I'll start with an album I just recently discovered, and am so glad I did (thanks mjk and Tracy).
1. Dire Straits - (Self Titled)
Also the appropriately titled first album by...
2. Pearl Jam - Ten
Kid A
Who's Next
Marquee Moon
Are You Experienced?
Kick Out The Jams
Maggot Brain
Blue Train
Elephant
Copper Blue
Graceland
American Beauty
Meddle
I don't think MMJ have a 10. There's an 8 and a couple of 8.5s, but no 10s, yet.
Perfect From Now On
Time Fades Away / On The Beach / Tonight's The Night
The Soft Bulletin
Pet Sounds
I have a pre-determined list for just such a topic
Pearl Jam - Yeild
MMJ - It Still Moves
Monsters OF Folk - s/t
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Saves The Day - Through Being Cool
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Born To Run
American Beauty
These albums might not be the greatest of all time, but to me, they do what they were designed to do absolutely flawlessly.
OK Computer
J Roddy Walston & the Business
...and Justice For All
Ten
Our Endless Numbered Days
ween - quebec
john prine - sweet revenge
bob dylan - desire, nashville skyline
the flaming lips - soft bulletin, yoshimi battles the pink robots
beck - odelay, mutations, sea changes, midnight vultures
rage against the machine - self titled, evil empire
neil young - after the gold rush, on the beach
radiohead - kid a, amnesiac, ok computer
stevie wonder - innervisions
nine inch nails - downward spiral
eric clapton - unplugged
Led Zeppelin II
The Stones - Exile on Main Street and Sticky Fingers
Paul Simon - Graceland
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Neil Young - Harvest
Jay-Z The Blueprint
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
AC/DC - Back in Black (I am aware that all their songs sound the same, but this album kicks ass)
Radiohead-The Bends , Hail To The Thief , Kid A & In Rainbows

Love - Forever Changes (still trying to pimp this album)
The Clash - London Calling
Bob Marley - Exodus
Radiohead - OK Computer, Kid A
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
MMJ - Z
I'm a little surprised more people haven't mentioned Z. That definitely qualifies as a perfect album in my book. Others that come to mind:
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Radiohead - OK Computer and Kid A
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Tool - Lateralus
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Son Volt - Trace
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run and Wild, Innocent, E St. Shuffle
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
Smiths-The Queen is Dead
Funny thing is the queen is dead isn't even my favorite smiths album (strangeways is), but goddamn if that album isn't perfect.

I said it in another thread today... As far as studio albums go, Z is my last favorite MMJ album. Live, on the other hand, most of the songs are monsters. But as an album with a general flow, it sounds more like a greatest hits to me

I dont agree. In fact, I'd say Z is probably the most, at least, sonically cohesive album they have. I think I get what you are saying about the greatest hits thing, as far as being a fan now, but Z was a pretty stylistic change for them when it was released.

Sorry, but Jaimoe and eWind are both clinically insane. ;) Z is a fucking 11. It's every bit of a Dark Side of The Moon and even more in my opinion. Ask yourself when the last time you put it in. Then, after you realize it's been wayyyy to long. Play it front to back next time you have 45 minutes alone with yourself, turn it up and come back here and tell me it's not a ten.
Dire Straits - Sire Straits
Bob Dylan - Desire
The Who - The Who By Numbers
Beatles - Revolver
Bruce - Born to Run
Zappa - Joe's Garage (Disc 1. Parts of Disc 2 are great, also, but not all are perfect 10s)
GD - Reckoning
Robert Palmer - Sneakin 'Sally
Neil - After the Goldrush
Phish - Picture of Nectar
Stones - Exile
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Rush - Exit Stage Left
Stephen Stills - Manassas
Traffic - John Barleycorn
Ween - Quebec
For starters..

I think MMJ does that multiple 10s - they're called At Dawn and It Still Moves. Then they have an album that perfectly captures the idea of an album. Flowing from start to finish cohesively, yet lacking some excitement... And that's called Circuital. Then there's 3 albums that are all collections of great, exciting songs, yet lacking the cohesive factor. Those are obviously the remaining 3. I would definitely say that the album factor is better represented in EU than in Z and TTF. I know I know, this whole paragraph is deserves a bunch of bashing. What can I say though, those are just my preferences I suppose

It's all good. It's Still Moves and At Dawn are actually more special to me in a lot of ways. But I think Z is groundbraking and spectacular in a way that nothing else is. A special creative moment in time.

Saying evil urges has more of an "album factor" than anything makes me question if you even know what that means. Sorry, I actually love eu, but it might be the most all over the place album I've ever heard in my life, by anyone.

The beauty of EU is that it's so galbum ending, yet some how is obviously a deliberate collection of songs.

It's like thin crust and thick crust pizza. Everyone has their favorite but you wouldn't want to live without either one of them.
The thing to me about Z is that it is just one of those albums where there is not a single lull or anything in the world about it I would want to change. It is just 100% consistently awesome.
The highs on Z to me aren't as high as the absolute showstoppers on It Still Moves, but it also does not have a single low, whereas to me It Still Moves has high and less-highs (I can't call anything abou that record a low).
ok, we doing this? we havin this discussion? It's MMJ, each album to us is gonna be near-perfect or at least likeable but this is how i roll em out.
TTF - cutting teeth
At Dawn - soul-searching
ISM - swinging for the fences
Z - 10
EU - transition
Circuital - amalgam of identity
to me I don't listen to Z near as much as AD, ISM, or even at this time Circuital but I think if we're talking album perfection, Z is where the band really used the studio to hit all their highest peaks. The album is produced extremely well, the songs are among their strongest and it never overstays it's welcome or diverts it's stride.
It Still Moves meanders too much 3/4s through, which is the case on MMJ's first three albums. There's a couple of weak songs on Z too. Their last two efforts aren't 10s either, and we all know it. I think Z is their most complete album though, with the most highs and epics.
I think a case could be made (and a lot have) that 'Into the Woods' is a weaker track but to me it fits within the splendor of the album whole...otherwise imho i don't think there is a weak track on Z.
I think I'll make a MMJ > Pink Floyd analogy here.
The Tennessee Fire > Piper at the Gates of Dawn
At Dawn > Saucerful of Secrets
It Still Moves > Meddle & Animals
Z > Dark Side of the Moon & Wish You Were Here
Evil Urges > The Wall & The Final Cut
Circuital > an album Waters's ego prevented from existing and Gilmour tried to make
I'm having second thoughts as I write it, but the point is, great bands have the experimental, early sound that exposes the talent and the promise of greatness to come. Some personnel changes have both subtle and extreme impact on how the sound evolves. Collections of songs become a bit tighter and flow into each other. Production gets cleaner, more refined. Then, experimentation returns and often turns off the hardcore fans who've been there from the start. Then there's redemption, a reminder that the talent hinted at in the beginning is there, more mature and focused. The question is, are we growing with the band or too set in our ways to accept that MMJ is making the music that they want, not what they think the fans want. Perhaps that is at the heart of most true 10s.
That said, just as I would say of the corresponding Floyd albums above, Z is MMJ's true 10, but It Still Moves is my personal 10.
I love that you Deadheads have a studio album as a perfect 10. American Beauty is indeed a 10. I guess for me a perfect 10 would be the albums I've listened to from top to bottom the most times without skipping a song throughout my days.
So many jazz masterpieces but I'll take the two that really take me somewhere
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
ATCQ - Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders
Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
MMJ - At Dawn - there's this album then all the other one's MMJ have put out. Studio recording wise, I don't think anything touches it by them.
Quote from: Jaimoe on Mar 23, 2012, 07:26 PM
I don't think MMJ have a 10. There's an 8 and a couple of 8.5s, but no 10s, yet.

Exactly right, and so well said. I will say I would put the first 3 mmj records as 10's. Z - was a great record but it was also their first fork in the road leading to what they are now. I still love the band, and Jim, but I just can't say with all my heart that I'm loving the direction they've taken on the last two albums.
At Dawn was a sprawling masterpiece, EU was a sprawling mess. Circuital was a perfect ALBUM, I'm just not convinced that it was slaved over.....the first three records sound like they were Slaved over, like they were just ingrained in Jim's soul. Circuital sounds like it was somewhat produced. Of course I've also had many great times with Circuital and Evil Urges....drumming on a ceiling fan to "Evil Urges".....Singing at the top of my lungs to "outta my system", Losing My Mind To "Highly Suspicious" etc. etc.
Jim is the best producer the bands ever had.
TN FIRE - Saw God
At Dawn - Felt God
It Still Moves - Touched God
Slow, Slow and Movin Away are two of my favorite songs they've written, so I'm still really looking forward to the next chapter. :-*
I just hope Jim takes over the production again.....also can't wait for the solo album.
oh, and....
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Explosions In The Sky - Those Who Tell The Truth...
The National - Alligator
Galaxie 500 - On Fire
Iron and Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean

Idlewild South

So many great albums in this thread! Here's my list of perfect 10 albums, old and new.
After the Gold Rush - Neil Young
At Dawn - MMJ
Benaroya Hall - Pearl Jam
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Days of Future Past - The Moody Blues
Down II - Down
Directions to See a Ghost - The Black Angels
Friend and Foe - Menomena
Head on the Door - The Cure
Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
It Still Moves - MMJ
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa
Meddle - Pink Floyd
Okonokos - MMJ
The Satanic Satanist - Portugal. The Man
Us - Peter Gabriel
Yield - Pearl Jam
Z - MMJ
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
Ok, I'll play.
Doolittle - Pixies
Blackberry Belle - Twilight Singers (I mean listen to it. It's like super-perfect. It's a concept-album without clobbering you over the head that it's a concept album)
Gentlemen - Afghan Whigs
It's a Shame About Ray - Lemonheads
Copper Blue - Sugar (Beaster should be included with Copper Blue; an album-length EP recorded at the same time)
Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins
Nevermind - Nirvana (Not like it's my favorite thing of all time, but really? I hated it when it came out, not because it wasn't great, but because it blew up my friend's little clubs. Watch that VH1 Classic Albums thing about it and deny the greatness. It also changed music in a more profound way than anything since the Beatles or Elvis).

Yes, that is awesome. I would add to these descriptions:

Circuital- God said he'd meet me at Applebee's but never showed up
Whippy and Tracy, you have both just summarized one of my high school dating experiences. Camaros are not roomy, mind you. Also, God didn't quite live up to the hype.

And did you hit the LH show at Old Rock House? If not, you missed a good show.
I think Radiohead has had 3 perfect 10 albums - OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows.
TV on the Radio - Dear, Science
U2 - Joshua Tree, Actung Baby
Michael Jackson - Thriller
The National - High Violet
Pearl Jam - Vs.
Prince - Purple Rain
Black Mountain - In Future
DBT - Southern Rock Opera
MMJ - Z
And great call on Bowie, Ledbetter.
damn, I forgot about Purple Rain.

Ahhhh missed that. And know I remember we've talked about that before! I almost went to that show but didn't! Doh! No crabbyness from Evan?
Z - God gave us Don Dante, then he whipped out some black leather whip straps and went to town on Jim's ass while he played the solo to lay Low.....then after that, instead of feeling guilty and calling it a day, he did some acid and cranked out "Into The Woods"
At lest two people claim that "consolers of the lonely" is a ten? Uh, "Broken Boy Soldier" is a far superior album. I don't get it.
I'm just glad none of the DBT fans have called anything after Decoration Day a ten.
"Nevermind" is a masterpiece but the production just doesn't do it any justice. I listen to "In Utero" and can't help but get sad about what could have been. At least Brendan O'Brien was able to fix TEN. I mean, I love TEN, but the only thing holding it back was the glossy production. Same with Nevermind....it was just that time period I guess. The two greatest albums of the 90's were nearly ruined by their production.

10/10 :)
For me, Z is clearly the most brilliant and perfect as an album but if somebody gave me truth serum, I'd probably admit that At Dawn is my favorite (Honest Man holds it back from being the '10' - ha) and if I got marooned on a desert island and could only take one, it would have to be Okonokos... ???
Anyway, I'd try to sneak these onto the island too...

I wouldn't call Consolers of the Lonely a perfect 10 as I think it is a bit inconsistent, but to me the high points of CotL way surpass anything on Broken Boy Soldier. Both great albums, though.

I do not agree. I think the production on Nevermind by Butch Vig is masterful. Ten was never my thing, so I'm sure about that. Seems to be a common refrain from my 90's friends, "It's allright, but it sounds like a Boston album - all clean sounding and shit." I went along with this nonsense for about 15 years and then came to my senses. Watch Butch in that documentary take the songs apart piece by piece - it's really mesmerizing.
Good stuff in here...I'd add these:
Otis Redding – Otis Blue
Stevie Wonder – Talking Book
Augustus Pablo – King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
David Bowie – Hunky Dory
Charles Mingus – The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Sam Cooke – Night Beat
Faces – A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse
Duke Ellington – Money Jungle
The Congos – Heart of the Congos
Duke Ellington - And His Mother Called Him Bill

BBS is a good album no doubt, but I think it loses steam towards the end. Consolers, to me feels more like THE Raconteurs album, a better example of the members' ultimate vision. Great flow and some nice ups and down throughout. Can't think of a song on there that I just flat out don't get into at all. I think the highs from CotL are higher and the lows are on par with some of the best material from the first album.

It's so nice to stumble upon a fellow Verve fan Penny :bath: It does however compel me to reassess the logic in my offering of perfect '10's' and give you some props along the way for recognizing Urban Hymns on your list...
I chose 'Z' over At Dawn because, though both are brilliant and genius, I believe that 'Z' makes a perfect statement as an ALBUM. In addition, I do believe that 'Z' was groundbreaking in many ways already discussed in this and other threads. Staying with that logic, I really should have gone with Urban Hymns as the same type of statement by the Verve, and most people would undoubtedly consider it to be the their masterpiece. In essence, for the sake of this exercise 'Z' = Urban Hymns.
However, Northern Soul holds a special place for me as it was my introduction to the Verve...the same as At Dawn was for MMJ. Not to mention, both albums are all about texture and mood and ethereal stuff that is hard to put into words but easy to feel. While NS and AD might not make the most perfect 'album' statement (whatever the hell that means), they are so so very powerful and beautiful and imperfect in all the right ways. That said At Dawn = Northern Soul.
I guess the conclusion to this folly is that the criteria for my choice of album 10's was a bit scattered and schizophrenic (Hmmmm...based on that, maybe EU should have been my MMJ choice!) ;D ;D
Cheers!

I've seen it, I agree he did some amazing things. I prefer the production and overall sound and vibe on In Utero, I'm a huge Albini fan....I think Butch just popped Nevermind up a bit too much for the greater good. If you really get right down to it was his production on that album caused Kurt to shoot himself in the head with a shotgun. I guess that ends up either being amazing production or shitty production depending on how you look at it. ;)
I thinks it's apparent now more than ever that they (jim) reached their creative peak with Z. Gideon and Dondante is some powerfully epic stuff.

I was touched when JJ named Shannon as one of the inspirations for The Way That He Sings in VH1 Storytellers. That statement made sense of the world by linking two of my "man crushes" who were otherwise a decade or so apart. If I wasn't a man, I might have cried (cough, cough). I saw Blind Melon on the Soup tour about 2 weeks before Shannon died :'(. I'm gonna take a couple of body blows for saying this, but to me Shannon Hoon was a greater loss than Kurt Cobain.

Slow, Slow and Movin Away are two of my favorite songs they've written, so I'm still really looking forward to the next chapter. :-*
Word.
Interesting what you say about these two tunes. It took a little while for them to grow on me (much longer for Movin than Slow) and I've felt that they were special, albeit not as gripping as so many other MMJ songs, IMO. But I still can't shake them no matter how hard I try! Slow Tune has become magical to me at this point. I, too, can't wait to see what the next direction is. It's all good, as far as I'm concerned. Which is funny, since I'm the "pickiest Deadhead" you might ever meet. But in my eyes MMJ can ALMOST do no wrong ;)

It is interesting to think about what loss of a musician has affected you the deepest. For me, it was definitely Jeff Buckley, I literally cried when I heard he had died. I think that is the only time the loss of a musician has actually made me cry.
I don't know Blind Melon beyond the big song, but you are inspiring me to check the album out. You guys are also inspiring me to get more educated on The Verve. I have Urban Hymns and love it, but I need to check out the other two early records.
For me losing Blind Melon was huge. I was such a fan, and I think this band really could have gone on to be something big. To me they were in the same vein as an MMJ and I could easily see Jimmy James and Shannon collaborating somehow. I've always loved the first record there's not a thing wrong with it, but when I first listened to Soup in its entirety I was completely bowled over. It's just perfection. You go ahead and listen to "The Duke" and "Mouthful of Cavities" and "St. Andrew's Hall" and tell me that's not some of the best music you have ever heard. What this band could have been... ugh.
As much as it pains me to admidt these are perfect albums because I've grown to detest the band heavily since about 1993 but...
War
The Joshua Tree
Achtung Baby
