Jim performed with Tom Morello last night in LA at the Grammy's Musicares gala honoring this year's person of the year: Bruce Springsteen. Jim and Morello did The Ghost Of Tom Joad, and I heard they "brought the house down"'!
I posted these pics in another thread but figure they'll be seen by more folks in this section.
Looks like Jim was thrilled and having a blast!

NEIL YOUNG performs BORN IN THE USA at the GRAMMY Musiccare (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ScgF3nWGPM#)
Edit to say I believe Morello was also onstage for Bruce's WE Take Care Of Our Own, as he's now temporarily part of the E St Band until Steve returns from filming his TV show Lilyhammer. TM will be doing the upcoming Aussie leg of tour.
An excerpt from the LA Times review of the night:
Emmylou Harris drifted through "My Hometown," Springsteen's lyrical glimpse at the power of roots and birthright, gently playing an acoustic guitar while offering the song's bittersweet lines. John Legend turned Springsteen's early 1980s upbeat pop song, "Dancin' in the Dark" into a solo piano ballad; the Boss later said that "it made me sound like Gershwin." Zac Brown and Mavis Staples collaborated for a gospel-filled take on "My City of Ruins."My Morning Jacket's Jim James tore through "The Ghost of Tom Joad" with guitarist Tom Morello. (Find a copy of this performance online; it was the most powerful rendition of the night.)

thats cool but where is the whole video I'm dying for this!
I was there last night. Jim and Tom Morello was a huge highlight. The entire night was amazing.
The performance of "The Ghost of Tom Joad" with Morello was very true to the current E St. band arrangement. If you haven't seen that, watch this (all the way through, you won't be disappointed):
http://youtu.be/B-c6GphpAeY (http://youtu.be/B-c6GphpAeY)
Jim played and sang Bruce's part very well. It was outstanding.
At the end, when Bruce brought up all of the artists for Glory Days, he made a point of saying about Jim, "Get that man a guitar, he looks naked without a guitar!" Or something like that. It was cool.
A great, great, great night.

Thanks John. Not sure what happened there.
Actually, Bruce said, "Give Jim a guitar. He looks like a maaaan that should be holding a guitar!" You can see that (or more likely hear it) here:
http://youtu.be/5g0p5LCace4 (http://youtu.be/5g0p5LCace4)
What a tool Tim McGraw is. Says he knows the 2nd verse, and is either drunk off his ass, or has no f'n clue what the verse actually is, and looks like an ass. I'll bet Jim knew it, and woulda killed it!
Love the " Jim looks like a man that ought to be holding a guitar" bit, and then asks him if he's got any noise coming out of it yet before he starts.
When I see/hear Jim blow away legends when he's at a benefit or something reminds me of young eddie vedder when he use to go to birthdays (bob dylan) and other benefits and blow the crowd away. Both legends of our time .

I was just thinking last night about the "legends" of our time that have created a place for themselves in history... Vedder, Thom Yorke, Jack White are the big 3 who are all obviously there, and Jim and Jeff Tweedy will more than likely be joining them one day. Who else?

I agree with those, the only other name I can think of right now is Trey. I'm not at all a Phish or Trey fan but I do respect what they've done and think his name deserves to be mentioned with the others.

Love the reprise at the end of Part two with Bruce, Jim, and Morello front and center, and the nice little lean in moment Bruce, and Jim shared at the end of Glory Days.
Now if you could only find a full version of Ghost Of Tom Joad from that night, I'd be eternally grateful!

they compliment each other nicely... Jim was right to hand off the majority of the solo to Tom.. he is a monster. would love to see MMJ cover this with morello live.

Totally agree. Morello owns the solo's on this tune. He's been playing with the E St. Band for a bit now, and He's featured on this one and a couple of other's on Bruce's latest album.
I'd love to see MMJ cover this one. It would certainly be a great choice if they want to do a Bruce cover. Much better than friggin Hungry Heart. Hell, Bruce needs to put that one out to pasture too.
Agree completely about Hungry Heart. I love this but I thought Mprellos guitar work got a bit masturbatory at the end.
I'd like to politely disagree about "Hungry Heart" off The River (arguably one of the best, Springsteen albums, among fans of the boss). An article came out shortly before Portchester shows, where Jim went and saw Bruce, at KFC 🍗Yum Center, and said (I'm paraphrasing here) "was blown away by the energy" and "didn't know why he hadn't been seeing Bruce for years." I had a similar experience when I saw "The Boss" the first time, ironically enough in Boston (which is where I saw MMJ cover him for the first time), and I swore I'd see Bruce any chance I got, which is EXACTLY the same thing that happened the first time I saw MMJ!!! It's my "opinion" that, that is why we got "Hungry Heart" in Boston on NYE. I thought it was a perfect "working class" song for a "working class" town. And I don't think we'll get that one again anytime soon. Also MMJ is kinda known for some out of the ordinary covers. Those who know, know what I mean. Anyway that's just one guys opinion.
P.S.- "Thunder Road" or "Drive All Night" or, well you get the picture, would also be amazing covers for MMJ to do. So many possibilities from such a prolific song writer.
Cheers,
JC

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and as a long time Bruce fan, I'm thrilled they covered one of his songs. The thing is, for me, as fun a tune as HH is , there's so many other Bruce tunes I'd rather see them cover. HH is one of Bruce's first singles, and has to be the cheesiest song,or one of in his entire catalog. I get the whole crowd surf, energy thing that JJ was talking about, but after seeing him kill TGOTD with Morello, there's no question, IMO, MMJ would totally rip that one or any of a number of Bruce's more rocking tunes as opposed to the pop, crowd pleasing Hungry Heart. There's a couple off The River I'd take anytime over HH. Hell, I'd much rather them do Sherry Darling than HH. Maybe I'm just a jaded old vet who's seen HH too many times, but how I'd love to see Jacket cover TGOTJ instead. I would die a happy fan for sure.
