What she said!
As great as this looks, unless the prices of hotels come down in Newport, there's no way I'll ever do this event

WOW! This looks great. 8)

i'm feeling yesssssssss !!
ok so just got back from the lineup release party. First of all the people who run Newport are amazing..total grassroots..non profit...band friendly people who are huge music fans. Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons started the night off with a great set...they are playing and you should go see them...Joe often sits in with Deer Tick and McCauley is all over his album.
The lineup is pretty amazing. I had beers with Jay Sweet who is the director and the guy who books all the bands. He had some great stories. Things he said...Jim is playing or sitting in with at least 7 bands...Carl, Conor, Jackson Browne, Iron and Wine..etc. If you are Deer Tick fan this is the fest for you. Like last year they have booked the Newport Blues Cafe for 3 nights and he said McCauley has already contacted about 90% of the people playing the fest to come and either sit in or do sets...last year was amazing... a bar that holds about 200 people tops I saw Dawes, Middle Bro, Corndawg, Felice, M Ward and others all play and then Deer Ticks plays a set to end it every night.
He said M Ward couldn't officially be at the fest but he's about 99% sure he is flying in and coming to sit in...and that means a possible MOF reunion during Conors set. He said M had a blast last year and loved the fest and def wants to be back but there were a few stipulations about acts who played last year playing again...at least the bigger ones.
El Chode- there are a ton of options....don't look just in Newport, I usually stay in Middleton, RI which is probably 2 miles out and way way cheaper. Last year we stayed in a Best Western (Penny was with us for a night) and it was a quick cab ride to the fest.
and not to mention Newport is probably one of the nicest places you will ever see music...I can't even explain how excited I am about this lineup. I don't think any other fest can touch it.

Exactly! This plus the Newport festival would be sick. The lineup and location. Winning!
And again, JohnYYac for board MVP for posting the entire list. Thank you.

i actually shared that room w/bold (along with 10 other people) last year and we WALKED home after the Deer Tick/Felice Bros/Jonny Corndawg/Delta Spirit late night set. (as I recall, I was very hammered and tried to walk along the freeway--but alas found a more suitable route)...i digress...
but wow, i'd almost rather make sure i had tix for the late night sets instead..

Alabama Shakes are missing.
It is a pretty manageable Fest..the stages are an easy walk from each other. I tend to not see much on the main stage.
This really is a spectacular display of musical fabulousness! MMJ and New Multitudes? That doesn't suck.
West coast joneser over here! Almost hyperventilating over the lack of west coast dates and so far there are four BIG festival dates on the east coast. Envisioning a headlining slot at Outsidelands.. Om..
This is an absolutely stellar lineup. Great talent from top to bottom.
Alabama shakes are saturday too :D :D

Normally not that quick but talking to the people who run it last night...they sold more pre-lineup tickets than they ever have and with this lineup..and MMJ...I'm guessing it does sell out fairly quick. I wouldn't wait.
Bold how does one get into the Newport Blues cafe afterparties? I have been there it is a small bar venue and wouldn't hold nearly 1/16th of the NFF attendees...I missed out last yr due to not really knowing it was really happening, don't plan on not attempting to make it in at least 1 night this yr.
I purchased 2 tickets as well. Now just need to find someone to pick us up at the airport and to find a place to stay. Wow, I didn't realize that accommodations would be so expensive. We might need to drive down after all to save on flights.
In! For those of you who worry about scheduling conflicts, don't worry. Jim can't be in two places at once. just follow him around from stage to stage. The good thing is that the festival is so small so it's not a pain to walk around.
Can i just say that the food at Newport Folk fest was really good?! Something good about that grilled pizza!

last year tickets were selling for double face the week before the show. Not that I condone scalping, but there was a ton of demand and you would have NO problem selling IMO.
was thinking of Forecastle, but this might be the one to do!!
I think I'll take my two older daughters (8 and 10) to their first MMJ show. I hate missing Carl and the rest of Sunday's line up, but think 2 days is pushing it on many fronts. Probably just Saturday for me, Katherine, and Maddie.
Anyone else expect to bring kids that will stay through the MMJ set Saturday night?

Last Deer Tick announced it on their FB. It was supposed to be 2 night but then at the Fest they added Sunday too. I would grab them as soon as they announce it.
Oh and the food is great at this Fest.

This Fest is very family friendly. The music ends earlier also..the closing set is usually around 6:30-7pm.
People looking for cheaper places to stay..this is where I have stayed in the past. It is not dirt cheap but cheaper than anywhere in Newport. Also it is prob the nicest Best Western I've ever been too. Nice hotel bar..big clean rooms and a big pool. A quick (less than 5 min) can into town. There are also other hotel chains in this area.

but last year i was able to grab 2 tix a week before off someone---think it's easy to buy and sell last min
I'm just gonna hold out that tickets don't sell out for a couple weeks, cause this line up blows my mind more every time I look at it. Unfortunately, MMJ hometown show + Wilco in my back yard and Eddie Vedder + MMJ in NOLA are priorities.

over all, the NFF line up is the best, imo. 90% of the acts are bands I'd want to see. However, the 1,2 punches mentioned above make those two line ups the best since roo 08 when Pearl Jam and MMJ late night happened

I expected something with Jim's influence when it was announce a while back that he had joined an advisory board for NFF. I am surprised there's no specific Yim Yames set, as he has a solo album out this year. Not like he won't get plenty of exposure throughout the weekend.

I agree, dudes. NFF seems much more Jim-like. I think, though, that NFF would seem like that with out Jim on the advisory board. NFF is never going to have electronic acts or metal acts or hip hop acts, ya know...

agree completely. Newport has the luxury of not worrying to much about drawing huge crowds and hence over-diversifying the lineup. They will sell out for sure.

I can't even explain how awesome this was. I have some cool pix from Sunday night of people crowd surfing during the Deer Tick/Middle Bro/Dawes/M ward set. Highlight of the whole Fest for me...then my friend Joe Fletcher did The Gunn Club's Jack On Fire cover w Deer Tick. It was great.
Exciting!
Does anyone know how the 2-day tickets work? Will we receive a ticket for each day or one ticket for both days? Lets say I can't make it on Sunday, will I be able to let someone use the ticket if I attended the fest the day before using my 2-day ticket?
fyi, imo Newport is the BEST music festival out there. I've been going on and off since 1990 and have seen Jim there both times he was there.
The vibe and music scene is unpretentious, fun, relaxed and not ridiculous to move around unlike many other festivals. The spirit of the whole show is special.
This is the one this summer that is not to be missed.
Forecastle is also the festival that is not to be missed.
Oh, and MMJ at New Orleans Jazz Fest? Also, not to be missed.
Be sure and check out Punch Brothers y'all!

and the above question...most bands play just like normal. Delta spirit set rocked last year...I've seen Wilco there do their normal electric set...only if it says "special set" or "acoustic set" like the Pixies did a few years ago.

I bet MMJ will be half acoustic/electric...I think you're right Bold in that if it was only acoustic he would have said. Most bands play their normal sets. I like the term 'special.' Trey Anastasio played a deemed 'acoustic' set several years ago on the main stage and it was pretty awful set.

Veering off to the side a little...sounds similar to High Sierra. Really untouchable in terms of accessibility of artists, closeness to the stage (if you desire,) unpretentiousness of attendees and general overall mellowness. HSMF is a hippie fest, for sure. But sounds like these two have a lot in common in terms of vibe they're trying to create. At this point I don't think there's a snowball's chance I'd be able to hack a Bonnaroo or Hangout (even with VIP - still blech). This is the one I will be jonesing to miss. Who am I kidding...I'm jonesing for all of them! But this one is really hitting me hard. Dang kids always getting in the way ;) Need a west coast announcement and stat.

Sara--you should consider it! If you were here for 2 weeks, you could do Forecastle (see the boys in their hometown) and then NFF (see Jim in his real element-running the show at NFF).
Two day passes are gone already?!
It does look like 2-day passes are gone, but single day tickets are still available for both days, only about $20 more than a 2-day pass.
Also, can someone who has been before let me know if the main acts all play on the same stage, or are they on alternate stages.
In other words, what are the chances on Saturday that I will simultaneously get to see Patty Griffin and Iron and Wine while securing a spot in front of Carl for the MMJ set later than night?
Forgive the double post, but...
For those with Daytrotter, they've set up a playlist for NFF 2012 (http://www.daytrotter.com/#!/playlists/92864).
No MMJ included (no MMJ Daytrotter session :( )

I want to go too! That lineup just looks ridiculously good :D :o
Sara--you should consider it! If you were here for 2 weeks, you could do Forecastle (see the boys in their hometown) and then NFF (see Jim in his real element-running the show at NFF).
Oh I've been considering it day and night, but I can't get anyone to go with me and though I've been on trips alone before, going to the US might just be a bit too far to go alone. :'( I'll keep nagging my friends though, one might cave!

Sara, lots of good forum folks here will be in Newport so you would NEVER be alone. We would be happy to adopt you and play US hosts & hostesses if you can make it. Doubt you would ever regret a trip to Newport. It's a special place.

It does look like 2-day passes are gone, but single day tickets are still available for both days, only about $20 more than a 2-day pass.
Also, can someone who has been before let me know if the main acts all play on the same stage, or are they on alternate stages.

It depends who you are considering the main acts. MMJ will be on the main stage, so will Jackson Brown. After that you just don't know. Patty Griffin has a good chance of being on the main stage.
In my experience the best stuff always goes down on the side stages. I usually bounce between the two other stages...I'm not a fan of the main stage where people just camp out and sit the whole time. I wish the Pit was a lot bigger at least.
Man if 2 day passes sell out (again) soon caroline are out. We're outa town right now so not trying to spend all the money now. Oh well if it sells out I'll finally have extra money for my steam engine tattoo

Eric--there will be tix avail--either 2 day passes or tix going for face or cheaper a couple weeks before..people always buy early but back out. I got 2 tix the week before last year..
Sorry, I was typing on my phone. I just found out that the group I go to a festival per year with is trying for All Good this year. 3 weekends in a row at music festivals is a pretty challenging thought.
Newport has the line up. All Good has the camping and the free price, hmmmm

Oh you're just too nice, thank you! That definitely feels good to know :) Maybe I'll look at how much an air flight ticket might cost...
