Seems to be. Maybe boards are all kinda going that way.
yeah, social media take over
The forum seemed like it was at it's peak when I joined in 2006. I used to laugh quite a bit at a lot of shit that was posted way back then, I don't get that from here too often anymore. Fully is pretty much the only funny person now. The positive is there was some real pricks that don't come here anymore either.
Maybe it's just getting slower because the band is on hiatus. I know Jim's touring, but that isn't quite exactly the same thing. Or maybe we are really assholes? I dont think it's recovered from switching back to the old forum, and even though many people have come back, they aren't on here very often. Maybe as Jim's tour starts, it will enliven or maybe I'll just start reading the Deadhead thread. I think it will take me until the next Jacket comes out to get through that entire thread.

I agree that some of the drop off is probably due to the lack of excitement coming out of the MMJ camp at this moment, outside of Jim's solo jaunt. I'm sort of the same way on the Pearl Jam boards, with their long tour and album hiatus I've fallen off posting there and only poke my nose there to see what's going on once in a while. I'm sure it will pick back up once Jim's shows start up and then the rumors of new albums and tours will kick back in soon after that.
in all seriousness, it never did fully recover from the old-new-board. before that, and even further back, I felt like there was a hell of a lot more friendly conversation and community around here. now it's almost robomatronic. it's become almost fan-boy-ish

Nice sig, there Windermere.
Fully is pretty much the only funny person now. Awesome.
This bums me out, but its true. I don't post here as much anymore... probably explains the decline.
:drum:
This was definitely my first foray into online chat and dialogue. In fact, I was completely paranoid about even joining, let alone posting initially. As I got more comfortable here, I think I got more ok with the idea of facebook. Speaking for myself, I think the FB thing has spoiled me a bit in terms of the instant gratification that I crave.
I don't think it needs to be "dead" and I certainly think that during peak show times, different threads will heat up. I just think it's not what it once was, and that's ok. I also think we are all so inundated with so many forms of electronic communication, that it's really kind of difficult to just keep up.
Well, that's my 2 cents. Now I have to go check my email/twitter/facebook/instagram and games.
would it help if i started the johnny quaid hair thread back up? would it?

Are there assholes here? I know about 4 years ago I quit the board (along with about 10 strong members who were here at the start) b/c it was rampant with assholes. These days there just seems to be little interest.
I'm talking about TJFA, not real assholes. Hell sticky is gone, Dylan is gone, and you hardly post... Not many assholes left.
But really, the conversation has just moved to TJFA.
I seem to come here for nerd fangirl/boy talk, to the assholes for silliness and twitter to promote things. It seems like each form of social media is getting it's own purpose.

OK, no idea what you're talking about. I had to google TJFA.... is the Teesside Junior Football Alliance really the problem?
oh no, always that damn Teesside Junior Football Alliance! they tried to steal some members back in 2001 but we all stuck together and survived. For those who are new or returning from a hiatus from the forum, a brief recap of recent history...
When MMJ hired a new company to design their webpage, they also tried a new forum design and format. The remnants of that effort are here (http://mymorningjacket.com/forum), still active for issues related to membership in MMJ's fan club, Roll Call.
The benefit of the new forum was that it brought Roll Call members from the seperate, Roll Call-only fan club site together with the regulars of this forum. But the format and design of the "new" was frustrating to many, some of whom stopped coming by here so often. Many have never returned.
A number of previously active forum members found Facebook met their needs and seem to have decided that's still the case. Once we got our "old" forum back, many of those who had left just never came back or post much less frequently.
I split my time between this place and a Facebook group often mentioned here. Both sites have their advantages and disadvantages, but for many its too much to keep up with both, so the activity here has suffered.
I appreciate everyone who continues to make this forum a great place for discussing music and whatever else is on your mind. I hope this "slow death" is not as dire as some seem to suggest.
I use Facebook to do what it was designed for: wishing people happy birthday, making snarky comments, and organizing secret conspiracies. Here is where I talk about MMJ stuff and drinking. The duplication of effort in both places is often annoying and tiresome, and then I miss something there and/or here.
I'll be honest about my feelings on this forum - it's not really fun for me because nobody responds to anything I have to say. Not my posts, my photos of the band, nothing. I was actually thinking of changing my forum name to "threadkiller." Sorry, but if you can't get a dialogue going with anyone, then what's the point of coming here?
Reach out to some of the non-regulars and maybe you'll get something going.

I had to post an awful lot before people really started responding to me. I don't think it's anything personal. I probably talk to you more on Facebook than I do on here. When I see your forum name I forget it's you bc I see your real name more often. I like the immediacy of fb. There are times when a thread gets hot on here that we have the same thing. I love it when we do. It seems like before the forum switch we had it more often. The truth is that while this board took a hit, it is much more alive than when it was all black with gold letters in a white box. Now, THAT was dead. I felt like I was talking to myself over there.

One of the only elements that keeps me coming back is the Off-Topic and Other Music forums. I don't find it interesting talking about MMJ on a daily basis. Throw down an interesting topic and I'm all in. It's great seeing some of the vets still toughing it out.
There's a FB page separate from the band page?

Also, just wanna say that it's pretty funny that the people who are posting in the board death thread are the ones who are keeping us alive, imo

This is about as "Social" as I get. I enjoy this place a lot and hope it doesn't die out.
I've been thinking about this thread a lot these days.
I think this post from earlier today is a symptom (sure sign) that bullshit facebook IS KILLING this board.
"Would you guys be interested in a private Facebook group specifically for those going to One Big Holiday. I know FB is somewhat polarizing, but it has its pluses. Someone created a private group for Panic's Playa and I loved it. It gave those of us a spot to basically be freaks about the trip and the excitement that goes with being blessed with the ability to go on a trip of this magnitude. It then keeps us from what I sometimes feel is rubbing it in to those who cannot attend. Just a thought."
...just a thought...fuck facebook...
I see the pluses of a private facebook group. You can discuss things privately that you may not want freely available on the internet. However, if it's solely being done to keep those of us not going from feeling like our faces are being rubbed in it, don't worry about it. We know how it works. I'm thrilled for everyone who gets to go to this thing. I've been members of private facebook groups for quite a few of these trips. It makes planning much easier, and you know everyone's real name before you get on the trip. I'm pretty sure there is at least one private facebook group for this trip already.
bump
I think this forum has been very inactive as of late. Even more so than normal. I figured with record store day happening there would be a little more action.
Maybe this forum just really needs an album and a subsequent tour...
Once the Jacket announce tour dates we'll see the color start to come back.. There's so much to ramble about when there's actually tour dates available.

Dead, my arse!
I used to be quite active on the forum for years but fell off a long time ago. I check it out (lurking?) every several months. The reason for my disengage was that for a fan forum, it felt "exclusive" to me in that it seemed that newer members were not fully embraced. I hated that about the PJ forum (fan club member since 1991) and haven't been on that site for ages. I'm back now, as I was a year ago, is to get the high that is anticipating the upcoming OBH. And because there are a some really nice peeps here.

I feel you, LL. That's a fair assessment. Ironically, while there are fewer people and a lot of great forum royalty have left or rarely post, those that remain and some of the newer folks seem mighty welcoming.

I suppose the term "royalty" might be taken the wrong way by some. I've always referred to folks who were here long before me, with deep knowledge and experience with the band and forum, that way. Its meant as a term of respect to them, not disrespect to those new to the board. Sort of a "founding fathers (and mothers)" reference.
I felt fairly well embraced when I joined in '09, but that welcoming vibe did start to fade. The forum changes, the negativity it garnered, and some downright viscious exchanges turned this beloved forum into a dark, mean, angry, and unwelcoming place for a time. I'm surprised at myself for sticking around...
This ain't a private club, and it isn't Roll Call. The forum is whatever members want it to be. I hope it lasts, grows, and continues to evolve.
That's exactly what I thought you would say! It needed to be explained though. When I came on board, there was a bit of time proving that I was going to stick around, but I too found it welcoming. It's changed a great deal ever since the changeover and then the change back. I expect when the band has an album and a tour, it will get more lively. Just look how lively it's become since the 2nd Obh has been announced. I doubt lots of those older forum members are coming back, but I can find them other places. I do miss the music discussions on here, but things change, and every now and then one that interests me will pop up.
Like many others this was the first board I joined. It started out for me to be a great way to gush over the band that lifted my passion for music to new heights. Creating an online persona that reflects who you are but also not giving away to much of yourself. I can't get caught up in the old board vs new board anymore, I equate it to the people and conversations are the same but just moved to a different room in the house with newer furniture. I credit this board for introducing me to some wonderful people from all over the world, many that I consider family. I still enjoy the buzz of meeting new people at shows for the first time that I've met on this board. The difficulty for me is managing my social networking time. I'm guilty of falling down the FB rabbit hole which has limited my time here. That and also OBH fomo. Someday I will make to one. Just not in my cards financially with our daughter starting college this year. I'm going try make a conscious effort to bump up my daily post average to 1.5 per day
I'll be interested in seeing how you manage that . 5 of a post. I'm tired of the old board vs new board discussion too. I only brought it up because it's what drove so many to Facebook. Sometimes on here we focus more on music discussions than we do there. I still like to come around, but I've noticed how much more of a lurker I've been. I keep waiting to get hyped up about a new album and tour. Obh is nice, but it isn't the same thing. It's basically a vacation for the fans that can afford it and an easy money maker where they don't have to pack up and travel for the band. I'm not slamming it. It just doesn't seem as accessible to all fans as a tour and an album.
Another factor for shifting member activity is that the forum becomes the catalyst for many REAL relationships, which then move beyond the boards to FB, email, texting, and (most importantly) in-person encounters. The forum led me to real relationships with dozens of people from all over the world- people I've met and hugged and stayed with, shared shows and parties and food and fun.
I joined in '09, but when I embarked on a small run of shows in April '10, I reached out to a forum member who lived in Birmingham, the first stop, and ended up in his living room an hour after landing. scosby2 and I are good friends ever since.
I met headhunter in person, after he generously offered me a ticket and a place to stay so I could attend the only T5 show I could manage. Again, now a good friend, Jeff and I have travelled together to numerous shows and spend some time at his home with his lovely wife, who makes me a bag lunch for the trip home.
Burlington, VT connected me to tbd810, 8bobbyb, ynwa, lil sis, ericm, joeyrogo, and others. T5#5 was the mother of all meetups!
During another run of shows in Montreal and Ottawa, I met northern neighbour, GO4IT, and their wives. GO4IT and his awesome wife shared their home for a pre-show party prior to MPP '12.
Making the effort to find and meet MMJ peeps in New England led me to share many shows with mahg33ta, along with a poster fetish. Meeting his wife and kids, his friends, and doing some non-MMJ gigs, has been great!
I have probably spent more quality time with folks I met here than many of my long-time pals, who's lives and interests have followed a different path.
I'd encourage folks here to connect beyond the forum as much as possible. Be safe about it, of course. This band seems to attract some pretty cool people!

Well put sir! I was pretty active from '05-'08 and have pretty much been a lurker ever since... With Maya Morning Jacket on the horizon though, my hope is to form some relationships here and connect with some forum people down on the Riviera... so, I guess I'm back!
I was never aware of old board vs new board and I'm still not; and I don't care. I don't find it interesting endlessly dissecting any band, no matter how much I like or love them, so I stick to Off Topic for the most part while keeping an eye on other forums.

Welcome back, easy way! Are you Thomas from Atlanta? We met in the parking lot of Chastain Park, 4/23/10. Parked next to each other, I was playing my omnichord. You gave me this...

Hey John! Is that an Alex Grey/Tool related T-Shirt you've got on there? Looks pretty cool!
No. I found the art online and customized it as part of three shirts I made and wore for my 3-show run in April '10.

That they are! Alex's CoSM is amazing... truly an enlightening experience. I always really enjoyed the 'cardiovascular system' and 'Sophia'

I'm not a big Alex Grey fan but did check out CoSM in NYC several years ago and was blown away. Those pieces are huge!
I love how active things are now that we have some stuff to look forward to!

I do think that design was an Alex Grey one. I found this gif of it earlier today.

Put your pants back on.
Crispy's turtle is nothing to be trifled with. Or so I've heard.
Speaking of turtles... There's a big ass tortoise in Louisville that goes for walks around downtown... Keep Louisville Weird!
I saw a turtle making love to a croc.
Is this board dying a slow death?
Yes, I suppose we all are.
Not nearly as bad as the PT board thankfully.
That one was started 10 days ago. It has all of 13 threads with a total of 55 posts combined and the last post was 3 days ago!
It honestly wouldn't bother me in the least if that board faded into oblivion.

I really like the sounds the turtle makes in this video
those sounds are amazing! kind of heartbreaking.
do you think he was motivated by loneliness or fetish?
re: slow death? eh.
eric, what is the PT board?

Good to see you back around here.
If it wasn't for this place I'd have never met you or so many other great people. That alone keeps this place special to me, and keeps me coming back.
I hear that Eric. It is special. I made a news years resolution to deactivate my FB acct. I found myself going down a rabbit hole with it. Fb does have some redeeming qualities that helped further relationships with many of you. But it started to become an issue with me being on there all the time. #thestruggleisreal [emoji3]

Looking forward to seeing you at RR, and having some more great times to add to the pile.
Was just thinking the other day, if not for this place I'd have never have met bluesky and been jetting off to Iceland with her in a couple weeks!
MMJ has introduced me to a lot of cool folks, but I'll always love the forum OGs the best.
Amen Sister lady, You gals are gonna have a blast in Iceland. I hope you don't get ravaged by Vikings :cheesy:

Well that makes....one of us, Tater!
Stoked to see such a nice crew forming for Red Rocks, too. Gonna be good times!
Aww... warms my heart to see this.
You guys know how I feel about the Forum (and how FB lured so many other cool cats away). Great to see Bluesky, ALady, tatebug, ericm, headhunter (happy anniversary, Jeff!), soulshine, Ms. Yvon, fully, and anyone else here where it all started.
Is this board dying a slow death? Not quite.
Is it a shell of its former self? Perhaps.
Does it offer a place to connect with eventual life-long friends? Seems that way!
Definitely looking forward to seeing you all at Red Rocks.
Tater... you flyin' to RR?
Good morning Yac. Yes I'm flying. We arrive Thursday and depart the following Tuesday. I'm really looking forward to it also, can't wait to see everyone, oh and the band also [emoji3]

I've been off of here for a while, mostly busy. But I can always say that this is where it started for me, and thru roll call - I've met the nicest people who share an interest that is near and dear to my heart/soul. This band!!
I'm hoping to go to Louisville and hope to see some of you there!
God's grace -
Great to see you all here too! I just shut down my face book as well. I would much rather gather this way online. I've always liked the way this site is organized. And I miss being here where we mostly talk about band stuff, unless we are talking about Vikings!!!

Ahhh, I also miss the old days of the forum. It was such a simpler time, with so much less information constantly hitting me in the face. I totally hear you, tater, on the facebook rabbit hole. I haven't given it up yet, but it's probably a very smart idea.
I appreciate meeting so many of you through this forum, and happy to call you all my Jacket Family, whether it's here, FB, Insta, or on THE ROAD!
