Anybody know what Jim and the boys are up to right now?
Filming movie? Practicing new songs? Cutting new album? Vacation?
Also, does anyone know if they canceled the Europe shows to do this movie?
Good questions, grasshopper ;)
I certainly hope that the days involve long naps, sleeping in 'till noon, walks along shaded trails, fantastic meals with friends and loved ones, and generally relaxing to the nth power.
that .. is a great big "fat chance". Somebody who knows what the band's up to help me here. There's never been this much space between gigs...
On the subject of the film, MMJ was shooting it last week. Don't know if they'll be shooting anymore though. The film shoots for another 3-4 weeks in KY, then goes to L.A. for the remaining two months of shooting. My friend who's a PA working on the film asked Jim last week if they cancelled the European tour for the film and his response was something like, "Awww, sort of..." Then he trailed off. Seeing that he didn't wish to elaborate, my friend changed the subject to Lebowskifest and that was that...
Cameron Crowe has Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst rehearsing today and filming tomorrow in Louisville next to Churchill Downs if you want to check out the scene. They're at Wagners Pharmacy shooting a diner scene. Doubt that MMJ is in the scene but maybe they've become fast friends with Cameron (or Kirsten!) and will be hanging out.

Wow! Iiiinnnnteresting... That's a hard toss up, European Tour, shooting a film with Cameron Crowe and being closer to home...
I was with you JC, really hoping they'd get to chill. Maybe they're killing two birds with one stone (although, shooting a movie isn't really, ah, relaxing.)
But I guess if you get all of these opportunities, it's hard to say no. Especially when the opportunities are so very cool. And it'll be good publicity for them, too, hopefully. Maybe get their name out to more people...
Film? Film? What's with the film? Is there another topic on that up here, 'cuz I've been away for a few weeks and this is totally new to me. What's the deal?
Okay, I just found it. Nevermind... ;D

..
Disappoint some folk in Europe or make a film?
Tough one.
Shows can be rescheduled, but the movie is a now or never proposition once it is into production. I wouldn't begrudge anyone making that choice. If in fact that was a choice that was made. Don't think anyone who knows for certain has offered that tidbit on this forum.

... the speculation about the tour cancellation continues ...
I still wonder, whatever the reason of the cancellation was, why it hasn't been more clearly stated? If it is the film, so be it, it's a huge opportunity for the band, which they should grab with both hands, but again IF it's the film, why not simply be honest about it? "circumstances beyond My Morning Jacket's control" doesn't mean much imho ...
However, I'm sure the reasons are valid (as if we can judge), and I count on them to come back for a massive European tour somewhere in the (near) future ;). For now I hope they spend the time off to relax, enjoy the film shooting, get inspiration for brilliant new songs, and continue with renewed energy!
There was a delightful, long interview with Cameron Crowe this past week. Crowe was asked,"So what music will you use in the movie? Do you have it all sorted out?"
He answered cryptically," I do. But if you don't mind, I'm keeping it close to the vest because I want it to be a surprise. You know, there is a lot of authentic music that has its roots in this area, then there is all kinds of other music in there too. But I want it to feel authentic, and it's music that you hear when you are living here."
So whatever it is, he ain't sayin. It could be Tara Jane O'Neill, or Freakwater, or Shipping News, or The Rachel's, or David Pajo, or Nappy Roots... or, and this is my bet, given the other info and hints in the forum, Jim and the boys.
The Crowe interview is interesting in its entirety. It was in the Louisville Courier-Journal.

because Cameron Crowe is trying to keep the film's musicians a surprise, so it would ruin it if the band jsut up and announced it.

Is this speculation or has he mentioned that he want's to keep the musicians a surprise?

CC mentions it in this interview:

Thanks for that link... cool interview... but I kept wanting him to say it!!! I can't wait to see this film. I hope the boys are showcased or at least represented well. I got a feeling it's gonna be a pretty decent film. Do ya'll think that MMJ will become more mainstream as a result of their involvement with this film?

Hey, it's got Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom in it. There's no way that this movie isn't gonna get em some exposure. What's cool is that Crowe is such a big fan of the band, and he's doing em quite possibly the biggest favor anybody could ask for, not to mention they get paid. I don't see how MMJ loses in this situation, at all.
I've got a feeling this film could end with MMJ. From the way Cameron talks about this film I don't think he could have picked a better band to fit into it. This could mean that my two favorite bands end two amazing movies by two amazing writer/directors.
Pearl Jam - Man Of The Hour - Big Fish - Tim Burton
My Morning Jacket - ? - Elizabethtown - Cameron Crowe
It would be cool to see MMJ rock the Grammys.
Ok now I'm getting way ahead of ourselves!

MAN...NO LIE!!!;D That would be serious and awesome...it will happen one day anyway...but anticipating it is really fun huh? :D
Huge..
The Stars are all in line for this band...
Yep,
you know things are happening for your band when you are working with the likes of Cameron Crow, knowing his work does exceptionally well (I've got a feeling MMJ hordes will turn out in a big way for this flick). every time they put another notch in their belts (increased exposure, etc) makes me feel all the more prescient--when I 1st met Jim, Patrick, Tommy, Bo, and Carl on a cold New England night back in January, I told them they were gonna explode this year! ;D
IMDb is now listing MMJ as actors in Elizabethtown ;D
They seem to be playing members of Jessie's band.
Movie is coming out Summer 2005.

Kind of a catchy tune, I would have to listen to it a few times for it to really sink in. Do you know who from MMJ are playing on this track?

I don't think they are playing on that track.
Nice tune anyway!
I went to a My Morning Jacket concert and they played a bunch of songs, but they weren't filming a movie or anything. When I listened to my cd's i heard some of the songs they played on them!!
"Mabey I'm to blame for his short bitter fucked up life!"

Spooky.
Same thing happened to me.
no lie, it happens all the time to me--go figure
I just read a Paul Westerberg interview this week in which he mentions that he wrote three songs for the movie Elizabethtown and had already given them to Cameron Crowe. So, apparently some of the songs for the movie are set.

cool! Westerberg does some good shit! his stuff would mesh well with MMJ's style. :D
