I know most songs for me are better live, but are there songs in the MMJ catalog that you don't necessarily enjoy when listening to the album but are totally into when they play live. The two songs that jump to my mind are I'm Amazed which has an awesome riff near the end that Carl kills and makes the song awesome live, but it just sounds normal on the album. The other would be The Day is Coming which I love live, but tend to skip over when listening to the album. Thoughts?
I'll tolerate The Day is Coming live, but it still is the worst song on Ciruital or ever. First Light is one that I like live much better than I like it on the recordings too. That's about all I can think of right now. If more come to me, I'll come back.

I agree first light kicks ass live compared to the studio version.
I also agree with manonthemoon, I'm Amazed is much better live-I really like the versions where Patrick gets a good extended drum intro
Phone will forever be the best live song when compared to its studio/silo version, IMHO. especially with what they've been doing the last SCS tour

War Begun, Phone, and Steam Engine.
I always considered At Dawn to be their "studio album" (outside of Phone) and everything else they ever released sounding better live.
I have still yet to hear a digestible version of Black Metal, live or studio. Maybe they should try it solo; so low I can't hear it.

Rich! For sureee
Also, I do like Picture of You studio version but hearing it at T5 was a spiritual experience and beyond. When Jim started singing "You don't say I'll wait up"--Niagara Falls....I've been trying to re-live that moment but no recording does justice. One of, if not, the most profound times I've had in my life.
I agree with any of the TFire songs and Phone for sure. All things considered, I don't think studio Steam is that off at all.
Port Chester taught me that Outta My System (BLUCAS!) and Carried Away can be pretty awesome songs!
For me "Im Amazed" has become a stronger live song recently. Close second for me is "First Light".
CHIMMJFAN
Dondante is great from the studio version but live it's another level in which i can't yet describe.
I Think I'm Going to Hell is better live too , a song that shows Jim's range well. I also have been enjoying their new version of Nashville to Kentucky.
Trick question, Ditka is God.
I would go with War Begun.

Agreed. Wish that day had never come if ya know whatta mean..
First Light is growing on me...
For me it's easy - Honest Man.
Yup, Honest Man and The Day Is Coming
First Light, Black Metal, I'm Amazed all sound best if on mute
My list would start w/ Dondante. 8:01 and rather tame on album.
Referencing the original question... ALL OF THEM!

i definitely agree with this and not because I think the band can do anything wrong...to me it just is much better if you can feel it down in your bones and core...and if you are there live you definitely feel the preggo bass and all the other stuff...so the statement that all of the songs are better live is definitely true for me too.
I don't know, I think there are some things that translate better on album. Also, that's just a cop out...
In terms of how a song sounds regardless of lyrics, STRANGLUATION hands down has so much more depth when it's played live! Make it a regular instead of a Gem!
War Begun is probably the greatest difference (and improvement) between the studio version (which I still love) vs. the live one.
I think part of why I say "all of them" is because its nearly true. I go through the list and find the studio version of many of their songs less intense or fleshed out then when seen/heard on stage. The other piece to this is that I'd generally rather be at a show hearing their music than in my car, at home, or on the elliptical listening to mp3s. The rare opportunity to listen to vinyl Jacket is the exception.
Perhaps a companion thread to this one?

hands down, Highly Suspicious for me. I get the criticism of the track, but damn those guitars and Jim's extended falsetto (especially this past Friday) are badass live.

Agreed. This is always skipped when listening to EU but it's a monster live. I know it can be a tempo killer but Slow Slow Tune can be pretty intense live. I love Carl's guitar work on this.
Every song on TF is extremely better than the recording and for that matter AD also.
On ISM, Master Plan improves tremendously. The later albums, the songs are all great live, but so are the recordings. But any song live by them by default is better as we all know.

HOT BM's are difficult to digest.
To throw another title into the mix, Picture of You is great live, especially when they find the right groove at the end of it. The recordings on some of the archived early tapings are real gems.
Interesting how divisive this is. I never, ever listen to The Dark on TF (only Jacket song I skip altogether), but live I have enjoyed it. Many songs are great on record but even better live though.
The Dark is super amazing live. One of my favorites!

Carl was going bananas during The Dark at PC. Definitely belongs on this list.

I love it when Carl goes bananas, seriously.
