saw 'em last night in Birmingham and they really did kill it. The sound was perfect, bass was loud, and Brittney (Brittany?) could've been any number of the hallowed motown/soul voices from the past. She was so visibly into it.
I think it will be a great concert experience to share w/ your daughter too
P.S. I know you're a poster guy, so check out the posters. they're cool and only 10 bucks this tour.
It will be a great show for her. We had such a good time Friday night. The hometown crowd was so pumped for them and they did not disappoint. I mentioned in another thread that I met a man there whose son does their lights. He proudly told me how they had grown up practicing in his garage. This band was one of the most exciting I've seen live in awhile - so much energy.

I've really been enjoying Be Mine from this album. It may be my favorite.
"We'd been playing a lot of cover songs," Howard admits, "like James Brown, My Morning Jacket, Black Keys, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Otis Redding. At a certain point we decided to play only our own songs, because playing other people's songs won't get you anywhere. It made it harder to get gigs and we had to travel a lot farther as a result, but it was worth it. Besides we had all these songs that we'd written and wanted to play." - Brittany Howard

Got my vinyl today; damn shame I've got no turntable in my classroom, so the mp3 download will have to suffice. Sounds like a classic debut masterpiece, simple, sweet, soulful. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
That excellent live stream I posted yesterday is no longer active, but what a fanfuckintastic taste it was!
I'm so psyched for this weekend and think it will be an excellent first show for my Katherine at 10 years old. She missed meeting Jim at Newport in '10 but will join her 8 y.o. sister for this year's NFF and their first MMJ show!

My husband - the nonlover of music - was impressed last night when the band that I drug him to was on Letterman last night. I tried to tell him. I've just about given up. He's a lost cause at least where music is concerned.

A great show, perfect first concert for my daughter. Katherine had the best spot in the house- on the rail right up front and center! I think she was mighty tired by the end, but I know she had a great time.

Lee Bains III and The Glory Fires was fun but the mix was harsh; thank goodness for earplugs. When the Shakes came on, the earplugs got put away ('cept for Katherine's). Brittany's performance was phenomenal! Like Jim, she gets deep within herself when she sings and it takes the music to a higher place. Her band is tight and the keyboardist joining them on tour might have a permanent job, I'm thinking.
It was a short set by our standards, but perfect for having one of my girls rockin' past her bedtime. Quantity of songs low, but quality of performance very high!
After the show, glad Katherine missed the profanity-ladden drunk blonde next to us, we went around back to find Brittany enjoying a smoke (?). She was happy to hand the cig to a pal to talk with Katherine, take a couple of photos, and sign a poster the folks at Higher Ground gave away.
Huge props to Bruce from Albany. He was to our right on the rail all night and got both the poster and Brittany's set list for Katherine. A lot of nice people helped me make this a special night. It was great to hear so many remind my daughter that she has a "really cool dad."
Katherine and Bruce on the rail.

Also nice to see Joey Rogo and his pal Alex. We met in Burlington for a Jacket show on Joey's birthday in 2010 and have crossed paths at a number of shows since. Sorry I missed the world record setting cowbell event in Burlington earlier that afternoon, but great to see familiar, friendly faces.
One last note before I post some more pics. I mentioned to Brittany after the show how I had first heard of the Shakes on the MMJ forum. She thought I was saying I had heard about Alabama Shakes from My Morning Jacket themselves! She clearly worships MMJ, as she has stated in interviews. I think I clarified and mentioned she'd get her chance to share her love of MMJ when they're both playing Newport Folk Fest. She said, "We are? And MMJ are gonna be there? We were wondering if we could get tickets." I told her I think she might want to think about what song she wants to duet with Jim instead. I think I blew her mind!

Good stuff Johnny! Katherine looks like she very much enjoyed her first show! How old is she now? Just wondering because I've been contemplating breaking in my twins to a show who are currently 8.

Katherine is 10. I brought her sister, Maddie, to Newport in 2010, where she met Jim, when she was 6, but that ends in the early evening. This show ended before 11, but Katherine is usually in bed by 8:30-9. She was mighty tired towards the end, and I thought we might be leaving early, but the main set ended and the encore gave her a second wind. I suppose it depends on who, were, and when.
What great pictures! Katherine is a doll. I love that you had a father/daughter night with just her. She'll always remember this one. Also, love that you introduced her to Brittany. Thanks for sharing your night with us!
very cool jyyacc; the world needs more cool dads
Super duper cool dad 8) Your daughter seems wise and mature beyond her years.
There's no doubting that 10 yrs from now she'll look at that pic and think that her Dad is definitely one of the good ones...my dad listens to basically elevator jazz and took me to see Gallagher when I was 10...my dad is cool but not that cool.

So when are the Shakes doing SNL? #popcorn
cool story John and great pictures. Hope she remembers this one until she is your age!
Great show. Definitely met my high expectations. As fun as I've had in a while and SO glad I went. Part of me thought "wait till Newport" but I can't see them replicating the vibe we had going on Mon night in a small bar again. Brittany is great fun to watch. Zach (what is he called here, zeebz?) and I were the first two in the door and were directly in front of her the whole time. Couldn't stop watching her. Here is a pic below - we are on the far left (I had vacated the rail to let that photographer shoot pics. First time I had not worn a red sox or orioles hat to a concert in 20 years I think)
The song Always Alright is my early contender for Song of the Year, and it's not even on the album. It brought the house down and when they finished the place just would not stop cheering. The band clearly loves and is floored by the love they are getting from the crowd- Brittany said "what the fuck just happened?" with a huge grin. Fun to see them riding the wave of success and how could you not root for them?

I haven't been to as many shows as maybe some of you have, but that show was absolutely top three for me. the energy was just unreal!

My thoughts exactly. It's nice to see a bands reaction when they are first experiencing some widespread love for their tunes. It's rare to catch it, but when you do, it's pure magic.
I had also read from previous reviews that they play a cover of How Many More Times. As one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands, I definitely wanted to hear this. Unfortunately, they seem to be playing it less and less lately, as they have a full-set of their own stuff finally. I was worried I missed it and was praying to catch it before it got retired for good.
So, given my prime placement 18" from the setlist, I wrote on the back of my eticket "How Many More Times" and slapped it right on the bottom of the setlist before they finished their last song. When Brittany noticed it she did a double take and cracked a huge smile. Zach leaned over and said "well, at least we know she saw it" because her reaction was pretty special. So I was extra pumped when they busted it out to end the show.
I can't say 100% they wouldn't have played it anyway, but I'm pretty sure. They did a 3 song encore before that and it felt like they were pretty much done (Brittany put her shoes on, lol). Anyway, it's my story and I'm going to carry around the thought that she played it for me. They did play it in Philly but I'm not sure they have anywhere else recently.

Rampant badassery! :bath:
Niiiiice work! That's taking a song request to the next level. I always appreciate those who think outside the box. Hopefully they've got it on the printed setlist for tonight, otherwise, I'm gonna have to pull a mahg33ta.
Was just listening to the San Fran show with How Many More Times.

Yea that's a great story Mahg33ta, glad I was there in spirit too
Talked to my sister and her BF the next day who were at the show...They stated that the band looked generally surprised at the reaction and they mentioned quite a few times the level of volume of the audience after each song....Hopefully Beantown will serve as a special city for them in the yrs to come!

This photographer is a friend of mine. I had to be right near you guys....I was up front on the left about 2 rows back.
What a show. I seriously could not take my eyes off Brittany. She just owned that (extremely loud and awesome) crowd. I think at one point she even said "loudest crowd noise on tour". I saw them open for the North Miss Allstars at the paradise a few months back and the difference in their performance was just incredible...so much more confidence.
I honestly did not think any show would top Charles Bradley for me this year...but this show might have done it...straight through just an amazing show.
Fiiiiiinally saw these guys last night, on the final night of their current tour.
Wow. Having a hard time putting into words what I just saw. Never witnessed such rockin' soul. They were the most note-perfect band I've heard in years. It was a completely flawless show. They brought out Lee Bains and the Glory Fires for a version of "You Ain't Alone" that I can safely say sent chills up and down the spines of everyone in attendance. Just unreal. Hoping a video surfaces.
Also played a lottttt of new material. Said they were thrilled with the reception the new stuff got. Just an amazing show. Can't wait to see 'em again in May! And hopefully again after that!

Thanks for the link, bold. I'll be seeing them in the UK on 10 May in Manchester. The gig's at a Methodist hall - given that they won't have an alcohol license, the music had better make up for it. ;)

... can't wait to see them again in October. The first time I saw them was in a nice little club that fit no more than 500 people, what a gig. It had one of the greatest atmospheres I've ever had the pleasure of being a part of. Brittany a true star, love her, met her before the show and was surprised to see her smoking. She was so cool, tried sneaking in a few fans who couldn't get tickets before it sold out! I got her to autograph my ticket too, signed it with a little heart.

Whenever I play them for people, I get astonished reactions that the singer is female.
Has anyone else experienced this? Because I never ONCE thought it was a dude
My kids love hold own. My eight year was shocked that she was female. I wouldnt think most adults would make that mistake.
Anyone been to any shows lately? Like in the last month or so? I've got tickets to a show next week but something has come up and if I choose going to the concert over attending the newly-announced obligation, I'll probably be in the dog house with several people. I've seen the Shakes three times this year, so I'm just wondering, has the set changed much? I know they were playing a good chunk of new tunes (Always Alright, Makin' Me Itch, Heat Lightning) back in the spring and summer, but have they added new ones?
It would kill me to miss this show. But hopefully if the set hasn't changed much, it will slightly numb the pain.
I saw them last night at Live on the Green in Nashville. Set Hasn't changed all that much, but they did jam a little longer, and Nashville loved them.
I'm seeing them at Free Fest next weekend. More excited for PTM but I'm sure they will rock

Alabama Shakes at KCRW. I listened to this for 3 days straight. She is a monster of holy soul. I love the interview too. They've got the MMJ humor.
saw the shakes for my first time last night. I don't know if I've ever seen a crowd respond so well to a song by ANY band as they did last night to You Aint Alone. That woman is amazing.

I was going to go tonight in St. Louis but I went to buy a ticket yesterday and it was sold out! Doh!
A studio recording of everyone's favorite tune, "Always Alright", is now available on the soundtrack for some movie (that I have no interest in whatsoever) starring Bradley Cooper. If there's ever a time to cherry-pick one song off an album on iTunes, this is it!
This song has always been a live standout for me, so I'm THRILLED to get my hands on a studio cut well before we see another Shakes album. And I'm equally thrilled to report that it SOUNDS FANTASTIC! Even better than I thought it would. Those stellar Steve Cropper-esque licks sound positively soulicious and come through with so much more clarity compared to the live boots I had previously used for my "Always Alright" fix. I urge all y'all Shakes fans to obtain this track and enjoy!
thanks for the heads-up. that's been my favorite too since I started listening to some of the live recordings- and a definite highlight when I saw them live.
Very cool. I have Amazon credit towards mp3, so this will be free!

Always Alright shows up as "album only" on iTunes. Bummer! Not sure I want the whole album.
That's so weird, in the iTunes Canada store it is available as a $0.99 standalone download.
I should be able to help you out later tonight.
This is a new Alabama Shakes song featured at the end of the movie Silver Linings Playbook.
Such a jam! The movie is excellent as well. Yeah!

hope you guys recorded last nights show on axs...because that show was straight fire. first time seeing them and gotdamn brittany is even more impressive in person.
i haven't watched yet to see if i make a cameo, but judging from where the cameras were it'll be the back of my head at best.
michael kiwanuka was fantastic (but i'm already a big fan), and a genuine nice dude to boot. he was just hanging out front after the show and seemed to truly appreciate everyone coming up, shaking his hand and telling him how great his music is.
I saw that some new summer tour dates were announced the other day, and -- lucky me -- they'll be hitting my city for the third time in just over a year. Tickets are now almost $60 a pop, so some new material would really be make-or-break for me. Looks like they've got some down time in April and May, so I'm really hoping they use that time to work up some new shit for the summer!
Anyone going to the Shakes show tomorrow (3/13) at The Rodeo? I guess your ticket gets you into the actual rodeo as well.
They're playing Capitol Theatre on 6/23 which is the last day of Solid Sound. I'm seriously considering heading right to the Cap from SS. Its less than a 3 hour drive I think.
I seem to have lost my Alabama Shakes hoodie and it is making me MeNtAl that I can't find it. Where did you go hoodie??
