Title: Yim vs. Jim
Post by: sweatboard on Nov 14, 2012, 11:56 PM
I really hope he just sticks with good ole Jim.  It's a good solid name that I've come to associate with his great songs....I couldn't ever really get behind Yim.  I already know Jim's weird (in the most awesome way possible),  I don't think he needs to go as far as to fuck with his name.  Was it supposed to be a joke about Prince?  Mabey I just never "got it"?

I always figured he changed it partly so it would be easier to search the interweb for Yim and easier to find the albums at the record store.

Yes, that's what I thought too. And also:

"I consider the Yim Yames moniker the same as Jim James, but I feel like it's just a little bit funnier and a little bit weirder, but it can still be pronounced Jim James if someone wants to call me that. I just feel like it's a little more unforgettable."

thank you sarahbannanabear

I love the A-Team refrence...I Love it when a plan comes together...

It's one of those things where every time something like that happens, I try to let the big forces of the universe know how grateful I am    :cheesy: :bath:

I still don't buy the Yim moniker....I LOVE "JIM"!

I still don't know what "Yim" is really supposed to mean....other than a unfounded attempt to distance himself from the band.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe because when you search for JJ you get quite a few other people? I'm glad he's ditched it too. It was just a little too goofy, and his music is much more serious than that goofy name.

I had assumed that one day, after signing "Jim James" on something, possibly while a little high, Jim said, "That totally looks like I wrote "Yim Yames"!  *giggle* *giggle* I'm just gonna call myself "Yim Yames" now."

It strikes me as the kind of thing one notices and implements when pot is involved

And really, he uses a made up name for his public persona already. I can easily read Jim in my head any time I see Yim.

I think the deliberate change back to Jim for his solo work is an attempt to dial down the weirdo-goofy and appear a little more serious or professional about this work.

For me they are two different people: Jim James is the bold wondrous leader of the rock band of the gods.
Yim is the soulfully soft singer who walks by himself but plays with friends. When I see Yim...I know it is Jim James doing solo music.

The best thing about Jim or Yim...they both fucking kick ass!

I thoiught the reason he did that was originally because there was a solo artist named Jim James?

I saw Ben Sollee at a real small venue back in '09 (maybe 10). He mentioned during his set that he he was working on Dear Companion and Jim James was producing. I was right in front of Ben and I said, "Don't you mean Yim Yames?" He did not acknowledge me. Since then Yim always reminded me of that shameful moment.

HA I just pictured and laughed at that.

Yeah Yim is whack. I feel like an idiot saying it outloud. Do we know where he came up with Jim James? I mean its weird to even come up with doubling his name

It was my understanding that the origin of Yim Yames was the way his signature looked when writing "Jim James", as seen on the cover of "Tribute To".

I'm glad he went back.  I found Yim to be extraordinarily obnoxious in the least.

IMO, the only thing dumber than a public figure changing their name is changing it back.  However, I hated "Yim" so much that I'm going to let him slide on this one...

Yup, that is true, Yim is how we would pronounce Jim in Swedish.

Jim James comes from Tyrone, doesn't it?  And he adopted it since noone could ever say "Olliges" properly.

I've always thought that but I've never read anything where he specifically credited Tyrone.

About 25 yrs. ago my friend, an amateur actor, was in a local production playing a Swede.
He would come around in character, practicing his accent. He always called me Yim, and the nickname stuck.
So, I always got a chuckle  when hearing of Yim Yames. I took it to mean that JJ was 100%
w/ MMJ and YY was in to all the other projects.
As for calling himself JJ to begin w/- seems natural to me. Another nickname from my youth was Jimi James - after Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, one of (James) Hendrixs' bands in NY before he went to England.
The late character actor John Qualen (a Canadian w/ Swedish parents) often played a Swede ( The Searchers, Long Voyage Home) and would exclaim "Yumpin' Yiminy!!"

That was my theory on why he changed in. I can picture him getting called Yim Yames all the time while on tours in Europe, and he probably thought that was humorous. I don't have a problem with the whole Yim thing, but I'm glad he went with Jim James for this. I think it would be confusing for some people if he continued with Yim, Jim James is a more familiar brand with people.
Hockey player Jaromir Jagr is a good example of J's pronounced like Y's...

I recalled the same, found it...

LEO: What about your name change from Jim Olliges to Jim James?

JJ: It was just easier. When I was playing a lot of open mic nights, I'd put Jim Olliges and they'd go, Jim Olgus or something. I liked the way Jim James sounds. Kinda sounds like a western gunslinger name. It's a lot easier, and it impacts on your brain quicker.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was the other way around.  He had already changed his name and got a chuckle out of hearing it in a song and began to cover it.

What am I doing in this thread?  Ochocinco?

Hee hee
Look how cute Yim and Yenny look together in Yenny's pic

So I've wondered what came first, the chicken or the egg?  Did Jim get his name from Tyrone and then start singing it, or did he sing it because his name was Jim James?  Or none of the above?
